17 Excellent Old-School Italian Spots In London - London - The Infatuation
"This Highbury charmer has enough red gingham tablecloths and overflowing bread baskets to really scratch that “molto bene, baby” itch. But Little Sardegna’s secret ingredient sets it apart—an owner who will meet your needs with the love and efficiency of a private doctor. Albeit a doctor who pours overflowing glasses of Sardinian Nieddera like it’s your 18th birthday and has a cluster of chatty friends stationed by his rustic open kitchen. The stand-out Sardinian specialities like the doughy culurgiones and supersized shards of pane carasau also make it ideal for anyone suffering from bolognese fatigue." - jake missing, heidi lauth beasley, rianne shlebak
Little Sardegna - Review - Highbury - London - The Infatuation
"Every neighbourhood in London has a great little place that makes us want to risk the one-click instant-depression of Zoopla house prices to see if we could be their neighbour. When it comes to Highbury’s Blackstock Road, that place is Little Sardegna. In case the red gingham tablecloths and overflowing bread baskets don’t give it away, this is a classic of the cosy old-school Italian joint genre with a special ingredient—an owner who will meet your needs with the love and efficiency of a private doctor. Albeit a doctor who pours overflowing glasses of Sardinian Nieddera like it’s your 18th birthday and has a cluster of chatty friends parked by the kitchen who all share the same contagious dirty laugh.

It’s a great place to hit up if you fancy a big bowl of pasta but have a case of bolognese fatigue. The Sardinian specialities include the must-order doughy, mint-peppered culurgiones with a chunky tomato sauce. Whether you’re looking for a casual date spot that’s secretly swoon-ready or a catch-up for under £40 per person, it’ll fit the bill. And when that inevitable ‘I never want to leave’ feeling strikes, know that the owner is partial to ignoring his own closing hours for another glass of red and a friendly natter.
Food Rundown
Bread Basket
We’ve never met a bread basket we didn’t like but this is one for the books. The focaccia is extra soft and primed as the perfect ragu sponge, but the huge, crispy, light shards of pane carasau had us entering a private pact to still eat our tagliatelle even if we nibbled clean every single crumb. If you’re new to this traditional Sardinian flatbread, be prepared to spend the rest of your life adjusting your toaster settings to try and achieve this perfect level of crackle and crunch.

Tagliatelle Al Ragu
A solid plate of pasta that’s less conversation stealer, more satisfying hunger buffer. You get an unashamedly generous amount of rich ragu that’s a touch sweet, with a loving sprinkle of parmesan.

Culurgiones
Culurgiones mean never having to pick between gnocchi and ravioli again. Each al dente dumpling is packed full of potato and pecorino, and the little flecks of mint really speak to this being a dish designed to be consumed in a climate where it would never matter if you forgot an umbrella. Order this, think about it incessantly, return, and order it again.

This little restaurant with super cozy climate serves amazing food just like in Italy. Italian chef is doing an amazing job. The staff is very nice and helpful. I truly recommend this place for dinner in Italian climate.

Authentic food, delicious! A small menu, but they don’t need anything flash. The caprese salad was the freshest and tastiest I’ve ever had!

We had a best time and most delicious Italian food ever! I was with my four Italian friends who are very opinionated about their good food and they all loved it too. Will be definitely coming back and have given the name and address to about four people already as am still buzzing with the experience. Will be back soon! Thank you so much and keep up the great work!!

A true authentic taste of Italy in a non-pretentious neighbourhood spot.
We had a very very good meal recently, we all ordered from the specials board and it was some of the nicest pasta I’ve ever had.
It was incredibly authentic and felt like being transported to Italy, we left the restaurant half expecting to be greeted with whizzing Vespas!
Very reasonably priced, proper traditional service - would certainly go back

After going to many Italian restaurants in the UK and being disappointed each time, I had given up the idea of ever going to another. And then, strolling down Blackstock Road one day, I spotted this rather unassuming-looking place, a Sardinian restaurant that, from the menu and a brief chat to the chef, looked interesting; so I booked. Wonderful! The food is authentically Italian - generous portions of very tasty food: great antipasto (mixed salamis and pecorino), delicious bread basket, pasta (Sardinian gnocchetti), affogato. Yum! Grazie! Torneremo!

Yelp
I had the Malloredus (gnocchis with sausage ragu,) which was excellent. The gnocchi were firm, tasty sausage/sauce, left me wanting more.
The organic house red, 'sinis rosso', is ok, but a bit pricey at £4.5 a glass.
The tiramisu here is pretty good, the mascarporne is perfectly firm, yet with just enough yield. It could perhaps do with a bit more of a 'coffee' taste.
All in all, a nice place in the neighbourhood, with a nice warm feeling.
Will definitely come back.

Yelp
Excellent meal. The tagliatelle with porcini mushrooms and sausage was delicious. Paired with the house red wine, it was phenomenal. Marcello, the owner, was the perfect host.

Yelp
I had a lvoely time here this evening and really enjoyed by salad and wine. Lovely to see a few neighbours in here as well and will certainly be coming back.
I think the boss was a bit caught out with a full house on Thursday and did a great job keeping on top of the orders - well done !!

Yelp
Went here with my parents and my dad is an Italy-lover, so he's well versed when it comes to good Italian food. Our conclusion: Great food and lovely service in a rustic sardinian ambience. We had the antipasti plate and typical sardinian bread for a starter, which was absolutely delicious. After that, the Culurgiones, Linguine Mare and another Pasta plate (forgot the name). All of it was really good and the portions were perfect. I can also recommend the Tiramisu! Definitely coming back again :)

Yelp
This is my go-to restaurant in Islington. Best pasta, friendliest staff, and really charming atmosphere. I'm never disappointed.

Yelp
Went for dinner here last night and it was wonderful! Great atmosphere, super friendly staff and fantastic food. I had the special that day of pumpkin tortellini with crispy sage and nduja sauce, and my friend had the pappardelle with sausage, mushrooms and cherry tomatoes. Both were great but the tortellini stole the show, a perfect blend of creamy pumpkin filling and a spicy kick from the nduja...mmm. We had a carafe of house red and that was better than the average house option. All in all, urge anyone to check it out; a perfect local italian serving the real deal.

Yelp
The best restaurant in this area by some margin. I'm always cautious about using words such as 'authentic' but there is certainly the sense on entering this place that one has stepped into a little bit of Italy which has somehow been relocated to Highbury. Simple furnishings but wonderful food (with an emphasis on seafood). Been here many times and never been disappointed. Menu for vegetarians (like me) is limited but the specials are usually fantastic, most recently pumpkin gnocchi with plentiful chilli and garlic in the sauce. A carafe of house red is inexpensive and very quaffable.

Yelp
Looking for somewhere to go for a bottle of wine en route home we found ourselves winding our way down Blackstock Road with the ever present threat of a down pour. The first place looked like an old man's boozer- the second, that had seating outside which was what we were really after (under awnings of course) had some strange guy, with eyes pointing in different directions and insults aimed at anyone passing by sitting outside drinking hinself into an early grave. We were running out of options and getting ever further from home. Why don't we try there my girlfriend suggested. English and hesitant I voiced my doubts that a restuarant would be happy for us to just order drinks. I was wrong. We sat ourselves at the only table outside, under the protective cover of the awnings and ordered a bottle of their house white. It was delicious and so affordable (compared to so many other places where the wine costs a bomb and tastes rather reminiscent of pee) we decided to treat ourselves to a light bite. We ordered a cheese platter. Olives arrived quickly followed by a basket of mixed bread, levened and unlevened and a plate of cheeses to make your mouth water, best of all, the super fresh ricotta in the middle, drizzled with honey. Perfect. We watched the diners inside tuck into all sorts of appetizing things and remarked at the wonderful smells that were coming from inside and made a promise to ourselves that we would be back soon to have a proper meal.
