Ladies in dirndls serve Austrian fare & European beer amid Alpine-lodge decor & an Oktoberfest feel.
"After closing in 2020, Leopold’s reopened in May of 2023 to bring back the alpine German-Austrian party vibes to Russian Hill. No matter how your day is going before heading in, you’ll always leave having consumed way more beer and schnitzel than you thought possible—so will everyone else. It’s always a constant shouting match here—because of the heavy pours and giant two-liter boots, this place is always at a decibel level that your doctor would find concerning. The food here can vary from dry and tad underwhelming (looking at you, weiner schnitzel) to fun and comforting (kasespatzle). Either way, all of the food is appreciated, especially after the boot-chugging contest you’ll likely have with the next table down. " - julia chen 1, lani conway, ricky rodriguez
"As of May 2023, the steins are once again overflowing at Leopold’s, the longstanding Austrian gastropub of Russian Hill. Coming out of a three-year closure, the bar and restaurant continues to offer hearty, stick-to-your-ribs type fare including braised short ribs, wiener schnitzel, and beef goulash alongside a list of beers from Germany, Austria, and the Czech Republic." - Lauren Saria, Eater Staff
"Leopold's is a party where the lager flows freely and the decibel level might raise your doctor's eyebrows. This German-Austrian beer hall looks like an alpine lodge, complete with a deer head and a long communal table where giant two-liter boots are the norm. While the weiner schnitzel is a bit dry, the ooey-gooey-cheesy kasespatzle and rich flatbread flammekueche are the perfect companions to all that imported kölsch you'll inevitably order. Either way, all of the food is appreciated, especially after the boot-chugging contest you’ll likely have with the next table down. " - will kamensky, julia chen 1, ricky rodriguez
"A visit to Leopold’s means you’re going to drink a lot of beer. It’s simply the nature of things at this German-Austrian party cabin in Russian Hill. The inside looks like an alpine lodge with a deer head on the wall and a long wooden table in the middle lending itself to a communal vibe. Due to heavy pours and giant two-liter boots, this place is always at a decibel level that your doctor would probably be concerned about, but that’s exactly why it’s a fun time. While the weiner schnitzel is a bit dry, other dishes like the ooey-gooey-cheesy kasespatzle and the rich flatbread flammekueche are the perfect sides for all that beer you ordered. photo credit: Erin Ng photo credit: Erin Ng photo credit: Erin Ng photo credit: Erin Ng" - Ricky Rodriguez
"Leopold’s, an Austrian restaurant and bar known for its meaty sausages and staff's dirndls, is reopening on May 11 after a renovation. New menu items include smoked trout tartare over a kohlrabi slaw and a roasted beet salad." - Paolo Bicchieri
