The Best Dive Bars in San Francisco | Eater SF

"This Lincoln Street institution is a welcoming space for patrons with well gin and tonics, an aux cord in the back by the dartboard to play music on, tiny bags of Cheetos, and super comfy couches. Located just across the street from Golden Gate Park, the Shamrock remains a hallowed haunt as a place for the last round of the night, right off the Muni line for westsiders." - Lena Park

12 Best St. Patrick’s Day Destinations in San Francisco | Eater SF

"Built in 1893, this is the oldest bar in the Sunset and one of the oldest in the city. With its collection of board games, darts, backgammon tables, mystery novels, couches, and Tiffany lamps, the Shamrock is a particularly good bar for whiling away a foggy afternoon with friends, and its abundance of TV screens make it a popular spot to watch a game." - Paolo Bicchieri

Little Shamrock is the perfect little slice of Ireland in all its glory in the big city of San Francisco. Lovely pub and kind bartenders. The ambience is great, they have a lot of fun games for you to enjoy. Great options for drinks as well. Loved the vibe and gonna go again soon

Google
Fun time. Loved the dart room in the back where you could even connect to the sound system and place your own music. Cash only though! ATM on site. But bring cash if you dont want to pay fees. Its a gem!

It is another institution here in SF. Serving since 1893 which makes it second oldest bar in the city after The Saloon in North Beach. Bar has changed ownership three times until today. You can play all kind of board games, pool & dart. Bathroom is long as well:))

Went here for the first time last night and the VIBES WERE GOOD. The bartender Dylan really makes you feel at home. Can't wait to go back !

This is a Historic Lounge. Its a second oldest Lounge in SF since 1893. I didn't know about it when me and my friends visited it for the first time few years back. During our first visit we just randomly found this place as it was opened till late. It has couches and was very cozy so we really liked this place. After long time we recalled this place and wanted to go again. We tried searching it but couldn't find. They take cash so there wasn't any credit card transaction to find the name of this place. I tried searching lounges and bars on google but this place name never showed up. Then after few years I decided to drive to SF and search this place. I drove by all near by streets but couldn't find and was disappointed. Then finally I went to one restaurant (from where we searched this lounge previously) and yelped for lounges. I looked at all the nearby lounge pictures and in one of them I saw couches. So I suspected that it should be that lounge only. I drove there and as soon as I entered I was so happy to finally found it. I immediately ordered Gimlet. They have the best Gimlet. I sat on the couch and searched about this place. I found out that its the 2nd oldest lounge in SF since 1893. There was a huge earthquake in 1906 and this place survived it. There was one clock in this lounge which stopped ticking in that earthquake. They still have that clock. Its really awesome lounge and reasonable price. Its cash only and they have atm inside.

Yelp
This has got to be one of the cutest and coziest little pubs in all of San Francisco! We popped in here when the wind really started whipping to get warmed up and didn't want to leave. First, and absolutely best of all, it is very.dog frindly! Our little baby was welcomed in and got to meet at least three other pups! The whole vibe was super casual and they had comfy couches and a real fire going in the fireplace. They had great Christmas decorations and good music and I absolutely recommend the hot buttered rum. It was delicious!! With warm service and great ambiance, this is the perfect place to spend a couple of hours relaxing or catching up with friends. I can't wait to come back here again on our next visit to the city.

Yelp
The Little Shamrock is a historic neighborhood bar nestled inside the Inner Sunset District of San Francisco across the street from Golden Gate Park. The iconic San Francisco bar first opened in the 1890s and continues to be a strong standing establishment to this day. The bar does not serve any food. I ordered an old fashioned cocktail. Which I enjoyed a lot. Service is friendly and the bartenders are chatty and make you feel welcomed. Be sure to stop by The Little Shamrock If you are ever in the sunset District and I'm looking to warm up after a day in the park.

Yelp
The interior is fun..board games..dart boards..neat collection on walls...beer and etc..mostly beer to serve and cider...near the park...old bar that's been here near the bus stop..haha

Yelp
A great little bar, will definitely be back. The bartender was quick and friendly, people were having a good time. I did a little drawing in the corner and thoroughly enjoyed myself.

Yelp
I love this place. Great owners. Great bartenders. Great drinks. Guinness. Irish Coffees with fresh cream. Love it.
google avatar

Yelp
I think either the oldest or 2nd oldest bar in SF (maybe in California?). Great bar. A true classic. I have been here a hundred times in the last 20 years. They have been open for 130 years now. Cheers to 130 more.

Yelp
Perfect dive bar. Bring cash. Love stopping here pre-botanical garden at Golden Gate Park for a little warm-up. I see a lot of folks ordering the Irish coffee. Maybe one day but I usually order a cider and Jameson. Favorite time to visit is a cold wet afternoon. *chefs kiss

Yelp
A great spot to warm up at after a day at Golden Gate Park, given its convenient location and cheap prices. Cash only though. But there's an atm ont he back. More seating than it looks and there's two or three dart boards in the back. There's poker cards and a few board games to choose from. Bartender was super nice and they had enough variety on tap and a full bar so we were able to get our Irish coffees and White Russians no problem. Would definitely come back :) PS there's no food served

Yelp
Thankful it's still here! Dropped by on a random midweek early evening. Same old vibe of guys bullshitting on one end of the bar, Val's seat still reserved, celebrity death pool still hanging in its usual spot. The faces in the death pool have changed since I was last in, but one of the old bartenders is still there chatting with the regulars and being attentive as usual. I miss being a regular here but it's impractical for me to maintain a presence here as I no longer work nearby or live in town. Still cash only; they still don't sell food but are cool with you bringing some in from nearby restaurants.

Yelp
This place was my home for a couple of nights while I was in town for TRPS. This is a great little bar that offers a cozy spot to hang out and catch some sports while you sip on some cheap drinks and make new friends. I was staying in and around Golden Gate Park and saw this place and knew I had to pay a visit. Its a cash-only spot and there is an ATM on site. There is plenty of bartop seating and tables and chairs and a living room-style lounge with some darts in the very back. They make a damn good michelada and I had some great conversations even though I was from out of town. Look forward to coming back in 2023. CHEERS!!!!

Yelp
Best Diet Pepsi in town. The staff is friendly and environment is fun for all. Especially Bob with her washboard abs. Oh yeah, the Guinness and Irish coffees are top tier as well.

Yelp
Such a unique gem of a bar! The furniture and decor are one of a kind and the staff is friendly and funny. Music is always great and no other bar in town can brag about having vintage backgammon tables. Cash only but ATM on site past the cool dart room.

Scs S.

Yelp
Love this place!! Super cute dive bar with an Irish theme. Bring cash or they have an atm in the back. Reasonable prices and kind staff. Super cozy and low key vibe with comfortable couches and chairs. They have a selection of games to play as well. Hope this place is around for years to come!
google avatar

Yelp
Cozy neighborhood bar with over 120 years of history, great regulars, even better bartenders, and the best drink prices in the neighborhood. If you don't like this place, we're probably not going to be friends.
google avatar

Javier B.

Yelp
Better bars close by. Bartender was very rude. It's only cash and had only enough cash for 2 drinks. Bartender got mad and called me out loudly on why I didn't tip. Explained to him that I only had so much cash on hand. Almost no one carries cash nowadays. I'd rather go somewhere else where they treat their customers with some respect.

Yelp
Very friendly atmosphere. Great staff and lots of nostalgia. Nice place to chill......
google avatar

Yelp
Shamrock epitomizes the phrase "neighborhood bar". Every time I go up to order a drink at the door, there are folks saying "Hi" or doing small talks with the bartenders. I am simply glad that the good vibes are still going on here these days. They have a fixed menu of cocktails available at the moment, but they are all stiff and tasty, so you won't be disappointed with whatever you get.
google avatar

Dave U.

Yelp
This is a no frills bar with lots of character. Cash only is their motto. The woman behind the bar was attentive and friendly. She handles the entire place. Eager beer drinkers line up at the bar for their favorites brews. They offered lots of IPA on tap along with the standards. There are tables with games and the place was full of people who just seemed to call this place home. I was amazing at the old fashioned cash register. I didn't get a photo but I did snap a quick photo of the Fireball machine.

Yelp
HORRIBLE EXPERIENCE!!!! My fiancé and I popped in for some drinks, and the bartender asked if we were vaccinated. We told her yes, and she asked to see our I.D's. My fiancé thought she meant his vaccination card, which we did not have with us because we did not know it was required to show at a bar. So he answered "i don't have it". I knew he misinterpreted what she said, so i was about to correct him when the bartender proceeded to say "well you can fuck off then on the sidewalk outside." We both were taken aback by this, and I tried to explain that it was miscommunication to the bartender. She was short and continued to be extremely rude to the both of us, even as we showed her our I.D's. Completely and totally unprofessional and uncalled for. We were just trying to have some nice drinks, and were not looking for any type of argument. Management needs to reevaluate who they hire to represent their establishment. This lady was unprofessional, and quite honestly very trashy with the language she used towards us. Do yourself a favor and go to the Mucky Duck instead. Just down the street, and doesn't come with a side of trash.

John R.

Yelp
A few years ago I'd have given the Shamrock five stars but unfortunately the day shift bartender they have now is honestly one of the rudest obnoxious bartenders I have ever had the misfortune to meet, wait until after 8pm when she's off shift then the atmosphere improves, she just stands in the far corner with the daily regulars are pretty much ignores anyone that's not one of her pals, getting a drink is a frickin nightmare,I work in the trade so I always tip well because I know how hard the job can be,this is one bartender I'll never do that with, its only the night bartenders and Val that make this place tolerable anymore. It's a shame when one crap bartender can screw up a bars previously excellent reputation.

Yelp
Great community dive bar in Inner Sunset, directly across from GG park! It's been around since 1893 and is the second-oldest bar in SF! Cash only, darts in back, lots of seating.
google avatar

Yelp
Update from my recent post - if you want to get your shimmy shammy shake on stop on by!

Cameron T.

Yelp
Regulars only I guess... I got kicked off of a table because an off-duty bartender wanted to reserve it for her friends who were coming by later. To add insult, she was just plain mean about booting me and even mocked me when I left the bar because there was nowhere else to sit. I don't normally review places online but this place seriously sucks.
google avatar

Cristina S.

Yelp
Their female bartender needs to be fired. Apparently, yelling at, and berating, customers is her version of customer service. I've been coming here for years; it's conveniently located near the park and other restaurants and they were smart enough to convert to take-away drinks during the pandemic. All of that is good -- until you get this bartender. Friend and I stopped in yesterday for a quick drink after walking through the park, and she proceeded to yell at friend and demean in front of the whole bar because we didn't know it was cash-only (when every other business has converted to no-cash). THEN, she was completely unhelpful when friend was trying to figure out where their ATM was. This may be her version of customer service, but it's not mine. And I won't spend a cent there again.
google avatar

Yelp
$5 beers?! That is unheard of in the city. My friend and I were very lucky to stumble across this place one night. We were supposed to go to the museum but tickets sold out and we wanted to figure out something to do while we waited for our friends who did get in. We talked to the security there and she mentioned to visit the little shamrock. Just half a mile away from the museum. This security guard is also a bartender at this spot. I wish I could remember her name! Very friendly lady she is. $5 beers, is a bargain in the city especially since I'm not from there. We went around 7 pm and it as quiet and plenty of available seating on nice furniture, couches, chairs. They have table games available. I like that the bartender would come up to us and ask if we wanted drinks instead of having to go up to the bar. Next time I'm in town I'm coming back for good priced quality beer.

Yelp
I am new to the neighborhood and was extremely excited to try this local hangout once I moved here. Unfortunately, this was interrupted by the shelter-in-place. I was thoroughly impressed by Bob or Bobby who wrote a post on Nextdoor offering tips on making the perfect quarantine cocktail. This made me even more excited to try this place once it opened. Fortunately, I had the awesome experience of taking advantage of their weekly pop-up and indulged on one of the best Irish Coffees (okay neck and neck with another famous place...no names mentioned). What set Little Shamrock apart from this said famous place is their amazing customer service and spunky personalities and small neighborhood charm. Now I really can't wait to be able to fully enjoy the experience once SIP is lifted. Keep up the great work!

Yelp
I'm glad that this bar reopened, since I've never really gone there before, but my uncle's girlfriend and I did stop by to get some Thai chicken wraps in addition to a chips and hummus combo and a large cookie to share (plus Irish coffee, yum). The chicken wrap is pretty decent and the chips and dip really hit the spot too. The best part? The cookie and the Irish coffee and I even had fun dipping the piece of cookie into my coffee. I can't wait to come to this bar for sure one day!

Yelp
We came solely for the fireplace. It was crowded on a this past Friday night and not my vibe. Nothing bad just not for me. We got our drinks fast. Not many spots available to be situated inside. We did get to be next to the fireplace though. I didn't think it was super loud or anything. But, I thought it was too loud to be reading at the bar which I did spot, someone, doing: to each their own. They didn't have Hornitos so I was stuck with Cazadores, and I didn't like it at all. We all left after I finished my drink.
google avatar

Rachel R.

Yelp
Big fan of the Little Shamrock! Definitely a neighborhood vibe, dog friendly, grab a pitcher of beer and play some board games! On a Saturday night it was busy but not at all crowded. There was plenty of space for people to leisurely hang out or play a game of choice (they've got 2 Backgammon tables and many more game options). CASH ONLY is important to note.
google avatar

Aryana N.

Yelp
Perfectly chilled drinks. When you get a drink in a big ice cold glass it can taste completely different (and a thousand times better than) from a bottle. Came in and realized as I went to post this that they weren't technically open yet (1 pm, yelp days they open at 2) but the bartender was perfectly friendly and quick. There's also a very cute small dog here that hasn't barked at all so what more could you ask for? Cash only! ATM in the back

Rachel H.

Yelp
0 stars if we could. We were so excited to be able to get St. Patrick's day drinks since my best friends birthday was today. Felt racially profiled because only our black friend was asked for her ID and they REFUSED to serve her after ASSUMING she had given them a fake ID. (In case you're wondering, she doesn't have a fake ID we all recently turned 21 , and one of us was turning 22 today). Our licenses are for AZ and she said my friends ID was fake and we needed to leave. Not only did we say the ID was real but she requested a second form of ID such as her debit card. The employee still refused her service even after showing her debit card with her name on it. Again the only person who she checked their ID was for our black friend and the employee refused to explain why she thought her ID was fake. This ruined my friends birthday and the rest of our night.

Yelp
A bar with games! Always a good time. There's a decent amount of seating but it can get full easily.
google avatar

Yelp
Cozy little bar right by Golden Gate Park! It feels almost cluttered (in a good way) with homey decorations and interesting trinkets, and there's so much to look at right when you step in. This is very much a "sit around a table with friends and chat over beer" type of bar and it doesn't have a dance floor. Tons of bar and table seating (seating really makes up most of the bar space) with cool antique-looking furniture but it does get crowded very easily and you might struggle to snag a spot. We also saw some darts and other games near the back but unfortunately didn't have a chance to play. On our visit, we got a full pitcher of beer to share among four people for around $23 and it was more than enough for everybody to have around 1 or 2 drinks. Service was excellent, with the bartenders quickly serving up our drinks and staff coming by to clear off empty glasses and wipe down tables pretty frequently. We were at Little Shamrock for around 2 hours later at night, and at its peak busy hour the atmosphere was loud and boisterous, while near the end of the night when the bar was slowly emptying out it became super chill and relaxed. Small note that there's a water dispenser with small water cups near the back of the bar next to the couch seating area, but it ran out while we were there and they didn't get around to refilling it. We asked one of the bartenders and she was more than happy to get us some water from the bar! Overall, would definitely recommend if you're looking for a chill bar to relax with friends! Just remember to bring cash because they are cash only.

Yelp
Historic bar located in San Francisco's Inner Sunset neighborhood is worth the visit just to see the cool clock that stopped working the day of "the big one": no tick since April 18, 1906. Came in from the cold to enjoy a few games of backgammon and soak in some local ambiance. Instead, experienced a rude bartender who didn't speak, just gestured towards the "cash only sign" then to the ATM machine. When asked for water, she could only point at the jar of water for self-serve in cups tinier than ones used at the dentist office to rinse. Served tepid and weak excuses for "Irish Coffees" ($10). Not willing to try anymore cheap drinks, headed to the Buena Vista Cafe for a real Irish Coffee that cost less, was hot, hefty with booze that hit the spot.
google avatar

Andrew H.

Yelp
Best bar in the Sunset. Great bartenders, great patrons, great atmosphere. Very cozy place to sit and relax, enjoy a board game, play some darts. Some of the best coffee (Irish or otherwise) around. No food served, but you're welcome to bring your own. Cash only, but there's an ATM on premises.

Yelp
My buddy just moved back to town from grad school and it's always fun talking shop over a beer. The Little Shamrock proved to be a great place to do it in. This bar is over 100 years old and still standing even after a handful of big quakes. I ordered a more modern snakebite, which was loaded up with a slight cider bias, just the way I like it. There's plenty of seats available and the bartender is responsive when you place your order. Prices are super great too, and I think everything was about $5, but it might have been happy hour. The location is right at the foot at the park so it's convenient as a stop in between museum shows. A great place to have a conversation during the afternoon, I bet it's just as great or boozing with big groups in the evenings. Food: 7/10 Service: 7/10 Price: $ Atmosphere: 7/10

Michael E.

Yelp
This place is fun. It's one of the oldest bars in SF, it has a good board game collection, and clean private bathrooms.
google avatar

Yelp
Anxious to stop by for a drink since I am a fan of John Lescroart's mystery novels which are centered in SF. The Little Shamrock is frequented by many of the fictitious characters in his books. This place is just as described in Lescroart's books. No frills, serious drinks, friendly bartenders, local crowd and, has been around for 120 years! Will definitely return when doing something in Golden Gate Park. Right on the edge of the park.
google avatar

Ruth K.

Yelp
I came to this bar because it's a character in John Leschoat's books. Loved its quaint ambience.
google avatar

Yelp
Great Irish bar in operation since the late 1890s! My boy and I hit this place up every blue moon. Low key enough to chill and busy enough to feel an electrifying energy in the air. Check it out to see what a real Irish-American bar feels like. Slanté!
google avatar

Yelp
Looking for love in all the wrong places. No, seriously, I am. So, I've thrown myself into dating and, oh boy, am I too old for this! I met my date on a Monday night here. It was quiet on the night I went with the bar less than half full. The bartender seemed very nice and friendly. The drinks were cheap ($12 total for wine and a diet coke with well vodka) but my drink had no kick. Nice ambiance and, again, nice bartender. She hollered out goodnight to us as we left. Nice touch.
google avatar

Priya V.

Yelp
Friendly and fast service. Nice selection of drinks! The Irish coffee & cookie really cozied up a foggy day at golden gate park.

Yelp
My friend left his ID at your bar before COVID shelter in place. Could you possibly get in touch with me to set up a return? Thanks!

Yelp
The Little Shamrock is a fun little dive bar in the Inner Sunset, right on the edge of Golden Gate Park. We were walking around the botanical gardens and wanted to find a fun place to play some games, have a conversation, get some cheap drinks, and watch the game. We got all of that here. They also have a big section to throw darts in the back, which is always a fun activity! If you are looking for a laid back dive bar in the area, this is the place to come to!
google avatar

Jason K.

Yelp
Bobby is awesome! Fabulous bartender. Drinks are good and prices fair. Love the good vibes and fun games. Great place to unwind with friends and relax after a nice walk in Golden Gate Park! Cheers!
google avatar

Jamie L.

Yelp
My FAVORITE Sunset bar. Attracts a really solid crowd of people (mostly locals and industry folk)-- good for reading a book and/or socializing. I've met so many wonderful people here-- games, books everywhere, and a dartroom in the back where you can plug in your OWN iPhone to play your music! It's like walking into your best friend's living room... If that wasn't enough, they ALSO let you bring in your own food! You can grab burritos at Gordos and cheap beers here-- and have a fabulous evening.
google avatar

Tracy A.

Yelp
This is an amazing cash only, warm and friendly bar near my work. They do the best Irish Coffees and even a sassy hot toddy if you are losing your voice, like I was, due to an annoying cough.

Yelp
Little Shamrock and I, we've got a good thing going. Yes, the place has a bit of a musty smell (with the occasional whiff of reefer sprinkled in). And no, the seats and tables don't feel the cleanest (tip: ditch the cloth, fabric seats for some plain old wooden chairs). However, despite being not nearly as popular as nearby Blackthorn and Yancey's (possibly/probably for the aforementioned reasons), Little Shamrock offers nearly just as much. The area by the bar has a half dozen or so TV's and tables (including a couple of backgammon tables), as well as a collection of board games you can grab and play. In addition, there's a little "lounge" area by the bathrooms (it feels like someone's basement) and a back room with a couple of dartboards, some additional tables, a small TV, and an ATM. Still not all THAT impressive? You're right, it's not. The bartender is really nice though. Oh, and pints of beer are just $4. Yeah, that's right...$4! Even if you were to say that's the only good thing about the place, it still was enough to get me to come back a second time. Of course, it didn't hurt much that the Giants won the two World Series games over the weekend that my buddy and I came here to watch. Nope. NOT. AT. ALL. THREE AND A HALF STARS rounded up for fairly obvious, championship winning reasons. #OrangeOctober CASH ONLY.

Yelp
The Little Shamrock is the type of place that I can take my whole family to. That says a lot. My sister would be excited by their board game selection and comfortable seating. My brother would love their abundant supply of playing cards, darts, and of course their cheap drinks and free flowing pop-corn. My mom would enjoy the casual people watching and the charming fireplace and my dad would admire the Welsh flag hanging proudly by the front entrance. The Little Shamrock is by far my favorite hangout in the area. There's never any pressure to order drinks, and there's a wealth of homey seating in the place. There's a little of everything here to satisfy any group and it's also conveniently located right by the 71 line as well as a plethora of incredible restaurants and food businesses. If you've never been to The Little Shamrock - remedy that Waaaaaysap. Not only is it a beautiful example of San Francisco's past - but it's a lovely part of San Francisco present as well. Trust.
