A Culinary and Architectural Gem in Jln Alor – Limapuloh Nails Nyonya Nostalgia
Having savored the most authentic Nyonya cuisine handmade by my late grandmother and mother over 39 years of my life, I know it's nearly impossible to match their timeless magic—the intricate balance of flavors, the soul infused in every stir. Yet, Limapuloh comes remarkably close, hitting around 80% of that gold standard. It's a truly credible effort and a monumental achievement for any kitchen.
The Nyonya laksa absolutely stole the show. That creamy, lemak-rich broth, packed with coconutty depth, fresh prawns, and a subtle heat from the rempah, is the best I've tasted in ages—especially after 20 long years enduring bland "Baba-poor" Australia! 🤩🥳 The pie tee offered crisp, delicate shells stuffed with a tangy shrimp and veggie filling, while the mee goreng brought solid wok hei with its spicy-sweet noodle tangle. Ayam ponteh and ABC soup were decent and comforting in their earthy simplicity, though a touch ordinary compared to the stars—no major letdowns, just room for that extra grandmotherly flair.
I'm equally blown away by Alex's passion for the enterprise and his painstaking restoration of this 1937 building, completed just 18 months ago. He lovingly preserved so many original architectural elements: the typical European themed stained-glass casement windows that filter light into jewel-toned patterns, ornate cornices, polished timber floor joists(imported from Burma), and intricate artpieces and decoration that whispers of Peranakan heritage. It's transformed into an impressive near-heritage gem, given tender loving care that ensures it can easily withstand the next 50 years of tropical weather, humidity, and wear.
The spiral staircase you pass on the way to the toilets is a personal favorite—it's a stunning focal point, with its wrought-iron railings and steps that glow ethereally in different shades and colors when backlit by the afternoon sun filtering through nearby windows. See my pictures to convince yourself.
This is an unmissable architectural and culinary treasure hiding in the vibrant Jln Alor neighbourhood. I hope this review motivates you to drop by, visit Alex and his incredibly friendly, attentive service crew, pay them well-deserved compliments for their outstanding preservation work and mouthwatering delights, all at such refreshingly pocket-friendly prices that make repeat visits a no-brainer!
