A Guide to Belleville, the Paris Neighborhood That Defies Trends

Le Grand Bain

"In the bustling heart of Belleville, we love this hip bistro and its authentic industrial workshop vibe, complete with a central island counter, glazed partitions, untreated materials (brick and concrete) and numbered tables. Tuck into tasty small dishes – chalked up on the blackboard. The funky playlist reflects the tastes of the hipster night owls and discerning foodies who flock here." - Michelin Inspector

From the chef who perfected ‘Au Passage’, a hotspot for small plates in Belleville — although the leg of lamb is perfect for large groups. They also have great (and affordable) natural wine, as well as a bakery next door, Le Petit Grain.

A perfect dining experience. A beautiful chef. An experienced front of house. This style of food is laid back yet adventurous and exploding with flavor. The chef, Toms if I’m not mistaken is calm and collected as he leads his team to victory night after night. I’ve been here at least 5 times and is my go to spot. Very good value. Bravo

It’s the second time I’ve reviewed Le Grand Bain and I cannot stress enough how amazing this spot is. Our menu was marked with the options we could eat (as my partner is pregnant) and we were waited on so friendly and promptly we felt like we were the only ones in there (it was fully booked though). I have to stress the importance of a reservation because not only is it popular, you just don’t want to leave Paris without a visit here.

One of the best places for gourmants. Everything we had was exceptional and left with a taste of happiness. Thank you!

The food was a little intimidating for my wife and I, just looking at the menu but boy are we glad we didn’t let that stop us! Amazing flavors! Great combinations! Can’t stop thinking about the duck with grapefruit and baba ganoush! A combination I’d never imagine yet with duck cooked to perfection and those flavors, WOW! One of the better bites of food I’ve had! And the service was SO helpful and guided us beautifully with the food and the wine!!!

Google
Would have given 5 stars just for the food, because it's absolutely delicious. The service was friendly initially... However, we ordered 8 little dishes of which the first 6 arrived within the first hour. For the latter 2 we had to wait almost another (!) hour. When we mentioned we were waiting for the last dish for a while we got the reply 'in France the chef is the boss.' Very pretentious waiter, and the place is definitely understaffed.

This was a great meal. Every plate better than the last. Unique flavors and spins on traditional dishes. I sat at the bar and the bartender/waiter was so helpful. He translated every line of the menu and made helpful suggestions. The organic wines were really unusual and very good. The space is small and cozy. You can see everything cooked in the tiny kitchen. Great place.

Google
Just excellent. Every single thing we ate and drank was delicious. Super lovely, helpful waiters. We had 5 main dishes between two people, plus dessert, which was perfect for us. Extremely reasonably priced, given how epic the food is. Booking is a must. Our best meal in Paris so far.

Google
The food was excellent, with unique and intriguing flavor combinations. However, we felt a bit short-changed as our octopus dish had noticeably less octopus compared to the one served at the next table. Overall a great experience.

Yelp
Great place with a small menu, make sure to order 3+ plates, we loved the savory cheese puffs and the rabbit pasta - octopus arancini was super interesting as well, I didn't get much octopus flavor but since the rice used was very flavorful itself that could be why! I definitely recommend venturing out for this place, you will be able to try a lot of varied dishes and for a small plates place I didn't even find it to be that pricey.

Yelp
Amazing and romantic ambiance. The staff was very friendly, knowledgeable and welcoming. We tried a bit of everything off their small menu and enjoyed it all. They have an extensive wine list and the waiter helped us pair a lovely orange wine with our meal! We'll definitely be visiting again on our next trip to Paris!

Yelp
Food was weak. Service okay. Wine was plain bad and very overpriced. This is not worth a visit. Pretty awful overall.

Yelp
We we're extremely in the restaurant, the food and the whole exp . we took a taxi from Paris--$40 euros. the menu was limited and nothing was good. the lamb was so tough I couldn't cut it. The parpadelle pasta was so salty we couldn't eat it. when we were ready to leave we asked them to call a taxi and were told "they don't have a number ". there is a taxi stand on the street. what street??? in this area they have no excuse not to have a number to call a taxi. I am surprised this is a Michelin rated restaurant--don't they follow up. Also the chef needs to review his food and taste it. A totally awful experience

Yelp
Amazing. If you get to eat nothing else, get the cheese puffs. Everything else was on point as well. The team was so attentive. So accommodating. So friendly. The lamb was to die for.

Yelp
Super delicious food, reasonable prices, cosy-chic atmosphere, great service with wait staff happy to help English speaking customers. Can't ask for more.

Yelp
I made a mistake on my reservation and they refused to help me out. Always when you call the person who answers us rough and arrogant. It's not worth the fight just to eat some decent polenta.

Yelp
This place made me feel betrayed by God and all of the forces which led me to try their food. We got around ten dishes and I had one bite of each, all barely to completely inedible. They played The Clash all dinner and the table behind us asked horrible questions like, "would you rather be homeless or a prostitute." Would have rather have been anywhere else. I have lost my trust in other human beings.

Yelp
If Le Grand Band was a woman (and I weren't married) I'd date her. Litteraly blew me away on every single aspect possible. The restaurant is small and beautiful, has perfect ambiance and atmosphere. We were a vegan and a pasceterian and they accomodated to us perfectly. Next to us a family of omnivores which enjoyed their beef as well. The wine list is A M A Z I N G and the team is proffesional and kind. Simply loved everything about it.

Yelp
Great Restaurant, Great Atmosphere, Great Food... My wife and I were in Paris and hit this spot due to its write-up's and great reviews... we were not disappointed. The food was really good (for anyone wondering they had a good selection of dishes, so I'd say they're vegetarian friendly) and fairly priced. The service was also top notch, 10/10... we speak very little French (almost none), and the waitress read the menu to us in English (she seemed happy to do it, and she said they do it all the time)... that's not something I would have asked for, or expected at all... All and all a great spot, thank you Le Grand Bain for a great dinner in Paris!

Yelp
Great atmosphere, buzzy, relaxed and hip. Every dish I had was creative and excellent - fresh and really well executed. Make sure to finish with the brillat savarin cheese, which is incredible.

Yelp
This restaurant serves small plates that easily stack up to form a multi course meal. Each plate was ingeniously crafted, complex and delicious, with traditional and international influences. The menu was divided by vegetables, fish and meat so most diets could be accommodated. The staff was charming. The plates were served right on time, not too fast or too slow. The sommolier recommended one of the cheaper wines and it was perfect. The crowd was a mix of locals and tourists that blended well. Overall the young staff has achieved something magical - both excellent and without pretension. Perfect exactly as it is.

Yelp
Really enjoyed our meal. The waiter was very helpful with translating the menu and wine recommendations. Probably the best lamb I've ever had in my life. All the other small plates had unique flavors and were fun to try.
