Great wine, great atmosphere, and nice staff!
That’s why Verre Vole even has any stars in my review.
The food, from beginning to end, was 1/5 stars. It was really not good..
Starters:
Snail croquettes;
This was way too salty. I love salt, but this was not nice.
Truffle omelette with gravy;
first of all, we didn’t get any truffle taste, not even 0.0001%
Secondly, the gravy was very thin, and bland.
Third, it had a sand-like, bread crumble on top so the whole textural experience was soft and sandy, with nothing to challenge that.
Bouillabaisse;
talking about texture, this was 0/5 - this “bouillabaisse” was fully blended, with some aioli in the middle. Why blend it though??
It was a grainy, sandy, strong shellfish bisque.
Overall starters: 1/5 ⭐️
Main dishes:
Seabass, with potato, celeriac, Topinambour puré, spinach, sauce, whole spring onions, and cilantro. If that sounds like a lot of different tastes on one plate, I can tell you it was!
The fish, puré, spinach and sauce was actually really good. So if that was just the dish, it would be 4/5 ⭐️ but with everything else, it was just bad. What is cilantro doing on this dish?
And.. are you ready?: the potatoes were cold? So it was hot fish, hot mash, and hot sauce, and then really cold potatoes mixed in. Really weird feeling in the mouth. Why??
Pork chop with cockles, whole carrots, leeks, nduja breadcrumbs, and a non definable green water “sauce”.
First of all, it was spring onions, not leeks. and the nduja breadcrumbs was missing all together….. secondly the green water had very little taste, maybe a hint of some herb, but not enough to identify which, and it was so watery it didn’t stick to anything on the plate.
Third, I have no idea what the chef intended with this dish. Like, do I take a bite of meat with cockles, and then a new bite of bland carrot, and then a new bite of whole spring onion.?
Mains 1/5 ⭐️
(Fish could have been good)
I wrote this review because I want Verre Vole to read it, and realize they have to do better, with the potential they’ve got. And the price they charge.
This experience felt like a tv sketch, or like the Vice documentary where this dude opens a restaurant and serves microwave food but it becomes #1 on TripAdvisor.
If Verre Vole wonders why we didn’t say anything; the waiter did ask “was it good”, but it wasn’t really a question with room for an answer, it was more just a comment while picking up the plates. We didn’t feel like there was a space to say this while we were there.
(The (bad) picture is of the 2 main dishes. )
