Eating Off Duty with JJ Johnson

"Lion's Head Tavern is my late night spot—it's a hole in the wall right by Columbia. I'll get a burger smash or their steak sandwich." - Marisel Salazar

Great bar, great food, great service. Only issue is there were too many cheaters at trivia night! I seriously don’t understand how you could be so immature that you need to cheat at bar trivia to make yourself feel good. I honestly feel sorry for the group that was cheating because clearly they needed to boost their self esteem. It’s ridiculous that they denied cheating after I pointed out the absurd amount of questions that they had gotten right. From a young age my father taught me that dignity and honor are the most important things in life. When I was just 18, through hard work and dedication, I was able to gain access to my six figure trust fund. Before I left for college my father told me, “son, you’re the smartest person in the world. You’re destined to do great things in life and no one can stop you. If you EVER lose to anyone at bar trivia it must be because they cheated. There is no other possibility.” So clearly I knew that this group could not have known all those answers because I didn’t know them. If these scumbags are ever allowed to set foot in the Lions Head again, my father will be EXTREMELY upset, and you do not want that.

Superb neighborhood bar for NY sports nights, lots of TVs, fantastic bar food and an amazing beer and draft selection including something from every family of ales. The raspberry cream sour on the menu was a delight.

This is easily the best bar around Columbia and truly an UWS gem. Great trivia night on Wednesdays, too. However, this last Wednesday, the trivia host and a bartender accused my squad of cheating in trivia since we were actually doing well for once. I didn’t appreciate these accusations, nor did I appreciate the guy who complained that we were “cheating”. Yeah… this guy couldn’t handle getting outsmarted and outplayed by some seniors in college (I’m gonna guess he goes to Columbia law). Crazy to think that a group of 6 men that all watch football don’t go 9/9 on Madden covers (we only needed 8 of them). And might as well assume that we don’t listen to Biz Markie, No Doubt, or the Cure while you’re at it. Maybe assume that we won’t successfully get a question about Wrigley Field correct even though I am from Chicago, too? But I digress. I didn’t appreciate people thinking we didn’t know our stuff solely on the basis of being among the youngest in the room. Will I continue to go here? Absolutely. And will I continue to buy $30 pitchers of Bud Light for my table? Definitely, despite having a college student level of disposable income. It is a tragedy that a blemish got placed on our great performance in what will be one of my last times at lion’s head trivia night, and I can guarantee that if we were cheating (which we were not), then we would not have lost on the final question. (New York trivia league– if you don’t want people having multiple phones out, don’t put a “just watch” option on your trivia page, for that implies that team members can have their phone out to also follow along on questions). Thank you lion’s head, and I’ll see you all next Wednesday. Edit: Not sure where the throwing up on a jacket story came from. That did NOT happen… it was 7:30pm on a Wednesday. Keep in mind, these are actual adults making up stories about a group of college guys that beat them in trivia. Pretty funny, honestly.

Cool vibe with college bar atmosphere. The wings were pretty good and the beer menu is ok. The bartenders and servers were really helpful even when it was busy!

Google
wow Wanted to try the new brunch. Only been offering it a few days and had a new chef today so I will cut them some slack. The French toast was awesome and the coffee is served in a French Press which is really nice. The combo breakfast is huge with lots of meat and eggs. The doughnuts are made to order and hot, but they are cake doughnuts so if you prefer the light style doughnuts like Krispy Kreme you will not care for these as much. These are great cake doughnuts, but they are cake. Overall it was nice, but it is a bar not a breakfast place. We will go back again for the French Toast, big combo breakfast and the French Press coffee for sure. Check out all of our reviews. If we do not like it we do no review it so all of the ones you see are places that are fantastic. Follow us if you like. We had over 7 million views in 2021 and we thank you for that. We don't get paid, we just love to eat. Be sure to click on "RobH" at the top of this review to see all of them and to follow us if you like good food and shopping

Google
It's what one would expect from a neighborhood sports bar. One item of note: it's on a list of Boston Celtics sports bars in NYC. It's not a Celtics bar. It is a Knicks bar ... so still great. I had a friend from Boston visiting and thought it would be fun to see Knicks v Celtics at a NYC Celtics bar. Oh well. Once again... don't believe everything you read online :-)

Nice spot in the area. I was sold when I saw fried Oreos on the menu. Hailey L. Makes very strong drinks, definitely recommend.

Google
I love this place! I come here often with work friends or by myself and get the Teriyaki wings and tater tots. Their teriyaki sauce is the best around! The service is good and the outdoor seating areas are beautiful.
google avatar

Yelp
Their wings are excellent. In fact, I might go out on a limb and say they might be the best wings north of 96th St.

Yelp
Nice, local watering hole that has lots of screens for watching a game and good bar food specials. Happy hour is pretty popular and a good social hour. I don't think that I've ever used the restroom here, so I cannot speak on that. Inside the bar is lit much like a dive bar, dim and dark wood interior. It seems like an easy place to become a regular, if you're so inclined. Their wings, fries and basic fare are pretty good. Service is friendly, but they give you space. Gratuity is automatically added to your bill, keep that in mind. This is not a destination spot but a good, casual place to enjoy a drink and a chat.

Yelp
Don't call yourself New Yorks Mets bar then put one of the most important games of the year on the smallest tv in a corner

Suyash S.

Yelp
Great bar, fun atmosphere. The bartenders are amazing, especially Callie. Would definitely recommend to all of my friends

Hana E.

Yelp
Such a fun bar! Great drinks, great prices! Also does trivia :) special shoutout to our bartender Callie who was so amazing!! So friendly, so attentive, the greatest recommendations, and made such great drinks! Thank you Callie!!! Can't wait to come back!

Yelp
Such a fun little place with great drinks!! Loved our bartender Callie! So knowledgeable and kind and even... breathtaking? Would definitely come here again

Yelp
Very rude manager wouldn't listen about how I ordered delivery on their website. She refused to believe that I successfully ordered a delivery order. Screenshot from their website with delivery option. She refused to cancel my order and said I needed to call their vendor myself.

Yelp
This is such a nice bar. It was great to come before and after the pandemic. They have such a great outdoor seating area and the inside also has such a nice feel as well. The servers and bartenders here have always been so courteous and friendly. I never tried their food but they do have a menu with burgers, wings, nachos, hot dogs.... One day I will try. The drinks have a beautiful presentation. They have about 10-15 types of beer. IPA, two rotating local beers, and the rest are your standards (I came before the pandemic and noticed Miller Highlife is gone for now - but hey, everything else is nice).

Yelp
Went to a happy hour at Lion's Head Tavern on Friday evening. A solid pub with strong drinks, cold beer, and tasty bar food options. Quality: A fun pub with above average bar food. I wish the draft menu was a little more diverse, but they had enough options to satisfy the entire group. All the food I tried was delicious, and some of the things I didn't try got excellent reviews. You can't go wrong with Buffalo Wings or Tater Tots. The Fried Buffalo Chicken Sandwich and the Pulled Pork, were also hits with the group. Quantity: No issue with beer pours and food comes in shareable portions. Value: $7-$11 for Draft Beers. $30 for 20 Buffalo Wings. $9 for Tater Tots. Ambiance: Lion's Head Tavern is located in the Morningside area of Manhattan. Inside it is a pretty typical packed pub, with the walls covered with memorabilia and televisions. The table setup is definitely made to maximize the space and get in as many guests inside as possible. Outside they had multiple sheltered areas, one of which we sat in. The area surrounding the pub had a lot of characters, so expect to see some interesting activity. Crowd: Packed inside and out, I was surprised about how hard many of the customers were going early on Friday. Service: A little slow on a busy Friday evening. Parking: Tough parking on a busy street.

Yelp
Love this place. Burgers are great and the best bartender has dreads. Polite and will become your best friend. Love him he's the best bartender ever.

Yelp
Stopped in during the holiday break, and what a nice, easy place. Please promote your bartender Megan to restaurant manager!! She worked that bar alone, and made sure to connect with every customer that walked in. The drinks were fast, and she gave great suggestions on food. Also shout out to Richie, who took over for Megan, he had an amazing playlist, set all the vibes. I will be coming back!!

Yelp
Was here back in September on a Monday night! I got the cheeseburger cooked MEDUIM and few Coors lite , it's a METS Bar mostly. The food isn't as bad ..it's pretty decent , but I came back like Late April(28th) and got a Miller and shot special! For $9 I ordered it again , the next time I ordered it the glass was smaller . I then to proceed to close my tab but I guess they were training a new guy , who would take more the 30 minutes to find my card and cash me out . I just wanted to pay as I go ! But he insisted I give him my card. I like to make it easy to as I've been in the industry for 30 years myself. I also got charge double tax on my card . So I hope I can leave cash next time so this doesn't happy again . I probably be back . But only w/ cash ....

Jim B.

Yelp
Great pub food spot. Atmosphere, good food, beer list, menu, friendly staff, decent music. Cannot complain about anything.

Yelp
Went first time on a Monday night. Great, relaxed atmosphere, great Mets memorabilia, lots of screens. Friendly bartender- good drinks. I'll be back.

Yelp
This was one of my favorite neighborhood places that I used to be somewhat of a regular at. Good selection of beer, seasonal cocktails, and a great chicken sandwich. Between that and comfortable outdoor seating it was a great place to grab a drink to catch up with some friends. Somewhat disappointed today by the attitude of the hostess (or maybe manager?) who interrupted twice while I was asking a server about the music (lately they seem to have been playing lout music indoors earlier than they have in the past, which isn't my favorite on a lazy Saturday). She interrupts twice with "if it's not your vibe it's not your vibe", and "it's Saturday, live a little!". Doesn't feel like the way I'd want to be treated at a neighborhood place as a regular, so I will think twice about returning.

Yelp
This restaurant is the most disappointing thing since my son; he was arrested for a variety of heinous crimes in 1985 and I'd rather eat 35 years worth of prison food than eat at this wretched excuse of a restaurant again. Things got off to a bad start when my table received our drinks. The mango margarita was inoffensive but far too sweet for my pallet, it's probably enjoyable if you have no spine. The Gin and Juice was ok but tasted more like pickle juice than the advertised cucumber juice. The Ms. Fat Booty tasted like a liquified form of Rudy Giuliani's toe jam, I really don't know what they were going for with this one. We had a good 30 MINUTES to think about what we had done before receiving the appetizer. We ordered the nachos, they were practically cold and tasted like garbage. The jalapeños were few and far between and were not spicy. it was downright insulting. The moment my food arrived was one of sheer panic and immeasurable disappointment. I ordered a veggie burger and the patty was clearly prefab and microwaved. They also stacked about half a dozen raw onions in the burger which was just disgusting.the French fries were good but it was hardly any consolation, no compromise is worth the culinary equivalent to being stabbed in the head The final insult was the bill at a whopping $198 for six people. There are better bars/restaurants down the street. The managers of this establishment should probably stop whatever it is they're attempting to do and reflect on their misdeeds every day for about seven years. Only then may they have a chance at redemption from this terrible excuse of a restaurant.

Yelp
Lion's Head is a pretty good bar. It has plenty of TVs for sports fans. This is also a good bar just for hanging and talking. It has some food. Service is pretty fast here. It has some pretty good prices for beer. It's crappy beer but still, it's cheap. Miller is about $3 or so. It also has many beers from local breweries. There's a small food menu. It's mostly fried bar crap. The kind of stuff like tater tots. It's a good bar for beer. It's hard to beat the prices. The food isn't as good so eat before you go there.

Yelp
I hate to give this place 1 star because it used to be so great. A sports bar with cheap beer and a good neighborhood vibe (and no college crowd). But once they started having a cocktail menu this place has gone downhill fast. Nobody wants go there for a cocktail--there are plenty of places in the neighborhood for that. We want the relaxed sports bar vibe. I was there recently and counted SEVEN staff members and maybe like 10-15 guests (for comparison, I went to another bar down the street on a Friday night and they were packed and had 3 servers and nobody waited long for food or drink service--and their product justifies their price). I've talked to some of the staff before and they are all soooo nice, but some were standing around like they had no idea what to do and they seemed miserable (probably because there were too many of them on--hi, cut your staff when it's slow... can't be good for tips either). It's no wonder people are flocking to other neighborhood spots. I walked down Amsterdam last Sunday and it was the ONLY place that wasn't busy. You know it's bad when people would rather eat and drink at Amity Hall (gross). I chatted with a regular while we were all waiting to be served and was told that most of the regulars don't come around anymore... that really says something to me. When the faithful leave... you're doing something wrong. Bring back the old Lion's Head, stop trying to be a cocktail bar, start treating the staff with some dignity, and maybe you'll be busy again one day.

Yelp
A nice chill sports bar in the UWS. Great beer selection, surprisingly good mixed drinks, and just an overall good vibe. Food is also pretty good. The bartenders are super cool and friendly. Great place to go with a large group of friends on your way to a lit night out on the weekend.

Yelp
The manger and owner is very disrespectful people and kitchen manger is very disrespectful I waited for food it come out be cold my hamburger was cold and my drinks was warm I will never come back to place again I waiting for my food for an hour and half because the cook was busy eating there no one else in the kitchen
google avatar

Randi G.

Yelp
This is a solid option for a few things: beer, music, sports watching, and solid food options As someone not into the sports watching, the fact that others are there to do it doesn't make the space off-putting. You can still hear the music - and it's not so loud you can't hear the person next to you talk. They have a great rotating beer selection. And can you really hate on a place that serves tatchos? No, no you cannot.
google avatar

CJ R.

Yelp
My favorite place in the neighborhood for wings and fries. I have been ordering regularly on UberEats for some time but have yet to go visit in person. Keep up the great work and I'll be by soon.
google avatar

Gyl-Maria R.

Yelp
I really wanted to try their wings. Staff of 2 seems overwhelmed. Service is slow for what seems a popular place. First and last time.
google avatar

Yelp
Brian is amazing So hospitable Love this place And food to 2am great Great time Try fried pickles and amazing margaritas

Yelp
Stopped in with my friend for drinks and a little food a couple of months ago. We sat outside and had a great experience! The bartender Justin got us set up, and also went above and beyond to welcome my friends dog with attention and dog treats! Great food and drinks and excellent hospitality by the staff!
google avatar

Lexi F.

Yelp
This is a college bar. If you're in college and enjoy being called "babe" by every man in the room, hang out here. If you do not, order take out. Wings are delicious. Staff is friendly enough. This is a college bar.

Yelp
I and two people went for dinner and drinks. Excellent drinks, dinner, service. When I got home, I realized that I had left my iPad Pro. I called IMMEDIATELY and asked about it. His response: "Nothing has been turned in." My sister walked back to the restaurant and another group had been seated. My sister spotted my case and, thankfully, it was passed to her. She called to let me know that she had my iPad Pro. In fewer than twelve minutes, I called the restaurant, again, and let them know that I had just called about my iPad. His immediate response, "Nothing has been turned in." THEY DIDN'T EVEN LOOK FOR IT!!! I said to the person on the phone, "My sister is there now, and she's found my iPad on your premises." His response, "Okay. Good. Have a nice evening." Although it was my fault that I left it, the staff at The Lion Head Tavern could have at least LOOKED for it, rather than waiting for someone to turn it in. Who's gonna turn in a six-week old iPad Pro, keyboard, and carrying case? We've been there several times. We try to shop locally, and support local restaurants, especially since the advent of the pandemic. Sadly, we won't be revisiting The Lion Head Tavern. Nor will I encourage others to patronize the venue. I'll probably encourage people NOT to patronize the venue. The several hundred dollars that ice spent there would have been more than offset by the almost $1,000.00 cost of my iPad Pro that they wouldn't walk 100 paces to look for.

Yelp
I absolutely LOVE THIS place. My boyfriend first took me here and now the best part is that he lives down the block from here the bartenders are great! And the happy hour is awesome!! Every time my boyfriend comes here he gets their quesadilla and when he is eating that thing boy: that is the only time he is quiet LOL. No but seriously, the food is great and the space is just warm and welcoming. Cannot wait for our next happy hour date

Steve D.

Yelp
Good food , good drinks, good staff. A great neighborhood spot. The wings are justly famous and the burgers and other sandwiches are good too. They have a nice ever changing list of specialty cocktails for when you are in a rut and need some variety.
google avatar

Yelp
Let me tell you, Lion's Head Tavern was truly outstanding. Very comfortable, clean, and beyond friendly. Every single item that we have ordered was super fresh and flavorful. Wonderful enthusiastic service. Try this place out you won't regret it!

Yelp
Stopped by to have a few drinks. Bar tender was too busy doing shots with some scetchy looking people. Scary neighborhood, too. We left.

Yelp
Stopped in for a few drinks on a Wednesday at around 6 because we were having dinner in the area. Although it's a Mets bar (I'm not into baseball but I'm a Yankee fan by default, since my entire family is), it still had good vibes. Happy hour is until 8 PM - you can get $5 well drinks, $6 wine, and $2 off beer (which comes out to $5-$7). Our bartender was Nikki, and she was super nice. It's a shame we didn't get to try the food, since it had such good reviews. I probably wouldn't come back, just because it's so far uptown and I'm never in this area, but I'm still glad I discovered it.

Yelp
My wife and I have left New York City: the parking tickets, the grisly, slow decay of the MTA, and the dawning realization that we were never going to be wealthy enough to own our own place within an hour of anything we remotely like caused us to flee westward like so many before us. But oh, how we miss Lion's Head Tavern. The fried chicken sandwich. The tots. The fried pickles. The extremely reasonable happy hour specials (and also relatively reasonable non-happy-hour prices). The capable bartenders. The fact that a Mets bar in upper Manhattan is mostly empty much of the time, especially when we needed to take a break and go to the bar. No disrespect to the Mets: honestly, Lion's Head caused me to start rooting for them more often than not, even though I'm largely sports-indifferent and sports-illiterate. But let's face it, 109th and Amsterdam is solid Yankee country, and may Odin bless the Lion's Head Tavern for sticking to its Queens-loving guns and being a low-maintenance-feeling (but deceptively high quality) bar and eatery in an increasingly high-maintenance neighborhood. Also, did you know that unlike other cats, lions are very social animals? They live in called prides of about 30 lions. A pride consists of up to three males, a dozen related females, and their young.
google avatar

Mick P.

Yelp
5 stars in honor of Brenda L. who eats the wings from here for breakfast, lunch AND dinner! But really though, they're so good and omg the disco fries too!!! They're the best I've had ever in NYC (and I get them whenever and wherever possible, so I think I'd know). Pitchers of any beer really is the way to go. And JJ is the best, thanks for everything! PS: someone please find a rehab facility for Brenda's wing addiction. Thanks in advance.

Yelp
I love the Lions Den after 10pm.... I enjoy grabbing dinner nearby at Thai Market, Sura sushi, Osteris or Marlow and coming to the Lion after for a series of drinks. It's a chill, regular bar - sports TV screen and simple classic drinks. It's been around for a while... a staple of the Upper Upper West
google avatar

Cyrus P.

Yelp
Good divey/hipster bar for the neighborhood. Funky menus, good hot dogs, nice beer selection and affordable. Service was decent, sports on TV's are perfect for the atmosphere.
google avatar

Yelp
Great place for burgers and beer. Their burgers are the best and this is the only place I go to for a hearty burger. Highly recommend.

Yelp
Came for the Mets game because of the 7 Line Army. Great food, great service, great experience!

Yelp
Amazing atmosphere, everyone I met there was so friendly. The food was good, but the workers and patrons were what made the experience so lovely.
google avatar

Yelp
I went for the first time and the food was very good for a dive bar, the drinks were cold and the service was great. It will be my new neighborhood go to stop to watch the game and have a great time. Enjoy

Yelp
Found this place on Yelp, been back several times. Wings are phenomenal. Awesome dive with a low-key feel.

Yelp
Serving food until late this is a great bar. Not too pricey. Their wings are decent and the poutine great. Worth the trip.

Yelp
Whoever runs this place loves a few simple things: *Comic books (see the cover of the menu) *The Mets (check out the drink board) *Food that would appeal to a child (see...well me) *Cheap beer The first time I walked into lions head, I was not expecting this kind of place (maybe just a regular pub. can't remember), but I have to say I've been super happy swinging by on my way home from work for a while now. Why? Well, mostly the cheap beer (3$ highlife's or 14$ pitchers of Miller lite). Oh yeah, and they have loaded tater tots (11$)...and porkroll (8$), which for some inexplicable reason they call "taylor ham" whatever the F that is (shots fired North Jersey, what are you going to do about it?). If you're looking for a place to unwind that happens to be near a college but isn't full of college bros (winning), you could do a lot worse than the lions head.
google avatar

Blaine M.

Yelp
This place is great. TV's at every angle guarantees that you'll see the game you want. The bartenders are nice and very responsive. They have great prices on food and drinks;specials daily. Try the Nachos with Tots and pulled pork. It's excellent; enough to share.
google avatar

Pia V.

Yelp
Came here a few times, one of them being Thanksgiving night after having dinner. My sister was in town and we decided we should go out and have a drink. The bar was decorated with "Turkey hands" and there were a few small parties there. It was great that it was even open, let alone having a fun Thanksgiving feel. There is ample seating, and a few of the tables are close to outlets so you can charge your phone, if that is something you look for in a bar -- I know I appreciate it. Lion's Head is your regular neighborhood bar that is there for you, even during the holidays. The service is good, and so are the drinks -- all for a very decent price tag. I haven't tried the food yet though, so that I will update my review for, once I do.
google avatar

Daphne C.

Yelp
Gross place with TERRIBLE service. First off, when we ordered food, it took them an HOUR to serve us (and only after we asked them AGAIN to bring out our food). After that, none of us had the patience to order anything else, but the bartender was deliberately rude calling us out for sharing a dish (which by the way was large enough that it's supposed to be shared). On top of that, my friend asked for water and the bartender refused to serve him... which I'm pretty sure is illegal and IRRESPONSIBLE to deny water to your customers at a BAR. Literally will never come back here again... don't waste your time
google avatar

Daniel M.

Yelp
Love this place. Lion's head is a great spot to grab a drink, while watching the game. It hits that sweet spot of being very rarely empty, but always having room to fit a small group. I generally grab a table with some friends in the back if I'm looking to post up for the night. A little bit further than some other "Columbia bars", the crowd is a mix of undergraduates, graduates, and people who live in the neighborhood. You very rarely get a "frat" crowd, but it isn't unheard off. The beer selection is decent and very well priced. I use to come here for dollar beer night fairly often, which was always fun. Food wise, its nothing special but you can get all of your bar favorites to go with your drink. Will continue to come back!
google avatar

Nicole K.

Yelp
Love this neighborhood bar... however wondering why they do not serve LIONS HEAD BEER??! Seems like a no brainer. But it's still a great spot with terrific burgers.

Yelp
My Bf and I's go-to spot for lunch and dinner especially when his Saturday College SEC games are on. The Drink Specials are great from beer selections Pitchers to mimosas ( only during brunch on weekends). Trivia every 1st tuesdays of the month. I love the fact that they have a full bar and kitchen Ive had everything on the menu from the burger to nachos , tots to fingers and wings and fries are on point. Nikki curated Cocktails and she is a great Bartender as the rest of the staff Awesome group of people
