When I die I hope to go to Librairie Gourmande heaven (as long as heaven also has a kitchen to cook in and, while I'm asking, my favorite people to cook for...).
This double-decker shop is packed floor to ceiling with cookbooks covering every feasible cuisine. From Gluten Free and Haute Cuisine to Iranian and Japanese, they've got it all, including a fantastic selection of cross-disciplinary books on food design, food history, dieting, farming, food politics, etc.
Not only do they cover the most culinary ground of any bookshop in Paris, they also have an incredibly knowledgeable, sweet staff that is eager to please. When I was researching a paper on food design I spent fifteen minutes speaking with a sprightly, whip-smart woman who had been there since the dawn of time and knew the place inside and out.
This was before the shop got its much-needed face-lift. Even with its more modern, organized design, this place still is packed with personality and is any home cook's culinary wet dream.
