Gayle and I last dined at Le Colonial in October 2014, as part of a night on the town, which included the live theater production of Motown at the Orpheum. Fast forward 6 and a half years, we're in the City again to see the Van Gogh Immersion exhibit at the old Fillmore West. Gayle wanted to make dinner reservations that were close to the Hotel Adagio and as it turns out, Le Colonial was only a block and a half away.
Gayle, Jim, Marti, and I sat outdoors, with the restaurant's COVID restrictions in force. The place looked kind of lonely as at the end there were 4 tables outside and 2 inside with paid customers. But the elegance and service of this place was a good as I remembered the last time. It was also a nice warm evening, which just added to what turned out to be a very nice evening.
In keeping with less business and staff due to COVID, the menu was prix fixe, starting at $45, which included appetizer, main course, and dessert. Marti and Gayle chose alike: Green Papaya Salad, the Shaken Beef entre for $15 more, and Tiramisu for dessert. Jim and I also were in sync: Crispy Crab Rolls, White Prawns Garlic Noodles (at base price), and Flourless Chocolate Cake. Le Colonial also has an extensive wine list (by the glass and bottle), which made things easy to choose, although I couldn't talk anyone into a bottle of Gewürztraminer. Gayle also decided on a Mai Tai, and was talked into the special version in a jumbo oyster shell "mug" which took 2 to finish. See picture.
The food, atmosphere, and service were all fabulous and just having the opportunity to dine out for once, was a special treat. We walked home full, happy, and happy to be back in the City.
