The Best Restaurants in Hochelaga-Maisonneuve | Eater Montreal

"Les Canailles opened in 2011, and in the time since has become a top choice for tartare, foie gras, oysters, and Mediterranean fare. Grab a seat in its warmly lit dining room, outfitted with wood tables and panelling, and choose from a menu that includes cod fritters, burrata in gazpacho, paella, and magret de canard (duck breast)." - Valerie Silva

We visited Canailles in Hochelaga (Montreal, QC) as part of the "MONTRÉAL À TABLE" event, and it was a fantastic experience. This "apportez votre vin" (BYOB) bistro has a wonderfully lively and cozy atmosphere, perfect for a night out. The food was the star. We started with the oysters, which were absolutely delicious and incredibly fresh. For the main, the porc (pork) was cooked beautifully, proving the kitchen's skill with classic French techniques. We finished the meal with a wonderful selection of cheeses from Quebec—a perfect end to the night. The service was friendly and efficient, especially given how busy it was for the event. For a high-quality, creative meal where you can bring your own wine, Canailles is a top-tier choice in Hochelaga. Highly recommended!

Absolutely lovely restaurant! Food was super delicious. Oysters and mussels were amazing and full. I had the steak/fries with pepper sauce. Meat was super tender, great sauce. Fries delicious, served with mayo. My friend ordered the mussels, so plumped in a white wine sauce. Other friend had scallops and chorizo, delicious as well. It is bring your own wine. We also took as an appetizer the tempura asparagus in a red tomato sauce, super delicious. Service is impeccable, professional, fast, extremely friendly and not snob. Prices are very friendly. They have a terrasse but was still too cold. Will be back without hesitation! Love this gem!

Google
We were three people and tried the Montreal à Table menu. Service was good. The first course was tasty, but the Lobster Bisque would have been better with croutons. The Duck Breast portion in the second course felt small, the Braised Pork Cheek lacked presentation, and the cod seemed pre-prepared and reheated, with an odd texture and no sign of searing. The desserts were very good. Cozy atmosphere, but a bit loud.

Google
Food was great, server was friendly and professional. I do want to mention it’s a bring your wine kind of restaurant, so it’s not very friendly for solo eaters. Also it allows bigger groups of people so it could get noisy. If you are looking for a date spot and able to chat nicely, I wouldn’t recommend here but a good spot for casual eating. — they change their menu frequently so be sure to check when the photos were taken.

Google
Les Canailles is a vibrant French bistro that delivers on classic dishes with a lively atmosphere. The 8oz steak frites is a must-try, with perfectly cooked steak and crispy, golden fries. The accompanying sauce, while a bit too salty for some, adds a flavorful kick. Beyond the steak, the menu offers other delicious options. The tartare was expertly seasoned and the salad was fresh with a delightful dressing. Service was top-notch, with attentive and friendly staff. However, the restaurant can get quite loud. Overall, Les Canailles is an excellent choice for a lively and enjoyable night out!

Google
The food was so so. The linguine was good but very salty!!! The salmon tartar so so .. didnt like it much. The salmon wasn't diced, it was sort of sliced. The steak with fries was ok, dry but ok.

Google
A very good restaurant, one of the best in Hochelega. We went as part of Mtl a Table, which consisted of a 3 course meal. I had oysters, which were kind of ordinary, a braised pork, which was wonderful and a brownie concoction for dessert. I’d give the place 4.5 stars, but since that is not possible I give them a 5. BTW, it’s a BYOB place.

Google
Ive been going to this restaurant every 6 months for a couple of years now. I was there in October 2025 (my previous time was in Spring 2025), and the quality and taste of the food has dropped significantly. I am unsure if they changed chefs, but the Rockefeller Oysters and steak were below par for what I was used to at this restaurant. I was very disappointed that I was not getting the high level of dishes I've grown used to in this restaurant, but at least, despite the restaurant being full (thus why it was so noisy), the service remained very pleasant.

Yelp
Amazing vibes! I'm from San Francisco, so anything not dirty gets a 5 star. The food in my opinion was more fresh and American food. The meat were very juicy and I would recommend here once more.

Yelp
I'm not amazed with the food. Magret de canard is slightly overcooked and the gravy didn't bring out any special flavor. For the paella, I would've liked the taste of seafood to blend in more in the rice. They were pretty generous in the amount of seafood in the plate though. Service was also excellent and price is decent as it is a bring your own wine.

Yelp
Really 3.5 stars, reviews here are accurate. Food isn't that amazing given the price, but if you are nearby maybe? Probably lean towards the specials as my beef and duck pastry was the best dish of the night. I thought the salmon tartare was mediocre, but my partner thought it was pretty good. Duck was overcooked and drowning in brown gravy that added no flavor to the duck (get the fries and make poutine here). The paella was okay, but one note for my taste. For french cuisine, need to better balance fat with acid and more textures (crunch) and flavors. We had an early reservation, so we didn't mind the glacial service and they got an extra half a star for realizing it and offering us a free trou normand while we waited for our mains. The cream cheese in my caramel pot with crumbles dessert needed to be lighter/whipped. Noise can be quite loud. There are better BYOBs in Montreal at this price.

Yelp
Fun night with the boys. High school friends unite. The place is in an old neighbourhood which is changing. Gentrifications. The place was a little noisy seated next to the kitchen speakers. The menu is simple but offered some variety. They had the menu of the day on "ardoise". I wanted the foie gras but they charge a ridiculous surcharge if not taken with their special. The salmon tartare was nice. The risotto was cheap on shrimp. The bavette seemed attractive and probably the way to go. The pavé of salmon looked appetizing as well. The staff was friendly and busy. I do recommend this place with friends or a date.

Yelp
Recommended by friends, we found ourselves in this establishment on a boring weekday. We brought our own wine, which we purchased at the SAQ a few doors down (always nice when everything caters to your needs). I went for the bone marrow entrée and the hubby decided to try the foie gras parfait. Both were absolutely delish, off to a great start! For our mains we had the hamburger steak (with foie gras again) and the baby back ribs. And again tastiness abound, score! (the ribs were very different in flavour..citrus-y and fresh, unique and less "heavy" than your standard ribs) By that time the place had filled up and everybody seemed to enjoy themselves, animated conversations were all around us. The kitchen is open, so we could see the chefs flambé dishes and work their magic, very entertaining. No dessert for us, even though they looked very nice when I glanced over at our neighbour's table, we were way too full after all the decadent food! In short: A vibrant lively place with food that fits it's ambience perfectly.

Forbidden Meal ..

Yelp
If you are looking for a romantic yet causal BYOW kind of place for a date or a get-together in a small group of friends, this place is an option. However, don't hope for the "it" factor or any kind of "punch" because I have a feeling Les Canailles is still in the "safe" zone for now. Great ambience but it is lacking in the food department. Yelp
We went with a bunch of friends. Overall I liked it and worth a try. Had the ducky dumpling as an appetizer : amazing!! The beef for dinner was too raw, thing is they did not ask for a cooking preference.. So it ranger from medium rare to medium. Too bad i don't like blood in my plate, but my friend switched her plate with mine and it was great then! It was very tasty. Desert was ok. Food price for three meal course and byow (40$) though they did the billing wrong and we had to point it out.

Yelp
I went there twice. First about a year and a half ago, and I had one of the most memorable entrées of all my life: scallop in a sweet corn cream perfumend with chorizo. Simply fantastic, and also the first time I tasted this corn/chorizo combo (which seems more popular nowadays). The consistency was perfect, the chorizo wasn't all over the place. So good I can't remember what I had afterwards! Last time I went though, the menu was much less adventurous which I found a bit disappointing; but still, I had maybe the best foie gras I ever tasted this side of the Atlantic, followed by a great tartare. Maybe a bit pricey overall, as is often the case with BYOBs, but the ingredients are top quality so nothing shocking here

Neli S.

Yelp
Not my beat experience. Food was mediocre. It wasn't worth the price! I ordered salmon tartare! Nothing special about the appetizer or desert either. And at the end we had a very cheap behavior too. They asked for extra 2$ just to take the desert out.

Yelp
was disapointed with my last visit to Canailles used to be one of my fav BYOW (i can walk to the resto) but did not like the "new" shorter menu; nothing was eye-popping, jaw-dropping the food was ok, but a 14$ appetizer of sweet breads that has only 3 small pieces that are not too tender... the rest of the food was good (they always have good tartares) surprinsingly the service was average, our waiter seemed to be way over his head and seemed to not appreciate the fact that we were speaking French and ENGLISH at our table...) (he actually was gone by the time we finished our meal!!) thank God, the other waiter who attented to us later was WAY better and friendlier. it seems as if Canailles feels the pressure of a new BYOW restaurant opening soon in the area... i feel he changed his menu, lowered the prices (wich should be a good news!) but the quality was lowered too... will probably give it another try, but i feel i've been too many times and maybe it's time to move on...

Yelp
A great BYOW experience. At Canailles you can enjoy a great meal at a reasonnable price (other "fancy" BYOBs tend to charge way too much for their entrees). The foie-gras burger is to die for. It is a huge hamburger. With a huge piece of foie gras inside the patty. OMG. Quality food, good service, cheap wine, rince, repeat.

Yelp
Délicieux de l'entrée jusqu'au dessert, en plus d'être 'apportez voter vin'. Tous les plats que nous avons commandés étaient sublimes, j'ai rare meant aussi bien mangé à Montréal.

Yelp
The food is really good. Menu is all in French but got it all figured out. We had the prix fixe dinner with appetizer, entree and dessert. My daughters ordered the steak and were perfectly cooked with port wine sauce and mashed potatoes. I ordered the fish which is the special of the day. Fish is surprisingly cooked just nice and very moist. My husband had the duck and he had no complaints.
