The 17 Essential Dakar Restaurants

"Tucked into the Sandaga Market in Plateau, Bante Yi is famous for its barbecued skewers of meat and poultry. Streams of people and plumes of smoke come and go from the alley, where a handful of vendors are located. Inside, customers rotate on wooden benches set around various grills, as workers roast skewers of meat over strong charcoal fires. Accent your order with some mustard and a bit of kankan, a dry blend of several spices including ginger powder, chile powder, and pepper, which makes every bite of meat vibrant. Regulars will tell you that the Bante Yi experience is much better at night." - Yasmine Fofana

Chef Pierre Thiam Explains Senegal’s Beloved Barbecue Traditions - Eater

"Bante-Yii, which means “wood” in Wolof, looks like a scene out of a movie. The dark, run-down space is home to a food hall of sorts, with a series of vendors who hail from all over West Africa doing their own styles of barbecue. Choose the grill that looks best, park yourself on one of the low, wooden benches nearby, and watch the action as you await your meal." - Pierre Gorgui Thiam

Best and cheapest street food in town. Highly recommend it if you don’t mind coming out of this hole in the wall thoroughly doused in barbecue smoke. Don’t forget to have a local coffee from one of the street vendors on your way out.
