Yelp
I think three stars is a fair rating after two visits here.
My first visit was back in 2021 when I lived in Pasadena. Some friends and I went on a mini bar crawl to show some people from out of the country around, and I believe this was our first stop.
If you haven't been here before and you found this bar through Yelp, you might have to do some digging to discover it's actually in the basement of the Wayfairer Hotel. Just go into the lobby and take the elevator to the right.
It's definitely got a cool atmosphere year-round and speakeasy vibes that likely satisfy most speakeasy-searchers' wants, albeit overpriced drinks. If I had returned and had a consistent experience, I would have left this at four stars.
I returned with a different group of friends last weekend to try their spooky afternoon tea party. I guess usually it's just afternoon tea, but during October this year (and perhaps other years) they offer a spooky version. You can add a spooky alcoholic beverage for $15 more, and we did that.
The employee first went over the different teas they were offering, passing around cups of small, dried samples of each tea for us to smell, and at this point I was infinitely hopeful about how the event would turn out. The teas all smelled good, and we opted to try 3 of the 4 teas.
He then asked which of the two cocktails we wanted, and we each made our choice. Usually I don't opt for the darker drink, but it sounded like the better option of the two. I'm glad I did choose it in this case, because the lighter drink apparently tasted like it only had cheap sparkling wine. Although mine tasted good, it was obviously a watered-down mix, which was made worse by being added to a glass that was over half-filled (and overflowing) with ice.
When he brought out the teas, he brought out only three pots, yet we had five people. At every other tea sitting I've been to, you're paying for one pot per person, so each gets their own pot, even if multiple people ordered the same tea. I will say that the teas were good, and I think our unanimous favorite was the green tea (we also tried a black tea and a rooibos).
The table, quite frankly, wasn't meant to host afternoon tea for five people. We didn't have any extra space and we had to keep moving stuff around to make everything fit (making the plastic flowers the first thing to go). It's a tight squeeze for four or more people.
They brought out the sweet items first, which contained a lot of pumpkin. Some items were good, but many were too sweet. All of them looked like they had been bought in the pastry section of a grocery store. I didn't like that there wasn't enough of every item for every paying person to get to try. I also wasn't a fan of how entire tiered dessert trays came out before any savory items, which were sort of expected to be nearly finished before the savory food was brought out.
When the savory food was eventually brought out, it was sat, like the teapots, on a vacant velvet chair because the table had no room. Like the sweets, these items were heavily influenced by pumpkin and definitely fit the spooky theme: pumpkin tamales, deviled eggs, mole chicken sliders, smoked salmon and cream cheese on pumpkin rolls, and fried sweet potato sticks. It was a weird combination of items even without the pumpkin thrown in, but the pumpkin made everything weirder. I felt it only tasted good in the tamales, but my friends disagreed (that was the only one they didn't like for some reason). We all agreed the deviled eggs were good.
In the end, with the alcoholic drink add on, the total came to $75 PER PERSON plus tip. This was $10 more than what was listed on the website, so the whole experience left a bitter taste in my mouth.
Although the employees were friendly and it was nice to spend time with my friends, this experience was absolutely not worth $75 per person, and I'd rate it 2 stars.
Cool spot to check out, but skip the tea party. If you must try their tea party, don't go during October and don't add the extra drink.
