Little Arthur’s - Review - Capitol Hill - Denver - The Infatuation

"There was a lot of social media commotion when Little Arthur’s announced that its pizza would be the most expensive in town. (The Reddit thread devoted to the $40 pies is a case study in being Mad Online.) But here’s the thing—the pizza is really freaking good. The crackly crust,  cheese sourced from a sixth generation dairy farm in Naples, and flakey sea salt finish is worth the pretty penny, especially when you consider the 20-inch pizzas feed four. There are a few more hitches, though. Their hours sometimes fluctuate, you’ll have to battle the beer crowds inside Out of the Barrel Taproom where Little Arthur’s is located, and they do tend to run out of menu items. But hey, whatever you get here is going to be great, even if it’s not what you’d planned." - Allyson Reedy

The Best Pizza in Denver

"Bursting onto the Denver dining scene with a hugely successful pop-up hoagie shop, AJ Shreffler is now running the kitchen at Cap Hill beer bar Out of the Barrel, where he’s slinging not only sandwiches but pies as gargantuan as they are gorgeous. As the famous quote goes, simplicity is the ultimate sophistication; in this case, every last ingredient exudes integrity — crunchy-tender crust, topflight cheeses, fresh herbs, Sicilian olive oil, and all." - Gigi Sukin, Paul Albani-Burgio, Ruth Tobias

Usually top notch quality but didn’t hit this time. Pizza seemed under cooked and didn’t look like the photo for the weekly special. Barely any pepperoni and didn’t put sesame seed crust like it was supposed to have. They also added the cheese-wiz on the to go fries which made them soft and soggy by the time we picked up and got home. We got there at our pickup time and definitely seemed like it had been sitting out for a bit as the pizza wasn’t very hot (only live about 10 minutes away).

Google
Disregard the keyboard warriors... You get what you pay for and what youre paying for is one of the best cheesesteaks in the Mile High. Yes, the prices are high. Yes, the quality of food matches the price. This place is a neighborhood staple and complements the area greatly. The beer is also fantastic and they churn out weekly pizza specials. Highly recommend. Also, you can get a cheessteak and fries for $20 on Wednesday and it is more than enough to split between two people.

My expectations for Little Arthur’s were sky-high — and it still managed to surpass them. We ordered a pepperoni pizza and a cooper sharp cheesesteak. The cheesesteak was, without a doubt, the best I’ve ever had. Not just in Denver, but anywhere. The freshly made sesame seed roll was fantastic and the ratio of meat to cheese was perfect. The chef came to our table and let us know the pizza was going to come out about 10 minutes late because they overcooked the first one, which was no big deal to us. He came back around a few minutes later with a complimentary pepperoncini wedge salad, which was a very nice gesture. The salad was bomb by the way, very garlicky and creamy, and the addition of bread crumbs made from the leftover sesame seed rolls added a great textural component. Lastly, the pizza came out and I could tell just by looking at it that it was going to be great. The quality of ingredients really stuck out here—the tomato sauce tasted simple and fresh, the mozzarella was delicious, and the crust was on point. It had almost no flop, despite the slices being huge. It was crunchy with just the right amount of char and chew. Unquestionably a top-5 pizza in Denver. I’ve seen quite a few people complain about the prices here, but we found those concerns to be overblown. At face value, it seems expensive, but the portions are huge. The cheesesteak is big enough to share, unless you’re very hungry. The pizza is massive and would comfortably feed four. We spent $68 with tip, but it is going to end up being two meals for my wife and I. For this quality of food, that’s absolutely worth the price tag. Absolutely fantastic, we’ll be back soon to show some friends. I’m also dying to try the whiz wit now that I’ve had the cooper sharp.

Google
Little Arthur’s is pricey, but the portions are out of control and the ingredients speak for themselves. Legit one of my top ten favorite meals in Denver. The food is thoughtful, intentional, and well seasoned. A single pie can easily feed three people. A sandwich easily is split for two. If you decide not to check this place out on the price point alone, you’re only doing yourself a disservice.

Google
AJ's pizzas are fantastic. Thin, crispy, the flavors are above and beyond for even the most simple pie. The cheese steak is perfect. Melt in your mouth, flavor-explosion, comfort food. The bread is homemade every day. It's the only good semolina roll I've found in Denver. Specials are always great. Meatball, provolone, broccoli rabe hoagie was amazing. Do not miss the desserts. Get a salad. Everything is special here. AJ is super personable and his staff is great. When you get to know him, he makes you feel like you're his cousin. The food is east coast comfort food to me. It's spot on. It's not cheap but it's worth the money. AJ pours his heart and soul into this and doesn't skimp on ingredient quality or his staff. Kudos to fighting the good fight and I'll always pay extra for that soul. The bar itself that this place is in isn't my favorite. It's a little tight and always crowded. Beers aren't great either. I come for Little Arthurs. Pics from a takeout order which I only did cause I broke my back.

Google
Fantastic food and service. Some of the best hoagies I've had since moving here-maybe the best honestly. Worth the price, you get a ton of food. Highly recommend.

Google
Couldn’t say I loved the food. I liked the pizza and I liked the cheesesteak but everything was entirely too salty the $20 deal was great cause i remember having a $35 cheesesteak and that’s just insane. The guy that took my order was kind of rude and then I think he heard I called him rude and was better towards the end. Although I don’t think he was apart of the Little Arthur’s group Packed place. But my all three of the cheesesteaks were too salty.

Google
The best sandwich I have had in a long time. The bread is perfect, the meat and seasoning perfect. Large servings make it easy to share and keep costs down. The quality of a sandwich is largely dependent on the passion of the person making it. I can only guess the poor reviews are from a bad employee who is no longer making food there? But I would not listen to them at all. This place delivers some good quality sandwiches.

Yelp
First time patron and cheesesteak lover...incredible portion...half is larger than most restaurant's full 12"...best tasting I've had in Denver...fries portion was great and unique kind of giant steak fries...get the pepperoncini sauce, delicious...went early for our pick-up and the atmosphere and patrons were great...had a few micro-brews while we waited and they were both really good...I don't understand the negative reviews...got 2 sandwiches and 2 fries for 2 people and we have a full sandwich and full fries left for a complete 2nd meal so we're now understanding of the prices...top notch Parking: we were there after 6pm and the meters stop at 6 so free street parking at that time...had to park almost a block away ...looked like limited parking lot parking in back

Yelp
Man I really wanted to like this place and I'm writing this after my 4th visit. TLDR is that they've gone super downhill since their pop up days. -$40 margarita pizza was honestly super average. -Meatball sub came out cold and my huge pet peeve is unmelted or cold cheese. Yeah cold bread and cold cheese. -cheese sticks were cold inside It's the little things that matter and whoever works the kitchen here must legitimately not give a shit. So after giving this spot try after try I'm over it. Time to take my business somewhere that cares about the actual product. Really a bummer since I genuinely loved the pop up and want to support small businesses.

Yelp
Little Arthur's did not live up to the hype. Service was very poor with rude cashier and a forced 20% tip because of a "broken" machine. The turkey sandwich was nothing special and not worth the price. Same with the Philly, which was way too salty and almost inedible. If we are paying $24 for a sandwich, I would expect much more.

Yelp
Little arthur is the definition of artisan hoagies! This place had been on my radar for so long and I'm kicking myself. I didn't get over there sooner! They are a pop-up so you've got to follow them on social media to keep up with where they will be from week to week. You can often find them partnered up with a local brewery, slinging some of the best Hoagies, you will ever wrap your mouth around! Yes, they are on the Pierre side, but anyone who ever tried them has zero complaints about the price point. He makes all of his own bread, pastries, etc.... Uses almost exclusively, locally, sourced, meats, cheeses, and produce the quality is so noticeable it really isn't even a question in my mind. If the value is there! I would gladly pay $30 for one of their hoagies, it literally fed three people! Some of the best flavors ever! And do not sleep on the cookies... The lemon ricotta cookies is something I crave regularly! And that chocolate chip sea salt... Mamma Mia!!!

Yelp
Food is decent but way overpriced. At Angelo's in Philly this exact same steak costs $14, which is TEN dollars less than little Arthur's. I could understand some DNVR inflation but not this much. Plenty of cheaper, better pizza places around Denver as well. $8 for fries? I don't care if they're fresh cut, not justified. On top of all this, you're expected to tip for the food that's handed to you without any additional service.

Yelp
Finally had my cheesesteak at Little Arthur's. I have been following this pop-up online for sometime, living in Fort Collins it's not the easiest to get down to Denver for dinner, however I finally pulled it off last night. The brewery in Cap Hill where the restaurant resides is nice, service was acceptable, but I did have a few issues with the cheesesteak. First the good(hence the 4 star rating): excellent bread, high-quality meat, perfectly melted Cooper Sharp cheese, perfect amount of onions. The bad: overly salted the beef and the price, $24. For that price I would have expected to have my di** blown off, and sadly it's still there. I recently returned from Philadelphia, where I am originally from and had a cheesesteak at arguably the best place in United States, Angelo's Pizzeria. The price of the cheesesteak there was $14 now I know cost of Denver food prices and cost of work affects ultimate restaurant prices, but $24? Is Little Arthur's steak $10 better than Angelo's. On another good note i did see the pizza, served at another table around me, it looked phenomenal. I will be back for the pie and probably another cheesesteak and hold my nose as I pay the bill( I'm a sucker when it comes to supporting local businesses). PS they charged me $2.69 for hot peppers SMH

Yelp
I've been trying to get my hands on a little Arthur's hoagie for weeks now! Finally got in the queue in time, and it was so worth the wait! We got the aunt Brenda with chopped meatballs, garlic, spinach, peppers, on a perfect hoagie roll. So delicious!!

Yelp
This spot is a pop-up only which makes it a bit hard to track down. Follow them on social media to find out when and where their pop-ups are. My husband and I shared: - The Art Pops (chopped cheese) - Grandma Pie - Tomato Pie - Lemon Ricotta Cookie Everything was good, but the hoagie is what stands out the most. It was fantastic. It's hard to find a good hoagie when you're not in the northeast, but this place nails it. They are kind of expensive, but I'm glad I tried it.

Yelp
Great pop up! I've seen them sell out every single time but finally had a chance to try them this past week! They are located in Sunny's a few times a month. Vibe: Hard to tell as I took the food to go! But its just tables and chairs which honestly that's all you need when your food is great. Service: The lady at the register was super friendly! Didn't interact with anyone else Food: Here's the deal - the sandwhich is expensive! It was $25 for one hoagie. However, it is a big portion and the ingredients are clearly fresh. The bread is made that same day too. I got the chopped cheese sandwich (The Arty Bucco) and it was great! A little salty for my taste but otherwise, pretty good! The grandma slices were fantastic! And so were the cookies if a little hard but nothing a little milk couldn't fix I cannot wait for a Philly cheesesteak hoagie so I can try that one!

Yelp
Make sure to try the whipped ricotta and cheesesteak--they were quite tasty! The sandwich is enormous, and the pricing is reasonable given the high-quality ingredients.
google avatar

Yelp
The food is amazing always hot and fresh. The cookies are good as well. Service is ok. Once you check in and pay take a sit and get ready for a good hoagie. Once the food came fairly fast and some times it take some time but they are cooking it fresh, most definitely worth it.

Yelp
I can tell you right off the bat, that this place is expensive when you're talking about sandwiches. This is not your neighborhood Subway level prices. But you get what you pay for. You are getting artisan chef crafted hoagies for this price. And you taste every penny. I was so impressed by the quality of the ingredients. Even just the bread tasted elite. Of course I couldn't just stop at the hoagie. I also tried their tomato pie and I was blown away. The tomato pie completely changed my view on tomato pie. I've had tomato pie before and I didn't quite care for it. But when I tell you, this was unbelievable. The focaccia bread was so crispy yet fluffy. The Parmesan grated on top was beautiful and you could just taste the fresh herbs bursting out of the tomato. When I tell you, I did not want to end. It was served room temp and not cold; which I found is now my tomato pie preference. I was so sad once I finally finished it. Both the tomato pie and the sandwich kept well the next day. It was so much food that I could not finish it. And when I threw them in the oven, they were not soggy, but we're just perfect. The tomato pie, of course is gonna have a slight bit of moisture because the tomato and the bread are touching but when I put it in the oven for a minute to crisp up a bit, it came out just right. And I can't even tell you about how that Apple olive oil cake was hitting. I took one bite and was stunned. The flavors of cinnamon and sugar were just popping off of my pallet. I took it home and warmed it up in the oven for a special treat. my only request is that they sell this by the loaf. I went back the following week to try the grandma slice that was a hit too! Overall I'd recommend their Sunday morning and uncle paulie hoagies! Also heads up, be prepared to wait in line at least 30 mins

Yelp
My wife and I decided to try out Little Arthurs for a snack. We bought a couple beers (12oz beers are $9/ea) and a $20.00 cheesesteak sandwich. The beer was good, but overpriced and served in champagne flutes for some reason. The sandwich was simply inedible. It was so salty that we thought it was a prank at first. The fact that all the ingredients looked like they were put into a food processor resulting in an unappetizing mush really didn't help matters. The cashier/server just chuckled when I mentioned that the sandwich was way oversalted and went on her way. Needless to say, we won't be returning. There are a lot of great restaurants in Denver. This isn't one of them.

Yelp
These hoagies are FIRE! They are currently running a pop-up out of Sunny's. To score a hoagie, follow them on Instagram to watch for the schedule to be posted on Monday morning. They seem to sell out in an hour or two so stay sharp! You will get a pre-order slot for Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday evening. When you go to pick up your hoag, expect to wait a bit as they make it (enjoy the free scents and sounds of sizzling meat). Each hoagie is $26, so unfortunately not something I can go after every week, but they are super filling and worth the price! The hoagie roll is the most perfect thing ever. The chopped cheese sandwich I tried was filled with a generous serving of ground beef, pickles, mushrooms, onions, and an unidentifiable cheesy sauce. When you pick up, you can add a drink or cookie. (I tried a cookie--it was good but a little chewy/nothing to write a letter home about. I will probably pass next time unless there's a flavor I'm really excited about). Anyway, get yourself one of these pre-order slots next Monday; you will be transported to Philly (i.e., hoagie heaven)!

Yelp
Damn good! Been following the stories of these amazing hoagies and finally got my hands on one. I reserved my American Wit Philly and boy was it fresh and delicious. Price is a bit steep, but it is a hefty sandwich. It was full of steak and cheesy gooeyness! Everything you want from a cheesesteak! I grabbed an old school Ricotta cookie while there and I know want a tray more! Holy deliciousness! I'm excited for him to get his food truck going, but cool he has a regular pop up spot at Sunny's right now. My pictures were rushed because I just needed to eat!

Yelp
Don't walk- run to this place! From the beer selection to the Altius Farms Greens salad (which is so simple and so delicious) to the Crab Fries, the House Bread with olive oil and summer tomatoes to the Eggplant parm hoagie and the pizza- this place is amazing. JP, Ezra, AJ, Sean do a great job and they really love what they are doing!! I could go on and on about how much I love this place but I think you get the gist! Oh! And don't forget the desserts- especially AJ's mom's chocolate layered cake! This place is fantastic and I haven't tried half the stuff! Great job Little Arthur's!

Yelp
BEST HOAGIES IN DENVER, PERIOD I hope AJ sticks around because he knows what he's doing.

Yelp
So happy to finally get to try Little Arthurs Hoagies! I've tried a handful of times but they are always sold out. They are currently doing pop ups at Sunny's which is only a few blocks away so my husband, baby, pup, and I were able to walk over and then take them to the park to eat. The hoagies are a bit on the pricier side however they are HUGE... definitely shareable or you may have leftovers for the next day like we did. They surprisingly warmed up pretty well in the oven. Even though we had a scheduled pickup time we still had to wait about 15 minutes since they make them on the spot. But they were worth the wait!

Michael T.

Yelp
These are hands down the BEST cheesesteaks in Denver. Ya - they are pricey at $24, but it's shaved Rib-Eye!!! SOOOO good! Not to mention his sesame bread is amazing. They're easily split, or two meals, I can't finish a whole one! Check out the cookies too; the lemon ricotta are yummy!!!
google avatar

JJ C.

Yelp
One of the best sandwiches I've ever eaten. I don't need to say more but YELP requires 85 characters
google avatar

Kelly O.

Yelp
There's no way this guy doesn't have 8million 5 star reviews. Maybe there's an unwritten rule that you don't share how amazing his hoagies are and I just don't know since I'm a new fan. My apologies if so. But damn. I'm not a religious broad but if heaven existed, it would be scoring a hoagie from one of the pop ups, getting home and eating it in the tub while it's still warm.
google avatar

Easton H.

Yelp
I've had a few different sandwiches and none of them miss. However the cheesesteak is easily one of the best things you can buy in all of Denver. Honestly top 3 cheesesteak of all time for me, up there with John's Roast Pork and Angelo's. The service has always been great. The chocolate chip cookies are absurdly good. Prices are steep but for the size and quality you get what you pay for. Definitely a spot worth going out of your way for.

Chris B.

Yelp
Some of the best hoagies and food you can find. Best cheesesteaks in Denver by far but everything they make is awesome. Don't miss out!
google avatar

Scott W.

Yelp
This place is beyond overpriced and overrated. No sandwich should be over $30. If your rich this your spot, if you have a brain and don't want to spend dinner prices for a average sandwich don't go here.

Daniel C.

Yelp
It's fine. I've had good sandwiches and mediocre sandwiches. The subs are massive. People complain about the price and rightly so, but it isn't as expensive as people say because the size of the sandwiches are massive. Snipe Chopped Cheese - Rosemary pickles take over the flavor. No crispiness from the Snipe collab meat. Not great . Honestly prefer the regular chop cheese because I love the garlic aoli and pickles ruined it for me. Meatball - didn't like this one much. I prefer my own meatballs. Philly - this one is the best. Worth the cost. Ive had a few others. To be honest, the only one I loved was the Philly.

Jeff G.

Yelp
Taste was good. $24 for a cheesesteak (you pay extra for the cheese and basic toppings). Price isn't worth the food in my opinion
google avatar

Fanzi P.

Yelp
The biggest, tastiest hoagies in Colorado. Something magical about the creative sandwich combos and the garlic buttery goodness of their rolls. Worth following and stalking them for weeks just to get a hoagie. 1 is definitely enough for 2 adults to split, we will go in person soon to try the other seasonal items on the menu that are dine in only!

Keith D.

Yelp
I had the cheese steak. Good sandwich. Very good ingredients. But a $20 steak sandwich that comes on a regular sized hard roll is way over priced. Unfortunately I would not go back at those prices. I've had better for less but I had to try it.

Riley S.

Yelp
Sandwich - excellent. Whether it's meat based or light and produce based, all excellent. Tomato pie is really nice, a fun side. Lemon ricotta cookie was phenomenal to top it off. So worth it.

Aaron G.

Yelp
I'm no foodie, but Ive had plenty of hoagies in my life to know what's good and what's not good.. these hoagies are out of this world.. fresh ingredients, fresh baked bread and you can taste the passion and love for sure. It wasn't just slopped together, it was crafted.. you're playing yourself if you ain't tried their hoagies yet.

B W.

Yelp
Sandwiches are all made with love. Owner is a Philly native and makes his bread in house, only uses the best cheeses and meats. I think about these sandwiches often
