Where to Eat and Drink in Petworth | Eater DC

"For satisfying sandwiches and pastries, Little Food Studios from chef Danielle Harris hits the spot. A popular favorite is the sausage roll, a meat-stuffed pastry more commonly found in the U.K., and sandwich names honor family members like mom, grandma and Harris’s aunties. Harris just relocated across the street in October into the old Little Vietnam space." - Tim Ebner

Stopped into this small cafe in Petworth after my morning run. Their balsamic tart cherry scone was served hot and fresh with a soft, pillowy texture. I loved the tartness of the cherries. The iced lavender latte was pretty decent; their syrup tasted homemade, but the espresso itself could have been stronger. Outdoor seating is limited so it's best for grab and go.

Google
This is a really small takeout only place (2 people can be inside to order at a time). Very friendly service. I ordered a breakfast sandwich and an iced latte - the bacon was super crispy and tasty, the egg was a thick yet light and fluffy square, in a brioche bun with pecorino cream spread. I often don't get iced coffee so I don't know how to rate the iced latte, but it was a hot day and needed a beverage to cook me down and it did the trick. Would highly recommend the Little Food Studio for a morning bite to hit the spot. Other customers outside were also super friendly and got a good vibe from the area.

Google
VERY pleased with every life choice that led me to this point. Everything was absolutely delicious! So if you can’t make up your mind, rest assured that you will not choose wrong. Seating is all outside. There are only a few tables, so you may need to get your order to go during busier times. The inside of the shop is only space for one customer at a time to order. Food is delivered after ordering inside, and drink orders are delivered at the window outside. There isn’t a clear line situation outside, so you may need to ask the other folks waiting if they have ordered and where the line to order vs waiting for drinks is. P.S. The coffee is strong.

Google
Coffee is good. Avoid the breakfast sandwiches. They don’t use real egg, they use what’s basically a hamburger bun, and the jelly on the Brie and Jam breakfast sandwich is something like smuckers.

Google
Everything about this place is fantastic. The food is such great quality, the staff is so friendly and personal with each and every customer. The coffee has a great flavor. It's the perfect go to for morning coffee and a breakfast sandwich! I got the Lynne sandwich. I'm usually not a huge fan of blue cheese but this sandwich has made me change my mind about it. Thank you all so very much for your wonderful hospitality. I will be visiting again soon!

Google
This new Black and woman-owned cafe in Petworth is awesome! Super friendly staff, great vibes, and all the pastries and syrups are made in house. Don't miss the sausage roll or the savory scone.

Google
Just popped into the new Little Food Studio & Alameda space and it is lovely!!! I ordered the seasonal pumpkin spice/caramel latte and the cacio y Pepe breakfast sandwich. Both were delicious! Kind and not super fast service, but clearly lots of love and care put into making both the drinks and food so I didn’t mind a little wait. It was fairly busy too, plenty of seating indoors and out. Love the new space, congrats on the upgrade LFS!!

Google
Could I give this place more than five stars? I wish. Staying in the area about a week and I’ve come twice, once on a weekday and once early on a Sunday. The food and coffee is just top notch. Such attention to detail! The pastry is a revelation. A balsamic tart cherry scone was almost certainly a lifetime top ten, and a heritage egg baked with pesto and feta and finished with cracked pepper and course sea salt was just executed flawlessly. The staff are friendly and welcoming, and the service was quick. Prices are also very reasonable. As noted, there's only a handful of outdoor seats. This place is amazing. Do yourself a favor and check it out. You won't be disappointed.

Yelp
Little food studio serves of simple yet sophisticated bites. You may say well it's a sandwich spot but it's more than that and the aesthetic is lovely. For our orders we had the Ellen (my personal fave) and I made it spicy (more on that later), the Bianca, the Marie, and the brioche and egg sandwiches. We also ordered chips, signature and lavender lemonades. The Ellen is a well balanced sandwich served with Turkey Breast, Prosciutto, Pesto, Tomato, Arugula, and if you like some spice add the chili relish. Portions are large and delicious. I'm a sucker for lemonades and with the signature lemonade already comes with mint and basil you know that you're in for a treat- Simply refreshing!! If you're more adventurous then try the lavender and your tastebuds will thank you. If you don't like a bit of sweetness, you can always cut it with water. Anywho I love love love everything Chef Danielle does. Let me tell you about how much I love this spot - I had my job order it for one of our weekly team lunches and now it's added to the rotation because it was a hit. Be sure to also check out the breakfast pastries, lattes and salads. Truly something for everyone.

Yelp
The staff. THE STAFF! They are so so so wonderful and they know people's orders and are always having a good time. The pecorino scone is to die for and their coffee is delish. So excited for them to move to a new space with more seating!

Yelp
I recently moved to the neighborhood and I've been meaning to stop in. It's a VERY small space inside - enough for one, maybe two people to stand near the counter. I ordered the Ellen - it cost $15 which isn't cheap but it's a BIG sandwich that can make two meals if you aren't extremely hungry. I placed my order inside and then sat at one of their tables outside -- it was ready in just a few minutes! The Ellen is tasty. I especially like the pesto and look forward to trying the others!

Yelp
Once again Yelp comes through in the clutch. I had to take detour on my way to the Barbershop to get made handsome again... The guys understand that statement!! However, unfortunately when driving around DC/ PG County borders you will run into some type of construction and detours. Which lead me this way. The detour stirred my appetite which caused me to want a quick breakfast sandwich. However, instead I found this Sausage Roll..and this time I did get my son one too.. When he's in the chair at the Barbershop I normally step away real quick and indulge in some light breakfast or sought. Bottom line for my first time experience, I can't complain about this spot on Upshur St. It didn't disappoint. Thx to my fellow Yelpers! I recommend the is location for sure..

Yelp
Stopped by here right at opening on a Thursday morning. Cute coffee shop with friendly staff- I appreciate how they were welcoming and friendly towards my pup as well :) My boyfriend and I ordered the Olive Oil Mocha (hot and iced) and the lemon mascarpone danish. The danish was not only instagrammable but also so fresh and delicious. The olive oil mocha piqued my interest and lived up to expectations. We ate outside of the coffee shop-- they even had ice water for pups available at 7:30am- a big plus. Their rolls look delicious and seem to sell out but are not available until 8:30am so we were too early to try this morning but would love to come back and give them a taste.

Yelp
Updating my review -- I really like this shop. They make fresh interesting sandwiches to order, on delicious fresh-made bread. And very few places do that anymore. They also have delicious house-made pastries. I've enjoyed this shop and made it a destination I sometimes drive across town for. My only ding from 5 stars to 4 is that they are t actually open the full listed hours. They close up all the ingredients and stop making sandwiches sometime before -- I'm guessing half an hour. So be sure not to come near closing time. I an probably won't drive across town anymore, as there's no good second option nearby.

Yelp
Finally... @littlefoodstudio It's so cute and welcoming! I mean, the people here really make you feel like family. It was our first visit, but we could tell from the rapport with their regulars just how great of an establishment @littlefoodstudio is running! The menu looks great, weekends also includes some special items. But, we went on a Monday! Still ok because we picked up cookies! Olive Oil Mocha w/oat Gingerbread Latte w/oat Drip Coffee Kid's Hot Chocolate Ok Olive Oil Mocha ! Are you intrigued, because I was! Yum! It's rich and creamy but the in-house syrup is made with olive oil instead of cream! But let me say Gingerbread Latte ! If you are a lover of ginger or not, you should try it! Freaking delicious! The hubs & little human also picked up two cookies, Snickerdoodle & Molasses! They both loved it. So, no indoor seating but if you brave the cold- seating/tables outside! Also, order online for window pick up! You can still go inside to order and look at menu.

Yelp
Finally stopped in to try Little food Studio - cute little cafe making sandwiches/pastries/breakfast/coffee. Ordered an oat milk latte (very good), a sausage roll (good), and a sandwich on their fluffy, delicious focaccia (very good). Sandwich was filling, the bread is the star and the hot pepper relish is a nice touch. Will definitely be back to try more!

Yelp
Sausage Rolls and espresso are to die for. Quick and quality service, best to get there in the AM to get a better selection of treats...the outdoor seating is lovely, I'm able to bring my dog and sit while I enjoy my eats. The sandwich selection is great, highly recommend

Yelp
The cutest little bakery shop! They serve a variety of baked goods, sandwiches & coffee drinks. I had the cherry scone (delicious) & lemon ricotta pastry (beautiful & tasty) & the palmiers (flavorful). The staff was friendly & helpful to give me recommendations. I got there around 9:30 AM on a Sunday to secure my goodies as I heard it got busy. One person is inside the shop at a time but there is outdoor seating. A line forms to enter. It was a quick line as they have a system down. Lots of free and metered parking. LGBTQ friendly & black owned. The shop is small so I'm not sure how accessible but there is no step to access the shop so it's a smooth surface.

Alex M.

Yelp
Amazing vegan sandwich. Service is friendly. Takeout, so no ambience to report. Highly recommend.

Yelp
Big energy and positive vibes surround this little cafe in Petworth. Once you pass the "Black Built. Black Owned. Black Baked. Black Brewed" sign in the window, you're swept away by music jamming, staff dancing and the smell of pastries baking. There's no better way to start your morning in Washington, D.C. After years working in D.C.'s food scene, owner Danielle started her own food studio out of a small green brick building on Upshur Street NW where competition is tough. However, she carved out a unique piece of the restaurant pie brewing coffee and baking sweet and savory pastries in the morning and sandwiches for lunch. For breakfast, they have sweet and savory options and some items that combine the two like the break pudding muffin with vanilla and fennel. The balsamic tart cherry scone is sweeter whereas the pancetta scone is savory. The sausage roll combines fennel and sage in a pork filled pastry. They have a full espresso bar with flat whites, lattes, cortados and any other coffee drink you can imagine. The service isn't service, it's family. They treat everyone with respect and welcome you as family. Little Food Studio serves good food, brews great coffee and leaves you having a good day.

Yelp
I've ordered with them quite a few times via Uber eats. They're one of my go to places when I'm craving a Caesar salad. My only qualm is they only give one dressing, even when I ask for an extra via the instructions. When I get near the end of my salad there is very little dressing left. I've also tried a palmier. It came smaller than I expected and nothing to call home about. I've tried chai latte (cold and hot) and the olive oil mocha which were all ok but not memorable. Lastly, I've had the Ellen without prosciutto. The ingredients were fresh and the portion was great. I think I just prefer my sandwiches on a croissant so it was just ok for me. Overall, this is a solid spot and I'll continue to order my salad.

Yelp
We stopped by on our way to ramen and omg it did not disappoint! The service was amazing and the iced lavender latte was yummm!!! Would definitely come back and totally recommend!!!

Kate N.

Yelp
Stopped by there on my way home from a run recently for coffee, and a breakfast sandwich, some treats for my running buddy, and a scone that I took home to my husband. Everything was great. the Cacio y Pepe sandwich was flavorful, yge coffee was refreshing without being overly sweet, and the scone was delicious. Also, even though it was super busy, service was great.

Yelp
Balsamic tart cherry scone is unreal. I'm definitely coming back to breakfast sandwich (only on weekends). Super friendly

Yelp
5 stars and beyond! Recently moved to the area and walked myself over to try out this wonderful lil shack overflowing with love and delicious food. Had the pleasure of meeting Emily who made the best mocha I've ever had and welcomed me and my 100lb pup in the store with treats and smiles. Got the croque monsieur breakfast sammy, sausage rolls and the rosemary apple tart and all were memorable and delightful. Beyond grateful for this wonderful establishment and looking forward to my next visit!! Thank yall, this place is a lil bit of magic

Yelp
OMG- where to start! I just popped into this place that - for the first time - didn't have a line out the door! It helped that it was pouring rain. I almost couldn't tell where to enter as I could see the fridge thru the main door. No matter. The women inside welcomed me in warmly and offered help. I got the Nichelle and added their (not that spicy) Calabrian chili relish. First - the staggering size & beauty of this sandwich when i unwrapped it at home may have actually made me say "wow!" The marinated eggplant was wonderfully tasty - kind of ground/chopped/creamy - and the fresh mozz w/ tomato cream & arugula was just TOO DIE FOR. The freshness of the focaccia & veggies was a taste explosion in the mouth. You could really taste the fresh EVOO. The Calabrian chili addition was really perfect, adding a nice bit of heat and flavor. I couldn't come close to eating it all, though my stomach sure wanted me to!! I also got a balsamic cherry scone & another savory one for later (ham & herb??). I positively cannot WAIT to try them - and to go back! The service was great. Billy Holiday piped into the tiny one room place while I waited was just perfect. Really can't wait to return. Psyched this is in our neighborhood.

Theobald T.

Yelp
Great place for coffee or lunch. The staff is friendly and I really love the "Ellen" sandwich. The only downside is that they're closed a lot (or maybe I just always show up on Mondays?). It would also be great if they offered the option to get coffee in cups/mugs rather than paper cups when sitting down.
google avatar

Daijah R.

Yelp
10s across the board!!! I'm so happy this place opened. It's such a cute spot that fits right in with the neighborhood! The team is polite, and make you feel like a regular even if it's your first visit. The menu seems to rotate a bit, so I'm so excited to make this a frequent choice and try out everything!

Yelp
This new Black and woman-owned cafe in Petworth is awesome! Super friendly staff, great vibes, and all the pastries and syrups are made in house. Don't miss the sausage roll or the savory scone.

Yelp
Really good pastries. Outstanding sweet and savory scones - very very tender. Everybody is very accommodating.
google avatar

Yelp
This place is amazing! I ordered the Lynne and it was divine. The cherry blossom lemonade was the best lemonade I've had...ever. I'm very much looking forward to trying everything else on the menu!
google avatar

Raquel M.

Yelp
A welcome addition to the area, open early and also amazing savory scones and massively delicious lunch sandwiches. Try a lavender vanilla latte - so yummy.
google avatar

Claire G.

Yelp
I am obsessed with this place. First and foremost, their staff is so freakin nice. Some of the kindest and hardest working people!! And their food and drinks are AMAZING. Love their cold brew and all their cookies and pastries (their scones are to die for). They make great sandwiches as well! Make sure to follow them on Instagram to make sure they're not sold out when you go!
google avatar

Alison J.

Yelp
Ok wow - my first time trying and I was pleasantly surprised. I had the basil mint lemonade, the cherry scone and the snickerdoodle cookie. The service was very friendly and prices were reasonable. The baked goods were honestly exceptional - definitely homemade. I can't wait to come back and try more!
google avatar

Yelp
Little Food Studio is one of the places that you should make as part of your morning or lunch routine. The staff is incredible - always cheery, always helpful, always kind, and kindness goes a long way. On top of the stellar staff, their baked goods and sandwiches (all made IN HOUSE) are insanely delicious. From the sausage roll to their ricotta herb scones, you can never go wrong when you're grabbing a coffee and breakfast from them. Lunch with them is also a special treat, sandwiches and salads alike are the perfect pick-me-up on any day. I cannot recommend this hidden treasure enough! :)

Lindsay G.

Yelp
Yummy little (literally, little) spot -- good coffee and enjoyed my cheese and herb scone (it was like a biscuit). The scone was very fresh. Small amount of outdoor seating. The seasonal drinks looked very tasty and all the baked goods looked good.
google avatar

Mallory Y.

Yelp
My favorite neighborhood coffeeshop!! The pastries are incredible and the egg bakes that I get every weekend are sooo flaky and gorgeous. So glad I'm able to get my fav oat latte here most mornings
google avatar

Andrea S.

Yelp
I'm so happy this new coffee and sandwich shop opened on Upshur street! They make amazing coffee with lots of non-dairy options, their staff is super friendly and seem genuinely happy to work there, and their food menu is simple but delicious (lots of Italian coldcuts on picture perfect ciabatta bread). You can order inside and then watch them make your drinks on the fancy espresso machines from the open window outside. I hope they open a patio soon!

Jen O.

Yelp
This is an awesome spot! Was staying at an apartment down the street for a week and upon discovering this gem, came by every day. As a dog owner, absolutely love the ability to order ahead and pick up at the window. Coffee was delicious and the pastries were top-notch. Very engaging and kind employees.
google avatar

Yelp
Little Food Studio is fantastic! The staff is so friendly and the food and drinks are amazing. I went for the first time today and had the Nichelle and an oat milk latte, both of which were incredible. I'm happy to have this new spot in the neighborhood and looking forward to visiting often.
google avatar

Yelp
A friend and I stopped by this completely charming spot in it's first week open and I'm so happy they exist! It's a walk up (or pop in) situation--no seating for now. Also--heads up, they do not have a restroom for customers. But the vibe is bright and cheerful. The kind of spot you are proud to have in your neighborhood. I'd heard they were selling out fast (understandable as they work out first week kinks) but when we arrived at noon they still had plenty of food. I ordered a cold brew with oat milk and the bread pudding muffin. The coffee was rich and fresh, even at noon, and I always appreciate a spot with a variety of alt milks since discovering I can't do traditional milk any more ::sob:: The bread pudding muffin was easily one of the most unique, complex, delicious pastries I've had in years. It was almost custardy and rich and it was sweet but definitely not too sweet -- a welcome respite from thoughtless, sugary muffins. I didn't notice that there was fennel in it when ordering, so that was quite a surprise but a fun, unexpected ingredient! I don't know that I would have called it a bread pudding muffin, I had imagined it would be pieces you could pull apart, but that's not a criticism, just an observation. This spot is far from my home, but I literally cannot wait to go back and try even more from the menu. The staff were incredibly friendly. We even had a quick chat with the owner who was also very friendly! I will be rooting for all the success for them.
google avatar

R M.

Yelp
What a treat - and wow are these sandwiches *huge*, on enormous fluffy focaccia. It really feels like you're spoiling yourself by getting something from here - both delicious and a little decadent. But everything tastes fresh and non-processed.
google avatar

Bhavana C.

Yelp
Love this new spot in the neighborhood. Tried two scones, a savory (herb, pecorino, ricotta), and a sweet (balsamic tart cherry) and a vanilla milk made with house-made vanilla syrup. Everything was excellent, and the cherry scone in particular was great. The staff was friendly and fast, and they have a nice set up outside with a few tables and some planters of flowers dividing them. A really nice way to spend a Sunday morning. Looking forward to trying the sandwiches next!
google avatar

Etta D.

Yelp
Love this neighborhood spot! The savory scones are so good. I've also had their egg bake and multiple coffee drinks -- all great!

Hank K.

Yelp
Incredible service, super fun bakers and baristas, delicious cold brew and Blueberry Danish (flaky y fresh)
google avatar

Chris E.

Yelp
They have bendy straws!!! On the real, great coffee. Strong, rich, espresso and the baristas are so nice. Can't wait to try everything else on their menu - I came in early on a Tuesday morning and didn't notice any pastries, may have just missed them. The sandwich menu looks delicious. Thanks LFS for gracing Petworth with your deliciousness!
google avatar

C S.

Yelp
Spectacular lunch! I had the Nichelle and my husband had the Ellen sandwich. Both were delicious. The lemonade is unique and should not be missed. There are hints of herbs that are masterful. There is a warm and friendly vibe. This is a great addition to the neighborhood and to the area. We'll be back this weekend to try the pastries.

Belle R.

Yelp
I can't wait to go back! I have been looking for an excuse to go to Petworth so I could visit Little Food Studio. This morning I decided that Little Food Studio was the best reason I could find. It was almost noon and relatively easy to find parking, even though there's a farmers market down the block and the neighborhood seemed very vibrant with lots of people out. The food was just as spectacular as I had read about. We got the Burnetta and the Lynne. I've been thinking of the Burnetta for two weeks straight and it was exactly as amazing as I expected (not gonna lie, I had somewhat unrealistic expectations, I wanted it to bring me back to my pre-pandemic overseas vacation and somehow LFS delivered). We also got super refreshing lemonades. Now, the service. I will definitely be back for the food (so much more I want to try!) but I don't recall the last time I was so well treated by a stranger. The lady working the orders was SOOO patient and kind with me. I was totally overwhelmed by my options and there was a line forming outside, but she didn't rush me at all. In fact, she kept telling me to take my time and even helped me decide what to pick. I know this might seem silly and small to some but it made such a difference to me; it was like a hug. She definitely came to this world to deal with people and I am so glad she was the one between me and delicious food today.
google avatar

Angela S.

Yelp
Omg this little studio is amazingly delicious!!!! The owners are so polite and it's just omg so yummay !!!!

Brian D J.

Yelp
I just stopped randomly to grab an iced coffee and noticed they had sandwiches. Holy smokes what an amazing sandwich. The focaccia is so fresh and Tastes amazing. Everything ingredient on the sandwich worked harmoniously together. Mozzarella was so fresh. The olive spread was off the chain. The staff was equally as awesome and amazing. Very cool and friendly. I'll be stopping through again soon. I highly recommend this spot!
google avatar

Karolina W.

Yelp
I've now had their breakfast pastries, coffee, and lunch sandwiches, and each has been knocked out of the park! The food is delicious and unique, the atmosphere great, and staff incredibly welcoming. My only small suggestion would be to add some umbrellas/shaded spots for waiting and sitting, since it can get quite toasty in the sun. All in all, this is such a great addition to the neighborhood and I can't wait to visit many, many more times!
google avatar

Lydia O.

Yelp
Super cute and tiny spot with a very friendly staff. Would definitely recommend. Easy parking across the street

Theo G.

Yelp
Sandwiches so good you can't stop thinking about them for days until your next visit. I won't stop until I've tried everything on the menu. And a sausage roll for breakfast is the best way to start your day. And a cookie for your commute.

Tyler W.

Yelp
This review comes late because i've been a regular here for almost a year now. The best place to get coffee! their customer service is bomb. Super kind. they always have seasonal flavors too.

Gretchen W.

Yelp
Really great local spot serving up mouth-watering treats. I don't live in the immediate area, in fact, I walk 50 mins total from my place to get here and back. That should clue you in as to the quality of food here. Plus getting a little exercise is my excuse to splurge. The staff are very welcoming and kind. I stick with the scones here, it's hard to find a good scone, these folks make them excellently. I've had the balsamic cherry, pecorino, and chocolate chip all really delicious. Speaking of delicious you have to try their focaccia sandwiches, my go-to is the Ellen. I also recently had their tomato soup which I think is a seasonal item is was so delicious. If you're in the area check them out, or go out for a walk to get here :).
google avatar

Marta M.

Yelp
I literally said "oh my god" after my first bite of the sausage roll. Now my preschooler is following behind me eating one of their bread pudding muffins saying "oh my god" after every bite. It's funny but he's right, those muffins are amazing. The mint basil lemonade and the blood orange scones are also amazing. Everything here is amazing. We love this amazingly amazing place.

Meagan B.

Yelp
The best. Coffee and lattes are amazing. Savory herb biscuits and sausage rolls make for a nice Saturday morning treat. Service is always friendly. This is my go to Saturday morning after pilates class and during the week for a pick me up!
