All of Chicago’s Past James Beard Award Winners

"Chicago’s largest and most successful restaurant empire started out four decades ago as a local neighborhood eatery. Since opening R.J. Grunts in 1971, Lettuce Entertain You owner Rich Melman expanded across the city and then the country with dozens of concepts that span various themes, trends, and price points. From the casual — such as M Burger and Wow Bao — to shuttered fine dining stalwarts like Tru and Everest, the company has left no need unmet in its vast lineup (RPM, Sushi-san). In honor of Melman’s accomplishments, the James Beard Foundation presented him with a Lifetime Achievement Award in 2015." - Naomi Waxman, Eater Staff

Went to a restaurant and used a gift card on my phone. It had a QR code and a long number identifying it. The waiter walked away with my phone to scan it. THIS IS WRONG in several ways .... 1. My phone has private and personal info in it 2. What if it's dropped or broke? Just have waited take a picture of my screen with their phone or the restaurant smart gadget they carry. NOT HAPPY! It's bad enough we all tolerate their 3% surcharge they sneak in on the bottom of menu/receipt.

We had my birthday dinner at L. Woods this evening. I had the ribs. They were the best ribs I have ever had-done perfectly and extremely flavorful. Our server, Sean, was delightful and even sang Happy Birthday to me. I come here very often and the food and service is exceptional!!! It's my favorite restaurant and I go out to eat quite often.

Increasingly, their restaurants have a factory-feel. And they keep that sneaky 3% surcharge on the bill leftover from pandemic days. “In lieu of raising prices” but their prices have gone up every year if you look at old menu photos. Main complaint is that the food served at their restaurants just has a corporate, commercial feel. They’re basically like an Applebees, Olive Garden or Chili’s.

The food is consistently good and the service is too. I like almost all of their restaurants and always have. So why only 3 stars? The reason is at L’Woods (and perhaps other Lettuce restaurants?) they add a 3% surcharge, at least in carry out…possibly dine in, too. They used to post it and let you know in advance along with an offer to remove it as desired but apparently they don’t post it now. I don’t recall seeing that information tonight. To be fair they did list a “service charge” on my receipt which I didn’t see until I was home. Not noticing anything, I asked if they were still adding the 3% surcharge. They confirmed the surcharge and politely removed it at my request. I believe this surcharge may have been intended for the benefit of the kitchen staff which may or may not be true. Regardless, Lettuce Entertain You can well afford to adequately fund their operations including decent and fair compensation for their employees without adding an obscure “service charge”. If they need to raise their prices (and they have) so be it. However, I refuse to subsidize Lettuce beyond paying the price on the menu and leaving a generous gratuity. This “service charge” leaves a bad taste in my mouth. Not a good thing for a restaurant.

I had worked in a bartending position at the Eccentric in 1990 ,hired by Kevin Brown and at the same time worked at the Corporate office as a receptionist, hired by Charles Haskell, Absolutely loved both jobs .

I dined at Wildfire in Schaumburg this evening. I will never dine at Wildfire again after my experience. We ordered and was eating our steaks when a young man began sweeping the carpet and creating a large cloud of dust and dirt toward us. I asked him to please stop. He went to the other side of the table and started to sweep again with dust and dirt flying. I asked to speak to a manager and was told they must sweep before closing. No apology.

The server I had wasn’t great but the service I had from the rest of the restaurant was fantastic. There was too much salt on my wing weenie and clams with red sauce and I told my server he rolled his eyes and didn’t believe me. The sous chef came back with a new plate that was much much better and he explain to me what happened with the first dish. Still left the gentleman a 23% tip but he didn’t take itAs he misunderstood and took five dollars instead of only leaving five dollars that’s kind of crazy. But management helped and he got his full tip and I got my five dollars back

This review is purely employment based. Because I feel reviews come in many forms. So if anyone is lookin for a place to work don’t work here they transfer you around. Apply with no communication. Now in my opinion when I can’t get a hold of someone about an application and constantly having to call and being told that no one is there when I have called several times I just take it as you have to know someone to work here. But that Also goes into is this how they treat customers/guests when they have an issue. I don’t know but at this point I wouldn’t let them entertain anything of mine or me because of this issue alone. Again my opinion is purely employment based.
