The 23 Best Restaurants In Monterey

"Cannery Row can be a mess of tourists, souvenir stalls, and subpar seafood spots, but Bistro Moulin is just one block away to rescue you. Go for a romantic dinner with someone you already like—that way you won't have to worry about breathing on them after you dive into their French onion soup topped with melty gruyère. You can’t go wrong with any entree, but the best one is the moules frites. It comes with perfectly cooked mussels and a sauvignon blanc-shallot sauce swimming with herbs that’s exactly what you’ll want to dunk your fries in. If you somehow have any room left, finish the meal with the profiteroles stuffed with ice cream and drizzled in Belgian chocolate." - allison green, gabi moskowitz

"Near the East River, Le Moulin à Café is part coffee shop, part bistro, part French grocery store—and charming. If you’re not ordering to-go, the counter spots overlooking York Avenue are prime real estate—and somewhere you can post up to do work, trading your latte for a glass of wine later in the day. There are also tables (with waiter service) in the back of Le Moulin, though."

I’d love to give this place five stars because there’s clearly been a lot of care go into crafting a lovely space, but as spacious, clean and comfortable as it is, I was disappointed by two things today. One is, please do not charge $13 for a “fruit plate” with only melon and a couple of grapes. Honestly. The second thing was the attitude of our server, Alberto. He was very pushy, rather rude and made us feel like we weren’t able to relax, frankly ruining our experience.

Julie Schultz

Google
The menu choices at this place are clean, healthy (mostly!), and delicious, and the presentation is good. The main dining area has a skylight, which means it feels airy and light like a French cafe should. It can be a bit loud when it is full, but the food is too beautiful to interrupt with much conversation, anyway! (Getting quiche and pastries to go is also a tasty (and speedy) option.)

Google
Had breakfast here that was delicious, really enjoyed my croissant bacon and egg sandwich but the prices were way too high. Cannot justify the prices

Google
Ambiance (5/5): Lovely little café with indoor and outdoor seating. Some serviced seating as well as order at the front and sit yourself space as well. The bright colors and openness gives the café a lot of charm. There's foreign products along the inside of the store (not sure if they can be purchased). Service (5/5): The staff was super friendly and struck conversations while we dined (not forcefully so). They have regulars with dogs who come to visit and love the staff too. They were quick to attend to us. We would have sat for longer but we were politely told to give up our table at around the hour mark to seat a bigger party :( Food: Eggs Benedict (5/5): The $23 plate came with a nicely dressed salad with veggie variety and well done fries that were cooked with the perfect crunch! The eggs benedict hollandaise sauce was a bit too tart for my preference but otherwise cooked with a perfect runny poached egg. My friend had their crepe that looked pretty good. Definitely will want to return to try the rest of their menu!

Le Moulin is a delightful spot for sweet & savory snacks (good sandwiches and pastries).

Google
One of the nicer cafes on the paper East. They have a large dining space at the back. We came on a Saturday morning and the place was packed. Still they found us a table. I ordered an omelette that came with a salad and fries. It was delicious. I didn't give it a 5 stars because the host indicated our whole group was present before being sitted we had an elderly woman, I'm disabled and we told them our third group member was just parking the car. Still we had to stand and wait for 10 minutes. Not very service oriented of them or sensitive.

Google
Been coming here for awhile. Food is good. The restaurant design is nice. The waiter fellow who was working outside tables Saturday afternoon was abrasive enough that it detracted from the meal. Going forward, if we can’t get a table without him, will take a pass. The rating would have been 4 or 5 without this guy.

Lauren Chielli

Google
The waiter was rude and when we asked him about buttering a croissant, he said they are too busy to do that. We also asked for them to cut the croissant in half and they were not thrilled about that as well. They failed to come back to check on us to see how we were doing. I was so disappointed, and I have been here before. I like convenience of this location, but they really need to improve their people skills.

Yelp
My favorite place to come to in the morning and get a hot latte and a freshly baked croissant. Although the breakfast is amazing, all of their food is homemade and delicious!

Lara G.

Yelp
We love it here for the cozy and european styled back eating area. It is a great place for a light and fast brunch. The staff are attentetive and bring everything quickly! The food may not stand out from numerous other brunch places, but its always solid.

Myriam L.

Yelp
The food is always good also for delivery they are fast everything are separate in different box properly In the restaurant everyone is nice and professional

Anna ..

Yelp
Aside from the few french groceries and croissants there's nothing french about this place anymore. All the staff speaks spanish, they won't seat you unless your whole party is here (even if you have a leg brace they make you stand and wait while others get to sit at tables without asking) Even the hollandaise sauce isn't hollandaise. It's warmed up chipotle mayo!! Gross

Yelp
An extremely disappointing services experience. Brought my laptop, asked for permission if it would be ok to use it while I enjoyed a cappuccino and chocolate croissant while sitting in 50 degree and empty outdoor tables at 11am. At 1130, a man came out and didn't even bother asking if I would like anything else and said I would have to leave as laptops not allowed. No acknowledgement or thanks for the business I gave, and no extended offer if I would like to actually spend more (I would have...). There's a lot of good cafe options in the neighborhood. I recommend going somewhere that appreciates the money you choose to spend with them.

Yelp
What an adorable little cafe on the ues! Very charming spot for a nice afternoon lunch. Ordered the chicken salad and it came out very fresh and chicken was just grilled! Very impressed. Would absolutely return! Great hidden ues gem!

Yelp
This place is basically like a French embassy on the Upper East Side. Food - French. People - French. Language - French. Currency accepted - Euros. Of course they also speak English and take US dollars, but basically you may as well be in Paris or maybe Nice... In the summer the tables outside are covered in coffees and pastries. In the winter they have a fire place going in the back of the restaurant section. So if you're craving a little taste of that old Republique but don't want an 8 hour flight, just come here.

Yelp
Le Moulin now has dinner!!! What an amazing addition to the UES! We have been to Paris several times and the food here is.....close. We have come to Le Moulin for coffee and lunch on multiple occasions. This was the first time (but not the last time) we had dinner. The food was great. We had: - The Charcuterie Board - meats with cheese, very good - Beef Bourguignon - delicious - Roasted Chicken - terrific - Creme Brûlée- delicious - Kir Royale - great Overall a great meal!

Yelp
Always Wonderful! Love the food - regardless if you are picking up a quick coffee and croissant or staying for amazing eggs Benedict or short braised ribs - you will not be disappointed- all are wonderful! And the service is great- especially Amy! Don't miss going here!

Yelp
Le Moulin Cafe was an accidental find one morning during my walk. I saw the outside seating and peeking inside I decided it looked like a good place for a light meal. I was definitely correct. I had to control myself at the front counter. There's a lot of pastries in the showcase. This place is not only a cafe but a store plus they will prepare gifts for your special occasions. I saw a customer using his laptop and one lady reading a book. There were two ladies chatting over coffee by the fireplace in the rear. It's a cafe where you can relax. The employee at the front counter was so nice and smiling. I looked over the whole place and took lots of photos of the cute decor. It's spacious and comfortable whether you're alone or with a friend. They open early for breakfast. I took photos of a couple of the menus. It took two visits for me to take in the whole scene. My photos are worth a thousand words. For me it's a nice spot for coffee and croissant. Check it out if you're in the neighborhood.

Yelp
I visited New York City recently with a friend, and we met up with one of her friends who lives on the Upper East Side for coffee. She suggested we meet at Le Moulin. It is a really cute, little café. They have plenty of seating inside, as well as a few little tables outside. We sat outside and enjoyed our coffee and snack. They have a case full of yummy looking pastries and treats! I tried the Macarons which were delicious. They also have a full breakfast, lunch, and dinner menu. We did not try any of those items, but I wish we could have! They also have a fun selection of French grocery items for purchase.

Yelp
Ok French brunch spot with the usual items. Not particularly memorable though just average.

Yelp
I went here pretty regularly. Twice a week for lattes, and I'd get desserts here for any dinner party I had or went to. But today was such an awful experience, I won't be back. I suggested to a friend we get coffees here. I walked to the tables to wait to be seated, like the sign said. I asked for a table as my friend was a block away. The waiter told me to wait out front until he got there. I'm very visibly pregnant but sure...I'll go stand Then we waited...awhile. We ordered tea and cake. Was told very rudely that the tables were only for lunch. We could sit up front. That was not clear at all. It was also 2pm so lunch was ending. It was so rude and uncompromising. I'll never go back

Yelp
Went on a Saturday morning for coffees and pastries. Service was quick and ambiance was cute. I thought the ratio of espresso to milk was off and the croissant was underwhelming. It was oily and flat for my taste. Overall a cute spot but others in the area I would choose to return to over this place.

Yelp
Food is fresh and delicious. Quick service. Plenty of seating for breakfast. I like that there is no intrusive music, easy to have a conversation without raising your voice.

JEANNE L.

Yelp
Excellent food. Nice ambience. I had a BLT croissant with turkey. Delicious and my husband had a egg Benedict and he cleaned his plate. Love this place

Yelp
The breakfast menu is somewhat limited, but if you are familiar with French breakfasts, you will be very satisfied. I've had lunch here, but this was my first breakfast. The Parisian Breakfast for Two was $25. Bread, chocolate, jam, butter, plus coffee. What else does one need in the morning? Always a lively mix of customers. Everyone speaks softly, though, and it's more tranquil than some coffee shops. One day I'll finally make it there for dinner.
google avatar

Joyce H.

Yelp
My friend recommended this place for their pastries and it didn't disappoint! We got croissants, opera cake, and the coffee eclair. Both pastries were great, I preferred the eclair, and the croissant was starting to soften, but I guess that's my fault for coming here mid-afternoon when they've been sitting out.

Yelp
Moulin is a wonderful neighborhood gem. The dining room is pleasant, but when it is warm out, they have outdoor seating. Food is outstanding and is a great value for the money. For morning breakfast, they offer excellent croissants and other pastries with a full array of coffee and espresso. The lunch and dinner menus are diverse, but with lots of French classics - onion soup, crepes, salad niçoise. Their fries are among the best in the city; ditto their hamburger. Dinner is delicious, and there is a good, but limited wine list. My wife thinks their salmon is about as good as it gets. I like their steak. Service is always friendly and helpful. One negative is that they don 't take reservations, even for large groups.

Ken C.

Yelp
vibrant brunch spot came here with some peeps for brunch. came here sat morning without a res, seated right away. tables are small but had a very vibrant cozy vide. they have a decent number of offerings. I went for the 3 topping omelet w ham spinach and mushrooms. it was cooked well and served with salad and fries. it was a generous portion. they did seem eager to rush us out which is my main critique. the prices are little higher as with most things in the UES but nothing too crazy
google avatar

John B.

Yelp
This place was great. It looks like you order at the counter, but go to the back for table service. Coffee and a Croque Madam hits the spot every time. The party was happy and I loved the spot. Highly recommend.
google avatar

Nye S.

Yelp
I have had brunch and dinner here and both are excellent. The omlette with fries and salad is a great choice! For dinner I had the short ribs with mashed potatoes which were amazing! The service has always been great. The indoor ambience is great especially in the winter with the fireplace.

Yelp
I have been living in the neighborhood for years and never tried this place before today. It was a gem of a find. The pastries were great, the coffees, the hospitality, the atmosphere, the music, everything was just perfect. This is a wonderful place to meet a friend, go on a date, spend some alone time, or a family dinner. I definitely want to go back for Dinner. I was intrigued by the fun European Grocery Items, and warm and friendly customer service.

Robin S.

Yelp
I've loved this place for years. The croissants and baguettes are excellent and the owner is lovely. Unfortunately, Jessica the Manager has let me know that I am not a valued customer. An item was left out of my $55 order on Saturday. I called and was promised a call back. Didn't receive a call back after 5days. Walked in today (also to purchase) and Jessica spoke with me in a manner which devolved and concluded with Jessica advising that she was so sorry for my "champagne" problems.. My champagne problems are that I am often working 15hrs instead of my scheduled 12hr due to shortage of frontline healthcare workers, due to a difficult hospitalization my Mom cannot stand and care is complicated, and i had to go to the ER as a patient myself today. Very "champagne", Jessica. My Mom has had a tough time and she loves the food from Le Moulin, but while Jessica is there I am unlikely to return. Exceptionally ugly behavior.

Rob C.

Yelp
Nice ambiance, friendly service, quality expresso and coffee and a nice place to have in the neighborhood.
google avatar

Yelp
Cute little french cafe in the UES neighborhood. I tried this place out during NYC restaurant week and if you are ever around, looking for a cute place, I'd recommend this. I would highly recommend the pate for appetizer!

Nadia M.

Yelp
I had lunch: The spinach crepe was heated in a microwave! And was served hardly warm. Spinach was obviously frozen food. The salad was obviously not fresh. The peach tart cooked in a microwave ? Peach from a can? Nothing was good or crispy enough. Never again, thanks.
google avatar

Yelp
June 6 update: I've been out of town for a few weeks and missing this place. Have it another shot today. My usual breakfast order (croissant du moulin) and a special treat (chocolate croissant) for later. The croissant du moulin had plastic in it. Thankfully it was in my last bite. The chocolate croissant had a 3" string in it. Also, conveniently, in my last bite. But still pretty disappointing.

Sofya Y.

Yelp
Can't substitute any part of the meal. I didn't want salad and fries and asked for fruit instead, they said "no". Wanted them to not cook my egg and steak on oil because I have IBS, they said "no" (now I have a stomach ache). They really rushed me too. Was waiting for my friend and even though I was drinking a coffee and a mimosa, they said I gotta order food cause they can't just have me sitting there. Food was ok, just wish they'd alter for customers like 99% of all other restaurants/cafes I've been to. Was the stomach ache worth it? Not at all.

Niki S.

Yelp
The egg croissant is to die for. I could spend my entire morning here. It's a cute, cozy, authentic, French cafe. There isn't full wait staff unless you're sitting outside but that doesn't take away from the experience at an all in my opinion. Definitely make a stop. They have a case with some pastries as well...
google avatar

Emma C.

Yelp
Amazing food! We got the BLT croissant, a custom omelet, the french toast, and a crepe, plus iced coffee for everyone. Everything was delicious! I loved my omelet and it comes with delicious fries and a nice salad - it was filling but not overly heavy. Would definitely recommend!
google avatar

Yelp
Love this business and have been going to Le Moulin since the time they first opened before two other French patisseries popped up nearby. Related to that, Le Moulin is now charging a 3% credit card fee on top of their advertised price which is illegal in NYC. They are only able to offer a discount for paying cash off of their advertised price. With Julien Boulangerie charging a 3.99% credit card fee down the block and now Le Moulin imposing this illegal surcharge, I think there needs to be a crack down on these illegal charges which while seen across the city are especially pervasive in a neighborhood that is arguably already paying among the highest prices for food and services in Manhattan.
google avatar

Poh L.

Yelp
Always the best ambience and a quality breakfast. Le Moulin is a neighborhood favorite of ours. They specifically have an excellent breakfast menu, with a variety of croissant sandwiches. Also, check out their tasty pastries selection and ground coffee. Highly recommended!
google avatar

Jeslyn M.

Yelp
Small but mighty. Cute brunch spot with good amount of food options. There are outdoor and indoor dining. They also sell different French bites and snacks inside. I tried the croque de madame, the fragrant swiss cheese and the ham indeed make a heavenly combination. It also comes with a side of salad/fries which really just tops it off. $17 well spent. Definitely recommend.

Max M.

Yelp
Rules, rules and more rules is what you will get with your food at this UES french eatery turned Nutcraker museum for the holidays. For example did you know that some tables are for coffee only and that some others have a minimum number of food plates you need to order to keep breathing this Parisian atmosphere? if you are into french moms and want to meet them after they drop off their petit enfants across the street at the prestigious Lycee, this is the joint to come and consume some cafe au lait with an imported petit ecolier cookie.
google avatar

Stephanie C.

Yelp
Came for dinner on a Friday night without reservations and was seated right away. Food was only OK. Ordered the chicken and the skirt steak, recommended by the waiter. Chicken was better than the steak, but the potatoes with the steak were great. Giving the place 4 stars because the service was friendly, and the place is cute and very casual - a great option if you have a noisy baby in tow and are craving some French food.

Betty J M.

Yelp
Delicious food, excellent service and warm atmosphere. A must go to with a real country French feel
google avatar

Devon S.

Yelp
Sitting outside with my best friend on her birthday... I asked if they have any special mimosas and the server rudely responded no (they used to). My friend orders first (who is not feeling well) and just wants a croissant for her stomach. He rudely says if that's all we're ordering we need to leave. I tell him that I'm ordering food, he repeats himself and I order. The whole experience was baffling. 2 stars because love this place and the food is great...I order delivery. I realize it's been a tough year but don't drive away business for jumping down my throat before I even have a chance to order.
google avatar

Ofelia E.

Yelp
I work 1 block away from here and decided to finally check out this place since it always seems moderately busy. I got the Canadian panini (chicken, cheese, pesto, tomatoes and greens) and French fries. Panini was okay. It seemed like it was one of those prepackaged sandwiches you get at Starbucks. Truthfully the Starbucks ones are better- they're bigger, tastier, and cheaper. French fries were great, crispy and salty. Paid a total of $17 but overall not impressed.
google avatar

Ada K.

Yelp
My friend and I were horrified to look up from our table and see two extremely racist vintage French 'Banania' cacao powder boxes proudly on display. It must be noted that these are vintage confectionary boxes--they are not being used for cooking or for sale. They have been chosen for their apparent display and aesthetic value. Which is absolutely shocking. How could no one have noticed how racist these items are? How is this establishment not embarrassed and ashamed to display these on their shelves? These images represent the most disgusting and reprehensible part of French culture and history. These images are profoundly offensive, disrespectful attacks on human dignity and are the direct product of deeply racist French colonial stereotypes of black people. A cursory google search of Banania's advertising history provides ample evidence as to the ongoing controversy and rage these images have produced, including a lawsuit. Please if anyone from the staff reads this, remove these insulting objects from view.

Yelp
First time in this ADORABLE place for brunch today.....LOVED IT! Everything about this place is warm and charming from the staff to the decor and definitely the food. They have tons of yummy brunch options and pastry to drool over! So happy our son lives around the corner ...we will be back many times I'm sure!

Yelp
Oh it was a lovely sunny day. Nearly two years into a global pandemic. Upon showing up, I clearly told the woman seating people that I was waiting for my friend. "No problem!" Here I am thinking, "oh nyc, I know you have such a bad reputation but I've lived here so long. Maybe you're making a comeback." Maybe people finally realized they don't have to be pretentious assholes. Maybe not. I am finishing my iced coffee (that I ordered at the restaurant) and drinking my water on this hot sunny september day. I never use my phone at restaurants but I called my mom to tell her how nice it was to be out again when out of nowhere, a waiter abruptly comes over, interrupts me and says frustratedly that I was holding the table during their busy hour and that if my friend didn't come soon, I would have to leave. (Insert my very shocked and disappointed though not surprised internal response.) I explained firmly how I was seated under very clear pretenses that my friend was not there yet and when I waved the alleged friendly host over to ask why this was happening, after i explained that I would be waiting, she said, "ah, but your friend still isn't here and that was a long time ago." It had been 30 minutes and as I pointed out, there were about 5 open tables. I was drinking coffee that I ordered. I said in my tone, "wow. Well, thank you for being so sweet about it and if I wasn't waiting for someone, I would leave right now. You really know how to make people feel good during these tough times." Suffice to say they rushed us and I only ate because my friend was eating and I didn't want her to feel uncomfortable. I never review but shame on you- you don't deserve my money after this year of struggle and you are why I am moving from nyc. You should be thanking your customers for still coming to you during a global pandemic when so many better restaurants have had to shut down. Food was whatever. It's another $15.00 omelette in nyc. Thank you for reminding me how done I am with this place.

Catherine L.

Yelp
I found this location via a blog I read in preparation for a trip to NY (yorkavenueblog). We had a wonderful lunch here and would highly recommend it for a cozy atmosphere and great food! My husband had an omelette and I had a chicken crepe. There's a bakery with lots of options for tasty treats, too. It's definitely worth adding to your plans whether you're a local or tourist!

Yelp
Cute and convenient! This little cafe is just adorable, and a great upper east side gem. Breakfast and sit down dishes are a little pricey, but if you're looking for a quick stop to grab some French pastries (caneles, croissants, etc.;) it's perfect!

Robert B.

Yelp
I drop in with my granddaughter to buy a lava cake or croissant. They are always fresh and delicious. The service is efficient and friendly. The place is well kept and decorated so it's a nice place to visit. Great for the neighborhood.
google avatar

Errol H.

Yelp
Nice little spot with fresh food and pastries. Good service. The menu is solid. Indoor and outdoor seating. Very consistent. They always have a stash of good treats and chocolates as well. A bit pricey.

Yelp
I found my new neighborhood favorite!! I visited Le Moulin a Cafe twice within 30 or so days of each other and I can honestly say that it will be a mainstay in my brunch rotation. I love the bacon egg croissant sandwich, and I don't even like sandwiches! Their croissant is nice and soft without being too flaky. The bacon is crispy (not my favorite), but I deal with it because the sandwich as a whole is so good. I LOVE that it comes with a generous side salad, which is super refreshing, drizzled in their house balsamic vinaigrette. The omelettes here are also incredibly fluffy, as other reviewers have mentioned. Very cohesive and the omelette ingredients are not undercooked. Service is also really great, and the owner/manager seemed to remember us from our first visit?? Or maybe they were just being nice. Or maybe it was a case of mistaken identity. Regardless, it felt really nice to be treated like a familiar face. They also offer boozy brunch cocktails, which I have not tried yet. The only disappointment was their iced latte, which was not made well and was really pricey. I think it was over $5 and it tasted like the espresso was burnt. That's a bummer Though it's about 10 blocks away from me, I'm willing to make the trek especially in nice weather. You'll be seeing a lot of me this summer!
google avatar

Jennifer L.

Yelp
I was craving a pain au chocolat and stopped in here to satisfy my stomach. Highly recommend the flaky, fresh pastry and sitting in to dine. Staff was also very friendly for an early Monday morning. Storefront is unique and inside is homey.

Yelp
Bumping up my review to a 5 because this place is just consistently awesome everytime we get up to UES. I just love their breakfast. Omelettes are perfectly cooked and they have a wide variety of what you can put in your omelette. And the quiche is delicious - exactly what quiche should taste like. They definitely have variety - its not just quiche lorraine like a lot of places do.
