The 38 Best Restaurants in Honolulu, Hawai‘i | Eater

"Locals stop by Liliha Bakery for rainbow layer cakes, mochi donuts, and Coco Puffs, chocolate-pudding cream puffs topped with frosting. But the original Liliha Bakery location also happens to double as a legendary diner, serving excellent crisp waffles, char-grilled hamburgers, butter rolls with nuclear red jelly, and oxtail soup. Though the business has many more locations now, a seat at the counter of the original on Kuakini Street is still the best move. From here, you can witness the virtuosity of the short order cooks, which never fails to mesmerize. Must-try dish: Whatever main you choose, get the waffle as a side." - Martha Cheng

The 16 Best Bakeries in O‘ahu | Eater

"Five years ago, Liliha Bakery introduced poi mochi donuts, fluffy yet chewy rings that now (almost) rival the shop’s decades-long best-seller, coco puffs — cream puffs filled with chocolate pudding and topped with chantilly frosting. Liliha also offers a cross section of Hawai‘i’s favorite traditional bakery items, including ensaimadas, doughnuts, and filled malassadas." - Martha Cheng

Great Authentic Hawaiian food! Lots of options! Good service! We were a family of 20, and we were treated like family. Will definitely come back!

Google
I love this bakery! Lots of parking, service was a promt, this place can get busy, they have overflow tables in the kitchen! So you can actually see all the desserts being made! Pretty cool! Ambiance is slightly on the noisy side but still able to hold conversation! I've been here several times and the food is nothing short of amazing! Ordered: Butter rolls - 10/10 perfectly grilled nice and crispy! So good I crave it. MacNut Waffles with fruit - 10/10 perfectly cooked, nice and crispy has a nice bite! No need for syrup cause the macadamia sweetens it naturally! Fruit and whip cream were a nice added touch ! Steak and eggs 10/10 cooked to perfection! I opted to upgrade from regular rice to fried rice; fried rice was great! Cheese burger deluxe 10/10 so satisfying the patty was cooked ourfectoy and had a nice char to it, It was so good I didn't take a picture! Buns were nice and toasted well, their potato crisps are nice circle potatoe with a nice width very different but paired well with the burger! Perfectly seasoned too! Loco moco with egg 10/10 the gravy was bomb, about of rice was great! Nice char burger meat, perfectly seasoned ! Perfect plate, and would definitely order again! Coffee - 10/10 free refills, great bold coffee! Desserts: Cream puff, coco puff, matcha puff - 10/10 they are known for it! It's perfect and not as sweet as other places! All desserts are made in house, which I appreciate it! Quality food and desserts! Highly recommend this place!

Google
Great bakery and diner, got the loco moco, and the macnut waffle, both were really delicious. The loco moco had that Smokey taste from the grill, and the macnut waffle was light and crispy, the butter that came with it was very flavorful. Also ordered some pastries. Service was good, the place gives you an old diner.

Google
A must stop for breakfast (at any time) when in Hawaii. Got this 50’s Diner Vibes make you feel back in the days. The service and food was really good. I feel lucky that i had the chance to be there. Mahalo!

Google
I ordered a custom wedding cake to pick up when we landed and got some snacks then. We also came back the next day for a proper brunch and tried the waffles, french toast, eggs, and some proteins. I also enjoyed half of a yummy papaya. Excellent service and plenty of locals and regulars. I’ll definitely be back the next time I’m on island!

Google
This was our first time here, idk why it took us this long to try it. We over ordered on the desserts lol everything looked so tasty and definitely tasted as good as they looked. We also got breakfast, loco moco, omelette, 3 pcs banana pancakes, and waffard. Sooo delicious!

Google
Stopped with my friend who had just arrived. I had bowl of Saimin with chicken sticks. Filling & yummy. My friend had deluxe cheese burger. I didn’t get a pic of the burger, she was hungry!! Picked up a 6 pack of Coco Puffs to go. Enjoying them very much. It’s a must stop place any time we visit Oahu. Counter service was fast and our server was very friendly and helpful.

Google
We’ve stopped here spontaneously and lined up like everybody else. Once it was our turn the staff just skipped us and took the order from the people next of us. Nobody cared and asked who was first or anything. As we didn’t want to speak up immediately we waited for a second chance with the other person who took orders. But she also didn’t seem to care and made contact with the customer next to us. We didn’t feel comfortable so we ended up leaving

Yelp
I love this place. Love their ham and cheese croissant when it's hot and right off the often. My cousins said they have the best food for dinner. I love their poi donuts. There's also parking available.

Yelp
Our tour guide highly recommended this place (though coincidentally we had planned to come here that day anyway) and I can see why! The flavors of everything we ordered were incredible and went together so well. Nothing tasted bland or overpowering. We ordered a clam chowder which tasted pretty standard. Complimentary dinner rolls came warm, were super buttery and soft, and there was a guava syrup/jam (super sweet) in a little container that could be closed, which was awesome since we ended up taking that with these rolls in our leftovers box. The complimentary guava juice was also perfect! Kimchi fried rice was slightly spicy. The scrambled eggs I ordered were completely unseasoned but texture was fluffy with no burnt spots. I chose Portuguese sausage which was very savory and smoky. Same thing for the pork belly (we ordered the smoked pineapple pork belly as another entree). The pork belly wasn't the melt-in-your-mouth kind but more chewy, but the flavor and slightly sweet glaze (maybe pineapple to match the grilled pineapple slices?) were amazing. Garlic fried rice (substituted) was also pretty good, as well as the very creamy mac salad (from the mayo). We didn't buy any of the bakery items yet but will definitely come back to try other dishes and do so then!

Yelp
Decent bakery with Hawaiian themed items. To my amusement, every single uber driver that I tried booking with from the airport knew about Liliha. Just goes to show that Liliha seems to be infamous along with Leonard's. I had a malasada since pokemon taught me the term. Not bad. The malasada offered at Lilihas seems to be doughy rather than generous with the filling. I like that Lilihas has a lunch menu as well as bar seating. Lilihas seems to be a good place for brunch, and the parking lot has plenty of space, which is rare in Honolulu.

Yelp
Saturday morning breakfast. My wife had to have their Loco Moco, voted Best on the Island of Oahu by people on the island of Oahu! It was also her favorite menu item growing up in Hawaii. This is her comfort place! She even pointed out a waitress who had been there since she was a child. I created my own breakfast. Can we call it the "Bill's Big Breakfast in Paradise"? Actually, it's not so big.... an order of the Butter Rolls and Jelly, Portuguese Sausage, and half a fresh Papaya with a wedge of Lemon. In 10 years, it may just become a thing... like the Loco Moco. I coulda stayed there all day and tried everything on their menu and half the items in the Bakery! Service was quick and it's nice to sit at the counter and watch orders being filled on the grill. It can be crowded, but be patient and you can slip into a seat as soon as they are vacated. We never go to Oahu without a trip to Liliha Bakery. VIDEO: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-HdY5MI0_t0

Yelp
This place is definitely popular! We waited in line for a bit before selecting our sweets and it was definitely worth it. People were at the diner section as well. Once it was our turn in line we quickly decided what we wanted and paid right away! Super quick. The ambiance is a little chaotic but it's definitely more of a grab or order and go sort of place! There is a bathroom outside you have to request the code for as they change it frequently.
google avatar

Yelp
My cousin heard about this place so we had to try it out! This location has a cover area that seats maybe 15 or so as well as a bakery area. We were lucky to find a couple of open spots. We shared the moco loco which also came with buttered rolls that are warm and straight from the grill. I've had several moco locos in my day and this is by far the best one I've had. The portion is huge and sharing it was the perfect amount. The medium over eggs were cooked just as I like, and the gravy was very tasty. The rolls are served with a jam that didn't have much flavor to me but it's popular enough that they sell it in the bakery area. Definitely check them out if you're here!

Yelp
Get the Loco Moco with fried rice and add the grilled onions (we did not & definitely a mistake) Wait for the diner counter - there is a small room behind the check out station but the counter is the better experience Quick, delicious, WOW. Be prepared to be stuffed & roll yourself out.
google avatar

Yelp
Wow ! What a treat My hubby surprised me with a box full of coco puffs and green tea matcha puffs. I was so happy and I couldn't wait to eat one. I tried the green tea puff pastry and it was so yummy. It was freshly made and so soft like it just came out of the oven. The green tea puff is my favorite one. If you haven't tried it yet then you gotta try it.
google avatar

Yelp
Great desserts. Reasonable prices . Service is good as well. Walk in the store and makes you hungry. Loco moco is good too. No wonder why they have been in business so long
google avatar

James K.

Yelp
I love this place. No matter what I order it's always good. The grilled butter rolls are insane haha. Servers are attentive and kind. I haven't had anything here I would call "meh". The French toast with coconut whipped cream is super good. On this visit, I got the pork belly. So good

Yelp
A local and visitor favorite! I always have to pop in when I'm on Oahu. If you like sweets, this place is for you! The staff are always patient and friendly. It's a good family place and they also have a place to sit down and eat. Parking is always easy to find as well.
google avatar

Chloe H.

Yelp
A wide selection of breads, pastries, desserts, etc, but most famous for their coco puffs. They also have a sit-down section that is a diner. This review is for the pastry section since we didn't do a sit-down meal here. We came for the classic and got a coco puff and a green tea puff. Both of the puffs were incredibly soggy and stale, like they were left in the fridge for too long. It's fine that they're not fresh out of the oven (but Leonard's is?) but these fell short of all expectations. Liliha is unfortunately a miss for me.
google avatar

Jantel C.

Yelp
Tried the coco puffs again and it was served cold and it was way better than the first time I tried them.
google avatar

Marilyn B.

Yelp
We always come here for a working lunch. Come early as parking is tight because this place is ultra popular! The food is, of course, delicious! They have a plethora of items, and I would eat it all if I could! Their ambiance is great, the staff are friendly and accommodating. When you leave, you can always buy pastries at their counter so you can take some of their famous pastries home! Will definitely come back again and again! Thank you Liliha Bakery!
google avatar

Yelp
1. Easy parking at the Macy location for Liliha Bakery. 2. Easy parking. Hey these things are important. 3. Popular venue but sign in and wait list management efficient, 4. So many menu choices, it was hard to pick but then again our party of 5 enjoyed a variety of waffle offerings along with side dishes, including the garlic rice. Everything enjoyable and we shared. 5. The wait staff reminded me a bit of my experience many years ago at Durgin Park in Boston. They were "seasoned" and had personality. It was altogether a fun experience.
google avatar

Russ L.

Yelp
Nothing like eating at the counter at the Original Liliha Bakery location! The Loco Moco with fried rice, onions, and mushrooms is one of the very best in Hawaii.
google avatar

Jo C.

Yelp
Liliha Bakery is my neighborhood "go-to" for coco puffs and poi donuts for work, banana Chantilly 1/2 sheet decorated cakes for birthday parties, banana pancakes, grilled sweet bread/jelly and Loco Moco for breakfasts, and most recently a healthy avocado tuna sandwich for lunch. Recently we went in and unfortunately their credit card machines were down so it was only Cash Only...so bottom line I was on a budget LOL. I ended up ordering the Tuna Avocado sandwich for $13.50. I was amazed that this sandwich came out stuffed with I think a whole avocado sliced, alfalfa sprouts, tuna salad, tomatoes, lettuce and pickles on a grilled sweet bread. It was delicious! 1st time I've ordered a sandwich from Liliha Bakery and I was pleasantly surprised! Good thing the credit card machines were down;) prices keep rising but I'll continue to support liliha Bakery, great combination of local comfort food and delicious baked goods.

Yelp
Ordered cupcakes for my employees birthday! Everyone loved them! Great value for the quality I received! Will def pick them up again!

Yelp
Love this place sooooo much!!!! The wait is worth it and the crew is awesome. Tanks Joey & Marla Onolicious food! Cute diner and bakery. We had fun on our Monday lunch date.
google avatar

John T.

Yelp
I came to this location twice in the past two weeks. The first time was to get a birthday cake for a coworker. The second time was to get birthday cupcakes (red velvet and oreo) for the same coworker after I realized I celebrated her birthday a week too early :I What I love the most about this place is that its the location that opens the earliest (6:00 am) which is most convenient for me. The cake and cupcakes I got were enjoyed. Wish they had more cake selections. Also, the containers they packaged the cupcakes in smashed the frosting on all the cupcakes. But overall, this is a nice and convenient bakery for me.
google avatar

Angel L.

Yelp
3.5 stars Pretty quick service, you pull a tab with a number when it's busy and they will call out the number. We got the matcha & original. The pastry was a bit drier than expected but still decent!
google avatar

Andrea L.

Yelp
Beef stew hit the spot on a rainy day. No complaints there. We were less impressed with the loco moco. We felt like the gravy was under flavored, and we didn't like the char on the hamburger patty. The butter rolls went crazy though. I could've just ate these and been happy, no jelly needed. We were so full after our breakfast we didn't have room for desert, even though that's what we actually came for. But it was a very cool experience eating at the counter. FYI, when you see a seat open just walk up and grab it. But there will probably only be enough room for small parties.
google avatar

Roger L.

Yelp
Cool rainy day perfect to stop by for some Coco Puffs and Baked goods. Liliha's counter is always crowded with breakfast and early lunch patrons, and the line for baked goods is usually out the door. However the nice folks behind the counter are always fast and friendly. Everything is a must get here, but the Puffs are famous and are big and filled with goodness and won't disappoint. We grabbed a couple of boxes for some upcoming parties, with enough for us to munch on the way home. Pastries are flaky and always heavily stuffed with fruit and filings. Favorites - Mixed dozen of the Puffs since our family all has different flavor preferences, all the strudels but especially apply and guava, and the mochi donuts.
google avatar

Yelp
Had to drop by liliha bakery! Diner style seating at the counter, open kitchen. We got their loco moco with fried rice, as well as potatoes on the side. When we went they ran out of corn bread unfortunately. Their loco moco is solid. It's not the best i've had, but it hits the spot. Great portion, great flavor, very savory and hearty and we were able to share this between two people with a little bit of room left to try some bakery items too! We loved their cream puffs and their malasadas were good too! Super home style vibes, just what we were looking for Definitely would come back!

Brett R.

Yelp
Pure disappointment with my meal. Ordered the Mac Nut Waffard, cause it was reccomend. Mrs. ordered the Mahi Mahi with eggs. The waffard was a disappointment. Looked like an eggo, tasted like one too. Cold and bland. Never again. The Mahi Mahi and eggs, though, absolutely delicious. Tis why they get 3 stars. Should just have gone to the bakery counter....
google avatar

Mark Y.

Yelp
There's no substitution for the original Liliha Bakery! Stopped here for bfast a couple of months ago when Mark H was in town and I still have to say they have one of the best Loco Mocos around. It probably makes a difference that you have a front row seat to the cooking of your food. From the time you grab a seat to when you pay your bill, it's always a fun experience watching the cooks making all the diners' meals. Even getting the griddled butter rolls with that nuclear jelly is still a treat. Although, I'm not sure if it's changed but the jelly they serve the rolls with isn't as "nuclear"? It doesn't have that bright pink, glow in the dark, day-go hue anymore. No biggies, still fantastic!
google avatar

Desiree M.

Yelp
This place is an iconic bakery. I'd even say that Liliha Bakery (the original location) is a landmark. The coco puff and loco moco are my favorites. I have tried other pastries and sadly I am not impressed, hence the 4 stars. There were a few pastries I have tried and the fillings in the middle just tasted artificial. The one with the lilikoi filling, the lemon coconut cake, and a few others all taste like something artificial has been added--not to mention the use of food coloring--too many dyes.
google avatar

Isabel L.

Yelp
The poi mochi donuts will forever have my heart. Whenever I come back to visit, this is one of the desserts that I look forward to eating the most. The texture is super bouncy and chewy, with just the right amount of sweetness. The coco puffs are also delicious, the filling inside, and the topping on the top is just so delicious and unlike anything else.
google avatar

Vincent T.

Yelp
The original location is still the best. They have the best parties of all the locations. The old ladies that wait the tables are friendly and efficient. The line gets somewhat long during rush hours and after work. They need more staffing at the bakery section as the line gets long.
google avatar

Stephanie H.

Yelp
COCO PUFF!!! First time at this bakery and I had no idea what to get. We dined in for breakfast and also bought a bunch of goodies to go from the bakery side. The other guests recommended the coco puff to us which is their famous cream puff filled with chocolate like pudding and it was not too sweet! I'm not a cream puffs kinda gal but these were really good that I regret not buying a frozen box to take home with me to the mainland. I also tried the matcha cream puff and it was delicious. We tried the onion bacon roll and the pizza roll and it was really good too, I drool as I write this remembering my experience there. As for the breakfasts, we got the hamburger steak and the Portuguese sausage with egg and rice. The Portuguese sausage was juicy and smoky but the hamburger steak had a really nice charred taste to it. We got to sit at the counter and watch them cook everything too. Our food also came with their sweet butter rolls that they grill for you, it was good but a little greasy for my liking. Plus the syrup it came with tasted kinda like cough syrup. Overall I can understand the hype!

Ernesto E.

Yelp
The service was not so great. We had to flag the server so many times. It was 3hrs before closing. Not much people were inside dining! The outside dining area had two couples. I wonder why there's not much people eating here. Don't count on eating here. The food was mediocre. Nothing to remember. The desserts was ok. I would not come back...at all!
google avatar

Dung N.

Yelp
So glad this bakery was minutes away from where we had lunch! We got the infamous coco puff, a cocoa cream puff, and a poi mochi donut. They put our goodies in a nice box and we devoured them in the car. The poi donut was nice and chewy! I liked that the taro flavor was in the donut and not an icing. Both of the puffs were delicious and had a good ratio of cream in it. Overall, a quick and easy place to get some baked goods.
google avatar

Jennifer B.

Yelp
Love this Bakery, everything is so delicious! Take a number and be prepared to have some of the most wonderful pastries ever! We had the Matcha, Chocolate, and Custard Cream Puffs, which were lightly sweet, moist and very creamy. The poi and chocolate croissants were also so good! We actually came here twice in one day because it was that delicious!
google avatar

Lauren H.

Yelp
Best French toast I've ever had. Get the ultimate French toast, generous portion and so good. Coco puffs are excellent and so is the toasted bread. My husband has tried the fried rice and loco moco and enjoyed both. Grilled cheese is on great bread and we loved the banana pancakes. A must try!!

Donatello F.

Yelp
Haven't been to this location (Liliha) for awhile. I ordered the ensimadas and it was dry and hard, the butter roll had hardly any butter basically tasted like a regular dinner roll. The Pearl City location is way better. The ensimadas and butter rolls was how is originally was.
google avatar

Anthony L.

Yelp
We decided to have lunch at Liliha Bakery, and it was a delight to get to sit in the kitchen! Such a different and fun experience. We ordered the Veggie Omelet, Mahi Mahi and Eggs, and Loco Moco in both the 7.75oz and the smaller 5oz sizes. The Veggie Omelet was a hearty and satisfying breakfast. The Mahi Mahi was well-prepared and flavorful. While the Loco Moco plates were a bit drier than we expected, they were still quite tasty. Overall, Liliha Bakery provided a unique and enjoyable dining experience with good food. We'll definitely be back!
google avatar

Lisa P.

Yelp
Best 4 year old birthday cake ever!!! So glad I went to speak with the bakery when I ordered!
google avatar

Michael S.

Yelp
A must visit! I've never eaten in the restaurant, but I have been to the bakery many times. They have something for every sweet tooth, but the cream puffs are their staple and worth grabbing a few extra for friends and a late night treat. I've tried all the different cream puffs and I loved them all. Are they the best creams puff I've ever had? No, but they're reasonably priced and are Hawaiian twist on a wonderful French treat. I can't wait to go back!
google avatar

Brittany L.

Yelp
Stopped by hear on a Monday morning to try the famous Cocoa Puffs and was not disappointed! When I arrived it was a challenge to find parking like most places in Oahu. I was lucky and able to secure a spot in front. Once inside I ordered a variety of items... two Cocoa Puffs and two match puffs along with an Au pan and tuna ham roll. All items ordered were decadent, delicious, and fairly priced. The bakery was fairly crowded but the line moved quickly and I received my items quickly. This location is small and cozy with a good amount of seating inside for the size of the store. Note I did take my items to go and enjoyed them in the car. I will definitely be returning for some more sweet treats in the future.

Yelp
It is amazing that after all these years, Liliha Bakery has consistently remained loyal to all her customers!!! Although many years have passed, every time I walked in it was like when I was a kid, the gleeful excitement of delicious treats waiting to go home with someone and give joy in the heart. It's almost like a pilgrimage that anytime anyone comes back to your roots in Hawaii you must go to where you are happy and feel good. Liliha Bakery is such a place. Coco Puffs has been one of my favorite guilty pleasures. My all time is Chantilly Cake. Both unique with Liliha Bakery. It was a Wednesday evening, the food counter was full, the displays full of delicious treats. What a wonderful place to be!!! The bakery was warm and inviting!!! Even when leaving with goodies in hand I saw the familiar workers in white on a break outside the bakery taking a well deserved rest after masterfully creating and truly crafting joy in each bakery item. I wish they never ever leave. That would be a sad day. They say Disneyland is the happiest place on earth. I say it's wherever you are that provides you genuine satisfying, joyful and happy memories and moments in your life and in the eyes of those you love. Liliha Bakery is one of those places!!!

Yelp
Heard this was a must when in Honolulu. Stopped in and grabbed a 6 pack of coco and cream puffs. The staff was wonderful and nice. I must say... the coco puffs were my favorite by far. Absolutely delicious. The cream puffs were good as well, but the coco puffs were even better! Also, we got an onion pastry. It was so flavorful. Absolutely a must try in Honolulu, any of their locations. Can't wait to go back and try other things.
google avatar

John N.

Yelp
Liliha is tucked away in Macys 3 rd floor in the Ala Moana Center. We spoke to many locals and most of them said we had to try the Coco Puff pastry. We ordered 4 to go, and I must say they were very good. The frosting on the outside was sweet and the center was a chocolate type filling and was not too sweet. If you see a Coco Puff in a local bakery give it a try.
google avatar

Dina P.

Yelp
I came for the cream puffs which are fresh and yummy. I noticed it was also a diner and decided to stay to try the oxtail soup. When I got there around 10:30, the line was pretty short. When I finished my soup, the line was long. Overall, I highly recommend the bakery for baked goodies and the diner for breakfast. As for the oxtail soup, the meat was tender and the soup flavorful but not greasy.
google avatar

Tiffany L.

Yelp
Part bakery, part diner, this place is a classic spot to visit if you're an out of town visitor like I am. We arrived near closing time, but they still had plenty of stuff left in the bakery. I ended up picking up cinnamon butter mochi, some eclairs, and one of each of their four cream puff flavors. We also grabbed a bite on the restaurant side and split a large size loco moco. The servers & kitchen were pretty efficient since it was near closing, and we got our food quickly. It was a good size and pretty hearty, plenty enough to share between two people. It was tasty, but didn't particularly stand out to me as anything special. I finally got to try some of the pastries for dessert (and breakfast the morning after), and they held up well in the fridge. Everything was yummy and not too sweet. I particularly enjoyed the butter mochi and the cream puffs!

Yelp
This bakery in Oahu is great around the area. Delicious food, and it is worth it. 55$ for many different desserts, and everything was pretty good. Me and my family were happy after eating from this delicious bakery. Highly recommended. The place is cool and I the people who work at this bakery are kind and all the photos you see here are from this beautiful bakery. The service was rapid fire and I wish I would come here again but I'm just visiting Hawaii which is a legendary experience. If you don't like this store, then you're out of your mind. They even have breakfast. Come to this bakery anything its open. 100% recommend!
google avatar

Yelp
Liliha is one of the most classic bakeries in Honolulu. We went for pastries at night and they had a great selection of fruit pastries, cakes, and desserts. The breakfast was really delicious and filling for a good price. We sat at the bar seating but I guess there is additional seating in the back as needed. I ordered the corned beef hash with two eggs and it was good. Simple but well executed. The service is great, sitting next to the staff as they make the food is really cool. Definitely a place to try out for breakfast.
google avatar

Ronna I.

Yelp
Very tasty breakfast with efficient service! There is a bakery and diner. The diner is mostly counter service, and a lot of regulars eat here. You can tell by the conversations with the staff. It's like old friends catching up. It's no frills service but efficient and cordial. Solid breakfast food and definitely would return. The menu offered so much, and it was hard to decide. After we ate, we went to the adjacent bakery to purchase their well-known coco puffs. If you buy bakery items as a dining patron, there's a small service charge. Anyway, the line for the bakery moves fairly quickly. The coco puffs were very good but not sure they were as good as all of the rave reviews about them. It could be a case of our expectations being too high given the great reviews. There's parking in this strip mall.

Yelp
I feel like Liliha is a place that anyone visiting Hawaii will come by at some point. We went to the original location which has the place set up as part diner and part bakery. I like the option of seeing the food cook right in front of your eyes. Usually they are busy but the we came here the moment we flew in and fortunately, there was no wait and got seated immediately. I knew I had to try the oxtail soup. We ordered a bowl of that, along with saimin, Mahi x hamburger combo plate and pork cutlet plate. The pork and combo plate came with butter rolls which we shared. Butter rolls were so fresh, moist and so buttery. I'm sure they were made with butter already but they were treated toasted on the flat grill with more butter! Portion size is big and the taste was solid. The star I feel, however, is definitely the oxtail. The flavor is amazing! It reminded me of Vietnamese pho soup but with a Hawaiian twist. Although I was not sure what to think when I saw the mini tub of soup and oxtail meat being microwaved in front of me, the taste of it blew me away. The soup (pre-heated) was jellied so think of all the nourishing collegian you getting without taking a supplement! And definitely end your meal by grabbing a poi donut from their bakery section.

Yelp
This place is just a counter place until today we sat in the back kitchen where they bake the pasties. That was an experience. We enjoyed the loco moco the hamburger was made to perfection. The butter rooks go without saying and the pancakes were fluffy and delicious. I appreciate getting a seat but I think I like the counter experience.

Yelp
As I am a Honolulu native (now living on the mainland), people always ask me my top local spot--preferably not a fancy restaurant. I believe there are now 4 Liliha bakeries, but the original Kuakini street location is OG. I have eaten here since childhood. The liliha batter is heavenly and the pancakes come with an (un) healthy dollop of butter. I usually get one as a side order for breakfast. There is something magical about the grill here. Maybe the years of flavors on it, maybe the fresh preparation right in front of you. The sausage is fried just right. The butter roll is a sinful addition to your rice and pancake (YOLO). Incidentally, though not well known, the hamburger deluxe with half order potato salad is epic and worth taking out to eat later . The seating is counter only so expect a bit of a wait and don't be surprised if a foursome has to be split up. Totally worth it. I swear the counter staff hasn't changed in years, they are great.
