The 10 Biggest Eater SF Stories of 2019 - Eater SF

"In a year that felt like it had more 'longstanding SF institution closes' headlines than ever, the closure of Lucca evoked complicated emotions: As opposed to a traditional tale of bad landlord deeds or declining sales, the owners of the 91-year-old Mission pasta shop decided to retire and sell its building, making about $10 million all told." - Eve Batey

Keep in mind, these sandwiches are HUGE!!!! Like, bigger than I’ve ever seen anywhere. If you’re ordering for multiple people, I’d highly suggest splitting it between 2 people. That being said, I tried 3 and every single one was absolutely delicious!!! I was pleasantly surprised and I’m so glad we ordered take out from here.

Got Pastrami + Prime Rib. Pastrami was STACKED. And it was about $14. The sandwiches are gigantic in width, bigger than your forearm. The pastrami was really flavorful, but I’ve definitely had multiple spots with better quality/tasting meats. DEFINITELY ABOVE AVERAGE however, and is good enough to go back to for just this sandwich. Prime rib, unfortunately, had basically no meat. Couldn’t even feel it chewing or taste it because it was so little in comparison to the rest of the sandwich. Regardless, the sauces/bread/and veg were all good. The bread being the most notably above average. Wouldn’t say any were great, but definitely solid at the least. They, also, didn’t put the add ons my partner added and paid for. They weren’t busy so I’m not sure how often mistakes like this happen when they are. Not the end of the world but something to keep in mind; check before you leave. Overall, the food was pretty good taste and quality. Portion size was a great deal, better than you’ll find probably 99% elsewhere. If you’re looking for the best sandwiches, this probably isn’t it. But if you want good sandwiches for a great deal, with very good bread, this is a great place. Side note: the sourdough is good but it’s too stiff of a crust for a dry sandwich (not practical, has absolutely 0 chew so it doesn’t break). Not a good idea for something with so many scattered, frayed toppings. You would only use this thick of a roll for a wet sandwich (ie french dip). Still tasted great and loved the bread texture. Crust was enjoyable but just not a good pick for these. So I’d highly recommend the Dutch. Worth traveling to? Only if you’re nearby. Best spot for locals needing a SW? Yes by far.

Visited this place after several years having so many places to go. Still the sandwiches are the same as several years ago. They are maintaining the quality of the sandwiches the same and that is excellent. I ordered a Tri tip special with bacon and it came with lettuce tomatoes and onions… divided in four and still everyone was satisfied. They normally run out of bread before closing time of 4 pm so they will stop serving and close earlier so call before going there…. If you want to go after 3 pm…

Little Lucca is an absolute gem. The parking lot is generous, for a small hidden shop, there’s usually a long line out the door. I waited 40 minutes to order on a cold windy lunch day. From the moment you walk in, you’re hit with the smell of freshly baked bread and meats—pure heaven. The sandwiches are huge (seriously, one can feed two people), but it’s the quality and flavor that really stand out. Their famous garlic sauce is a game-changer—creamy, garlicky, and addictive. I had the tri tip, double meat, chicken breast, and hot pastrami with everything on it, and every sandwich was hands down the best sandwich I’ve ever had. Perfectly balanced, stacked high, and every bite was flavorful. The staff is friendly and efficient, even when the line is out the door. Pro tip: order ahead if you’re in a rush. But honestly, even if you wait, it’s worth every second. If you’re a sandwich lover or just want to see what a real deli sandwich tastes like, Little Lucca is a must-visit. Don’t skip the garlic sauce. Ever. FYI, If you are ever in Burlingame, they have another location there and it is larger with indoor and outdoor seating and the lines move fast!

Stopped here on my way in from SFO. Very good Italian sandwiches and a big selection of anything you could want from a deli. I got the little Luca combo and was super happy with it. Prepare to wait a little bit in a line and finding a place to eat. It may also make for two meals. Credit cards accepted (doesn’t look like they would but they do)

Google
There are quite a few places in the bay with amazing sandwiches and Little Lucca is one of them and is a staple in my diet. I’ve been coming close to a decade and I don’t know how they do it, but they’re able to give you a great sandwich that is insanely huge for an extremely reasonable price (size equivalent to a 40oz hydroflask). I will admit they are probably not the best sandwich I’ve ever had, but as far as being local it’s unmatched in terms of taste and value. These puppies can easily be a full day meal if you don’t eat that much and at the very least two meals. However, if you’re like me, I’m crushing in one go and regretting it. I also think what sets them aside from other shops is the homemade sauce they have, the garlic and pepper sauce is amazing! Particularly the garlic one. My typical order usually encompasses some kind of combination of hot coppa, hot salami, salami, mortadella, and or prosciutto + dutch crunch bread. If going this meat route I highly recommend asking them to cut them THINLY otherwise it does make the sandwich experience worse (meat falling out due to incomplete tear off from bite). Could also be a skill issue ¯\_(ツ)_/¯. Another staple if I want a hot sando is the meatball marinara! Overall if you’re local it’s a 5/5 spot in terms of value and taste, but I wouldn’t really want to wait too long in line for it or if living far travel frequently for it. Pro tip: call ahead to check the line situation or just order ahead via phone. I believe they have different queue times for phone vs in person.

THE BEST SANDWICH YOU WILL EVER HAVE!!!!!!! The fresh ingredients and massive size is incredible!! They have so many different sandwiches it will make you dizzy but I guarantee they are all delicious. Try n phone in your order because it does get busy as hell and the line is out the door. Definitely WORTH THE WAIT!!!

Google
Seriously, one of the best sandwiches I’ve ever had, and I’m talking evet! Not to mention this Dutch crunch bread!! This is one heck of a treat! They offer those “Soup Nazi vibes”. Look at the menu ahead of time, know what you want, tell the meat slicer man that, then know what toppings/sauces you want. Pay and go someplace comfortable to eat these monsters. After that first bite, you’re gunna kick those shoes off. Just so you can wiggle your toes and delight.

Yelp
DIRTY, DISGUSTING.......delicious :( I love Little Lucca but their employees need a refresher course on food safety. They practice glove theatre here which I HATE. I'd rather food prep workers just washed their bare hands frequently. They touch money and dirty cardboard boxes from outside with the same gloves they dig straight into the food bins. Like, all up in it. Grabbing handfuls of sprouts and pickles with their dirty gloves. I should have said something but was too self conscious. They're also set up in such a way that their uncovered faces are directly above the food they're prepping, and of course they're talking and laughing the entire time they assemble your sandwich. we're def all getting a nice little spritz of saliva~

Yelp
What separates this sandwich shop from the rest of the competition is definitely their garlic and italian sauce they use in every sandwich. Those 2 sauces make all the difference and have people coming back! Now the rest of the ingredients are average at best. Nothing special and high quality, but nothing low quality. Bread is nice and big. The whole sandwich is huge for 1 meal. I'd have to make it into 2. The only downside is the very very long wait. Be prepared to stand in the sun and wait inside. Even upwards to 1 hour.

Yelp
Honestly, the sandwiches here are ok...just ok, nothing special. Nothing to amaze your tastebuds. A lot of the 5 star reviews on here seem to come from a nostalgia tinted mindset- "I used to come here with my parents as a kid, blah, blah, blah" Nobody cares, man. Your nostalgic feelings don't make this food taste all that good outside of your warped perceptions. The thing that really got me is that rude old white lady at the counter, dude, she needs to go. She's a mean old wrinkled up thing. I'm never going to this overrated dump again. Wasn't impressed in the least, and I drive by this place numerous times a day, and even if I'm starving, I'll go somewhere else... Basically, this place sucks.

Yelp
I faxed in an order for two sandwiches 2 hours before pick up and when I got there, my sandwiches weren't even made and they told me I had to next time call them to make sure they had enough ingredients. It makes sense but then at that point, why even have an option to fax in orders if I'm calling anyways?? They told me they only had wheat bread available but they had my order 2 hours prior to when I arrived so not sure why they didn't set aside the bread I requested or gave me a call to let me know... it was very unorganized and employees were a bit rude in my opinion. Other than the poor service, I ended up getting both sandwiches with wheat bread and they weren't bad. I do really wish I had them on Dutch crunch since I believe the bread really makes a difference for any sandwich but it was still very solid. I got the lucca combo and steak Caesar sandwich but preferred the combo more since the dressing and steak got tiring and the bread soggy. The sandwiches are massive and you'll def have leftovers and get your money's worth which I love. I'd give little lucca's another shot with the bread I actually want but I was very turned away by the poor service and preparation as a first impression

Yelp
My son always mentioned this place when he travels to SFO. Before our trek back to So Cal we decided to go with his recommendation. Our plan was to enjoy our sandwiches at a nearby park. We were in line for quite some time. This place is busy! We had 6 sandwiches made and purchased some pickles too. We didn't realize the sandwiches here are HUGE! You can split them into 4 meals! lol The service was great and the staff works pretty hard. We brought some sandwiches back to family in So Cal who wanted to them! Thank goodness I had a good cooler. Anyway, we did drop by a park to enjoy them. We ordered the following sandwiches... -Grilled Breast -Lucca Combo - mortadella, provolone, salami -Rotisserie Chicken Bacon Ranch - provolone cheese, regular bacon, & ranch dressing -Turkey, Bacon, Pepper Cheese- -Fresh Roasted Turkey & Cranberry -Lucca Ultimate- Turkey, Ham, Bacon, Cheese I don't think you can go wrong with any sandwich choice. They are good, the bread is fresh. The only thing I didn't like too much was the turkey deli meat. I like the textured not the slimy like meat. While in line, a was told a great tip is just phone order it's quicker than waiting in line.

Yelp
Wild turkey sandwich on Dutch crunch hands down is my favorite here. I wish they toast their sandwiches, but then orders would take even longer. Great group of people who work there. I learned it's just easier to order online (and pay) even though I lose the customization of adding more or less of something, but pick up is a breeze so it is worth it. Skip the line and head straight to the counter. I haven't tried calling in but I don't think I'll try that anytime soon. It's my annual birthday tradition to have a wild turkey sandwich by the beach. Highly recommend.

Yelp
Got the Brisket on Dutch Crunch. The bread did not have a "crunch" that I thought the name implied. In fact it was quite soggy, I don't know if there was an option to toast but that would have made the bread better. The meat-to-bun ratio is what really stood out to me. The brisket could honestly give Buc-ees a run for its money, although the BBQ sauce was a little sweet for my taste. I asked for only onions and pickles in my sandwich (cause who would put lettuce and tomatoes in a brisket sandwich), but I turned around to see them put everything on it. No matter, I'll just take it as it is I suppose.

Yelp
I can't believe I slept on this for so many years. I finally got to try it last Sunday during lunch hour and there was no wait. I brought it with me on a hike and it did not disappoint. The sandwich was loaded with meat and the garlic sauce was to die for. The portion size was huge so you can definitely share it with a friend. I did ask them to put tomato on half of the sandwich only but they ended up leaving it in for the entire sandwich. Other than that small hiccup, everything was perfect. I also wished the Dutch Crunch was crispier but I didn't eat it right away so perhaps that wasn't a fair judgement. I will definitely revisit again because it's a 10/10 for me.

Yelp
Incredible! 10/10 for sure I had the little Luca combo on the Dutch crunch roll and it has to be one of the best sandwiches I've ever had. The Dutch crunch roll is a must, too! My husband got the roasted steak on sourdough and it was amazing, too. Though we both agreed we'd skip the sourdough bread and get the Dutch crunch roll again as it was a bit tough. The house sauce was so well balanced and I swear I've never had such an amazing pepper sauce on a sandwich. The sandwiches were also huge! The sandwiches were made right in front of us and the assembly line of workers were fast and efficient. The inside is tight but the smells of the sandwiches made every inch of space worth it. The wait was maybe 30 minutes around 11am. The line was never non-existent so I can't complain. A lot of people ordered ahead so maybe that's worth it. There was minimal parking but we got lucky. I'm from socal so I won't be frequenting the area much BUT I will never not stop and split a sandwich when in the area!

Yelp
Went on a weekday between 1:30-2. It was busy busy but the line wasn't outside. This is your traditional old school legit deli! Don't complain about the prices because honestly there's enough sandwich for a couple of days or two meals lol. The inside looks like the age it's been around. Nothing fancy at all. Just a go in and get ya sandwich and leave type of place lol. Tons of suggested sandwich options on the wall or create your own! Staff is awesome and helpful. They look tired and for every reason, I'm pretty sure they barely get to breathe with all the people coming in non-stop! Good hard working sandwich creators! Highly recommend! Also trust me, turkey with cream cheese and cranberry! So delicious!

Yelp
My husband and I went to this place accidentally as the initial one we went to was in Burlingame. Though I love the sandwiches at both locations (Chipotle bird and pastrami), this place is a little too hot and crowded for my liking. Be prepared to stand in line for about 30min on a short day. Ingredients were fresh aa the other location was, so no complaints there, but there was a communication barrier that was a little of hinderance when ordering.
google avatar

Mahima D.

Yelp
This is a very popular spot with people waiting an hour or longer for sandwiches, so of course I had to see what the hype is about! They're famous for their garlic spread, which comes on all sandwiches. I got the sliced chipotle chicken on Dutch crunch after waiting an hour. You can order online on doordash or they have a fax?? (What century are we in lol they need to update this and their website) there's also a Burlingame location that's less busy but had to try the OG! The sandwich is huge and around $15 with tax, kind of like two meals for me so the value is there. Sandwich was tasty, ingredients felt fresh. They don't toast but they do heat it in a microwave if you want. I saw them slice the meat while making it, overall taste was an 8/10. Would come back to try something diff but prob order online to save time! They do have a small parking lot as well.

Yelp
I wanted to order some sandwiches at 10am on a Sunday morning, which I thought wouldn't be a particularly busy time. I was wrong! It took me five tries just to get someone on the phone to take my order. Once I got to the restaurant, I could see why. There was a long line out the door! And there were consistently phone orders coming in, such that the cashier didn't even have a moment to ring up my order. I recommend placing a phone order. The line is very long, and the sandwiches I ordered over the phone were ready for pickup after only 20 minutes. I usually order a pastrami sandwich, but this time I went with the chicken bacon ranch. It was delicious. Would definitely order this again. I always get my sandwiches on Dutch Crunch bread. I also have to remember to request no mustard and no hot pepper sauce, since those come standard. Next time, I'd like to try the BLTA.

Yelp
Little Lucca's reputation precedes itself and we can only add more praise as this is definitely one of the best, if not the best sandwich shops in the Bay Area! We arrived on a weekday before the lunch rush and there was still a line out the door. The line went by relatively quick and we were able to get our sandwich within 20 minutes. We ordered the Lucca Combo sandwich on Dutch Crunch which had provolone, mortadella, and salami and it was definitely more than enough for two people. They do not skimp on the ingredients and tasted super fresh as well. The sandwich was amazing and did not taste dry at all with their amazing garlic and hot pepper sauces, which were definitely a highlight for me. The Dutch Crunch bread was a tiny bit harder than I prefer, but still fantastic nonetheless. For the price, it'd be hard to find a better sandwich place than Little Lucca's! Little Lucca's is an iconic sandwich shop that is a must visit and we will definitely be back!

Yelp
The best sandwiches in South San Francisco: Little Lucca! This place is usually packed with a line out the door, but we decided to shoot our shot since it was raining and hoped there wouldn't be a line and luckily it wasn't that long! Everything is made to order in front of you and you can add what you'd like. They have a garlic and hot pepper sauce which are sooo good and a must get. They definitely don't skimp on the add ins and both our sandwiches came out packed and HUGE! We were able to save and eat the other half for dinner haha It's a really nice place to grab a sandwich and maybe head over to the beach or somewhere nice to enjoy. We ended up taking it home and decided to toast it a bit and it was perfection. Next time you're in South San Francisco and looking for a sandwich, come check out Little Lucca! Everyone was so nice and patient even with a rush.

Yelp
Heard so much about this place and finally came in on a Saturday. It's a small take out spot by a busy street. The line was sooo long. We were there for a good amount of time that we figured what was kinda stopping them from moving faster (it's the microwaves lol) Anyway, the size of the sandwiches can fit two people. Lots of options to choose from too. Get the dutch crunch and garlic sauce!
google avatar

Tiffany R.

Yelp
Good things come to those who wait. There's always a line for two reasons. First, the shop is tiny and second it's delicious. Huge sandwiches and great selection. Local favorite for years and just as great as I remember.
google avatar

Jenny Y.

Yelp
This has been on my list for so long and finally gave it a try! Stopped by a little before 11am on a Wednesday. Luckily it wasn't as busy in the beginning but more people started coming in a little after. They had about 3-4 people taking orders. You see them make the sandwiches and they're so efficient! I tried the fire roasted steak, generous portions and a big sandwich overall! Dutch crunch is my go-to for sandwiches, so it was a must try here. I usually prefer the bread more toasted for that extra crunch but it was still so good. This sandwich is definitely on the saucier side from the dressing, so it got a little messy. I saved half to eat the next day and put it in the air fryer - extra good! Workers are friendly. We told them it was our first time and they gave us recommendations to try for next time. We were told the southwestern was one of their favorites and to try the tri tip special with bacon jalapeño. Pretty small inside, so it can get pretty cramped if people start piling in. No tables available for dine-in, so we just ate outside at the car. They have a decent sized parking area! Definitely will be back to try the other sandwiches. I can understand and confirm what the hype is all about!
google avatar

Mikaela L.

Yelp
Oh my goodness!! This place is amazing!! I got the turkey bacon pepper Jack with Dutch roll. So good and was huge!!! The line was quite long took around 30ish minutes on a Saturday. But the workers were all nice etc. there is a parking place nearby or can park on nearby streets. Place is cute and clean. Will be back soon!
google avatar

Elizabeth D.

Yelp
The sandwiches were a perfect balance of freshness and flavor. I tried the Lucca's Ultimate Club, which had thick juicy layers of turkey, ham, and bacon for a crunch. Definitely recommend trying the Dutch crunch bread and adding their special garlic sauce on sandwiches if it doesn't come with it already. There is a line but it's worth the wait! The deli has a variety of options from vegetarian to creative specials. Highly recommend!
google avatar

Paolo B.

Yelp
No line on a weekday, really hungry, going to Little Lucca was an easy decision. Went for a classic this time around, and ordered the turkey, bacon, and pepper jack cheese on a soft sour roll. While the sandwich is good, it's carried by their pesto sauce and pepper spread. The turkey meat quality is middy, but it does what it needs to do. If you look closely at the menu, they offer boar's head for some of their meat options, so next time I'm going to look for those or stick with the tri-tip or fire roasted steak cesar. Per usual, the sandwiches were quite large. The sheer size of these sandwiches make it worth the nearly $20 (after tax n tip) you are going to spend for a sandwich that you can easily turn into two meals. I'm not the biggest fan of their sour rolls, the dutch crunch is hit or miss, but after I ordered I realized they offer Italian Rolls now, which is definitely something I'm going to try next time around. Little Lucca is still a staple in SSF and is definitely a spot worth checking out if you craving enormously large deli sandwiches.
google avatar

Ashley K.

Yelp
if you don't order ahead of time, don't fret. the line moves more quickly than you'll expect, and, that crying baby will pipe down soon. you'll debate your order a thousand times as you shuffle along, because every one looks incredible. then the moment of truth: you're called to the counter. it all goes out the window, and you order the luca combo. god what a sandwich. this thing was so nice looking that some random dude on the sidewalk stopped and asked me where i'd ordered it, and also threatened to steal a bite haha the ambiance (if you've ever been) will remind you of all the best delis on the east coast. a little brash, serious about the sandwiches, and quick.
google avatar

Monique S.

Yelp
I'm a sandwich girly, always will be! Only thing bad about this spot is the fact the place is small and the lines are long! But the sandwiches! OMG One sandwich stacked up and big enough to feed 2 people! The prices are worth it for what you get! The crew inside is quick and efficient for sure, order ahead by phone or doordash. Because the line gets loooooooooong! I felt like chicken parm today, on sourdough with the works. Extra garlic and pepper spread of course . My bread was crispy yet soft, definitely didn't get soggy considering the mountain of items on it. Chicken = stacked! Cheese = stacked! The flavors were there, and I love that they shred their lettuce and onions thinly. Makes for an all around better flavor. Little Lucca definitely does not disappoint!! Barely through one half of this sandwich as I type this!
google avatar

Ankitha D.

Yelp
Came here around 2:20-2:30 pm on a Saturday. We wait maybe 30-45 mins before we got to the front. There was a line out the door but it went by quicker than I expected. Service was pretty good and I was quick to make a decision on what we wanted. My husband went with the fire roasted steak with avocado and I did the little Lucca combo both on Dutch crunch bread. I watched the way they made the sandwiches and honestly it was mesmerizing haha. I felt like they were carefully crafting each sandwich delicately. I got chips and a coke for extra and total was around $40. The sandwiches were pretty big, and I could barely finish mine. I still have a whole half left tbh. My husband couldn't finish his either. But we both loved them, felt like the ingredients were fresh and the sauces were bomb. I would definitely come back to try their dozen other sandwiches!
google avatar

Tracy D.

Yelp
Sandwiches were delicious and everything is fresh!! Worth the wait!! Prices are super responsive for what you get. We all ate half for lunch and ate the other half for dinner
google avatar

Mitch L.

Yelp
The best , taste ,portion& value! Hands down , my recommendation is chicken parm, ham and Swiss, little Luca special. If you have multiple order fax in go straight to pick up avoid huge lines.
google avatar

Allan Y.

Yelp
I have been hearing about this place from one of my co-workers for years because he lived in San Mateo and went the often. I finally got to try them. I got a smoked turkey, roast beef, bacon and avocados with everything and of their garlic sauce and sourdough roll. 1st, this sandwich came out massive, over a pounds I think. They give you a healthy amount of meat and all fresh. 1st bite into the sandwich was amazing, never had anything like it. Best sandwich I ever had!!! I differently coming back.
google avatar

Minh B.

Yelp
Perfection!!!!! I finally got to check this spot out, they always have very long lines. But I can totally understand the hype. They are very generous with toppings. One sandwich can easily be shared among 3 people. I like that they also toasted their bread very well. Of course, we opted for the dutch crunch. The inside is filled with goodies and delicious sauces. I would definitely come back here again to try more sandwiches.
google avatar

Stephy B.

Yelp
I got off the plane from TX and first stop was here. It looked amazing and wanted to try The sandwich was amazing wish I would have stopped on my way out for a second one. my friend and I shared a dutch crunch italian sandwich and it was delicious. The staff were super friendly and nice. The place is smaller but it had a nice vibe.. I would definitely recommend this place... I will definitely be back just for a sandwich
google avatar

Katie N.

Yelp
Great authentic sandwich shop in south San Francisco. The sandwiches here were very messy but incredible. Highly recommend ordering on Dutch crunch roll. We got the fire roasted steak sandwich and the Lucca combo and would get both again. My husband thought the combo sandwich was a little better. We love pepperoncinis so we added those and it was a good touch. Prices are fair for what you get - 2 people could probably share one sandwich, unless you're starving. On a weekend there was a long line out the door but we did a call ahead order over the phone before we came and they had it ready within about 20 minutes. Check this place out! You won't regret it!
google avatar

Amy L.

Yelp
Would highly recommend ordering online for pickup or just picking an unpopular time to swing by! We came on a Saturday, parked in the lot, and got in line around 12:55pm. The line itself was not long but it moved slowly for a couple reasons: first, many people are ordering 3+ sandwiches - there was a mother daughter duo that ordered 7! Second, unlike the delis that I'm accustomed to in the northeast, the process of making your sandwich is sloooooow. I was kind of shocked to also see that microwaves are very much highlighted in the process of making your sandwiches which made me extremely doubtful as to how the sandwiches would taste. We finally got our food at 2pm with the fire roasted steak sandwich and the little Lucca combo - both with provolone cheese on Dutch crunch bread . Based on the waiting experience alone I was ready to be unimpressed (and also low key glad I'd never have to wait in line again) but I was actually blown away. The garlic sauce they add in their sandwiches was divine. Scarfed our food down in 10-15min, only eating half of the sandwich since these are massive. Food alone is a 5/5 when fresh, less impressive after it's been sitting out for a bit. Because of the experience and wait, pulling the overall rating down to a 4/5.

Yelp
It's been maybe 10 years since I've had a sandwich from Little Lucca but omg, it's still so great?? The size of it is ENORMOUS, so even though I was initially wincing at the price, NAHHH totally worth it!! It's enough for two meals honestly! I got a pretty basic turkey sandwich, but man that sauce just levels up this sandwich. Pro tip is to preorder your sandwiches and then just come to pick up, otherwise you're going to wait a while!! They always have a long line, even on a Monday!
google avatar

Yelp
A bay classic. The garlic pesto sauce is to me what they are famous for. The Dutch crunch bread is my fav option too. The lines can get long at lunch but they work through it quickly. If you are looking for a devious deli Sandwich that is stacked full of delicious meats and produce this is the spot.

Yelp
Little Lucca is still going on strong after all these years! We used to order from Little Lucca's a lot when we worked at United Airlines nearby. We've been trying several of the SSF sandwich establishments. We've tried Roma's, Grand Market Leader, Teani's. What I appreciate most about Little Luca's is the option for soft Sweet Roll !!! My combo was delicious. I love the garlic pesto spread and of course the soft roll. The deli meat is fresh, high quality and tasty (not too salty). My hubby, the vegetarian ordered the mozzarella cheese on soft sweet roll. He enjoyed it. Both our sandwiches are good sized and I could only finish half. The service is good and the sandwich makers are well trained, polite and helpful. Especially with the non stop lines that just keep coming. The atmosphere is that of a fast moving sandwich to-go establishment. They still do very brisk business especially with the original owner just down the block (Teani's). They both have plenty of business. I will definitely be back since they have the soft sweet roll!

Yelp
I was so anxious to eat that i didnt even take a picture . I got the Fire Roasted Beef and omg i love it! And the sandwich was huge! It took me two days to finish it. I had to cute it into four different pieces. The shop itself is small, a little cozy mom and pops. Their service is fast, we came early but it gets busy later on in the day. Honestly the best sandwich place and well worth the price

Yelp
The best sandwich spot I've been to! The place is very small, but the servers are all lined up and busy making sandwiches for the long line of customers. After waiting about 10 minutes, I was able to order and asked my server what her favorite sandwich was. She recommended the Tri Trip Special and so I got that. It was SO juicy! The flavor of the meat was paired well with their fresher ingredients. All their sandwiches were massive, like the size of a baby. The Tri Tip was lean and tender, and having Dutch Crunch as the bread makes the whole sandwich filled with texture. My party ate outside, and we all would go again to try other flavors!

Yelp
Though the wait is long, it is SO good. I got it delivered because I had time to kill, and the sauces on this sandwich are something so special. AND ITS HUGE. This is definitely 2 meals. There's so many options and varieties and the pricing is so good considering how much food you get. I will definitely be back, maybe in person next time!

Yelp
Genuinely one of the best sandwiches I've had in my life. I've only been here once because it's a bit of a trek from the city, but my god the Fire Roasted Steak Caesar Sandwich is unbelievable. Every ingredient - the dressing, the pepper jack, the steak, the avocado - was so, so good. It's also HUGE. I had this for lunch and was full for the rest of the day, but I didn't regret it one bit. Really cute little spot too with really kind people behind the counter. It took me almost an hour to get here but would do it every day if I could.

Yelp
Came in early (9am) before my drive to LA and picked up 4 sandwiches for the folks at home. They have an old parking lot adjacent to the building. Interior is very small and the spot usually has a line out the door. Friendly service; menu items have not changed in years. Ordered 2 Fire Roasted Steak, Chipotle Chicken Caesar & the Spicy Buffalo Sandwich. All were so good after we reheated everything in the oven. The bread was soft yet still crunchy. But what really makes the sandwich so great, is the Garlic & Hot Pepper Spreads. As my sister would say, deliciousness. Bay Area classic!

Yelp
I've had Little Lucca's sandwiches in Burlingame but this was my first time frying the South City location. The sandwiches are MASSIVE and can most likely be consumed by four people. Call ahead and bypass the line. You can go to the front and pick up your sandwich. They are always very, very busy; it's a popular sandwich place for sure. I'm going to be honest here--the sandwiches are not above three stars. I think some times we equate more with great and this isn't the case. I had the spicy buffalo sandwich and the chicken was just some random chicken tender that didn't taste that great. The nice thing about a sandwich place is that you can try a variety until you find the one you want. The thing that does stand out here is the Dutch crunch. Little Lucca's is a South City staple, so it's good to try it for that reason alone. However, I don't think it's worth drives from anywhere that's more than five miles away.

Yelp
Haven't been here in a while and decided to get some lunch here today. Pastrami with everything on a Dutch crunch. The sandwiches are hefty for a reasonable price. Lines weren't too crazy at the beginning of lunch time so we were able to get in and out quickly. Never disappointed with this spot.

Yelp
Tiny sandwich that is takeout only. Best sandwich for the price in the Bay Area in my opinion. The sandwiches are huge and delicious. It is usually enough for two meals. My order is usually the fire roasted steak on Dutch crunch. The only con, is that they do not toast their bread, so it can be soggy if not eaten quickly enough.

Yelp
Visiting California from Virginia by way of Alaska and I had to get me a sammich and some of their garlic pesto & jalapeño relish! I've been coming here for decades!

Yelp
I have been going to Little Lucca for many years. The sandwiches are huge (several meals worth), there is always a line even at off peak hours and the garlic sauce is what makes it. If the garlic sauce wasn't a thing, I don't think these sandos would be worth it. Over time I feel like there is a lot less meat and more fillers - today the ends of my sandwich didn't have any meat because it doesn't cover the length of the roll. With their prices increased a lot over the last few years (like everywhere else), I might start going to other places where you get more bang for your buck (prices at Limoncello are the same!). I will still come back to Little Lucca for nostalgia but not as often sadly. It's more bread and fillers that make it big. My go to sandos: Little Lucca Combo, Turkey/Bacon/Cheese, Tri Tip Special. Extra Garlic sauce...always! For the regulars - they started offering a new Italian roll. I like it better than the dutch crunch. It's softer, pillowy and goes well with the Little Lucca Combo. It's nice having an alternative roll, give it a try!

Yelp
Bring your appetite!!! Wow. I love sandwiches and was chatting with a new friend about fave sandwich spots. All of my faves are in SF proper because I don't leave the City, but new friend said I HAD to check out Little Lucca. Sure enough, I left my phone in a Lyft which ended up in San Bruno (*facepalm* but tgod the driver didn't hold it for ransom lol). We went to retrieve the phone, and enter a treat from Little Lucca with the new friend. We grabbed my phone, grabbed sandwiches before 10:30am after a short wait in line (was a relatively quick in & out at that hour), and made it back to the City to enjoy in the sun on a park bench in Dolores. Wow. Life sure is funny sometimes. At first I was overwhelmed by options & could not decide. I was learning toward chicken parm or chicken cordon bleu (is a fam fave recipe), but ended up going with the ultimate club after I heard someone in front of us ordering it. After all, bacon makes everything better! I chose provolone for my cheese & that was the right decision! 10/10. The sandwich is literally longer than the length of my face (see photo, I'm 5'6" for reference) & honestly enough for three meals (I eat well but the amount of bread & protein def can be spread out lol or YOLO & eat it all at once, you do you, booboo!). I ate half and saved the other for din...I'm sitting here typing this at 4:45pm & my mouth is watering thinking about sinking my teeth into it! New friend got the Buffalo Chicken with ranch (spicy ranch? Or maybe the other option was spicy blue cheese? Pick one of the two for this sando). I had a bite and can definitely understand why it is his fave. He is a big dude and still saved half for later. I don't have a car so won't be making frequent treks to LL, but if you're in the 'hood, it's def worth a visit (or five)! Photo included is of sandwich next to my head, I'm 5'6" for context ;)

Yelp
These sandos are nuts! They are huge and well priced. The garlic sauce is BOMB. I got the corned beef and the meat quality was amazing. I highly recommend!

Yelp
I've been living in south SF and Little Lucca is a sandwhich shop that is ALWAYS busy. We came 30 minutes before it closed and it took 30 minutes for our sandwich to be made because of the line. Once you find an order you like, it's definitely worth coming but it was a lot of trial and error for me, but so far this spicy buffalo is definitely my favorite. Since it's an older shop, the inside is definitely a little suspicious, and I feel like you need to emphasize cross contamination if you are vegetarian or vegan so be ready to do that if you have dietary restrictions.

Yelp
Decided to come to Little Lucca after dropping off a friend at SFO. This place has been in my bookmarks for nearly 2 years and I decided it was finally time to try. I came in around 1:30pm on a Friday. There was still a good amount of parking spots in their small parking lot which I was blessed with. I was afraid there would still be a lunch rush but the wait was not bad at all. When I started waiting in line, we were out the door but only had 2-3 people in front of me. I know the line can sometimes be around the corner so I was thankful I came at a good time. I think from parking, waiting in line, ordering, and paying, it was probably a 20 minute time span. They had 4 people making sandwiches at a time and when one person was done, the next customer would go up and order their sandwich. It is a very tight space for those waiting so keep in mind. Since it was my first time, I decided to order the Lucca Combo--mortadella, provolone, and salami-- after seeing majority photos and reviews were for that sandwich. I ordered it with my favorite Dutch Crunch bread and with all the original toppings that come with the sandwich. I wanted it made in its original recipe. All sandwiches come with mayo, mustard, pickles, red onions, lettuce, tomato, hot pepper sauce,& their original garlic sauce. You can definitely ask for adjustments if you want less of something or to omit something as well. When I paid and got my sandwich, it was a heavy one. I already knew I wouldn't be able to finish. The sandwich was huge when I unwrapped it. For the price, it was well worth it. It was probably around ~$15. It was basically my lunch AND dinner. The sandwich was great! Their combination of the fresh veggies, with the deli meats, their hot pepper sauce, and their garlic sauce was a perfect medley. There was so much flavor but you're still able to taste every ingredient individually. My brother had my remaining 1/4 of the sandwich and he enjoyed it as well but his spice tolerance is quite low so he thought it was spicy. I thought it was fine but the spice definitely does creep up. Overall, I'd come back again to try their other sandwich combinations!

Yelp
Little Lucca is a full deli, with a few vegetarian options (but not great for vegans or the gluten free). It's located in a small building reminiscent of a double wide trailer, they use to offer picnic tables in the back yard but that seems to be gone after the COVID-19 pandemic. They have plenty of parking in a lot nextdoor. The sandwich portions are usually large, and one sandwich can easily feed 2-3 people. I ordered the vegetarian (cucumber, sprouts, avocado, cheese) it was $12 and I couldn't eat more than 1/2. I highly recommend adding their garlic sauce (green), and the hot pepper sauce (lighter green sauce that is not very spicy).
