Hmm! Now this is a tricky one, because I actually went to the Butlers Wharf Blackout Banquet, not really Le Pont De La Tour. The menu comprised a combination of dishes from all four restaurants along the riverside; Le Pont De La Tour, Blueprint Cafe, Cantina De la Pont and Butlers Wharf Chophouse.
Anyway, it was a very rainy weekend when we booked to go to the banquet. My friend and I were a bit wary about the night. We were quite relieved to see the banqueting table was set-up under a very sturdy marquee - phew!
Our marquee was set-up outside the Le Pont De La Tour. Seats were not reserved, it was a case of sit anywhere, which I think added to the fun - who knew who you could be sat next to and the place was a buzz with chatter. The table and surrounding area was candlelit, with a row of candles going down the centre of the table - beautiful and romantic. Everyone looks good in the soft yellow glow of a candles flame! At 8.30 the lights along the riverside went out too and Tower Bridge looked even prettier.
We were a little bit late (naughty), but were informed that they would have our starters brought to us shortly. The hostess noted I had requested the vegetarian menu and assured me I would be okay with the starter as it was vegetarian and the kitchen would be informed of my dietary requirements.
We got our "Swim Tonics" which were surprisingly delicious and refreshing. Only surprising for me because I'm not a fan of tonic water. I can't stand its tangy, bitter taste.
Then we found our seats and were served our starter. Dark lentils with tamarind sauce, pomegranate and celery. The lentils were delicious, the rest a bit meh! But the shocking disappointment was the distribution. My serving was about a dessert spoon sized portion of lentils, my friend's was four times that!
We got a bottle of house white from the bar, clean, fresh and very drinkable. But had a delay in getting a cooler as they had run out.
The main came and fortunately it was fish (yes, I'm one of those type of vegetarians), trout. It was perfectly cooked and very tasty served with a cauliflour flapjack. Very enjoyable, but it would have been better if they had served some side dishes too or at least given us the option of ordering some.
The dessert was a berry cheesecake with shortbread. But my friend made the mistake of being away from her seat when it was served. When she returned and asked for hers whe was told they had run out. She was served with what we were told was Le Pont De La Tour's signature dish, it's treacle tart. She wasn't impressed after one mouthful, so I helped her dispose of it! ;D I liked it, but I have to admit it was extremely orangy and not very treacly.
It was a great night but when they do it again next year I would advise you get there on time, don't leave your seat and, if you're a real vegetarian, make sure they give vegetarian dishes. It would be great and definitely impress if you're on a date and would probably be a nice experience with a small group of friends.
In relation to the actual restaurant, it looks like a lovely venue and I might go back sometime to see what it's like for food.
