Montreal’s Best Indian Restaurants | Eater Montreal

"One of Montreal’s few critically approved, white-tablecloth Indian restaurants, Le Taj has been a local institution since opening in 1985. Though its legendarily bountiful lunch buffets are temporarily off the table, it’s got an evening table d’hôte offering, including a choice of soup or salad, a meat dish, a veggie dish, and dessert, plus rice, naan, and coffee or tea. Otherwise, pick from their à la carte menu and approachable, seasonally curated wine list." - JP Karwacki

13 Restaurants Worth Trying in Downtown Montreal | Eater Montreal

"Open since 1985, this Northern Indian restaurant has become somewhat of a local institution, having survived close to four decades in the heart of downtown. (Le Taj also opened a counter in the Time Out Market in the summer of 2021.) The specialty here is undoubtedly the tandoori – the tandoori oven is visible from the dining room – but other dishes shouldn’t be ignored. One of the most charming features of the interior decor is the wall installation that was part of the Indian Pavilion of Expo 67. Note: the lunch buffet continues to be temporarily suspended until further notice." - Daniel Bromberg

The Best Lunch Options in Downtown Montreal | Eater Montreal

"Montreal’s upscale Indian mainstay is tucked away on rue Stanley, just off Sherbrooke. Le Taj’s weekday lunch buffets are ever-popular with the McGill community and surrounding office buildings. Fill up on endless amounts of butter chicken and chicken tikka masala, along with plenty of naan bread for sopping up sauces." - Ashley Joseph

Google
Le Taj offers a beautifully warm and elegant atmosphere, with vintage Indian décor that creates an inviting and authentic setting. Service was professional and attentive, and the ambiance alone sets a high expectation for the dining experience. We opted for the "feast" menu, which included a salad, appetizer, main with a vegetarian side, and dessert. The cucumber and tomato salad was refreshing, if a bit oversized. My fish appetizer was flat in flavor and oddly textured, though my partner’s papdi chaat was crisp, tangy, and truly excellent. For mains, the butter chicken had perfectly cooked meat, but the sauce lacked the depth, spice, and balance expected from such a signature dish. My partner’s lamb vindaloo, however, was a standout - bold, rich, spicy, and deeply satisfying. On the side, the paneer masala had a beautifully balanced tomato-based sauce, while the saag paneer was watery and underseasoned. The naan was exceptional, and the basmati rice decent, though a bit soft. Desserts were pleasant but unremarkable - gulab jamun was as expected, and a milk-based paneer dessert was unique but not particularly memorable. The low point of the evening was unquestionably the cocktails. At $20 each, both the mango mojito and mango martini were disappointing - overly sweet, poorly balanced, and lacking noticeable alcohol & technique. They tasted more like juice than proper cocktails, which felt out of step with the overall experience and definitely a disappointment. In summary, for the overall modest cost (about $120 per person), the experience was fair - beautiful ambiance, attentive service, and a few excellent dishes made it worthwhile. Still, based on its 4.2-star rating and reputation, we expected a bit more across the board. We've enjoyed more flavorful meals at lesser-known Indian restaurants, and with a few refinements - particularly in the cocktails and consistency of dishes - Le Taj could truly shine. While the restaurant itself merits a solid 4 stars, the cocktails were disappointing enough to bring the overall experience down a notch to 3 stars. Fix the cocktails.

Google
They call it Dall Soup and my expectation was this will not be that different from Dall but basically what I got was 95% water and a few pieces of dall! I heard a lot of good words about this place so my expectation was after i go to them they give me dall but they said this is what it’s supposed to be 😕 also no offer to refund …

Google
Great restaurant. Clean and tables are nicely spaced from others. The service is excellent and the food is flavourful. Unlike some restaurants, my clothes didn’t smell like food when we left. I recommend.

Google
Beautiful place to have a dinner with friends or family. Been here more times than I can count in the past. Food has always been delicious and the service is exceptional. The staff have been here for years and know their regulars. I would definitely get the feast and enjoy the leftovers the next day for lunch.

Google
Le Taj serves food that falls into the "mediocre" category—decent enough for those unfamiliar with authentic Indian flavors, but disappointing for anyone seeking a truly satisfying Indian dining experience. The dishes lack depth and authenticity, often tasting bland or overly adjusted to suit a non-Indian palate. The ambience is okay—nothing special in terms of aesthetics, but it’s functional and clean. The service is very good, with attentive and polite staff, which helps balance out the underwhelming food. Overall, it is an OK restaurant—fine if you’re not too particular about taste, but not a place I’d recommend for genuine Indian flavors. If you’re looking for something more authentic, you might want to explore other options.

Went there for my son's birthday dinner. The food was okay, nothing special, especially considering the price. The atmosphere was on point, and so was the service, but still felt it wasn't worth the buck.

My absolute favourite dining experience for fine Indian cuisine. Outstanding service and food! The perfect table was reserved for my business meeting with my client. The Butter Chicken is out of this world! I highly recommend Le Taj for any occasion. Lovely atmosphere, amazing cuisine and service. Don't forget to try the homemade Pistachio Ice Cream!!! Simply outstanding. I am always happy to continuously bring my real estate clients here before and after visits~! Candis Noble (candisnoble.ca)

Google
This was definitely a pleasant experience. Went with a group 8. Everything on the money is very good weather you ´re a beginner or expert level diner. Therefore I recommend the Feast, especially if you re in a group. You’ll get a triple entrée, a choice of 3 meat dished and de vegetarian ones ALL you can eat! Plus you get unlimited Naan bread ( plain, cheese and garlic) as well as saffron rice with peas or steamed basmati . There s even a dessert. For $65? Well worth it if you want to sample a bit of everything. Staff was friendly and polite. Would definitely recommend and go again, great experience.

Yelp
Nice indian restaurant in downtown, chicken Cari is delicious as well as nann bread. Decoration is nice, mood is relaxed, service is courteous and friendly. Bon restaurant indien, le poulet cari est délicieux ainsi que le pain nann. La décoration est belle, l'ambiance relaxe et le service est courtois et très bon.

Yelp
My friend and I had dinner at Le Taj a couple of nights ago and it was excellent. The food was delicious and the service was friendly and courteous. I had the dal soup and the lamb vindaloo and they were both very flavorful. I highly recommend Le Taj!

Yelp
We were staying at the Ritz which is a short walk from here. Fortunately, the concierge was able to call on a Sunday night and convince them to provide us with a very last minute table request. Not many places open on Sunday for dinner evidently in Montreal. Place was buzzing and we were quickly seated. Service was attentive despite the large party next to us. Samosas, chicken curry, salmon tandoor were all very good. Pleased that there was a coat rack near the bar as the dining room is tight. (noise levels are moderate though.) There is a review of the restaurant near the entrance touting one of their shrimp dishes so I will try that next time!

Yelp
A classic. Impeccable service and superb food. The ambiance is vintage. Definitely worth a visit.

Yelp
The staff is super tentative and observant assure your water will be filled and you catered during your meal. The food comes shortly after.. the meals are great portions based on your tolerance of spice you have it made for you. The scenery is ambiance for quiet meals for dates or a medium sized group. Space isn't too large.. drinks were good.. would consider after visit when in the area.

Yelp
I ordered via Uber eats to a hotel nearby. I got chicken biryani (hot). If you like spicy I would opt for the next level or spiciest option because I didn't taste any heat with (hot). The portion was decent and flavor was ok. For a relatively cheap, quick & easy meal it was ok.

Yelp
Unfortunately we tried Le Taj twice and both times were extremely disappointing. The quality of the meats is very poor. With the prices they charge, there are far better places for good Indian food. Service was also poor. Long wait time and they don't come check to see how you're doing. Ambiance is nice. The restaurant looks nice inside but unfortunately not worth the poor quality food.

Yelp
First meal in Montreal! It's a good thing that the night we decided to have Indian food was rainy and gross, so this restaurant provided a nice respite from the terrible weather. It was very charming and cozy and we loved the statues holding candles and the fact that they bring an extra little trolly to your table for all your dishes (smart). They could have bumped up the heat in there though. There's a full bar, but unfortunately the tonic one of us had on with her G&T was pretty flat. We started with the two soups: the dahl and mulligatawny. The former was bland and unimpressive, but we loved the latter, which was brimming with flavor and really hit the spot. For mains, we got the butter chicken and shrimp saag, along with some rice and garlic naan. A couple things that annoyed us: rice was not included for the hefty-ish price tag and the portions were really small. The butter chicken was basically dry meat in a bowl of pink cream: devoid of spice, moisture, and interest. We had to add the spicy carrots from the dip tray to have a meaningful eating experience. We loved the sauce in the saag, but the shrimp was rubbery and chewy and did not taste fresh. Naan was excellent. What sealed this place's fate for three stars was the dessert, however. We ordered the mango kufti and what came out was a pre sliced version that was hard as a rock and that you could tell had been sitting in the freezer for days if not weeks. Such a disappointment! While we appreciated the friendly service and nice atmosphere, we found the food to be lacking overall and wouldn't recommend this place in good faith, which is a bummer, because we wanted to love it. Three (generous) stars.

Yelp
Absolutely amazing food here, you won't be disappointed when you come here. We had a bit of everything and the butter chicken, the tandoori chicken, the lentil soup, all top notch. I am definitely coming back here with my friends and family. 5/5, great service, great cook.

Yelp
Le Taj is without a doubt the best Indian food we have ever had. This did require some considerable travel as Le Taj is located in Montreal, Quebec, Canada but I have to say it was definitely worth it. It is Montreal's oldest Indian restaurant, here for 40 years, and it shows. We arrived late on October 9th after battling some impressive traffic. We found Le Taj walking around near our hotel. The ambiance on Oct 9th around 10pm, on Canadian Thanksgiving no less, was classy and full of people. We were nonetheless seated right away. Onto the good stuff, the food stuff...for myself I ordered "The Feast", for $60 CAD, you receive: One appetizer, one soup or salad, naan bread, one meat dish, one vegetarian dish, basmati rice, one dessert, and coffee or tea. My wife ordered the chicken Tikka Masala. Soup was an austere lentil soup that was soft with an unexpected spice. Next up was the Samosa Chaat with a trio of sauces. It was a crunchy, flavorful delicacy made of chickpeas and many great spices. For meat dish I had the Tandoori Chicken which was a hearty, delicious and tender portion. Vegetarian dish was an extremely flavorful chickpea dish with some mango and spice. The naan bread was amazing, great for soaking up the remaining sauces. Dessert was a homemade ice cream, no added sugar, very pure, with the taste of freshly ground pistachio. The perfect end to this feast was a mint tea. This culinary experience and tour of India was worth every penny.

Yelp
Amazing!!!! I am a lover of Indian foods and all things rice-y , flavorful, and expertly herbed and spiced. Le Taj did all of these in spades. We were fortunate to find this place on Thanksgiving Night while visiting Montreal and from the moment we stepped in we were greeted by the subtle ambience of a quality establishment, in other words - take a look around and you just know you're in a for culinary experience. I tried the Chicken tikka masala with basmati rice. My husband ordered 'The Feast' with a soup , appetizer, meat, veg dish, dessert, and tea. All were phenomenal and we're still talking about it the next day. This place has been here 40 years and it shows. Definitely worth visiting.

Yelp
Some of the best Indian food I've ever had. The Chana masala was very flavorful and the vegetarian appetizer sampler included 3 delicious options.
google avatar

Todd B.

Yelp
Le Taj was a great meal for a chilly Montreal evening. As always, Indian cuisine is the perfect choice for a mixed dietary couple since the menus offer extensive vegetarian choices. This is going to be very unhelpful though since I don't remember, even after looking at the menu, what I had. I know I had a soup and a chicken entree (not a tandoori though). We also had garlic naan. So, I can't help you decide what to get, but what I can do is tell you that between my 2 dishes and my wife's vegetarian appetizer and entree, we both thoroughly enjoyed this meal. I also had a glass of one of their Amrit whiskeys and I have to say that the Indian whiskeys I've had have been a really pleasant surprise. The interior is very nicely decorated, modern but also with ethnic touches, and perfect for a date night or any special occasion. Service was okay. Wasn't necessarily bad but wasn't anything special. I dont know if we'd come back if we return to Montreal-there may be other Indian restaurants to try-but I wouldn't object.

Yelp
Very friendly staff. Happy crowd but not too noisy. Excellent menu and romantic place to take a date. Very popular and for good reason! Delicious appetizers and veggie nan. Wonderful veggie korma. Great draft beer. Easy walk from Omni.

Yelp
As a Guji, I have high standards when it comes to Indian restos and this was pretty good. We are visiting from the states and wanted to find a joint near the hotel on a Monday and this place was open and calling our name. For appetizers we ordered the pakora and chat papdi. The pakora was a larger fritter than I prefer and would have been nicer in smaller crispier pieces, but it was still flavorful. They also served the appetizers with a nice boat of tamarin, mango chutney, and raita which was a nice touch. For the main we got butter chicken, veggie korma, rice and garlic naan. I have had many butter chickens in my life (I know, not very guji of me) and this was a very solid state butter chicken. It was not as buttery as I am used to but it tased nice and fresh and seasoned well. The veggie korma was also very fresh- I am used to a greasy korma with lots of ghee but it was still tasty. The naan was to die for- clearly made fresh in back with lots of ghee. The service was 5/5. The waiter was attentive and friendly. They brought out a little table to extend our table so we could fit all of the food which was a nice touch. Also, the food came relatively fast which is a plus when you are craving some Indian deliciousness.

Rhonda G.

Yelp
We enjoyed a delicious dinner here last evening. We chose the samosas for an appetizer then followed with Chicken Tikka and Aloo Gobi. The sauce for the tikka was very fresh not heavy and the Aloo Gobi was delicious. The samosa were a little over cooked so weren't as good as others we have had. The tamarind sauce was fantastic however. The service was pleasant and relaxed. The ambiance is comfortable with the unique wall plaques they reference on their website. Definitely worth a visit if you enjoy Indian cuisine.
google avatar

Camille O.

Yelp
Excellent service and tasty food. I've eaten Indian in London (the best), and we eat Indian food at home in NY all the time. This place does it right. None of the chicken dishes were overcooked or dried out. The lamb curry was well seasoned, and I loved the Tamarind cocktail - sweet, sour, mildly spicy, and delicious.
google avatar

Reggie K.

Yelp
This was our first dining experience at Le Taj. Very good. The Bombay Shrimp Curry, Garlic Nan Bread, and Chi Tika Marsalis was excellent. The Tandoori Chicken was not served on a iron skillet and could have been warmer. Excellent service and you definitely should have a reservation.
google avatar

Valerie A.

Yelp
They won me over. The food, the service, and the warm atmosphere made our dinner very enjoyable. But let's get to the real prize: The Food. Each Indian restaurant has its own version of popular dishes, and what I loved about the food here, was that it's on the drier side. What I mean is, the masala was a spectacular blend of onion, tomato, and spices. No oil or cream that would make it "soup-y." Also, the spice was just right for someone who doesn't do well with very hot foods, but I imagine they can really kick up the heat for those that do. Okra (Bhindi Masala): 10/10 (No excess oil) Paneer Palak: 10/10 Naan: 10/10 So Fresh and Warm! Seekh Kabob: 10/10 (small pieces though) Chicken Tikka Masala (Not my favorite here but don't want to ding them because it's just a matter of recipe preference. No cream is used in their recipe and I love the cream in this dish in particular.) And lastly, if you like rasmalai, you will lick the bowl here. Definitely check this place out if you're in town!
google avatar

Mimi L.

Yelp
Authentic Indian cuisine full of flavor and spices. The chicken curry was delightful and so was the service. The ambiance is romantic for a dinner date.

Yelp
My wife and I stubbled upon this gem. We walked in without a reservation on a busy Friday night and they were able to find a table for us. We had no expectations as we had not researched this restaurant prior. We both ordered the Feast which provided a soup/salad, app, poultry dish, veggie dish, rice and naan (bread). We were FLOORED with our dinner - it was AMAZING! The food was fresh, cooked to perfection, with the perfect amount of spices and flavors to make an explosion in your mouth. The restaurant has been there for 40 years and the owner has not missed a day of work since he opened it. I highly recommend this restaurant!

Yelp
Great service, good food... what more could you ask for? First, I have to say the space is actually quite nice and different from other Indian restaurants I've had recently. Nice, high ceilings and a certain air about it. It's definitely more on the fine dining side. Staff is friendly and was helpful in making decisions on the menu. The food was generally pretty good. The chicken tikka masala had a grainier texture than i'm used to, but was still good. The naan was nice and fluffy (as it should be). Also had some biryani, the chana masala and a cocktail. Everything was pretty decent and I did take the leftovers so you know it was a good time! Note: This place is on the pricier side, so just keep that in mind! Overall a good choice for Indian food on a date night! Stay Cheerful ;)

Yelp
Definitely a good choice of an Indian restaurant in Montreal. The location of the restaurant is great. We were a large group of 12 and we made prior reservations, which is advised. The restaurant has a full bar with a good selection of wines. We ordered the sampler for appetizers along with some chaat items. Some of the guests were trying chaat for the first time and thoroughly enjoyed it. We also ordered a variety of dishes, biryanis and rotis / naan for the table. We also ordered a variety of desserts to share. Everything tasted good but I will not compare it the finest of Indian restaurants I have dined in. Service was a clear winner. The restaurant was jam packed but the crew was super efficient and kept track of all orders and served it on time. Ambience of the restaurant is upscale. The restaurant is quite popular and stayed busy thru the evening. Pricing : Moderate to High Will I return? : For sure!

Yelp
My husband and I visited Le Taj for the first time last week. Indian food is my very favourite cuisine, so I was really looking forward to this dinner. We were seated right away and given menus. The restaurant was quite full, but we were lucky to be seated despite the fact that we didn't have a reservation. We ordered garlic naan, lamb korma, saag paneer and plain rice. The food came quite quickly and everything was piping hot. We loved all of the flavours and the naan was to die for. We would have liked a little more heat in the food, but that's on us for ordering non-spicy dishes lol. We would definitely go back!

Lars H.

Yelp
Amazing food, great service, wonderful ambience. Le Taj is some of the best Indian food I've ever had and easily goes into my top 5. Everything from the naan to the curries was delicious. We ordered Poulet Xacutti, Poulet Korma and Murg Makhani as our main dishes alone with plain garlic and mint naan. The mint naan was especially tasty and not something I've seen before. Highly recommend for anyone looking for a tasty meal.

Yelp
This is our favorite restaurant in Montreal for excellent Indian food, stellar service, beautiful ambiance, and reasonable prices. Le Taj is truly one of the best spots in Montreal for a fine dinner that won't break the bank. A special shout out to Fayzul who provided impeccable service with a delightful sense of humor.
google avatar

Yelp
A very intimate yet casual dining experience. The staff was helpful with their recommendations and the food did not disappoint. Five stars without hesitation.
google avatar

Jay C.

Yelp
The place is very nicely decorated. The service is great, and the overall attention to detail in the service is stellar. However the food just wasn't amazing. The lamb chops were dry and lacked salt and flavor. The butter chicken and paneer tikka masala had virtually no cream and no butter. It was 90% tomato sauce. We actually ate at their food court location at Timeout at Eaton Centre and the butter chicken was rich and creamy. The salty lassi was great and the desserts were amazing.
google avatar

Yelp
We were craving desi Indian food and happy that this was located close to the Omni Hotel in Montreal downtown area. We called and ordered the food and the experience was fast and nice. The order was made quickly in 25 minutes and they called back to let me know. The food was well packaged to go and was warm when we opened in the hotel room. We got the butter chicken and dal tadka. They were both decent, though far from the best we have had. Next time we will try some other dishes as well.

Kate H.

Yelp
Excellent service and very delicious food Great location Would definitely return Love the welcoming atmosphere too

Yelp
This place is AMAZING! We got the Chicken Tikka Masala, Onion Naan, Tandoori Chicken, Dal Tarka, and Baigan Bartha (my personal fav!). We thought the onion naan and chicken tikka were so good, we actually ended up ordering one more of each! Highly highly recommend this place and definitely try some of the dishes we got.
google avatar

Alyson E.

Yelp
Very good food! All came out piping hot and with a lot of great flavor. The onion naan was amazing and the chicken tikka masala was so flavorful. The Dahl and Baigan were also very good and filling. Tandoori chicken was well cooked and tender! Would definitely come back here and everyone is very friendly too.
google avatar

Jocelyn R.

Yelp
We both ordered The Feast (which came with way more food than either us should have been eating) and loved everything we had - the naan here is particularly great, and I am a sucker for a great butter chicken where the chicken is fork tender and a spicy-enough dahl soup. Service was decent, prices were appropriate, and this was an easy walk from our hotel. Definitely a good experience!

Yelp
So, my wife and I took off to Montreal for a few days. Stayed at the Hotel Le Cantlie Suites in Downtown Montreal (great place but that's another review). We got in on Thursday at 7:30 and found Le Taj was right around the corner. Unfortunately, even on a Thursday, that was no room for the 2 of us until 9 PM. Being hungry and not wanting to wait an hour, we decided the next night to make a reservation. It was so good. We come from a section of NJ where we have a ton of Indian restaurants to choose from and this place was as good as any of them. You could actually taste the butter in the butter chicken. The naan was fresh and delicious. The aloo gobi was good but we have had better. We started with a sampler plate of veggie appetizers and the onion bhaji was the stand-out. The interior was nice and traditional. The wait staff was exceptional. Even the water was refreshing. We had no room for dessert. Just go there if you are in town. You will not be disappointed.
google avatar

Bernard N.

Yelp
When we are back to single-digit temperatures, nothing is better than a spicy dish, but not any. I'm talking about a nice dish from Le Taj, such as a biriyani chicken or lamb, with out without some naan. It's fragrant, with some cardamom, cilantro and much more. If you don't want to go to the restaurant downtown Montreal, the Time Out market offers an excellent alternative. All the selection of restaurants at Time Out Market do need our support more than ever.
google avatar

Wes L.

Yelp
Le Taj, I want to marry you and take you home with me. In all seriousness, can you open up a shop in DFW? I love this spot. I come here every time I'm in Montreal and I can never get enough. Best, most authentic tasting Indian food there is. Only India would have more authentic food and there is no guarantee it would be this delicious. Garlic naan and chicken Tikka masala are my go to at this place. You'll find them attached to this review. You can't go wrong with any option here. Go ahead, bust out the visa and get full. You won't regret it.

Bhishma D.

Yelp
Had lunch 2 days in a row. Authentic Indian taste. Both Saag Paneer and Chana Masala were delicious. Awesome garlic Naan. Highly recommend.

Yelp
Pretty great Indian food! It's "Upscale Indian food" so the price point reflects that, but the service and the taste is quite on point. I've been a few times and ordered the table d'hôte every time; $45 (includes soup or salad, an appetizer, an Amin dish (meat, poultry or seafood), a veggie dish and a dessert as well as a nan bread, basmati rice and tea/coffee. It's a lot of food. If you are a group of 2, I would suggest maybe ordering only one order of table d'hôte (or they call it the "Feast/Festin") and add a few additional a la carte dishes. Their nan bread is to die for and I especially enjoyed the butter chicken and the lamb vindaloo. The dessert is good, but personally not my favourite. I've only been there for dinner but they do a buffet for lunch also that I've been meaning to come back to try. Value/price: 3.5/5 Food/quality: 4.5/5 Service: 5/5 Atmosphere: 4.5/5 Overall: 4/5

Yelp
A fancy Indian restaurant that satisfies your cravings. We ordered take out (malai chicken kebob, grilled shrimp, saag lamb and butter chicken). Other than the saag lamb which was delicious all the other dishes were passable. The shrimp appetizer was just 2 shrimp with a lot of minced garlic on top and the kebob was ok. This place gets packed but hasn't found it's spot yet as either a fusion Indian or as an authentic Indian place.
google avatar

David Z.

Yelp
Good, standard Indian fare. A little pricey, but definitely not unacceptably so.
google avatar

Geneviève F.

Yelp
Got it via delivery twice. Tried: - Saag Paneer - Vegetable Korma - Butter Chicken (the two different types) - Naan Bread and rice Everything was quite good. The only thing I didn't like was the non-indian-style butter chicken, which was VERY weird. The color, texture and taste was strange. Not bad, but I didn't love it. The indian-style butter chicken was more what I expected and was good. It's not amazing or revolutionary indian cuisine, but it is good quality and tasty. I'll alternate ordering between this place and another one I found that is the same level. Still looking for a 'wow' indian restaurant in Montreal however

Yelp
Low five stars. Located in an upscale part of town. Very nice interior designs, decor and ambiance. Indian fine dining experience. Had the daal tadka and chana masala. Daal was very good and not too oily. Chana masala was quite dark and didn't have that light brown cream color you would normally see. Maybe chef overdid it with the garam masala proportions. Rice not included and costs extra. Chose plain naan instead and it was good. No complimentary papadum. Ended the meal with khir which was very good, not too sweet, yellow in color with fruit pieces and flavors of rose water and cardamom. All the bowls and jugs are in the nice copper style and they even have the bowls for sale.

Yelp
Le Taj was recommended to us by some friends that lives in Montreal, so of course, we HAD to try it! We were staying at Loews hotel, which was only a 5 minute walk to the restaurant. When we got there at 4:55pm, there were other people already there, waiting for the doors to open at 5:00pm. When it opened, the host asked if we had reservations, and then seated us. Upon walking in, I noticed how beautiful the decor was in the restaurant. We ordered mango lassi, lamb vindaloo, a shrimp entree, samosa, naan bread, papadome and safron rice. Oh and dessert, which I believe it was called kulfi. One thing to note is that your entrees do not come with anything so we had to order everything separately. For example, neither rice or naan accompanied our entrees so we had to order them separately, which was very different/new to me. Overall, everything was VERY GOOD. We'd give it 4 out of 5 for taste, and 5 out of 5 for the beautiful ambiance and experience.

Yelp
Disgusting chat papri, hardly any yogurt, spice level, too spicy. Very basic, and too expensive .

Yelp
Went here for the lunch buffet with a few colleagues and was not disappointed. The line ups were huge because it was peak lunch time, but the food was pretty good. They have a nice spread with a good variety of vegetarian and non vegetarian food. For me, the star of the meal was the salmon tikka. It was juicy and nicely done. Ok, I understand where they are coming from and why they do it, but this pisses me off more than it should - daal isn't had like a soup. I also wish they had a paneer dish. (These two things made me put this 3.5 * place, imo, as a 3 instead of a 4 - I know, so ruthless lol)

Yelp
Being an Indian cuisine fan I just had to try out this restaurant in Montreal. We came in on Friday evening when the restaurant was busy but there were still lots of nice tables available in the area next to the windows (really nice, fancy looking area). However, we were brought all the way further into the corner next to the wall, far away from windows. The hostess did not seem to be very friendly. We were in such a rush so we did not mind, and I thought that those tables must be reserved. Only later a couple next to us expressed dislike to the table and asked for a window area, the hostess was not happy but said "Jeez, no problem!" Having sensitivity to dairy I asked the waiter if they can make some dishes without it (all the other restaurants would say "yes"), but they told me that all dishes contain cream and can't be served without it. I asked if even Saag Paneer can't be made without it, and they explained that the sauce is already pre-made (really!?). Most places I asked this question they have no problem as they cook things and can adjust the recipe! They only offered one dish without dairy that I was not interested in. We ordered Saag Paneer, Chicken Tikka and onion naan. To our surprise the food arrived in less than 5 minutes! Seemed like they did not cook anything fresh, as even the naan was a bit cold, not crunchy, seemed like just heated up. - Saag Paneer was very watery but okay (3/5) - Chicken Tikka was extremely oily! I can't express enough how I dislike food where the oil (or butter) is swimming all around and on top, it's like you have to pure it out which I tried. Then I tried to mix in the rest of the oil in the sauce but it kept separating. Gross. The sauce was so plain, missing any tomatoes or bell pepper. Looked like Butter Chicken (2/5). So the bottom line is that our chosen dishes were pre-made, and either too oily or too watery. Definitely not a place where I would return.

Yelp
Over priced, Basic, Indian food. Service was excellent. The food had to much turmeric and Curry, it was overwhelming, however it was not that spicy. The cost was outrageous for the amount of food you got. The bar tender was very good, drinks were mixed very well, and were quick. The Nan was good, however not what I am accustomed to and appeared to be designed to force you to buy three or four baskets for a table. The best dish of the evening was the Spinach, sautéed and added chunks of cheese. The atmosphere was nice, however it was a little crowded for only having about 30 people in the place.

Yelp
I went two nights in a row. Food was above average to great compared to Indian food I've had in other major cities, including London and NYC. Not the best ever but pretty solid, enough for four stars even if the place was priced significantly higher. However, at his price point, which is barely above what you'd pay at decent Indian takeout places, possibly lower if you get le Taj's feast, it's worth five stars. The feast is a $40 CAD that gets you a soup or salad, an appetizer, a vegetable entree, a meat entree, a big bowl of rice, a big naan, and a desert. In other words, it's a lot of food. I suggest coming with two people and ordering one feast and then an appetizer and/or an entree to round out the meal for two. I am a big eater and I found the feast a little too much to handle by myself but the feast is such a good value it's not worth ordering a la carte off the menu. Of course getting even more people is even better. Beef vindaloo is highlight for me. It's not special or best ever, but it's spicy and the beef is properly tender. If you aren't into he vindaloo taste you will probably find it too spicy and may be turned off by the visible hot oil. The Dahl soup is basically lentil soup with spices and a pinch more salt than usual. My wife found it a little salty but I thought it was fine. Chicken malai kebab was a triumph of the tandoor chef. He meat was so tender my wife and I cute through it with our forks. It tasted pretty good if on the light side. I ended up dipping it in sauces of other dishes hat we ordered. Seeks kebab was pleasant enough but I couldn't really taste the meat. It reminded me of alligator sausages and really spiced but delicious street meats all over the world where he star is the spices and the meat just carries the spices. Dal makhini was kind of bland, but that could be the Dahl soup already numbed my tongue a little and I followed the dal makhini with beef vindaloo. Tava fish was perfectly cooked and he spices didn't overwhelm the fish as I thought it would. Still, probably better to stick with chicken/beef/lamb which stands up to Indian spices better. Mixed vegetables curry was actually surprisingly good. It's a bit light for my taste but I still found it delicious. My wife and I both used it as sauce to change up the Tava fish and chicken and found the combination to work well. The naan was just about dead average and a little inconsistent even for the two nights I visited. First night it was pretty much dead average on every dimension. Second night it was thicker than usual and less oily than usual. Still, good enough for me to eat with the beef vindaloo so no complaints for me. Mango ice cream as dessert was very good. The mango ice cream itself was closer to a sorbet and I think was homemade. It wasn't the best mango ice cream, probably not even above average, but it's the perfect dessert after a heavy meal to cleanse the palette. Decor is really good for the price range in the area. It would be above average even in Manhattan or London compared to places charging 20-30% more. Service was fast. Food was obviously precooked, enabling the fast service. Don't be turned off by this. Remember most of the stuff on the menu takes forever to cook. This isn't a place to order and then chat for hours over wine. TLDR: not the best Indian restaurant I've been to. For international traveler, it's not good enough to make a special visit unless you are craving Indian food (like I was). It is however a solid option if you want good Indian food at reasonable prices.

Yelp
I had some of the best Indian food and the best service I've ever had at an Indian restaurant here. It's also more expensive than I typically pay for Indian food, but it's worth every penny. I typically get The Feast, where you get: *a soup or salad (I like their green salad because it comes with nuts, cheese, and mango dressing) *an appetizer (I love their samosas, but I want to try their chicken kabob next time) *a meat curry (I love their chicken korma, didn't love their chicken tikka masala, planning on trying their butter chicken, chicken jal-farezi, and chicken xacutti) *a vegetarian curry (I ADORE their baigan bhartha, which is their eggplant curry - one of my all-time favourite curries ever!!!) *naan *rice *tea *dessert (their classic cardamom & pistachio kulfi is amazing - I'd never had kulfi before and was delighted by how incredibly rich and creamy it was) You can get a thali for cheaper and get to try a bunch of dishes, but I'm not a fan of daal tarka or raita, so I always opt for the Feast combo. Whenever I go, I have to make sure that I stay super hungry all day and even then, I am always super stuffed at the end of the meal and can never finish all the food - and I can out-east most men I know. It's a ton of (very delicious) food. It's one of my Montreal staples and I will always return. Next time, I'm thinking of trying their chicken biryani.
