"This French-Vietnamese spot has been doing its thing since 1996—a long time considering the way restaurants come and go. It's a white tablecloth kind of restaurant, and great if you need something a little quiet and somewhat formal in the Gold Coast. Candlelit tables with white tablecloths and wood shutters are met with palm trees and woven chairs. And you’re here for dishes like pho and barbecued pork, goi cuon, and curries like cari ga. A meal at Le Colonial won’t be inexpensive. But know that you’re paying for the great service and a nice space, it makes for a pleasant afternoon or evening. Food Rundown Cha Gio Never a bad idea to start with fried spring rolls. Your choice of shrimp, pork, or mushroom that all come with a chili lime sauce. Bun Thit Nuong Thinly sliced barbecue pork over angel-hair noodles w/ mesclun peanuts and lime garlic sauce. The pork is hit or miss with being a little plain, but when it’s good it’s good. Pho The usual stuff. Oxtail soup with rice noodles, beef tenderloin slices, and a variety of herbs. It’s just as good as when you’re eating it while wearing sweatpants on the couch. Tom Xao Sate Sautéed jumbo shrimp and asparagus with a date, chili, and garlic sauce. Sup Do Bien A boullabaisse of coconut saffron, lemongrass broth, lobster, mussels, shrimp, scallops, whitefish, and vermicelli noodles. If you’re into shellfish and coconut saffron broth you’ll be into this dish. Chao Tom Our go-to appetizer. Grilled shrimp wrapped around sugar cane with angel hair noodles, mint, cilantro, lettuce, and a peanut plum dipping sauce. Take the shrimp off the sugar cane and make lettuce wraps with it. Mein Xao We always like to have a side of these cellophane noodles with crab meat, mushrooms, and cilantro on the table for good measure." - Sam Faye

"Soleil Ho critiques Le Colonial for its celebration of colonialism and poor quality food. She describes the food as full of bone-dry meats, clumsily plated $36 entrees, and nigh-undrinkable $15 cocktails. Chef changed post covid. Ordered the banana leaf wrapped steamed sea bass with coconut sauce and glass noodles. Highly recommended! Service was excellent. Not busy if you go early. Good place to eat alone when traveling. Floors need updating.

Google
Ok, so hear me out, the place is beautiful and the food is delicious! If you want some great cuisine, go here! The service was wonderful, they are attentive and kind. The only reason they didn't get 5 stars is the desserts could use some work. The cheesecake is actually quiet good! However the Creme Brule had some issue, the custard was more like a wet quiche than a custard. The Passion Fruit Crumble has a good compote, but the crumble was dry and grainy. Would I go here again, yes! Would I suggest the establishment work on their dessert, yes!

Breath of fresh air, great food and nice ambiance. Many pesceterian options. We enjoyed everything that we tried.

Google
The space was intimate, warm, and exceptionally decorated. The server gave great recommendations. I enjoyed the passion fruit cocktails with the earthy cilantro and spicy tone-based tequila. The crispy vegetarian spring rolls were delicious, and the Beef stir-fried Criphy Pho was flavorful!! The Angus Beef dishes were super tender and easy to devour with the side accompaniment of the sauce. I chose the rambutan as a dessert which was fresh and chill. Would recommend it to friends and come back again.

We were a party of 12. No food was left behind! :D I’m a huge fan of Le Colonial in Chicago. We decided to try the one in San Francisco. We’re so glad we did! Everything we ordered was delicious. A couple of times we doubled up on certain dishes because they were just that good! It was a fairly busy holiday evening; but, we were fortunate to be seated in a more private space with plenty of distance from other diners. The restaurant staff and our main server were working hard to take care of us and all the other guests there. We were grateful for their hospitality.

Google
I had such a fantastic time here , From the drinks to the food everything was so good, it’s such a lovely colonial style restaurant. I ordered a Mai tai and my husband ordered tamarind margarita. Both were great, I loved the decor , there’s outdoor patio seating and indoor seating. Clean tables ,plates and linens . I was just bit irked when I found a huge housefly on my glass , but the server changed my glass immediately. We went for the restaurant week menu and we also ordered 2 extra appetizers from the menu . We were so amazed with the quality and quantity of the dishes . They ran out orange cranberry panacotta so we were offered to choose any dessert from the menu so we took the Duran cheesecake . They have parking lot and they do validate parking 😄

Google
It had been so long since my last visit, maybe 20 years ago. I forgot that the restaurant is still here and how fantastic it is ! Highly recommend! There was a table behind us speaking French - that is an endorsement right ! Highly recommend: vietnamese crepe, crab imperial roll. Shaken beef, pork skewer , clay pot salmon, sea bass in banana leaves !

Google
Wow, we were so impressed by this spot. The outdoor seating was enclosed and we stayed warm. We went for brunch and really enjoyed everything we got. There were several vegetarian options - a frittata and the French toast. There is paid parking next door or paid street parking in the area. Great service and great food!

Charmagne E.

Yelp
This place has always been a favorite of mine! Food is out of this world with flavor and high artisanship. The service is exceptional. And the ambiance is exquisite. This place has quite the beautiful story. It envelops you the minute you walk in the door. Go, you will never be sorry for it! Worth every damn penny!

Linglong Z.

Yelp
The variety of dishes they offer is impressive. Everything we tried was delicious. I highly recommend the yellow curry shrimp if you can handle a bit of spice--it's absolutely fantastic. The sea bass dish was a bit on the pricey side, but it was definitely worth it for the taste and quality. What I loved most about Le Colonial was the ambiance. The moment you step into the entrance hallway, you're greeted by lush tropical plants, which makes you feel like you've been transported to Asia. The interior decor is lovely and adds to the whole experience. It's a really charming place. Definitely worth checking out

Catherine M.

Yelp
I was thrilled that they served banh xeo with lobster and pork belly. It was perfectly crisp and the nuoc mam sauce was delicious. Plenty of butter lettuce and herbs were provided so you could roll up the banh xeo and dip it in the sauce. I love tamarind cocktails so was pleasantly surprised that they served tamarind margarita!

Taylor K.

Yelp
This restaurant took me by surprise. It's hidden. Kind of in an alley. But when you first walk in you go up this grand staircase into a dining area that feels like a greenhouse with lots of plants and lanterns. The food was amazing. We ordered the appetizers twice because we all wanted more. Everything had its own unique flavor and flare. There wasn't a thing we tried that I didn't like. The service was great too! Fave thing was the lamb! Second the chicken. Third Sea Bass! (Not a fish person)

Hillari A.

Yelp
Great little space in a city alleyway. We were caught off guard by this little gem. As you enter the doorway, you realize the space is so distinctive in its space. We were seated in the greenhouse area, full of bountiful trees & plants. Our waiter was attentive and thoughtful to the occasion. His suggestions were spot on and did not disappoint. Engaged in our casual and welcoming conversation as if part of the party (in the best way). Overall, a fabulous meal experience. Would def visit again!

Yelp
The food was sooo delicious. I've never had vietnamese fusion like this before. It was also super fun because the outside doesn't look like much but the inside is beautiful!!! The staff was also super friendly and attentive as well Highly recommend coming here and getting everything from appetizers to cocktails to desserts!

Jolie W.

Yelp
This place has a classy, high end ambiance with friendly and just the right amount of attentiveness of service. I got the: crispy tiger prawn and pork crepe- I feel like the prawns aren't really there but overall pretty tasty Central vietnamese steamed rice cake- i've never tried this vietnamese dish before, the rice cake itself has a gelatin texture, the peanuts and sauce on top are the star of the dish, and the provided fish sauce definitely helps with the blandness of the rice cake itself. Overall love this one Portobello spring roll- the rice noodle wrap is nice and thin, the mushroom was well made, overall nothing wrong Lemongrass chicken- the chicken breast is dry but still tasty, the thighs were a bit oily but the fish sauce and wild honey jus was a nice kick. Brussel sprouts- the sweet chili glaze was definitely very pleasant, it had a tangyness to it as well, the carrot chips were a nice slightly crunchy addition. Loved this Fried tiger prawn- the rice flakes were too thick, i wish it had more of an airy crunchyness to it. It's so thick it was scratching my mouth. But taste good Overall this place has good food but with little things that can be improved. Good ambiance but the price is on the higher side.

Meg G.

Yelp
we had such a great meal here!! admittedly we don't eat a lot of vietnamese food because vegetarian options can be pretty limited and underwhelming, so we were so pleasantly surprised by the wide range on the wide range of veggie options! the food was hearty, flavourful and delicious! I also loved the vibrant outdoor patio and the understated interior decor!

Yelp
This was our first experience at Le Colonial and our review is based on the 2023 SF Restaurant Week $65 dinner menu. Overall, we had a good experience and dishes were generous portions and nicely presented. We started with the fried tiger prawns (generous portion of three pawns even though the menu says five ) and the beef salad which was perfectly seasoned and balanced. For entrees we had the lemongrass chicken two ways and the plant based pork meatball curry. Both dishes were delicious but we preferred the sautéed chicken thighs to the roasted chicken breast. The highlight for me was the fire roasted eggplant which surprised me since I am not typically an eggplant fan- it was delicate and balanced well with shallots and pork. The brussels sprouts were also nicely done in a very large portion. Last but not least, dessert was a great ending to the meal. We had the matcha tiramisu -the matcha was subtle but tasted good on its own to have the matcha flavor come through. The panna cotta was soft and silky and had the perfect hint of lemon to balance the blackberries. In terms of service, all of the staff were kind and friendly but I wish service could have been a little quicker. The food came out promptly but it took a little while to order and to also get the check. Also, the restaurant week menu was not included with the regular menu and we had to request the restaurant week menu which they gladly brought. All in all a pleasant experience!

Yelp
I like trying restaurants u know that's why I'm an amateur pro on Yelp..I got fried shrimp that looked green and ceviche which is not Asian food or Vietnamese..in conclusion this is not really Asian food..it's American new..it's nice but overpriced ..need a date haha What I got didn't tickle my tastebuds. I didn't favor this restaurant when I sampled the appetizer-ish dishes I picked ...which were the price of entrees at other restaurants that taste better. I am sure there are some better tasting dishes but they are probably $50. Some people may really like this restaurant or find it challenging to enjoy.

Nell C.

Yelp
Fun venue to host a party! Food is delicious and ambiance is fantastic. Parking is tricky but it's within lots of walking distance.

Meghan H.

Yelp
I visited Le Colonial late on a Thursday evening. The restaurant was nice and quiet, and the service was friendly. Once food was ordered, it did not take long to reach the table. My favorite foods we tried included the Crispy Tiger Crepe and Papaya Shrimp and Jellyfish Appetizer. The dishes reminded me of elevated comfort food, and all were delicious. Overall, we enjoyed the food and quiet atmosphere of the restaurant for a relaxed dining experience and will be returning soon to try more of the menu!

Alisha H.

Yelp
The ambiance is to die for. I'd come back here for that alone. When you walk in you feel like you've been transported somewhere far. The food was good. Not great, but id definitely eat it again in the ambiance! We attended a wedding so the menu was fixed. The papaya salad was so delicious! That was a stand out for me. They kept forgetting forks, napkins and such. But it wasn't their fault as there was only 2 for the whole wedding party event. The bar was fast and efficient!

Christiane F.

Yelp
The decor of this place is really pretty which gives it a really nice ambiance. The service is fast and efficient. A bit too efficient, we felt a bit rushed at the end of our dinner, as if they were asking us to leave without saying it (cleaned up our plates, brought out the check... our plates still had food but they kept asking if we were done). The place was getting packed but we were there for less than 90min so that took away from the experience but I still enjoyed the meals. The crepe appetizer was my favorite.

Rekha M.

Yelp
Good location, cute decor, and that's where it ends The servers took a while and we might have irritated them by having our phones out and only ordering 1 entree to share. The food quality was below expectations (noodles were overcooked, beef was undercooked) and the bill was $50 for 1 pho + meat on side with tax and tip.

Patricia C.

Yelp
Overcharged while dining, when the "GM" was notified, his offer to make the wrong right, was never followed through with- great lip service! No worries, another lost customer because you failed to take care of your business. Good Luck Food was ok, as was the service

Carolyn T.

Yelp
Wow what a hidden treasure this restaurant is. Felt like I'd gone back in time with the indoor seating . The outdoor seating is fabulous too. They have a new chef and owner . Very diverse fusion Vietnamese menu . They are not open for lunch . Make reservations and check out the menu before you get there . Great for casual meal or special occasion . They have private room too. I can'really name all my dishes but they were all fabulous. The chef came out and introduced each dish as it was served . Enjoy the photos below . Don't miss out on dining here .

Yelp
We've been big fans for many years before COVID. With the recent loss of our son, we wanted to enjoy a night out in SF and looked forward to dining at Le Colonial. The food was mediocre. Not the same quality or freshness. The Brussel sprouts were drenched and soggy in its sauce that was too sweet. The most shocking part was they served my 5-year sober husband a regular beer by mistake. He had taken one sip and realized it was wrong. Under different circumstances the situation could have been much worse. This could have broken sobriety for many people or even a trip to the hospital under certain meds. They apologized to avoid a scene in the loud noisy crowd. The lack of care and detail was hurtful and embarrassing. Sadly we will not be going back.

Veronica B.

Yelp
Great food & service. We had a show to go to, and ended up rushing out during dessert after 1.5 hours, so give it some time.

Renee C.

Yelp
Sweet unassuming entrance into a lovely space! We had a large group so opted for family style and the food was delicious! Sweet potatoes were not what I expected, but totally loved them. Brussels sprouts, pork belly were perfect. The chicken and beef dishes were both melt in your mouth delicious. Overall a good experience that was severely impacted by how long it took for the food to arrive. Hours in between small plates, main courses and dessert. Not great after an already long day.I'd give a 3.5 if I could.

Tiffany H.

Yelp
Can we talk about old school cool for a second? Because that's what Le Colonial is. I went here midweek with my parents when they came out to visit me for a few days. It was on a "must go" list for my dad; he used to spend a ton of time in the area and he ate his way through their menu (and that of the Slanted Door back when it was in the mission somewhere) multiple times over. In a city full of restaurants (and bakeries) that have lines for no great reason, or, for the super lame reason of it being "instagrammable", there's places like Le Colonial. No it's not super brightly lit with modern gimmicky props/backgrounds, instead you are greeted with a bit of vintage styling, darker decor, and a vibe that calls for a great jazz band. There's a few different areas here - an atrium type space with a transparent ceiling, a darker more formal dining room, and an upstairs lounge with a bar. I forgot to mention, but Le Colonial is also its own small standalone building in a weird little alley near Union Square and just a couple blocks away from the TL. If you don't know what you're looking for, you would likely never find it. So, onto the dining experience! I hadn't seen my parents in a hot minute and we kind of follow French protocol of being at dinner forever. Our waiter for the evening kept checking in on us to try and get our food order placed, but we were total slackers in even opening the menu past the drinks options for probably close to an hour. I'm not a drinker and enjoyed having mocktail options so I could deviate from my usual tea or ginger ale. I ordered the bo luc lac because really is a favorite dish of mine and Le Colonial did not disappoint. The meat was beautifully prepared and the flavor hit all the right notes. We did wrap up with dessert and Vietnamese coffee which was a great way to end the night. Why wasn't this a perfect 5 for me? Well, when we arrived and by the time we left, the restaurant wasn't even near full capacity. No one was waiting for our table, but our waiter was constantly checking in to get food orders going; it felt like we were being rushed. I know someone else in the reviews complained about their server taking a while and I wish we could have just swapped staff! I recently checked the website out and their reservation page bluntly stated time allotments depending on your party size. I think that's kind of a crock if it's a slow ass midweek evening, especially if you end up ordering half the menu with your folks. I totally understand for weekends or holidays though.

Grant S.

Yelp
Visited Le Colonial in San Francisco and had a mixed experience. The fried egg rolls were a standout, and both the sea bass and beef were delectable. The meal ended on a high with a delightful berries and cream and a well-executed crème brûlée. Unfortunately, the potstickers fell short, needing a better sear, and some dishes lacked the seasoning punch I was hoping for. The margaritas were a hit, but I'd advise steering clear of the durian cheesecake - not my cup of tea. All in all, a pleasant dining experience but with room for improvement.

Zolboo N.

Yelp
Went here for a celebration and had a prix fixe menu starting with vegetarian spring rolls with mushroom, two types of other fried egg roll type dishes that were all delicious. The mushroom spring rolls were the best. I also had the cucumber gimlet mocktail and it was really good - not too sweet / sugar filled. My colleagues enjoyed their mango margaritas. For the main courses - we had the chicken thighs, salmon noodles in banana leaves and the vegetarian curry, which were all good but my favorites were the latter two. The Brussels sprouts were also a favorite for many. For dessert, we had the mango cheesecake, matcha tiramisu and a citrus some other cream based dessert. I'm lactose intolerant but I had some of the matcha tiramisu and it was really good. All throughout, the service was amazing. Very friendly staff and quick service. I was surprised to hear more modern electronic music playing in the background. Getting to the restaurant, there's a narrow alleyway / street so it's a bit sketchy but it seems like there's someone working there to ensure nothing happens.

Tiffany K.

Yelp
This used to be the old Trader Vics. Firstly I love the building! Very classic with covered outdoor seating, indoor seating and an upstairs area with outdoor patio. The decor is reminiscent of French occupied Indochina. You know what would step it up even more? Replacing the fake plants with real ones upstairs. I was here briefly for that awkward time between lunch and dinner. We ended up having cocktails and spring rolls and killing time before the Black Cat Cafe opened. The cuisine is Vietnamese with a twist. I noticed that some of the accompanying greens with the spring rolls included perilla, somewhat of an acquired taste. Spring rolls were tasty as was the lychee martini I ordered!

Dina G.

Yelp
I had a spectacular birthday dinner here. Our waiter, José, was super friendly, very attentive and helpful. The food was spectacular. We particularly liked the portobello mushroom spring rolls, the pork over noodles, the beef salad, and the eggplant. The flavors and textures of the eggplant were sublime. We also recommend the morning glory side dish. We had a whole host of appetizers, sides, and entrees plus wine and cocktails, and I'd say the bill was pretty reasonable for the amount of food we received. It was delightful to eat in the patio space, which feels enclosed but does have a bit of a breeze coming through for those of us who are still COVID-conscious and prefer outdoor dining for that reason. Our one recommendation would be to get a more affordable glass of sparkling wine, cava or Prosecco on the menu please!

Toan N.

Yelp
It's giving Vietnam during the French era so dress cute because the architecture and the decorations are worth being on your monthly dump which no one cares. Service gave what it's supposed to give. Food and drink were bussin. I ate and left no crumbs figuratively and literally (not me stuffing my face with food) Also, I'm from Vietnam and me seeing my small a$$ hometown name on the menu was a plus.

Aishwarya S.

Yelp
Went for SF restaurant week, food was pretty bland and definitely not worth the money. I wouldn't come back here.

Vidya K.

Yelp
One must visit just to see this quaint white building standing tall in Lower Nob Hill right next to the bustling Tenderloin area. There is valet parking right next door. We didn't know about it and parked in the garage at O'Farrell. The interior takes you to the past. Sweeping stair cases, patterned floors, and an old world charm. The staff is extremely attentive and helpful. The first course was the crispy spring rolls and it was served with lettuce and noodles. The dipping sauce was just great. You can order most of the items in the menu as a vegan option and We ordered the pumpkin and meat ball curry. It's served with a side of rice. Enough for two people very easily. The curry was an explosion of flavors that build up slowly. For two, we shouldn't have ordered more because the portions are big. We also also a side which is the size of a main course. The Fire Grilled Eggplant was our least favorite though it tasted good but not as great in comparison to what we already had. While they have lots of fake meat options I wish there was a couple of options with fresh produce or tofu. They used to have tofu on the menu but not anymore. The menu rotates I think. I came back from dinner and read about the restaurant /it's name and I understand why the name is off putting and there are lot of negative articles about it but apparently the current executive chef can't do anything about the name. What he has done is recreated a past era and curated an excellent food menu which is an ode to Vietnamese food leaving one wanting for more( i have a craving to try more of the cuisine) I would go again and try other items on the menu. Great place for a relaxing evening especially date night. Recommend!

Grace K.

Yelp
One of my favorite restaurants in SF! I've been twice and both times were amazing. Adorable front outdoor section and very cozy interior as well. Outdoors have heat lamps. Get the clay pot!!! Service was amazing, thank you chef Geoff!

N A.

Yelp
I've reconsidered my experience. The ambiance is still good along with the drinks, but the food is mediocre. I originally gave it 5 stars because of the cocktails and nice service, but it's more like 3.5 stars.

Michael C.

Yelp
Excellent food, fantastic ambience, highly recommend the experience. One of the best example of French / Vietnamese food in San Francisco

Liria S.

Yelp
Great customer service in a beautiful place which gave me high expectations for the food but it was just ok, dessert took way too long to come out.

Keith L.

Yelp
This place is a hidden gem. Went here for a party of 8 birthday party. The service was amazing. Everyone was friendly and our lead server was a professional worthy of a Michelin starred restaurant (and yes, I have been to a number of them). The team of servers was attentive but unobtrusive. I brought in an outside cake for the birthday surprise. Our server coordinated everything, and made sure that we had out camera phones ready for the special moment. The food was excellent as well. I am vegan but my friends are not. We had mostly vegan apps and all were amazingly flavorful. The only one I didn't like as much was the one with the faux shrimp, though the salad itself was good. Everyone loved their mains. Others had the shaken beef, the sea bass and a few other entrees. I had the shaken beef made with faux meat. My carnivore friend had the real shaken beef. He said that the texture of the meat was different (to be expected) but that the flavors otherwise were identical. This is some of the best vegan food I've had, and this place isn't even a vegan restaurant. It definitely is a place where vegans and non-vegans both can have excellent meals. The tab was a bit high, so I'd consider this more of a special occasion place. Still, I am already making plans on going back. If you haven't been here and like modern Vietnamese, give it a try!

Jamie W.

Yelp
I've never been to a proper Vietnamese restaurant before and only ever tried a couple of things from the cuisine before. I was excited to try Le Colonial! First off, the restaurant building is gorgeous. I'm a history/architecture nerd and Le Colonial did not disappoint. Prior to LC, it was a Trader Vic's (the 2nd) for about 40 years, and Queen Elizabeth had a cocktail here. I made a reservation and they gave us a fabulous corner table. I'm a people watcher and I'm also a tad claustrophobic so this was truly my dream table. Apparently there was a huge conference in town because it was packed for a Tuesday. Our waiter was the sweetest. Service was amazing. I miss fine dining/proper service. We ordered a few different dishes. My favorite was the spring rolls that you roll in lettuce with herbs. I could have ate the whole plate. The flavor of the tempura shrimp was good - but the texture was a little off-putting. Plus, they're green. One of the more interesting dishes was the Pho. I was envisioning a big steamy bowl of noodles but that is not what I received. Very tender beef nestled amongst veggies and crispy noodles. Very good. I wish that LC had been doing to tasting menu I saw advertised online. If I come back here again it will be because I really want to experience that. The only downside to the evening was the length of time it took for our food. Our server apologized profusely (though we weren't complaining). It's not his fault. They were super busy. Kind of a nice thing to see in this quasi-post Covid lockdown world.

Victor T.

Yelp
The food was absolutely delicious. Service was meticulous and the ambiance transported you to a different place and time.

Lori S.

Yelp
I have been to Le Colonial many times over the years and really thought the food was some of the best I've ever had. I wanted to share the amazing experience with my daughter, so I took her here for the first (and last) time. We had reservations at 6:45 and didn't get cocktails for at least 30 min. The waiter apologized for not having come by for....ever. The restaurant was almost completely empty. I asked them if they could remove the vegan shrimp from the spring rolls so that I could order them, but they said they couldn't. Suggested I try the mushroom spring rolls instead. I tried them and couldn't get them down, so they took them off the bill, which I appreciated. We got our food at around 7:45, an hour after sitting down. My girl and I literally just sat there twiddling our thumbs for what seemed like forever. She is great company, but you know what I mean. The waiter wasn't attentive and the restaurant was not busy by any stretch. The filet tasted good, but nothing special. Not like it was in the past. I had high expectations due to awesome experiences previously, but definitely things have changed at this restaurant. My drink sat empty for another 20 minutes. I ordered a second in order to salvage a part of the night, and that stood empty till I put my credit card on the table so that we could just leave. They offered free dessert. We declined. My daughter and I are all about the experience and we didn't get what we came for. We won't return.

Mary B.

Yelp
We had an amazing time celebrating a surprise birthday party here! The food was on point! Geoffrey was brilliant in choosing what would be perfect for my party of 60 people! The food was tasty, the options kept moving and everyone loved it! As for his wife Nhu was so lovely to work with through out the night. From coordination with a DJ, photo booth and food/beverage choices this place was great! Seemless teamwork and bartenders were amazing. The rooms upstairs were dedicated to just our party and it was LIT! The ambiance was playful, clean and inviting! We will be back!

Matthew L.

Yelp
My wife and I were at Le colonial on Thursday Dec 14, must of been understaffed. 30 min after being seated, the couple to our right walked away. after 60 min with no food we had to leave too- because my wife was hungry.

Emily F.

Yelp
I came here most recently for a private group dinner but have been before on my own. The private space was nice and spacious and didn't feel overly crowded. Service and all employees from the beginning were polite and friendly. They were on top of plates, refilling drinks, and having our food out very timely. All food was delicious and cooked well. Texture and flavor of all dishes were perfect. I was surprised that even the plant based meatless options tasted so great. Favorites were the imperial rolls, salmon, lemongrass chicken, and brussels sprouts. The panna cotta and cheesecake were my favorites for dessert. The panna cotta was so light and a great way to end the meal. I left wanting to come back again soon to try more.

Claire C.

Yelp
~ loved ~ this restaurant!! It's located kind of in an alleyway near union square and has a sign pointing to it. The waiter was so nice and kind and kept asking if we wanted more drinks / food / dessert (i guess he was just doing his job) but made the dinner experience a lot better. We all started off with a drink each and went on to order WAY TO MUCH appetizers: crunchy rolls, pork ribs, crab & asparagus soup, pawns... then each got a plate of entre too. I got the lemongrass chicken which was cooked to perfection, so tender and flavorful, but I just had too much to drink / eat beforehand that I barely touched it. I also HIGHLY recommend their Brussels sprouts! Just the right amount of sweetness.

Yelp
I like seabass wrapped in banana leaf and coconut rice here. The menu has been updated with many vegetarian dishes. Price is reasonable. Service is great. Warm, cozy, nice setting..

Yelp
Gayle and I last dined at Le Colonial in October 2014, as part of a night on the town, which included the live theater production of Motown at the Orpheum. Fast forward 6 and a half years, we're in the City again to see the Van Gogh Immersion exhibit at the old Fillmore West. Gayle wanted to make dinner reservations that were close to the Hotel Adagio and as it turns out, Le Colonial was only a block and a half away. Gayle, Jim, Marti, and I sat outdoors, with the restaurant's COVID restrictions in force. The place looked kind of lonely as at the end there were 4 tables outside and 2 inside with paid customers. But the elegance and service of this place was a good as I remembered the last time. It was also a nice warm evening, which just added to what turned out to be a very nice evening. In keeping with less business and staff due to COVID, the menu was prix fixe, starting at $45, which included appetizer, main course, and dessert. Marti and Gayle chose alike: Green Papaya Salad, the Shaken Beef entre for $15 more, and Tiramisu for dessert. Jim and I also were in sync: Crispy Crab Rolls, White Prawns Garlic Noodles (at base price), and Flourless Chocolate Cake. Le Colonial also has an extensive wine list (by the glass and bottle), which made things easy to choose, although I couldn't talk anyone into a bottle of Gewürztraminer. Gayle also decided on a Mai Tai, and was talked into the special version in a jumbo oyster shell "mug" which took 2 to finish. See picture. The food, atmosphere, and service were all fabulous and just having the opportunity to dine out for once, was a special treat. We walked home full, happy, and happy to be back in the City.

Yelp
Dinner @lecolonialsf ITS a been ages and when I say ages I mean like 15 years at least! ... and I'm wondering why?!! Le Colonial had stood the test of time for a reason- excellent food on a beautiful atmosphere with attentive service. We started with the special- crab stuffed Vietnamese crepe. It reminded me a lot of Korean seafood pancakes, except here you take a bit of the crepe, a bit of herbs, some sweet tangy sauce, and wrap it all in a lettuce leaf. Amazing! My dining partner enjoyed the shaking beef- perfectly cooked filet with a citrusy pepper sauce. I had the sea bass cooked in a banana leaf with glass noodles and a coconut sauce. We were a bit ambitious and ordered two sides which could have been meals on their own! The crab garlic glass noodles and the braised eggplant I would come back and order those as my meal. The eggplant was a vegan's dream- so "meaty" and filling. The garlic noodles were packed with flavors. Then drinks were also excellent a lychee martini for me and the parklet for my partner. Service was fast (we had a show to attend) and yet did not feel rushed. Excellent!

Yelp
I used to really like this place but it has gone downhill quite badly. Shrimp appetizer was overcooked and rubbery. It took forever to get the main courses. It is housed in a quite unique looking building, but that's about the only positive.

Yelp
Food was pretty solid but not noteworthy Prices were very high for what it was, though an understanding premium for fine dining Service was the worst I've experienced in a while. No food came out for an hour, we didn't have our main course for an hour and a half, and the shaken beef came out cold

Yelp
Good Vietnamese food but place was a bit tight. Good place for a birthday party since they have a bar/disco upstairs to burn all the calorie you ate at the restaurant

Yelp
Vietnamese food you can never go wrong...went here for a presentation and was able to try different dishes. Just one of the servers appeared stressed

Yelp
Proceed at your own risk. The undercooked lemongrass chicken made me gag. The lychee martini hit the spot though.

Yelp
Classy; tasty; and fun are the top three words that perfectly embody my first experience at Le Colonial. Coming to Le Colonial, you'll need to travel a bit towards a back alley (look for the glowing neon sign). I was expecting one of the taller buildings on the street, but in actuality, the restaurant was further tucked away inside. Once coming in, there is a gorgeous greenhouse-like outdoor area as well as a classy interior. My coworker and I sat outside. We were greeted by our server, who was amazing. He not only was quick to point out great dishes but also was super fun and charming. For instance, I was super curious about their house old fashioned, and he gave me fair warning that it would be unique (due to the buttery syrup they used). Sure enough, he was right but I absolutely loved it. And then he recommended me the Mai Monte Tai - a huge mai tai that was served in an oyster mug. Delicious, not overly sweet, and refreshing. Loved it. Food-wise, (their menu is seasonal so apologies if this changes!), we went for the crab flat noodles, the pork belly, and the bo luc lac. They were all delicious, but would definitely rank the crab flat noodles as our favorite (great size portion and super delicious noodles / crab). The pork belly was terrific too - loved the presentation of the rice noodles that came underneath and the sauce. And the bo luc lac was just solid (loved the slight little changes to making it unique). Thanks so much to our server (didn't catch the name unfortunately but absolutely made our visit that much more fantastic).
