Although the chefs are talented at this restaurant, the service is disorganized and comically inept, and the attitude of the management arrogant beyond belief. Almost immediately after sitting down, I was hit on the head--literally beaned-- by the chalk menu board perched over my head, leaving me a little stunned. Without apology the head waiter replaced it and 5 minutes later it fell and hit me again. My friend and I ordered veal from the selection of just four main dishes. "No veal," and no explanation or apology. Irritated, I tried to chill out by ordering a second glass of the house red wine--only to be told by the waiter that I'd have to wait for advice from the sommelier; and the sommelier was busy at the moment. Eventually, this person (actually the head waiter)appeared with the glass of wine (good news) but (bad news) proceeded to replace the menu board next to me, this time with the injunction, "Be careful!!"
At this I lost my cool and angrily confronted the man. If dinner hadn't already been underway I would have walked out. With practiced condescension, the head waiter
leaned over me and whispered that he couldn't understand why I was angry but he regretted that, for whatever reason, I was unsatisfied. I wondered if I'd gotten involved in a slapstick comedy about a pretentious restaurant's unfortunate opening night.
The food here was good, a small miracle and a tribute to the chefs, considering the chaotic and unpleasant atmosphere of this restaurant. I was so upset by this dining experience that it took me an hour and repeated reassurances from my dinner companions to before I calmed down. If you go to Bon Saint Pourçain, wear a crash helmet and be prepared to overlook repeated incompetence and flagrant discourtesy by the management.
