Le Grand Large

"Just a stone's throw from Rémigeasse beach, amidst dunes and unspoilt countryside, Le Grand Large Hotel overlooks the ocean below. The restaurant faces both the indoor swimming pool and the sea, which is perfect for sunset portraits in the evenings. The menu by David Boyer (Meilleur Ouvrier de France) exalts the region’s first-rate produce. The crab with roasted rice and glazed lovage, or the two-course Racan pigeon with a raspberry reduction, bear witness to the chef’s meticulous handiwork." - Michelin Inspector

We had an incredible stay and came away so happy. The service was absolutely amazing and the staff were so friendly and attentive. We had our 2 dogs with us and they were provided with their own handmade treats when we arrived and the staff remembered each of their names, which was a really nice touch. Beautiful setting with great facilities and right on the beach. We’ll definitely be going back.

The hotel, a recently renovated 60-year-old building, is currently striving for five-star status. However, the inherent limitations of the old structure, including small room sizes and an awkward layout, left us feeling cramped and uneasy during our stay. The room quality was more akin to a standard business hotel rather than a luxury establishment. Even the spa facilities, which are typically a hallmark of a five-star hotel, were disappointing. The jacuzzi, which had been reported broken a year ago in a Google review, was still not functioning, and the spa room lacked essential amenities such as water, snacks, and shower soap. It was also disappointing that the breakfast was at the standard of a business hotel. Furthermore, severe security lapses led to our car being damaged in the parking lot, with no assistance available. These issues clearly indicate that the hotel has significant improvements to make before it can genuinely be considered a five-star establishment. Despite these shortcomings, our three-night stay had some positive aspects. The hotel's prime location, the sincere hospitality of the staff, and an excellent dinner (despite the restaurant being closed for two out of three nights) were commendable. However, these advantages are overshadowed by the hotel's current deficiencies.

This is a five-star hotel where the food and facilities match the rating. We tried two of the set menus and both did not disappoint. The sommelier guided our choice of wines and both were superb. From the receptionist to each of the waiters nothing was too much trouble. A faultless stay.

We arrived at the hotel and during the check-in process I asked if I could book a table in the restaurant that evening? I was then informed that the restaurant was closed in January 2019. I then showed the woman the various web pages showing food that was served in the restaurant and the chef's comments on the food. I was then informed that it was not the hotel's problem that various websites were showing the hotel had a restaurant including Booking.Com. I explained that due to my wife's disability that we booked the hotel based on the fact it could handle disabled guests and that there was a restaurant which meant we did not have to try and find local restaurants that were disabled friendly. ||She then said they could book a table for us at a restaurant they could recommend, I pointed out that it would have to cater for disabled people which she said it did. The restaurant turned out to be 25 minutes drive away and was not disabled friendly.||On our return to the hotel I said we wished to cancel our stay the following day. She said I should contact Booking.com which I did and explained the situation. They contacted the hotel and it was left for me to meet with the owner at 08:30 the following day. We asked if the bar was open? she said yes and asked what we wanted? My wife asked for a gin and tonic, only to be told there was no gin, she then had to settle for a vodka and tonic. I asked for a cider but was told there was none and had to settle for a local red beer.||We had booked a room with sea view and balcony, we got the sea view but the balcony was to small to use. The only balcony that you could sit on was overlooking a roof.||The toilet was extremely small, bath in middle of room, shower OK.||I turned up at 08:30 the following day and spoke to a new receptionist who was far more professional and understanding. She said the owner was not coming in until 09:00. We went for breakfast which was good. After breakfast she said she had spoken to the owner who agreed we could book out without any cancellation fee.||Something should be done to ensure hotels only show facilities that are available, how can people booking rely on information being displayed?

This unique hotel has so much to offer. The beach and miles of walking combined with a great pool. Couldn't find the towels- found out you are supposed to bring them from your room.|We had an excellent meal here with towers of seafood all fresh and so well presented.|This restaurant has an extensive wine list. |A great combination with excellent biking right out front with miles of trails. Terrific views of the ocean and big fat moon.

With the rooms prices and the 4 stars I expected something else: nothing in this hotel equals a 4 stars hotel except maybe the pool and outdoor garden area. ||Indeed, the view on the ocean is breathtaking... IF you have the right room! Otherwise it’s really not worth it. ||The common areas aren’t memorable. ||In the rooms you can hear the road, the elevator, other guests inside and outside. The bathroom doesn’t have walls (and I was there with my family so that was an issue) and there’s no where to hang wet towels. The robe (despite the fact that it was wrapped) had lipstick marks inside the sleeves. You can only log in to the WiFi with 2 devices per room which I find poor. The furnitures aren’t meeting my expectation either for this price. ||The restaurant was closed this year and this was a big disappointment. Nevertheless the breakfast is luckily available and again almost not meeting the 4 stars expectations. Except for the pastries and bakery products, the products aren’t of high quality and appear to belong more to a school cafeteria (which goes for the trays). ||The gym is quite small and in the middle of the corridor so everybody can look at you train. There’s no yoga mat for stretching or floor workout. ||The pool area is gorgeous, and that’s the prettiest place of the hotel. The view is beautiful, the water is great and the atmosphere is lovely and relaxing. I spent a lot of time there. ||Besides all of those remarks, the staff was polite and welcoming and helpful, the hotel was very clean and the location is super nice. The beach (which isn’t private) is awesome and very close.

My excitement for this hotel was dashed shortly after I arrived when they told me the reservation—that was made more than six months ago—had been messed up. Their excuse was that the person I talked to then no longer worked there. I had reserved their best ‘panoramic’ room. But, they did have an acceptable room, and then moved us to the other room on the second day. However, my problem with this hotel is that is a very expensive hotel which is run like an average Holiday Inn. We carried our own bags, the extra-cost breakfast was scrambled eggs & pastry, and room service was essentially non existent. The staff was, let’s say, indifferent to having our business. The only reason to stay here is the view of the Atlantic. See photo.
