The 14 Best Hoagies In Philadelphia

"The hoagies at South Philly’s Lil’ Nick’s Deli prove the power of persuasion. Because if you're walking anywhere nearby, you’ll see people devouring their hoagies and immediately convince yourself that you can’t live without one. The casual storefront is a neighborhood icon—their toasty seeded bread is stuffed with premium cuts of meat, cheese, and toppings that all balance sweetness, saltiness, and spice (if you add hot peppers, which you should). Our go-to is the Italian Inferno, which stacks hot cured capicola, hot soppressata, and sharp provolone that works together in a peppery, meaty dance. And since they open at 10am, you can (and should) add it to your breakfast rotation and we wouldn’t judge you—nay, we applaud you." - alison kessler, candis mclean

The 13 Best Roast Pork Sandwiches In Philadelphia

"This South Philly corner spot combines slow-roasted, shredded pork loin, slightly crunchy broccoli rabe, and broken bits of provolone that look like puzzle pieces. We suggest you go early because it’s the kind of place that can sell out any day of the week. Everyone knows that this small mountain of meat, cheese, and sauteed veggies is more comforting than sitting by a fire on a 20-degree day. " - candis mclean

Lil Nick’s Deli - Review - South Philly - Philadelphia - The Infatuation

"This South Philly corner spot is the kind of place that will make you fall in love with Philly sandwiches (aka, everything here is great). But it’s the roast pork sandwich we seek out to console us after an Eagles loss or any time we hear a rumbling in our stomachs. It combines slow-roasted, shredded pork loin, slightly crunchy broccoli rabe, and broken bits of provolone that kind of look like puzzle pieces. We suggest you go early because it’s the kind of place that can sell out any day of the week. Everyone knows that their small mountain of meat, cheese, and stewed veggies is more comforting than walking into a warm house on a 20-degree day." - Candis R. McLean

Lil Nick's felt like how a deli should probably feel like in Philadelphia. Sports radio going in the back and a little back and forth banter. The gentleman working the register was easy going and it felt pretty laid back inside. Parking and the roads were a bit of a nightmare in this area so I'd walk in or park a mile away in a more parking friendly neighborhood which is what I did. I ordered The Big Nick Cutlet and it was a solid hoagie. The ratio of ingredients was excellent and the bread was so so so so  soft. It was honestly all I could think about initially, like wow this is some amazing bread. The cutlet was seasoned well and cooked perfectly while the extra sharp provolone added a nice bite to it. I would've maybe liked a tad more peppers and for them to be a bit sweeter but other than that, I was pretty darn pleased. It was well worth the visit to stop here.

Google
A modest South Philly gem where we sought refuge after long lines elsewhere, which made us feel like we had discovered some secret foodie cheat code to save an hour and a half and also have more special and tasty experience (no shade to the sandwich joints we bypassed). So many goodies at both Lil and Big Nicks, I felt like a kid in a candy shop. Everyone who worked there was incredibly friendly, adding to the charm. But most importantly, the chicken cutlet sandwich (we got the South Philly Cutlet add roasted reds + hot honey) was so good that we ate it in almost complete silence with short interruptions of “omg” and “yum” - can’t wait to come back to try more.

Google
Usually don’t leave reviews but this place was excellent! (Italian inferno) may be the best hoagie I have ever had! My girlfriend got the chicken Parmesan sandwich and loved it as well. Definitely recommend trying this place to anyone who hasn’t.

Google
This is the epitome of a classic South Philly deli. Family-operated, high-quality hoagies, and incredibly friendly staff. They have an expansive menu, but you really can’t go wrong regardless of what you pick. You can tell that Nick and his staff take pride in what they do, and there’s a reason why they’re a staple within the neighborhood. I ordered “Thee Dag” chicken cutlet hoagie and “The Taste of Italy”, and would highly recommend both.

I’m a 78 year old lifelong hoagie eater. Nicks is hands down the best. And the Chicken cutlet sandwiches are out of this world. If you don’t like the various cutlet sandwiches I will pay for them. They are great with great Aversa bread

10/23/24 My husband did a take out order and all sandwiches were really good. We had the hot roast pork, an Italian hoagie and the Dag 2.0 which is a cutlet with cheese , procuitto and hot honey. A small sandwich shop with excellent hoagies and specialty sandwiches, like cutlets, hot roast beef, meatballs, etc. I highly recommend the hot roast beef. The beef was tasty, and tender, really good. The hoagies also very good. Definitely will order again and the owner was very welcoming.

Google
This is a must try spot. They were not the friendliest but also weren’t rude, they were just short staffed and super busy but I understand the frustration that comes with that. The food though is ABSOLUTELY AMAZING. One of the best hoagies I’ve ever had in my life. I had the Italian. We took a day trip from VA to try some places and this was my favorite! So good we tried to go back but they weren’t open because it was around the Super Bowl and they were too busy for more orders. It’s just amazing! Please do yourself a favor and try this place. You will not be disappointed!

Google
The original Italian hoagie is one of the top three all-time. Aversa’s rolls make it outstanding. The see-through paper thin slice of the prosciutto is MasterClass.

Yelp
Wow. This place has top notch hoagies/ sandwiches. Went here on a Tuesday afternoon. Easily found street parking. Ordered in person and waited about 15 minutes. Had the DAG 2.0 (a chicken cutlet type of sandwich) and a classic italian with the works. The Italian was upper tier of hoagies. Flavors were amazing using the freshest ingredients. The bread was decent but wish it was softer. The DAG 2.0 was amazing too. Definitely coming back to try the other sandwiches.

Yelp
Always fresh and friendly! I love the corned beef on plain roll! The way they apply the lettuce and toppings keeps it from getting soggy! It can take me some time to finish one so I really appreciate it not totally disintegrating!!!!

Yelp
One of the best hoagies I've ever had. I had a hankering for a hoagie and decided to ride 10 miles in the freezing cold to get one. Worth it!

Yelp
My 74 year old husband went to pick us up two roast pork hoagies. He came home, we opened the sandwiches and the roast pork was so overcooked and dry we couldn't eat it. He went back, asked for the owner. He handed the owner the sandwiches and explained what happened. The owner became enraged. He threw the sandwiches across the room and started yelling at my husband. We have bought many sandwiches there as well as large hoagie trays and have never had a problem. My husband told him that and he said "I've never seen you here". He gave my husband his $27 back and didn't even ask if instead he could replace the sandwiches with a hoagie or something. He threw my husband out and told him never to come back. What a disgrace. He should be ashamed of himself. My husband came home so upset.

Yelp
Got the Italian Deluxe and can't complain. Bread was fresh. Cold cuts were sliced thin and tasted like cold cuts. I think this is a good rendition of an Italian hoagie. Can't go wrong with it.

Yelp
They have the best hoagies, hot roast beef and pork sandwiches. Everything is so fresh. Whenever I visit my sister Joan in South Philly, we get a hoagie there. We've also ordered trays of hoagies for a crowd. The rolls, of course, are perfect! It's the BEST!!!!!! MaryEllen

Yelp
Great hoagies, great service. It's that simple, but if you need more here are some facts. Lil Nick's has some of the best fried chicken cutlet and Italian hoagies in the city. Other reviews and lists will tell you the same and for good reason. The ingredients are fresh, the chicken cutlets are cooked to order, the rolls are very good, there is a wide variety of traditional and gourmet hoagies available, alterations/custom orders are welcome, and the staff is warm/friendly. In short - five stars, highly recommend.

Yelp
Lil Nicks is an extension of Big Nicks, a neighborhood deli where everyone knows you by name. Their long lunchmeat lines are bearable thanks to friendly neighbors asking about your family and the employees asking if you want your salami sliced the usual way. Relatable and loyal people that enhanced their business by adding to their greatness. Lil Nicks resides directly beside Big Nicks & specializes in sandwiches, hoagie trays & assorted party trays. Their employee Gary is a food artist in his own right, serving up the best hoagies and trays in South Philly that look so good you hesitate to even eat them, but you enjoy every bite once you do. They never disappoint.

Yelp
Great Philly hoagie. We heard about this sandwich from JL Jupiter on YouTube and it did not disappoint. Happy to support local during these challenging times.

Yelp
One of the best Philly hoagies I've ate! Perfect ratio of meat/l.t.o./oil on a seeded roll. I added longhots that were perfect amount of spice.

Yelp
Again never disappoint, I called for a delivery of a hoagie tray, prompt, friendly service as always, and at a very sad time, brought a smile and good food to the family who received the tray, thank you the only place I will buy hoagie trays from now on, my favorite South Philly deli!

Meghan C.

Yelp
By far one of my favorite delis in Philly. Always get a chicken cutlet hoagie- the best!! Recently got catering from Lil Nicks and it did not disappoint! The antipasto, hoagie trays and Caesar salad were delicious!!! Highly recommend!

Yelp
We ordered a large party platter for lunch. A large tray of 50 pieces was $73.95. We ordered Italian and chicken cutlet sandwiches. Everything was delicious. My only objection is that the sandwiches were a tad on the dry side. If we'd had mayo or something, I think that would have rectified this but sadly, we didn't have that either. The sandwich slices are a little on the small side as well. Otherwise, quite yummy.

Yelp
AMAZING hoagie. I ordered the Regular size not too long ago. Let me explain how good this sandwich was and how it was constructed. I ordered the Italian Inferno. First, let's start with how they created this flavorful beauty. They used Italian bread with the sesame seeds (because this is the RIGHT way to make an Italian themed hoagie). A nice even spread of mayonnaise and a light drizzle of oil to help keep the hoagie moist. After this, the lettuce and peppers go in and then the meats. Tomatoes and some light seasoning (I think oregano) to top off the sandwich. Now to go from here, everything in this sandwich is fresh. When I say fresh, that bread that was used had to have been just delivered. It was just flavor upon flavor with every bite. Everything within the sandwich just blended together so evenly. The hoagie also was presented beautifully and it was a sight to see until I devoured it. The environment is small. It is pretty much just a take-out type of spot where you order, pick up, and take the food home to eat. They deliver too. Very simple concept and their methods have been proven effective for over a decade. Also, with the menu, there are so many varieties to pick from and I had a tough time picking as everything sounded legit. Lastly, the guys behind the counter were nice and attentive. They asked what I wanted on my hoagie and I told them everything but onions (onion breath ain't a pretty thing). Definitely a great first time experience here and surprisingly I don't live far from here. I would highly recommend this joint 5/5 based on just my first time alone and the food they offer. Check them out.

Yelp
I just had one of the best hoagies I've ever eaten, and I've eaten ALOT of hoagies in my day!! The DAG hoagie was an amazing blend of flavors...perfectly made cutlets with fresh mozzarella, long hots, prosciutto and balsamic glaze! Ive never had anything like this...absolutely delicious!!!

Yelp
You haven't had an Italian hoagie until you've had it from Lil' Nick's. Huge, fully loaded, fresh, and delicious. You can taste every different meat and the sharp provolone. Service is fast and prices are reasonable. It's a quick in-and-out spot. Great for a short lunch break. They do close early.

Yelp
This has been my husbands favorite sandwich joint for 15 years now. He lived in Philly 15 years ago and has ranted and raved about their "Turkey Inferno" ever since I married him. Well we are from AZ and are finally paying our dues to Philadelphia and Lil Nicks was of course, at the TOP of his to do list. I went for the first time today and it lived up to every expectation! He had their "Turkey Inferno" & I had their "New Italian", it did not disappoint! I subbed the ham for turkey and it was probably the best sandwich I've ever had! If we lived here this place would be a regular spot for us! Customer service was great, really friendly. You can tell they have great relationships with the regulars that come in.

Heather C.

Yelp
Their hoagies are great! Only thing I wish for is that they had extended hours because they do close somewhat early (usually before I get home from work); other than that, this place is great!

Yelp
I'm still reeling from Nick's Veggie Supreme. A beautiful italian roll, battered eggplant, sauteed broccoli rabe, roasted peppers, topped with sharp provolone cheese. Wow. What a combo! The South Philly Cutlet (chicken cutlet with sauted broccoli rabe and sharp provolone) is the best I've had so far. Nick knows his stuff. My co-worker usually goes and picks up sandwiches for the office, so I don't know what it looks like. But from what the co-worker tells me, Jessica H has the 411 on all that down to a T.
google avatar

Caitlin P.

Yelp
A coworker and I grabbed hoagies here for lunch today. The veggie supreme was great. The broccoli rabe was cooked to perfection, not bitter at all. My one complaint is that, while delicious, the eggplant was fried (understandable for a deli though). Nick's has a decent vegetarian selection, which might not be expected from a no frills deli. The service was fast and the staff friendly. At $5 for a small, you are getting a good deal. I ate half of the hoagie for lunch and saved half for later. I would definitely go back.

Jenna R.

Yelp
Big fan, prompt and friendly service. Great food, great service. Never been in - just used for lunchtime catering, but I've been happy! Thanks Nicks!
google avatar

Yelp
Been going here for years and the food has always been great!!!! From party trays of hoagies and cutlets. To soups and chills I've tried it all. Meatballs are amazing too. I have brought friends here and they are also repeat customers. Nick must be doing something great bc I've seen him and his sandwich( lol) in the local papers multiple times. Thanks for the food and keep up the good work.

Yelp
Working rite off of moyamensing, drove past and decided to check out Lil Nicks, once you walk in, you get a full glance of the menu. The menu is short & sweet but you know what that's the way I want it. I'd rather my deli be great at the simple things, then subpar at alot of things. The inferno sandwich caught my eyes, so I asked if I have a Tuna Inferno was realistic and it was. Check it out, this sandwich is definitely one of the better tu a sandwiches I've had in Philly hands down, the only other place I can think of would be Chickies and they had to shut down unfortunately. Damn good sandwich I'm def gonna be back...

Tom M.

Yelp
I have been ordering from little nicks for 5 years. Always fresh and orders are correct. Chicken cutlets are hot and the quality and prices are second to none . I have visited the store and it is clean and as a former health inspector, I recommend this store. Sometimes, I 'change it up' and order from another store only to wish I have ordered from 'nicks'. The owner is on site and food always impresses my coworkers at the hospital and that's not easy! It's a little store with big taste!

Peter R.

Yelp
Best Hoagies an hot sandwiches in south philly .Italian special awesome hot pork an meatball sandwich melt in your mouth .Friendly staff.

Jessica N.

Yelp
Old school south philly hoagie awesomeness. Be prepared walking in for no frills south philly attitude. No seating are and two chairs are next to the door for you to sit to wait for your hoagie to be made, but it may be occupied by an old Italian man smoking next to the "No Smoking" sign. The hoagies are heavenly, a small hoagie (which is large by my definition) ranges from $4.50-6.00. I suggest the freshly fried chicken cutlet hoagie with fresh mozzarella, basil, tomato, and balsamic. Yum. FYI they only accept credit cards with at least a $10 purchase and they have weird hours. I have walked over and opened the door many times to be told they are closed... well then they should put a sign up or lock the door... Anyway, it is worth it to trek all the way to this corner of south philly for the grub.
