Michael Schlow’s Doretta Taverna Closes in Boston - Eater Boston

"Doretta Taverna and Raw Bar was a Greek restaurant opened by Michael Schlow in September 2015. It operated in the same space where Via Matta, another restaurant by Schlow, was located for 13 years. The restaurant closed on May 29 after nearly three years of operation. Despite some early middling reviews, the restaurant's reputation improved significantly under the guidance of chef Brendan Pelley, who joined as chef de cuisine toward the end of 2016." - Dana Hatic

Excellent food and beautiful place. Has a full bar and an amazing menu full of great eats. Went for lunch with some friends on a Sunday. I had the lobster roll and my friends had the crab salad roll and both plates came with fries, coleslaw, and New England clam chowder. Everything was delicious. The only thing that was not the best was the service. Our server never came to ask us how we were doing, we had to flag him down several times to get more water and to get the check. He was very friendly, but was not the most customer oriented person. Everyone has their day, I guess. Other than that, we had a wonderful meal. Would definitely go again.

My family, party size of 8, were staying in Boston over Memorial Day weekend and this was the worst food experience we had the entire trip. I must preface that there are two parts to this review: a service aspect and a food aspect. Food wise- it is not worth spending your money to eat what they gave us. Presentation was out of this world. Serving kids popcorn chicken inside a popcorn bucket- uh YES!!!! How cool?! Not worth it though in the long run. Everyone in our party except the 7 year old didn’t like the food. The steak was supposed to be rare, the fish was fishy and dry, and no one’s plate really tasted all that good. It looked good, but just wasn’t good for the amount of money spent or the caliber in which the restaurant marketed. Ambiance wise, the place we were seated felt like a private corner and the place is decorated nicely. Service wise- it could have been better…. The waitress did NOT ask us if the checks were seperste and then complained when we asked for the check to be separate. Now I try to give my servers a little extra grace, but even if you’re having a bad day- you shouldn’t take it out on your customers. Our waters were also running out and my family probably would have ordered more drinks if she would have checked in more often. My grace to that is the woman was obviously very busy tending to other people which is why we decided to just do one check at our own inconvenience to spare her. Final thoughts: I wouldn’t eat here simply because the food is expensive but isn’t tasty, but hey at least the place looked amazing.

Arrived in Boston later than expected as the airlines were having some issues. Nonetheless, we made our way to the hotel, checked in, and decided to have sea food for dinner. Across the street, within walking distance, we found Legal Sea Foods. The staff was friendly and understanding of our all-day flying experience, so they were patient with us as we took some extra time to review the menu. The highlight of the evening was the Mac-n-cheese lobster. As soon as our waitress set the plate down, we broke out laughing. First time ever: no bowl of Mac-n-cheese with a scoop of lobster meat on top! This time, the "scoop" was the Mac-n-cheese serve as in a lobster!! (See pics). Impressed, we were not only pleased with the presentation, but the dish was more than enough to share. The flavor of the lobster meat and Mac-n-cheese was very good. Spoiler alert: Plenty of lobster, so there was some Mac-n-cheese left over. We sat outside so as to enjoy the atmosphere and the sound of Boston traffic at night. Overall: excellent experience.

The staff was very friendly and helped us change our seats. But the food was a bit disappointing. First, there was some problem with the serving time — the raw food and cooked food came about 30 minutes apart, and we only got the cooked dishes after we reminded them. Oysters ($3.5 each) — sizes were very uneven, and overall just so-so. Lobster roll ($46) — the lobster was very fresh, but whether it’s worth the price depends on your opinion. Mussels — surprisingly good! Highly recommend. The sauce was also really nice with bread.

Booked a table for one and was seated at the bar (my own choice) ;02May2025 @ 1915. The hostess was pleasant and accommodating. I was greeted at the bar and immediately offered bread rolls and water (warm and delicious). The clam chowder was superb (a Legal’s must). I ordered the Cod Loin with coleslaw and Brussel sprouts. The fish was cooked perfectly and without any fishy flavor… excellent and moist. Dessert was a Boston cream pie … enhanced by the raspberries and chocolate drizzle, also excellent. The food & service were excellent. I do recommend and will return.

Saturday early dinner, I booked a table in advance, the place can be very busy at night, our server was very nice and friendly, the clam Chowder and the lobster bisque were great, we ordered the Tuna burger “ I was expecting a better version of it” it tasted like frozen tuna/crap/fish patty. My daughter order the fish you see in the photo, it was tasty and cooked to perfection.

Celebrated with some friends for my birthday. It was great all around. Our server was awesome, very professional and friendly. We had a couple other stops to hit so we went in for oysters and beer. And they gave me a slice of complimentary birthday cake too. Def recommend

Google
This was a great restaurant with a very welcoming atmosphere for families and couples. The menu had fantastic options of fresh local seafood and gluten free options. The lobster was sweet and succulent. The roll was a masterpiece. It was a delicious simple pleasure. The brussel sprouts were a delicious addition to this meal. This is a true Boston treasure!! I hope to be back in the future.

Yelp
While visiting Boston I figured I'd eat at Legal Sea Foods since it was across the street from my hotel and a friend suggested I put it on my restaurant list. I came about 6 p.m. during a weekday and it wasn't too busy so service was really great. I ordered oysters on the half shell, crab cake appetizer, and Boston cream pie. All 3 were outstanding!!!! Prior to having oysters at Legal Sea Foods I was absolutely not interested in eating raw oysters, but I'm a believer now. I'd previously had oysters in the South, but clearly New England oysters are a different (and delicious) ball game. The oysters I had were sourced from Maine, Canada, and Massachusetts and they were so delicious I order a second round. The crab cake appetizer was a decent sized crab cake and was served with a small side salad. The Boston cream pie was also very delicious and was surprisingly the first I'd ever had. Overall I really enjoyed Legal Sea Foods and I'll be back when I'm visiting Boston.

Yelp
We were in Boston for a night, I was having eye surgery next day. We were in the mood for seafood and had not been to the Park Plaza Legal Seafood location. I ordered the two mini filet mignons medium rare with jumbo shrimp (at an additional cost) - a $61.00 total for this dish alone. The one filet mignon I ate was nearly rare but really very very dry no juice from it , the 3 shrimp small to medium sized, and very dry as well overcooked. The sliced potatoes were sprinkled with paprika added to the dryness. The only good thing about this dish was the asparagus. When we eventually saw our server, we told her my dish was dry I asked for a bit of beef "ju"; much later she brought butter instead, said there was no beef ju, my meal cold. I had already eaten the 3 shrimps and one filet mignon and asked if she could pack the rest to go. She disappeared for a bit, when we did see her I asked for my take out and she appeared surprised. It seemed she forgo. She left and when she returned said they were cooking another. There was more that transpired - but much too long for review. When we got back to our hotel, I checked my meal. I was given a filet mignon that was totally overcooked, with some other leftovers not my meal. I threw it out. I WILL NEVER EVER GO TO ANOTHER LEGAL SEAFOOD RESTAURANT. There's one other comment, it's not attractive to see, young waitstaff hanging out in clusters - like a "hangout" doesn't look appealing in an expensive restaurant. I would not recommend this location at all.

Yelp
Came for lunch at the bar. Ordered the lunch special with the lobster roll and asked for salad to be subbed for the fries and salad. No problem, the bartender said. Food came- no salad. The lobster was dry as heck. Not tender, neither warm nor cold, just dry. The fries were mushy. I asked for my salad, he said sure, and 15 minutes later it never arrived. But that didn't stop him from charging me $7 on my bill- and then trying to explain it as "how you place the order" when I called him on it. Damn, what's happened to this chain? I want my $36 back.

Yelp
Six of us descended on the newest Legal location in Park Square on a Friday night and it was dead, just about 5 parties in a very large space. So that's not great in terms of the overall dining experience, but then the food didn't have much pizazz either. Clam chowder and my favorite salad, wedge with blue cheese dressing, were both very good, but nothing else inspired--and I tasted the ciopinno, the grilled shrimp (kinda dry), a few other things ordered by companions. It was an off night, or maybe they are just overextending themselves with this new location.

Yelp
I LOVE LOVE LOVE Legal Sea Foods, I hit one of them every time I am in Boston. I was working in Boston and my wife was traveling with me, and I ALWAYS hit Legal Sea Foods on my first night. The Park Square location was convenient, so I made a reservation and we headed there. We were seated quickly upon arrival, handed menus, and we ordered drinks. I ordered a Harpoon IPA, a local favorite, cold and tasty. Our waiter came to take our order, I ALWAYS have a lobster, or 2 depending on the price. I ordered 2 different sizes, this time was a pound and a half and a 2 pounder. I also ordered their scrumptious Clam Chowder, which I consider the best in the world. My wife also ordered chowder and had the Street Cod as a main. Our Chowders came and we piping hot and delicious. Then, my lobsters arrived, on separate plates as they were both so large! I love cracking my own lobster, there is something cathartic about the process, it makes the meal even sweeter for me. My wife enjoyed her cod as well. Our server was friendly and funny and checked on us during our meal. All in all, another perfect meal at Legal. We shared the Chocolate Pudding Cake for dessert. Legal Sea Foods has never failed me, and this visit was no different.

Yelp
Was invited to dine here to celebrate a dear friend's birthday. The food was delicious our server Nicole was kind and accommodating. It was a busy night as this place/location is popular. My overall experience was nice. Great service, good food!!

Yelp
Being in this part of Boston, this Legal Seafood location is pretty generic. The service was OK, but unfortunately, our waiter tried to upsell us on a second tray of oysters for his personal benefit. Literally, that's what he told us. It just wasn't very professional frankly. Sadly, the decor is just very IHOP-esk and the seafood was lackluster.

Yelp
Legal Sea Food is a chain in restaurant that I had been to previously in Boston but never to this specific location. I did not have super high expectations but luckily this time around it was much better than the last. I had checked the reservations spots in open table before going and they had a bunch open. I didn't bother to book one and when we arrived they said they had no tables. It was weird and there was tons of tables open + the reservations still available online. I asked if those are inaccurate and they said they don't always follow those. Weird. We opted to sit at the bar since we could sit down right away there without a wait. A few minutes later they allowed a 7 year old child and her parent/guardian to sit at the bar as well. I've never seen a restaurant allow a young child to sit at the bar in the late evening but oh well. Just thought it was strange. A huge plus was how friendly the bartender was. I wish I would have gotten his name but he was super charismatic and friendly! Took our orders quickly and made great drinks. We had the calamari as an appetizer and this was delicious. Perfectly crispy. The fish and chips for my entree was good also. It was a big piece of fish and seasoned well. The fries were fine! I will say that overall, I had better food and service this time around at legal sea foods than I did on my previous visit at a different location!

Yelp
LOVE this new location!! The bar has a gorgeous new wooden bar top (& it's a nice sized bar). Great space for dining. We tried the oysters and had martinis . The bartender Omar is awesome and knows how to make drinks and is super friendly. Come check out their NEW location right by the Park Plaza and Hermes (super close to the Public Garden. Enjoy this new gem! Ohhhh...and their New England clam chowder and lobster roll are amazing classics!!

Yelp
What a great way to start our stay in Boston - Lunch at Legal's. Enjoyed their Signature Crab Cake Entree, Fish Tacos and a cup of their New England Clam Chowder. All were superb. I highly recommend dropping in for lunch. I recommend grabbing a table on the patio. Service was fantastic. #DukeOfEats

Yelp
I really don't like giving this establishment 2 stars...but I just have to.... We were in search of a lobster roll and by passed many recommendations given from locals and went with a place close by our hotel as we were tired. Actually excited by the menu descriptions- everything sounded delicious. We talked ourselves into our original plan of a lobster roll. Photo shows half portion as the waiter did split for us ($43). A little steep compared to previous lobster rolls I've had. Coleslaw (very tasty, nicely spiced) and COLD fries. House salad dressed VERY lightly with chive dressing. Fresh, but no special flavor. I waited to be checked on...not particularly busy...then got up and asked the waiter behind the bar for pepper, mentioned our fries were cold. Within 5 minutes another waitstaff brought a half order in a bowl. These were COLDER I let the waiter know the second were colder.... Next thing we know, our check arrives, the 2 portions of fries still sitting on our plates, no offer to rectify the situation, nor offer to order dessert or more drinks (wish we planned) This was an easy fix....One Beer, house salad and lobster roll totaled $67. It was not over the top, Would not recommend ....I was really excited about eating here.

Yelp
The lobster roll was delicious. The lobster was fresh, the bread was buttery and overall very flavorful. The place is a bit pricey for being a chain, but it's a local favorite. Ambiance is casual, the service was quick and friendly.

Yelp
I been craving fish so I went to a couple of fast food places it did not hit the spot so one day after work I said I need the real deal so to my surprise after work when I got picked up I was greeted with the pleasant smell of Legals fish and chip platter. It was well worth every penny I didn't have to spend.

Yelp
Went there yesterday, the place is smart, very neat and clean. It fits the neighborhood perfectly, if I worked in the area I would eat lunch there at least once a week. The best way to describe it is "fancy casual ". You could walk in from the office wearing a tie, dinner wearing a sport jacket or jeans, even flip flops at lunch. The menu had lots of variety when it comes to seafood and several non seafood options for that one person in the group. Thanks to the lunch specials this place is the best option for Boston's tradition lobster rolls, a single lobster roll at Quincy Market is $34. Here it's a mini roll, which is a good size, and it comes with a cup of clam chowder, fries and coleslaw for $25. You can't beat it. Your choice of warm with butter or cold with mayonnaise. I had the cold, and that clam chowder is one of the best I've ever had. The special can also be crab roll or shrimp roll, and you can get lobster bisque instead of chowder. I was there with a group of 7 so we all had a different special and two people had chicken sandwiches which looked really good. We were there for lunch and the service was excellent, very friendly on time and on point. The bar offers everything you expect. Had a good time and I'll surely be back before I fly back to Southern California. I give this restaurant 5 stars.

Yelp
Had only been to the legal sea foods at the airport. The guy I was with, a Bostonian, told me that this place has always been good but is slightly less good now that it's sold. I had the crab cake entre, it was great. The service was pretty slow especially considering how slow the restaurant was during a late lunch

Yelp
I'm staying across the street at the Boston Plaza Park Hotel and I was looking for a seafood restaurant within walking distant! I sat at the bar and Shawn took great care of me! He made a beautiful Cosmo that was wonderful! I told him he should've served that Cosmo with a razor, because it was a bit strong! After I drank it, I felt like I should've shave the hair off of my chest because if it's strength! Don't get me wrong though it was delicious! Anyway, I had a cup of the clam chowder and it was quite tasty! It could have served a little hotter, but the flavor was excellent! I also ordered the clams with andouille sausage was that was fantastic!! It took a long time for the clams to come out, hence the 4 stars!! Shawn the bartender was awesome though! Give that man a raise!!

Stacy D.

Yelp
The menu had clear three choices listed where the items came from. Knowledgeable staff, attentive, polite, quick service.
google avatar

Yelp
Sad to say that a place with a good reputation shows this kind of service. 4 pm and an empty dining room, took the bartender 10 mins to realize we were standing at the front door to tell us the hostess will be right there. When the hostess saw us, she asked us, "are you all set?" Downtime is a killer.
google avatar

Yelp
In this town, many restaurants are reservation only and it can be frustrating at times, however the host made it work for a our party of 7 with a very little wait. The restaurant has a large menu but that Half Pound Maine Lobster Roll is MUST order, absolute must. Hot or cold? either way you're going to love it! Yeah, its a bit pricey but its huge, easy to split and share (not that you'll want to). I also ordered the crab cake sliders and these were larger than anticipated, add a splash of hot sauce or cocktail sauce and they're mmm, mmm, good! The Broccoli au Gratin is also incredible and quite large for a side item. The restaurant has a large dining room that is brightly lit, and a good amount of outdoor seating well.

Yelp
Ugh. We go to one of their other locations pretty regularly and always have a good experience. This visit was pretty rough. Came in on a Saturday, late afternoon. The place was dead, so we were seated right away. For some reason, they decided to do a staff taste testing on new menu items right before their dinner rush, and so the one server on the floor who we had was completely overwhelmed (she expressed this frustration to us several times). Our food took a while to come out (our waitress mentioned that the sushi maker was on break) and even longer to get follow up items like grated cheese, marinara sauce (by the time we got them, our meals were cold and 1/2 eaten), drinks, rolls, etc. The linguine and clams came out cold (so not appetizing), the sushi was not as cold as it should've been. Caesar salad was decent and as usual, the clam chowder was very good. Probably the only good thing about the meal.

Yelp
As a well-know $$ seafood restaurant, it is GREAT! The restaurant looked elegant and provided a very comfortable feeling. The staff were very considerate and friendly. It is a wonderful place for friends, family or business partners to have a lunch or dinner. We ordered legal signature crab cake, steak, lobster rolls, ravioli and a host of deserts. ALL of them were DELICIOUS! They were fresh and juicy. A very happy dinner there and one of the highlight of Boston visits.

Yelp
Legal Seafood is a go to for me one day each time I travel to Boston. Typically hitting the Long Wharf location for its ambience of the pier and water, I am not near there this time. I ventured across the street from my hotel tonight to take in their Park Plaza location. This does not have the water or a pier, but it has professional, courteous, friendly and helpful staff. The ambiance here is going to be its decor, cleanliness and again, the people. I entered Legal Seafood at Park Plaza and was immediately greeted with a smile and hello and, wait for it...."How may I help you?". Taken to my table, I sat down ready to order my usual cup of Clam Chowder and Lobster Roll. And hate to admit it, but a Pepsi too. Of course with cherry juice to cover up the taste. Coca Cola lovers know what I mean. My server, Maria T, walks over and greets me. From this point on, everything was taken up a level. I rattled off my order. She asked if I wanted to try their new Sea-Cutrie menu. She said I would not be dissapointed, and I was reluctant to give up the Clam Chowder for the Octopus Cocktail. Well, I can say I didn't regret it, nor did I miss the Clam Chowder. The Octopus Cocktail was a spin on Shrimp Cocktail but with different spice and sauce. The Octopus was so tender and very flavorful. Even though I like it, I see there are 4 other Sea Cuterie items. And, if you are in a group or one hungry person, there is the Grand Board containing every item of the Sea Cuterie. So Maria T visits me throughout dinner , which was nice. You know how some servers can hang and talk and keep you from really enjoying? Maria T made a point to make sure I was enjoying my meal and making me feel at home. She has great stories too. Ask her what all she does. Next comes the Lobster Roll. I only know it best as butter poached. Yummmmm. Not much else to say as it was just plain delicious. i also observed a very attentive bartender and wonder when he gets to take a breath. I didn't sit at the bar but, should someone decide to, I believe whoever does will be in good hands with him. I also want to say thanks to the Chef. He appeared to move around to where he was needed as opposed to some who leave their people without support. The other staff kept tables clear, clean and food moving throughout the night. Kind of an abrupt end, but I will say I am coming back to the Legal Seafood at Park Plaza location. I hope the same staff is here each time, especially Maria T. And yes, I mentioned Maria T so maybe one day she gets rewarded for a name recognition. Haha. Thank you Legal Seafood at Park Plaza.

Yelp
This branch of Legal Sea Food is not up to the high standards of other locations. The food is average in taste. The food was brought to us after long delays and was warm but not hot. The service was very slow.
google avatar

Gregory H.

Yelp
We were coming to Boston to see our kids and had to stop for a lobster roll. The clam chowder was outstanding, but the lobster rolls even more memorable. I got the warm one with the butter base and it knocked my socks off.

Andrew P.

Yelp
The service was great, but the food was awful. The oysters had us excited but the lobster was overcooked and we ordered the surf and turf and the filet that came with it tasted like the bottom of a grill $210 for garbage an for no one to even acknowledge how bad this was awful.
google avatar

Becca B.

Yelp
Lobster Mac and Cheese was the best thing ever! Our server was fantastic. We came in late and we never rushed. Cool ambiance as well!
google avatar

Pat F.

Yelp
We had the best experience! Our waiter, AJ, was wonderful. Had us all laughing, was very friendly, happy and efficient. A joy. The food was great, as were the drinks. The restaurant was lively and upbeat but we could still hear each other. Super experience!

Susan E.

Yelp
I just had the worst meal at Legal Seafood at the Park Square location. It use to be one of the best seafood restaurants in Boston, but since Mr Berkowitz sold it, it has really gone down hill. I had the Baked Haddock. It was dry and tasteless. The only good thing was the Clam Chowder. I have to say it was many years ago, but when Legal Seafood was in Inman Square in Cambridge, that's when it was at its best. I won't be going back there and would not recommend it to anyone!

Jules K.

Yelp
Service and drinks are fine...they should not offer sushi. I ordered sushi because I was in the mood and the Seaport location knocks their rolls out of the park. This place clearly doesn't employ a sushi chef and the nigiri I ordered was just sad...huge mounds of rice with fish pieces (plural) slapped on it. I'm willing to come back to improve my review but really just don't order sushi here.

Chase H.

Yelp
Hands down the best lobster roll I've ever had and I've been traveling up and down the north east. It's practically two rolls for one and flavorful. I am jealous of the person that ordered it because wow! I had the shrimp scampi that was also delicious! The lemon sauce paired perfectly with the shrimp. If you're in the mood for pasta, good pick! The service was also wonderful and very nice. Lemon drop cocktail and local beers were fantastic. Cool restaurant to top it off.

Peter K.

Yelp
Very bad service. Food brought cold to the table. Inattentive server. They rush you and success has gone to their head.

Tom R.

Yelp
Maria T is the best. Food was very good. A nice night out in Boston, and we will return and request Maria again!

Cherie D.

Yelp
Made reservations via Open Table for dinner tonight before a show. Had to adjust the time of the reservation but no issues. Drove over an hour in ice and snow only to find the restaurant dark and nobody around. Website has hours for today, we were able to make reservations... what's up, Legal Seafood????!

Shari M.

Yelp
My husband, daughter & I went for dinner last night, the food was awful! Service not bad! Cocktail good! They just opened but the food was terrible. We started with the fried calamari which was good. I had the haddock , it was dry and fishy. my daughter had the tuna. she ordered it medium rare, it came out raw. after sending back she describes it as like Beef Wellington, still raw! my husband had the shrimp scampi which was good. As for other aspects, we got there at 7:10, the lights were really bright, when they dimmed them everyone broke out in applause. The white shirt worn by the staff were cheap, I've never noticed this in any other restauran, it was just really obvious. . . I feel bad writing such a negative review since they did just open but were only here for a short period of time and its not inexpensive.

Susy S.

Yelp
Live within walking distance and decided to try this new location for the first time. Was warmly greeted upon arrival. Sat at the bar and ordered tuna burger. Tuna burger was outstanding, but the french fries were decidedly under cooked and the coleslaw tasteless. I will return, but will order my fries well done.

Shelly B.

Yelp
this new legal seafood in Park Square has the worst service, bartender, and general atmosphere. The Berkowitz family with turnover in the graves, if they ever saw what happened to the wonderful chain of restaurants. Not only are they rude but I waited 20 minutes for bread and rolls, never mind a drink I never saw. Stay away!

Samantha S.

Yelp
Everything I ordered (crab cake, tuna poke, oysters rockefeller, bang bang cauliflower) was absolutely amazing. The always fresh and hot table bread was an added bonus. They make sure your water glass is always full and the waiter was super friendly. Great casual neighborhood ambiance! Definitely returning and recommending.
