Le Petit Jardin

"As its name ("The Little Garden") suggests, this traditional fine dining restaurant has one of the prettiest terraces in the city, nestled in a lush, quiet garden. There is a subdued and bucolic atmosphere in the dining area with its large glass-paned façade, where the beautifully presented seasonal dishes are served. Those with a sweet tooth won't be disappointed by the delicious desserts, such as the remarkable trompe l'œil lemon, fleur de sel sablé biscuit and lemon sorbet. There is also a bistro serving international cuisine." - Michelin Inspector

Beautiful location in a garden courtyard with views of the Cathedral. However, the food is definitely average at best with some of the savoury dishes too salty or much too sweet. Service was pretty patchy with numerous errors- we received the main courses and wine for the table to the right of us, our dessert was another tables again and the table to the left of us also got another tables main course. Felt a bit like a comedy of errors. I'm certain there are better restaurant options. But might be lovely for a pre dinner drink if possible. Highly recommend our wine if you do visit (photo included)

We came here on a day trip to visit family. On entry this place has a wow factor. The exterior seating area is beautiful. You are walled in by live green foliage and large white umbrellas shade you from direct sun but creates a light bright dining experience. Everyone seemed to be there for a special occasion. Twice we saw lit firework candles conveyed to 2 different tables. We chose from the combo set on a Saturday. The crème cauliflower amuse-bouche was tasty. Individual bread rolls were distributed. The first batch were browned nicely and crusty. The second round were anemic in color and soft. The beef carpaccio was disappointing. It was thick, fully cooked and had gristle pieces in it. The sardine tartare was better. The pork pluma was inconsistent in portion size across our table. I found the flavoring odd like an overdose of pumpkin pie spice and star anise and the sweet potato puree. The desserts were pretty. The apricot overpowered the muscat for the baba. The cute white chocolate lemon was cracked to reveal whipped cream filling with grated lemon and accompanying lemon sorbet. On the surface it largely looked the part of a 4-5 star food place but I personally had to give it a 3 for taste/texture/seasoning balance (acid, fat, salt, etc)

As a family, we were looking for a good restaurant and ended up at Petit Jardin. We ordered a variety of appetizers and main courses, but unfortunately, none of them met the high restaurant quality we were hoping for. The service was somewhat lacking, which affected our overall impression. While the staff was friendly, they seemed to have limited restaurant experience. The food was just okay, and although the ambiance was pleasant, it didn't quite make up for the other shortcomings. Overall, the delivery of food and service did not match the pricing.

Well, this is a hard review to write. As a restaurant who terms itself with a „great experience“ and was even mentioned as „fine dining“ (for sure not close to a star rating) we left somewhat disappointed. There is no smile from the service personell, rather cold mood from them. If you are asked about still or sparkling water, make sure to explicitly ask for a carafe of water or you‘ll pay for still Evian. The menu sounds great and is well priced, but I‘ll come to that. What really did disappoint was the table setting. Dirty napkins we had to have changed, cracked wine glass and overall dire servers. Please work on this. The menu selection is good, we went for carpaccio and the goat cheese based entree; both okay but lacking flavor. The goat cheese one is pure goat, nothing to counter or enhance it’s own flavor. We also never had iberian plum served that had two different cooking points of the 3 pieces served. Here as well: combined with sweet potatoes it lacked something special, something with more spice or a fruity / citrus aspect to level the otherwise earthy taste. Cheese platter was good, but it’s France so one can expect a good selection. The service, napkin and cracked glass combined with sub-par food really did disappoint. Maybe everyone had a bad day, but this should not happen in an otherwise great surrounding.

Extremely disappointing experience at Le Petit Jardin. I think the only thing this place has going for it is the pretty terrace. But bring bug spray and a fan, it’s not at all comfortable during the summer. I don’t know if it was just a terrible evening - other reviewers seem to have had a similar experience - but it’s like the place was run by a B team on their first day of work. Forgotten aperitifs, forgotten wine order (which was finally comped, thanks), table not cleared before the next course, olive oil but no bread, and just very average food. There are much better restaurants in Montpellier.

This was unfortunately a great disappointment. The restaurant seems mainly to have untrained very young summer jobbers on staff. The food is okay, the atmosphere is nice but the service is absolutely disappointing: 1) we were greeted by two young staffers at the reception. Neither of them was allowed to show us the table. We had to wait for a third one. 2) we were served olives and olive oil. We waited for bread but when the server came, he simply took the untouched tray away again for the amuse bouche. 3) Funnily, they forgot to clear the table after the amuse bouche, causing the young waitress to struggle when she brought the starters 4) we had ordered an aperitif. It didn’t come until we asked after the starter. Turned out they forgot it. 5) it took about 1 hour between the starter and the main course to arrive. The people at the neighboring table got annoyed and tried to leave. The staff convinced them to stay. 6) when the aperitif wasn’t served, we ordered wine instead. Guess what. It never arrived. 7) after the staff convinced the neighboring table to stay, a staffer came by our table and asked if everything was fine. We pointed out all the errors and problems. He finally got us wine and offered it on the house

Unfortunately we received our dishes, but the dish from our son was forgotten. After asking where it was, he was served an uncooked fish. After complaining he received his dish recooked, but no silverware. Because we had to wait, our dishes got cold. There were also no apologies. Everything tastes really good and the restaurant is quite nice, unfortunately the service is not good. Everything takes long and our empty glasses and dishes stood long on the table. After we paid and were leaving, they were so lost with their service that they asked in front of the door if we really had paid in a very unfriendly way. We have been to many restaurants in different countries and this was probably one of the worst services and experiences ever.

A colleague of mine and I had dinner at le Petit Jarden in Montpellier, France in June of this year and it was definitely the best dining experience I’ve ever had. We were sat at a table in the rear garden area of the restaurant which is beautifully appointed with lush plants and flowers. I ordered the “perfect egg” as a starter with the Iberian pig pluma as my main course. My colleague ordered the artichoke and crabmeat tortellini and the guinea fowl breast. These dishes were all exquisite and we enjoyed discovering the flavours, textures and presentation. The service was impeccable with several people attending our table to ensure we had enough bread, had water and were enjoying the dining experience. The wines available were amazing as well. I understand this restaurant has a Michelin one star rating and this is richly deserved. I can honestly state that dining at this restaurant was the highlight of my visit to Montpellier. If you’re ever in the area, this is an experience not to be missed.
