The 38 Essential Amsterdam Restaurants

"This tiny Turkish kebab shop is a favorite of chefs and locals, prized for its fully loaded veal, chicken, and mixed doner sandwiches served in house-baked pita. The shop also offers kapsalon (literally “hairdresser”), a delicious Dutch creation of fries piled high with layers of kebab and cheese, then finished under the grill and topped with lettuce, garlic, and spicy sambal sauce. Only ambitious eaters should attempt to consume it all." - Monique van Loon

Google
Leeman Döner is the gold standard of kebabs and Döner in Amsterdam as far as I’m concerned. I say this with the authority of a man who prides himself on finding amazing Döner all across Western Europe. Side note: I also lived in Turkey for a year and a half and ate my own body weight in kebab every month. Leeman has not just one tower of rotating meats, but three towers of glorious golden fire-kissed meats to choose from. They also bake their own flat breads to use as the outer wrapping of the aforementioned Döners. I also got a small order of frites which were cooked to order and served hot and fresh in their own bag. One could make a meal of just the frites if one chose to. They are doing great things at Leeman and it’s in your best interest to stop by and check it out for yourself. Amazing and fast customer service, world class fresh ingredients, and an eager to please family run establishment that is worthy of your business.

Google
Best döner in Netherlands. I ate Kapsalon and drank Coke paid 11.60 for them. The place is always busy so you probably cannot dine inside.

Google
I’ve been coming to Leeman on every trip to Amsterdam and it does feel like half the reason I am in Europe. Amazing staff, fresh food. If they make another run of stickers make sure to pick one up.

Google
Good Turkish/German döner. Haven’t seen any other reviews mentioning it, so the place is fully halal. Sauces are recommended. You should order at the back of the shop. I thought they take orders from the left that made me wait for almost 10 minutes for someone to take my order. €6 pita chicken döner.

Google
Nice food, got my kapsalon beef for 7,5€ (small size). but enough for me and my hubby because its sooo big 😂 for the big portion they sell it at 10€. Same price for chicken and beef, so I chose beef. The service were very fast~ love it!!!!

Jin Kang

Google
Incredibly affordable, perfect portion (even for those who eat a lot), and incredibly delicious. I would highly recommend, especially if you’re on the go!

Kaylee Johnson

Google
Absolutely delicious. Great quality food at large quantities. A lot for what you pay. I will say service was slow, long lines and waiting times, but well worth the wait.

Nagia K

Google
I don’t know what happened to them. Everything was great. The service the people the meat everything. But the flat bread was not cooked. I think they weren’t paying enough attention while making it. I could taste and smell the dough.

Yelp
Wonderfully quick and tasty. Packed full of chicken. I would have loved a pickled thing to add, but it was still very good. The fresh made bread was extraordinary.

Yelp
Looking for fresh, tasty, quick food that is healthier than your average fast food joint? Leeman doner makes tasty doners/wraps/kap salons using fresh ingredients and fresh made breads. The menu is very straight forward - pick your type (doner/wrap/plate), pick your meat and pick your toppings and sauce. I really enjoyed the gyro meat and the chicken was also very tasty. The fries were regular fries so not too special. They also carry a Turkish spinach pastry that is amazing.

Yelp
Yummmyyy. Get the kebab! You will not regret it. €3.50 euros? Yes please. Cash only though. I ordered the mixed kebob with all of the toppings. Each order is made to order. They cut the meats right in front of you and onto the pita. It is a small place so I ordered my kebob to go. I took my first bite and couldn't stop eating. The meats were tender and the pita was soft and airy. My only regret is that I couldn't come here again!

Yelp
Now I know I really have no right comparing a doner kebap place in one country to a place in another, but: move over Mustafa's Gemüse Kebap of Berlin, I have a new fantasy doner kebab place right here in Amsterdam. What's amazing about this place? They make their OWN BREADS, in some cases ON DEMAND. This includes the doner bread, lahmacun bread, and the thin durum bread. Oh yeah, THEY MAKE wraps using lahmacun. This is like a burrito place saying, hey, I hear you want a burrito, let me smear ground meat all over the tortilla before making the burrito. Yeah. That's the stuff. (Normally, lahmacun will be served flat, with herbs and sauces on it, and you eat it with a fork and knife. Here it's the foil for your chicken or lamb meat and other typical durum fillings. The chicken (i never say this) is the best meat that they have. It is juicy, flavorful and tender. The place is extremely crowded from 12 to 2pm attracting all the right types who know where to find a high flavor, good value lunch: construction workers, teachers, students, etc. To me it's a mark of success. They deal with their crowd very well. If you are still hungry after that they have baklava. But I have not tried it due to using up all my space on lahmacun bliss. Please open a durum doner place in NYC~~

Yelp
This review is for all you Turkish pizza first-timers. It was quite good! Only downside was I had to use a lot of white sauce and hot sauce on each bite as the meat lacked any kick of flavor. Would actually give them 3.5 as the other ingredients were fresh and the bread was quality. Expect a line but service is generally speedy. Restaurant is very small so eat here expecting to take out in case there isn't a free bar stool.

Yelp
I started off with high hopes. Rave reviews on google, yelp and from everyone you ask, set the bar to quite the level. Living so near the place, I've been able to experiment with a few LD specialties to arrive at a concluding 4 star rating. The bread is made fresh, which can't be said for many Döner kebabs. Come early or at peak times and this bread is straight from the oven fresh and you'll note it. The pillowy texture is hard to miss and sets theirs apart. Think English muffin in the shape of pita. When it comes to fillings, I've found the winning order. Kip (chicken) beats the other (beef) by a long shot, but I've always preferred the cluck to the moo so the bias may be mine. On top of it all, you want garlic sauce, onion and lettuce. There is some chili spicy sauce, but don't do that. Without it, flavor abounds. With it, your mouth and watery eyes will scream at you for masking the taste of your Döner with this type of heat. Quick note: LD is well loved, yet it retains it's fast, cheap af, no waiting longer than 5mins vibe. I wish they were open later than 11pm for that drunken kebab life, although I can still show up as the first customer the next morning (the craving will not just go away) or stop by for a lazy bite post-work. For that, you're forgiven.

Yelp
Very good, solid doner kebab! The line might be out the door but I guarantee it'll go fast! Cheap, delicious lunch. I recommend the turkish bread or turkish pizza. The only reason I didn't give it a 5 star is because it does not beat my best doner kebab experience to date, which is in Berlin!

Yelp
Ohmylord! I don't know what took me so long to make it here but I am so glad I finally finally did. This little doner shop is about 3 skips from my place but for years (and I can say that now after being here for 3), I avoided it. Well colour me silly and throw me another kebab! I just nailed their mixed doner in about 2 minutes and it was amazing! I had to do it take-away but even after I unwrapped this little bit of ambrosia, it was still hot, the bread was still crisp and the flavours absolutely perfect. Next time, and there'll be one ASAP, I'll eat in and add more sauce and just absorb the aromas insitu! Oh and if it's not enough to have a kebab, get a delicious crispy baklava for a mere 50 cents to satisfy your inner foodie monster! Banging meal for less than €3.50! Nice one Amsterdam!

Yelp
Handsdown my favorite kebab in the city, if not the country. Fresh baked breads, spicy sauces and friendly staff. The wait is well worth it

Yelp
We saw this place after meandering through the market. First, it is sooooo cheap. Second, it is soooooooo good (get the spicy garlic for the Döner kebab wrap). One sandwich was €3.50 - now that I'm writing this out I think he gave us the water bottle for free... We shared it and afterward regretted not getting our own.

Yelp
We were so hungry after walking all day and I searched some doner places near the Van Gogh museum & this one came up with great reviews. We were literally so hungry I forgot to take pix it was so so delicious! We scarfed down the doners and my hubs with still hungry so we got a order of the Turkish pizza with lettuce and onions.. That was delicious too :) They had hot sauce and white sauce on the counter so each person could add as much as they please according to their taste. There are many many options when it comes to doner places, I'm sure they're all delicious in their own way according to their toppings, flavors and sauces used. This place is definitely worth a try if your in the area - or not :) and they all speak perfect English which helps a top! Enjoy!!! Oh and they make their own bread!!

Heather G.

Yelp
Döner kebap is probably my favorite thing to eat and sadly the thing I eat the least because I am American and it's really not a thing in the states. I've been all over Germany and to be completely honest, this Döner can hold its own. The main reason being their bread. Ohhhh man that bread. They make it fresh in house and you can definitely taste the quality and love in the bake. The chicken on its own isn't very flavorful, and the lack of cucumber makes me shed a little tear, but other than that, this place is the bees knees. It's also fantastic that the sauce is on the table and you can sauce up to your heart's content. One thing to mention is the place is super tiny. Maybe 8 seats inside and 4 outside. It gets super claustrophobic, but I just keep my head down, focus on my food, and enjoy. If you like döner kebap, you'll enjoy this place. Oh it's also cheap af, which is nice.

Yelp
I used to go to this place almost everyday when I lived in this neighborhood in 08-09. It's possibly the best halal Broodjes in the city.

Jeff S.

Yelp
This is one of the best donner shops outside of Turkey where donner is a bit different. Their Turkish pizza is also great. Incredible food at an incredible price.

Yelp
Best durum bread ever! This done place is ranking high in my books. Whenever I am in Amsterdam it is a must go place and it is really worth to get the tram for 20 minutes from the central station. Plus you get to see a new area of town that really worth the trek. 2.50€ the sandwich.. enough said
google avatar

Alexia G.

Yelp
Had a great meal and opportunity to rest from a long walk on the cobble stone streets of Amsterdam. Great neighborhood atmosphere with locals.
google avatar

Johanna S.

Yelp
To be honest, the line outside already indicates the quality of the foodd inside. Ideal if you like quality fast food at affordable price. Some famous Dutch food reviewers even visit this place. . Doner is a family run business. Doners include meat. I personally like the wrap with doner-chicken, but I can see that other doners are even more popular. Tip: 1. When you enter the place, walk towards the back and make your choice at the teller, pay and then wait for someone calling out your number. 2. Waitng times are not too long and ideal to observe the diversity of visitors

Yelp
Happened to be staying a block away and was thrilled to find this local shop on Eater's coveted "38 Essential Restaurants" list for Amsterdam. They were right! Great spot. I don't do the hot sauce usually so can't comment on that but the kip (chicken) doner is good stuff, really good stuff. Only downside is they close way earlier than my standard kebab-eating time but still is quite worth the early meal. EAT HERE!
google avatar

Tobbe L.

Yelp
Standard, pretty boring, donner kebab. I'm used to get more toppings than what I got here. They just put meat, iceberg lettuce, raw union and sauce on it. In Sweden we usually also get tomato, cucumber and pepperoncini in the donner wrap. I got the chicken meat, and it tasted really good. Great seasoning! The sauces (both the garlic+herbs and the chili varieties) were also very good :) And you can't complain about the price. €5 for the donner, a soda and a baklava for dessert.
google avatar

Mikko H.

Yelp
Have eaten kebabs all over the world, this one is definately worth visiting. They bake their own bread and the meat seems authentic as well. Would definately recommend this one for all kebab lovers.
google avatar

Ann D.

Yelp
This place is throwing distance from my house and the smell of the meat is impressive but not quite as impressive as the ever present queue out the door for these kebabs. The staff are friendly, pleasant and well organised so despite the queue, you do not normally have to wait long to be served and there is a number system so you know when your turn is. The ordering system has been handily broken down at the till at the back where you pay so you can use the photos to explain what you want (handy for language barriers or the incredibly drunk as this is a kebab shop!) The doners start from €2.50 for a lamb or chicken kebab in pita or up to €4 for a kebab in a Turkish pizza or a meat and chips choice. I went back to try the chicken after being impressed with the doner. Both were awesome but the chicken was my favourite. Will definitely be going again!
google avatar

Kimberly Y.

Yelp
Inexpensive and fresh. Basic. Tasty and juicy. Few sauces to add-garlic and chili. Chicken beef kip falafel.
google avatar

Kim V.

Yelp
This is as good as it gets! Best doner in Amsterdam! And only a 4 minute walk from my home! Yes, I'm lucky! In the evening this place gets crowded with many customers waiting for their sandwich or Turkish style pizzas. So prepare for the fact that you may have to wait a while, but when nothing goes wrong, not to long. Sometimes it gets so busy little mistakes are made, but just watch everything closely and it will be all right. If you see the many costumers you can't really blame the staff for any small mistakes. My opinion: This place is amazing; great food + inexpensive! Can't get any better right? Also try the baklava!
google avatar

David H.

Yelp
This place is widely known as the best place for döner in Amsterdam. While this is not untrue, it does tell you a little about what's on offer in our fair city. If you are a fan of the real döner from Berlin, you may notice the following deficiencies: too much meat, too little salad/tomato. The hot sauce is Indonesian sambal which is way hotter than the hot sauce needs to be. There's no herb sauce available. The bread is just too much. Expect to end up with a bunch of greasy meat at the bottom of your roll... If only some of these guys would head to Berlin for a few days to learn how to do it properly.
google avatar

Kamael S.

Yelp
This is a really solid doner. Chicken and Beef available. I've had both and prefer the beef. Pita or turkish pizza options. I prefer the turkish pizza (it's huge). It's around €4.50, so you really can't go wrong with the price and speed of which you can grab a quick bite. The sweets are good as well. The menu is limited

Steph L.

Yelp
Good cheap eats. That's what I love. They've raised their prices to €3.50, and their small kapsalon shrunk a little bit, but it's still so worth it. Service is super fast, considering their long lines that go out the door and the everything on the menu is super fresh. Side note: They charge an extra fee of 10 cents if you use your PIN card.
google avatar

Chris C.

Yelp
Living nearby I previously favored the Doner City just nearby over this, but since the later went out of business I've switched over to Leeman. It has a reputation as some of the best in the city, and it's pretty good, but my mind wasn't blown. I suppose my mind was only blown the first few times I tried turkish pizza or kebab and nothing has since made me think it's any better or worse than any previous kebab I've had. I don't think it's anything special to go out of your way for, but if you're in the area, Leeman Doner makes for a great place to grab a kebab. The bread is fresh and service is quick!
google avatar

Felipe C.

Yelp
Best kebab in Amsterdam. They have chicken and beef... No lamb. But again... Amazing! You have different sizes "pizza size" or the normal size. WIth fries inside and the different topins (all included). The breads and everything is made in there. Delightful!
google avatar

Denise G.

Yelp
After walking past this place over & over again, witnessing the consistent long line, I had to check it out. Great cheap eats! The chicken wrap lives up to its reputation. Wrap made fresh, right while you wait. Have stopped back in there several times since my first visit & will continue to go back. Yum!
google avatar

Marco L.

Yelp
Yup. This is the spot. No question. Fresh baked bread for you kabab and just fucking delicious!
google avatar

Nat K.

Yelp
Best kebab and and turkish pizza in Amsterdam! Great quick service, always respectful and polite. Awesome prices for such great quality of food and service. I definitely recommend this place :-) Perfection :-)
google avatar

David S.

Yelp
Head and shoulders above other doner shops. The bread is made fresh there and the workers seem extra concerned with hygiene. Taste is great.

Brooke N.

Yelp
Best Döner I've ever had!! Highly recommend. I swing by every time I'm in Amsterdam. I've always gotten the chicken. Sauces are great
google avatar

Billy D.

Yelp
Need a donor, just come right this way. It's worth biking the few extra km (unless it's winter, then I get it). It's really that good. They make their own bread here and you can just feel the quality and pride in their food when you walk in. It's not just another donor. Plus it's cheap.

Bartek K.

Yelp
Very nice atmosphere and quick order. I like everything from there, good price, customer service is on level 3 stars. Hope see it in the near future :)

Amit Y.

Yelp
Crazy about doner kebab and like to taste a real one not in Turkey. Well, simply come to amsterdam, stay on the line here and simply order a doner. I prefer their bread with everything in. Fresh, warm, friendly served and so tasty. It's a shame to miss this one.
google avatar

Qian J.

Yelp
Omg this is the best doner kebab I have ever had and I have had a lot of doner kebab in a lot of places. Hands down, no doubt this is the best kebab not only in this neighborhood but also the entire Holland. You must try it people. For €2.5 you get a huge broodjes packed with meat( chicken or beef) . Sometimes I also like to order the roll( dorum doner kebab) it is huge, and it's only €3. They made their own fresh bread I their bakery and they are so good at it. Just the bread itself is delish!!!! They also make some traditional Turkish sweets, but I'm have not tried, they look very nice though.
google avatar

N A.

Yelp
Busy, busy. Great bakery that uses their own bread for doner. Menu is small-ish but they have all the items one would expect at a doner place including a solid burek. Good spot that stays busy throughout the day.
google avatar

Alexander K.

Yelp
€2.50 for a delicious döner Kebab. Do I need to say anything else... Quick service and they have containers of the sauces so you can adjust the taste of your kebab.

Will J.

Yelp
Simply the best turkish pizza with donor i've had in Amsterdam. I lived there for around 15 years so i've tried a lot of them! It had the perfect balance of crispy crust while moist and tender inside, and you could tell they were freshly made. There was a lineup but the wait wasn't long as the staff quickly prepared each order, with smiles. Very friendly and pleasant staff! I ran across it on my recent trip back to the dam, its right down the street from my old apartment. Couldn't believe i never went there before... but i'll be back

Haseeb A.

Yelp
Honestly, this place is so overrated. I think only tourists of non Amsterdam locals like this place. Don't get me wrong, their kebab is not bad or anything and the fresh bread is really good. However, the meat is not that special and it their doner tends to be greasy. Nontheless, if you are around its not a bad choice.

Ray B.

Yelp
Super lekker Broodje Döner Leeman Special! Fast, hot and delicious.

Amanda L.

Yelp
like everyone else has said, it's simply the best doner you can get. they have always been friendly to me, a non-dutch speaker, too so that is a plus.
