17 Atlanta Restaurants to Explore Dishes From Around the African Continent

"Founded by a Togolese mother-daughter team, this Stone Mountain West African restaurant offers a homey vibe paired with equally homey dishes on the menu. Expect dishes like debee (grilled lamb) served with jollof rice or fried yams in a savory onion sauce, the jollof broken rice dish thieboudien served with a medley of fish and vegetables, stews like egusi, and chicken yassa cooked in mustard sauce." - Carolyn Desalu

Yelp
Hands down, this place has the best West African food in Atlanta. My sister and our husbands ordered the following dishes: 1. Pepper Soup with Assorted Meat 2. Okra Soup with Goat Meat 3. Egusi Soup with Assorted Meat 4. Peanut Butter Soup with Assorted Meat 5. 4 Sides of Pounded Yam Each dish was full of flavor and filled with generous amounts of protein that was nice and tender. Everything was delicious but my favorite was the Okra Soup. We enjoyed our food so much that we each ordered an additional meal to take home. The food and service was outstanding! Everyone was so friendly, welcoming, and attentive. Highly recommend!

Yelp
Good food, good mood and I'm delighted I discovered this place! I visited around lunchtime and indulged in some delicious suya that exceeded my tastebuds expectations. The portion size was satisfying, packed with flavor. Pairing it with jollof rice made for the perfect combo! Although I initially ordered my food for takeout, I ended up choosing to dine at the bar instead. The customer service was incredibly welcoming, which greatly enhanced the overall dining experience. When dining here, it's worth considering that while most food is made fresh to order, it may require some patience. However, the deliciousness of the food makes the wait worthwhile. Additionally, the restaurant features several beautiful art pieces that stand out and enhance the ambiance. My overall experience was a vibe and I look forward to trying some of the other delectable entrees.

Yelp
My friend took me here for my first time eating West African food! He was more familiar and said that this was THE spot. We had the Suya as a starter, and shared the Egusi with goat and the Debee with a side of jollof rice. Everything was so tasty! The beef in the Suya was so wonderfully flavored, and I love pairing grilled meats with raw onion to cut the richness and that little sprinkling of suya pepper powder brought a nice level of heat and extra flavor. The egusi was amazing--I love the consistency and savoriness of the stew with the tender meat and pillowy fufu. Debee was also great, very much enhanced by the onion sauce and the jollof. There are a lot of things I would like to come back and try. There were three of us, we shared those three dishes, and were definitely satisfied.

Yelp
I have been looking for good African food in Atlanta for the longest , they are all either closed down or open weird hours. Le Nouveau Maquis is the bomb ! The suya was good and the egusi soup and fufu was bomb ! Quick service and I'll definitely be back to try more menu items

Yelp
I recently stumbled upon this amazing African restaurant on a random weekday, and I can't stop raving about it! The food was beyond delicious and had such an authentic taste. Sure, it was pretty spicy, but that just added to the overall flavor experience. Definitely worth a try!

Yelp
This place is excellent and very authentic. I highly recommend eating here! I ate the Peanut Butter Soup and it was so good! The ambience was excellent and the music was perfect. The service was great too and all the staff were very pleasant and attentive. Again, HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

Yelp
Thank you for making my Thursday night dinner delicious!! Your restaurant continues to excel every time with the freshest ingredients and quality, great customer service, and great prices. This restaurant is truly one of the best in Georgia, and one of my favorite restaurants.

Yelp
Flew in to Atlanta and made time to stop in to try this place. I was NOT disappointed! Every item I ordered HIT!. Service was very good. The servers were welcoming and nice. The ambiance was also a nice vibe. My order did not come out on African time (IYKYK). It came out in good time. But again, the FOOD! Try the Senegalese jollof rice and the suya. Thank me later. Will be back to try more from the menu. 10/10 for my first visit.

Yelp
It took everything I had not to bear hug the chef. I'm convinced everything on the menu is spectacular. I've been coming here almost three years. You can count on this place! Have patience. The food may not come out exactly when it to but I believe it will be worth it!

Yelp
This place has declined drastically. The food used to be good, especially when they were small & at that back of that grocery store, back when Fanta herself used to cook. I dont know who cooks now, but the last 3xs I gave them a chance the food was Horrible ALL 3xs. As someone who cooks I can't understand serving bad food , old food at that. First The food is NOT fresh Anymore, they used to have what soups were cooked that day. Now they do like most other African restaurants they cook the food on a certain day I'm guessing & freeze it. Then reheat when you order. The taste or lack thereof shows. The food is either Very bland, or Very salty. For instance last two fish I ordered one was very burnt & dry/overcooked making it inedible the other Had ZERO TASTE OR FLAVOR. which is sad cause the fish used to be good. The sauces are very salty yet not tasteful. The worst is it's clear their old & previously frozen. I'd go elsewhere, I will NOT be supporting this business. They're more focused on expanding & increasing their prices. Yet the food quality has declined. The service is ok, girls at the front are nice. When you ask them what sauces are cooked fresh they tell you All. which is a Big lie. Not sure who cooks now but food just isn't good anymore. Also their trying to cook all different types of African food, but they don't execute it well. Like their cassava leaves is trash. Potato leaf trash. Their possoin brazier used to be good but trash now too. Ambiance is basic, the vibe is just a basic restaurant cheap furniture with some African pieces to make it look a bit ethnic. All the way in Stone Mountain yet the prices don't reflect that. Overall I'll pay anything for FRESH GOOD FOOD, but NOT FOR OLD FROZEN Food. Wouldn't recommend

Yelp
After my gf showed me this place on tiktok, we had to come immediately after reading how good the reviews were everywhere... It was definitely worth the hype and more! We ordered the lamb deebee and jollof for the appetizer. Then we had the okra soup with beef, and the egusi with smoked turkey. Both with fufu. The flavors were definitely on point, nice & spicy which we loved! The juice was amazinggggg! We mixed the sorrel and ginger and it was perfect! The service was excellent, as our waitress was helping us decide on what we should order and drink selections. She was very sweet, wish I caught her name. If you're looking for authentic west African food, I'd definitely recommend.. this is my new go to..

Yelp
The food is good. The price is a bit too high for the amount of food they give. Service is slow. Order food waaaaaayyyy in advance, because many orders get called in.
google avatar

Ambrya M.

Yelp
This food is MAGNIFICENT. I'm at lost of words. I order grilled tilapia, with jollof rice, and a side of plantains.. 10/10. The customer service was nice, nothing over the top but our server was pleasant. The taste of the fish was just so good. The seasoning and spice was perfect.
google avatar

Yelp
If I could give this place no stars I would. This was the worst experience in a restaurant I've had in years. First of all I didn't like my food after 2 bites. Left the food and then got overcharged because the menu said add rice for $2 and he charged me $8. A whole mess because the menu need to specify certain meats don't get a side for $2. I'll never go there again and will not recommend any one my friends or family to go there. When I walked in the waitress ignored me as if I wasn't even there. Guy came from around the bar to help me. I'm like what type of customer service is this well I should've followed my first mind to leave.

Yelp
LOVE LOVE LOVE this place!!! I get it everytime I am in the area. The fish is so good! everything is good!

Pihilip M.

Yelp
Their time management sucks , It said open at 12pm but still close 12:30 pm The should operate like an establishment not like a neighborhood eatery
google avatar

Yaya A.

Yelp
Amazing and delicious food! I also liked the ambiance inside and the servers were nice.
google avatar

Christina E.

Yelp
This was my first visit and everything was delicious. I had questions and every last one was answered. Good customer service and good food.
google avatar

Tauheedah M.

Yelp
So she offered a refund or to remake it, I opted to get it remade. It was slightly better but they really should care more about their customers and buy a better quality cut of meat. It still was very fatty and lots of bones. I don't know who cooked Saturday 5/7/22 but the food was delicious. That's the only reason I rushed back. I guess I'm still on a hunt to find the best Cheb in Atlanta bc this is too expensive to serve meat like this and the rice had a strong gamey flavor which it shouldn't if the lamb is cooked properly. I'll add a picture of a pic of the meat. They were all pretty much like this...
google avatar

Kimberley G.

Yelp
Not sure if I will come back and give this restaurant a second chance. The sign says that they close at 9 but when we arrived at 8:37 to order takeout, we were told that the kitchen is closed. Why don't you just close at 8:30 since you close the kitchen at 8:30? The employees were just standing at the counter saying the kitchen is closed but the entire restaurant was empty. It's okay because we left and ordered from Mina's.

Yelp
Very clean, service was great! The taste and flavors were phenomenal!!! I'm so glad we came! I'm doing my happy food dance!

Yelp
The food here taste great, it covers a mixture of several nationalities food's mostly Liberian, Nigerian, Cote de Viore and Sierra Leone. It's a good thing that Americans are actually eating more west African foods to say the least. The staff is friendly and the restaurant is extremely unusually clean. So why give it two stars dude it takes an extremely long time to get your food it's best to order at least an hour in advance because you'll be in their waiting trust me. Even while it's slow!

Jona R.

Yelp
Really amazing West African food! We has Jollof and Goat Stew and Efo Riro with pounded yam. The meat was tender, everything was well seasoned and the spice was well balanced! I will be dreaming about the Jollof Rice I can't wait to come back! And the staff was very friendly too!

Lovely H.

Yelp
My husband loves this place, they have very good food but it can be pricey and the portions are small for the money that you pay. I only gave it 4 stars because it's not enough of food for the money you paid for it!
google avatar

Naa'ila M.

Yelp
We order here at least twice a month. Dat jollof rice.... Yasss! They understood the assignment! We usually get the lamb. Now, when it comes to plantains, I prefer them soft and crispy. This spot doesn't prepare them that way, but still good.
google avatar

Ashley J.

Yelp
Every thing was wonderful. First time trying Egusi and fufu.. loved it and will definitely be back
google avatar

Catia D.

Yelp
Amazing food! I tried the grilled snapper and it was so tasty! I'm going to try the lamb and cassava leaf next. It's so hard to find good African food in GA with great service. I definitely recommend!

Yelp
What a hidden gem. Nestled in a shaggy area is a cute little place with beautiful interior and amazing food. Like 10/10 food. Food made with so much love it makes you cry. So let's get into it! First the egusi. If y'all don't know about egusi, it is the best soup west Africa has to offer, complete with spinach, melon seed and a tomato/pepper based stew. The one served here was fabulous. Honestly it could compete with my moms. They really blew it out the park. We moved on to the beef suya which was grilled and smoked meat so tender and delicious. It was perfect and I liked the long slabs. This was my first time having Thieboudienne and it did not disappoint. The flavor in those little broken pieces of rice was just shocking. Alarming really. The lamb was a sweet surprise and complemented the rice perfectly. Just amazing THE SNAPPER. At this point I was close to tears. How can the snapper be fried perfectly crunchy, flavored down to the bone, and covered in a sauce like this? I sat back and pondered how the heck this restaurant could not miss. Did not miss at all. Not pictured is a delicious Jollof rice. So ATL, if you are a lover of good food and great service, go and patronize this business. The best food I have had all year. It was a blessing the day found this. I will be going here for life. Note: there is not a lot of seating and no liquor license yet so keep that in mind.

Yelp
This place is the only African restaurant I would recommend in Atlanta. The atteike, fish, and plantain is alway phenomenal. The restaurant is clean and they take apply pay !
google avatar

Laquasha T.

Yelp
My first experience trying Nigerian inspired food. Definitely a taste I would have to get use to. The service was amazing!! The place was clean and well lite.
google avatar

Iman P.

Yelp
Probably the best African food on the east side ...kinda reminds me of grandmas cooking. My dad liked the tilapia as well and he's from East Africa and usually likes spicy food. just wish they included sides with the dishes like they used to.
google avatar

Dina S.

Yelp
Grabbed dinner to go from here yesterday and was very satisfied! I ordered over the phone and the lady who took my order was very nice and patient! I ordered the grilled fish with Jollof rice, as well as the deebee with fried plantains. It took about 30mins for my food to be ready. Everything tasted really good! The fish was fresh and the deebee was so tender! Overall, the food tasted very well seasoned and authentic. Picking up my food was also very easy and smooth and the lady who helped me checkout was really nice! Very pleased with my order and excited to have a new African spot in the area!

Deserae F.

Yelp
I usually enjoy my food from this place but the last time I ordered from here I could not finish my food, I had to throw it away. The smell was soo strong ( like poop smell) I do not know if the meat was washed properly or what but the smell was so strong and I got sick that night. throwing up sick. I won't be eating there for a while which sucks because I usually enjoy the food here.
google avatar

Kharyisma S.

Yelp
One of the best African cuisine restaurants I've ever had. Since going vegetarian, it's been difficult finding a place that will cook their soups without meat while still having great flavor. Le Nouveau Maquis hit it right on the head. I went 3 days in a row just for their egusi. If you're vegetarian looking for good African food, this is the place to go.
google avatar

Nino B.

Yelp
Great authentic west African food a little too Much palm oil though. I enjoy them a lot especially the cassava leaf with goat

Mykael S.

Yelp
The food is amazing and so is the service! Nice ambiance as well as the music is just right, not too loud and you can actually hear the person with you. Great experience, can't wait to dine in again!
google avatar

Andje Y.

Yelp
I'm Congolese and I've never had Senegalese food. It is BOMB! I'm obsessed with theiboudienne! The jollof rice with beef was delicious. It was more than enough for me and my sisters! Definitely going back!

Jada E.

Yelp
Their stews with fufu is sooooo good! I love this place and the environment is very welcoming. I would recommend to anyone trying African cuisine for the first time to eat here.
google avatar

Tíbor G.

Yelp
My best friend and I were so delighted to find this little restaurant! We tried to go to one down the street but they were temporarily closed. I've been telling her so much about west African food and so to finally get to share that experience with her meant everything to me. I had goat Toborgee with fufu and she had cassava leaf stew which she really enjoyed as well. Definitely a memorable dining experience.

Kira G.

Yelp
The food and service were great! I arrived to GA in 2020 and just could not find a find a African restaurant to hit the mark! Although it is a distance from my home I do not mind making the drive.
google avatar

Kamyra P.

Yelp
I love the food here. Tried it once and was literally hooked. Worth the price me and my family have sat down inside and ordered to go it's still good both ways. There's a little wait after you order but I'm fine with it because the food is always hot and fresh!
