Where To Pick Your Own Seafood In Astoria - New York - The Infatuation

"Of all the spots on this list, Le Petit Pêcheur is the newest and quietest, so the Algerian restaurant (from the same owners as Merguez & Frites) is a good choice on an evening when you'd just like to walk in somewhere and eat fish without a side of birthday party. There’s never a line, so head right to the display case and point at everything you want until the person behind the counter’s eyes bulge. That’s when you know you’ve gone just far enough. If your spread doesn’t fit on the table, not to worry—they’ll just bring you another table." - willa moore, will hartman, sonal shah

Le Petit Pêcheur - Review - Astoria - New York - The Infatuation

"Of all the pick-your-own-seafood spots in Astoria, Le Petit Pêcheur is the easiest to walk into. So on an evening when you’d just like to eat an amount and variety of fish that no human body should ever ingest all at once, it’s a good choice. There’s never a line (and often not many people here in general) so you can head right to the display case up front and point at everything you want until the person behind the counter’s eyes bulge. (That’s when you know you’ve gone just far enough.) Always get the octopus, which is singed on the edges and scattered with lots of oregano, but also the grilled scallops in a rich lemon and butter sauce, and some grilled shell-on shrimp, which taste like they deserve to be eaten on the beach somewhere. And maybe some fried sardines to crunch on in between bites of everything else. If your spread doesn’t fit on the table, not to worry—they’ll just bring you another table. photo credit: Kate Previte photo credit: Kate Previte photo credit: Kate Previte photo credit: Kate Previte photo credit: Kate Previte Pause Unmute Food Rundown Spicy Feta Dip Once you’ve picked out all your seafood, you’ll sit down and get a separate menu of starters, sides, and salads. Go for the spicy feta dip. The creamy blend of roasted red peppers, chilis, and feta is a great snack to return to in between fried sardines and saucy octopus. Greek Salad A chunky greek salad with a big block of feta on top and a few pepperoncini peppers on top for some tang. Always a yes. photo credit: Kate Previte Fried Sardines These barely breaded sardines are impeccably crunchy, with a meaty inside. photo credit: Kate Previte Grilled Shrimp The grill on these shell-on shrimp is commendable, and the blackened edges shatter in your mouth like potato chips. photo credit: Kate Previte Sauteed Scallops For something a little more delicate, try the sauteed scallops, with lots of garlic and a lemony butter sauce so browned it almost tastes like a browned butter dessert. Grilled Octopus The general rule for eating seafood in Astoria is that you’ve got to order the octopus, and a meal at Le Petit Pêcheur should be treated no differently. Theirs is covered in oregano, and each suction cup is charred. photo credit: Kate Previte" - Willa Moore

The restaurant has a beautiful environment, we love the service and it’s a must try if you are in Astoria! We will come back there tonight! Amazing the owners!

Food was delicious! Love the personal Algerian twist to the seafood! Everything they brought out felt like it was cooked with the highest quality and products. We enjoyed every single bite and can’t wait to return to continue trying everything else out on the menu. Not seafood but would definitely recommend the roasted eggplant! Trust me.

Fresh - that's what you can expect from their seafood selection. The atmosphere and thr vibe of this place makes you feel relax. Great staff with top notch service. Though I wish they have alcoholic cocktails 😉. Definitely a must try place.

The food here is incredible, it’s fresh, great array and uniqueness of spices (but never too much), not oily and when you leave you feel so energized (best tell tale). Best of all, the staff is just top notch, including the owner Matin, who is just a pleasure. Highly recommend.

Google
5/5 experience! I’ve been here twice and ordered the Ecuadorian shrimp, branzino, whiting, seafood pasta, sardines and marlin. Every dish comes out perfectly seasoned and not fishy tasting (some fish can be too fishy even for the seafood eater)! There’s also a $20 lunch special during the weekday which comes with your choice of seafood fillet/shrimp, side and soda. There’s also sides to choose from and salads to buy. The service also includes bread on the side (no charge) and the service here is attentive. I didn’t even have to say to make sure to bring all the food out at the same time - it happened automatically! I highly recommend this local seafood restaurant and for sure will return.

The food was fresh, perfectly cooked and the selection was phenomenal! Service was outstanding Fried calamari was cooked to a golden crisp, tasted very savory with perfect seasoning There was another way they cooked the calamari but it was just as good! Grilled shrimp, AMAZING! the bread was a meal in itself and very delicious. Clams are outrageous and the lemon potatoes, my goodness!! Don't forget the sautéed spinach!!

Google
Quite possibly one of the best seafood spots in NYC. We got the grilled red snapper, mussels, fried calamari, asparagus, lemon potatoes. Everything was PERFECTION. The red snapper was so juicy and flavorful. The mussels with their white sauce is a must have. I will be seeing those mussels in my dreams.

Le Petit Pêcheur – A Mediterranean Jewel in Astoria Tucked away in Astoria, Le Petit Pêcheur has quickly built a strong reputation since opening a couple of years ago. Known for its fresh fish and Mediterranean flavors, it combines a market-style approach to seafood with the warm hospitality of a family-run restaurant. Atmosphere & Setting The restaurant captures the essence of the Mediterranean with its blue-and-white décor, reminiscent of seaside towns in Greece, Algeria, or Sidi Bou Saïd in Tunisia. The space is cozy, often buzzing with energy even at off-hours. On our visit for a late lunch around 2:30 pm, we were surprised to find the restaurant almost full, a clear sign of its popularity with locals and regulars alike. How It Works The experience begins at the fish counter, where guests choose from a selection of fresh seafood and fish on display. The staff then asks how you’d like it prepared, grilled, fried, or sautéed, before you return to your table to explore the menu of side dishes, salads, and drinks (including Algerian famous Hamoud Boualem). This interactive element sets the tone: simple, fresh, and personal. Food & Flavors The menu isn’t extensive, which is often a positive sign, it focuses on doing a few things exceptionally well. It features a mix of Mediterranean staples and Algerian specialties that highlight fresh ingredients and straightforward cooking. Seafood Selection: We tried jumbo shrimp grilled, whiting fried, flounder sautéed, and a small portion of Portuguese sardines marinated in-house. Every dish was cooked with care. The shrimp were perfectly tender yet slightly crisp, the sardines packed with flavor, the flounder delicate and well-seasoned, and the whiting golden and satisfying. Sides & Appetizers: To complement the seafood, we ordered "Hmiss", a classic North African dish of roasted green peppers, tomatoes, and garlic served warm with a drizzle of olive oil, a simple but deeply flavorful starter. The grilled asparagus added freshness and balance, while the garlic bread (likely complimentary) was a welcome touch. Service Flow: The dishes arrived quickly, perhaps a little too quickly for such a spread. Next time, we’d request staggered service to savor each fish one at a time. Also, tables for two can feel tight if you order several dishes, but staff remain attentive, checking in frequently to make sure everything is to your liking. Even the owner stopped by with a smile to ensure our meal was going well, a gesture much appreciated. Service & Hospitality From start to finish, the service was warm, professional, and efficient. The man at the counter explained everything clearly, and the servers maintained a friendly balance of attentiveness without hovering, hospitality is one of the restaurant’s strongest assets. Overall Impression Le Petit Pêcheur is a rare find: a place where the food is fresh, authentic, and consistently well-prepared, and where the atmosphere evokes the Mediterranean coast without pretense. Between the vibrant décor, the interactive seafood counter, and the outstanding dishes, the restaurant offers a dining experience that feels both unique and welcoming. We left more than satisfied, already planning to return. This is a spot to recommend to friends, family, or anyone looking for a taste of the Mediterranean in Queens. Verdict: Highly recommended, especially for seafood lovers who appreciate simple preparation and authentic flavors.

Yelp
Quality of fish is impeccable. I got the striped Seabass. Partner got the branzino. Got the eggplant & mashed potato sides. Blown away at how great the sides were. A warm addition to the neighborhood. Can't wait to come back. Superb service and lovely atmosphere as well.

Yelp
We LOVED everything here! The service and staff were incredibly hospitable. Everything had great flavor and was grilled perfectly. We loved the scallops and lemon potatoes the most! Also the virgin mojito was so refreshing. The restaurant was clean and had a good vibe. Great place to come with friends and split a bunch of things to share.

Yelp
Had an excellent dinner of fried calamari, baked clams, grilled branzino, lemon potatoes and greek salad. You choose your seafood at the counter and then order your sides at the table. Service was friendly and everything was reasonably priced. Will definitely go back. No alcohol, FYI.

Yelp
It was really great seating, had a great ambiance, but and service was great. The food was really fresh and it felt like eat at home. Really great restaurant and needs more hype

Yelp
Mateen and his team have created a great restaurant. Their approach--choose your fish, its preparation, and your sides--is simple but allows endless possibility. The staff is knowledgeable about their offerings, and you won't be disappointed. Presentation is simple but elegant; as Mateen said to me, "We want the fish to be fish." Prices are very fair. Don't skip the dessert of the day either!

Yelp
Walk up to the counter, pick your fresh fish, and they prepare it--similar to some other restaurants in the area, except this one is Algerian style. Interesting and tasty sides. We had the calamari and sardines, both were excellent. Very friendly service.
