This was my first time at this location. I came here with a couple of my girlfriends for happy hour. I enjoyed the happy hour at the Redondo Beach location, and we were meeting someone who was staying near LAX, so this location was more convenient. The location is good, and the ambiance in the restaurant is modern. I was surprised to see that it was not busy since the other location seems to be bustling.
To order from the happy hour menu, we had to sit at the small bar area, and we ended up sitting at the bar. The bartender, Igor, was nice and pleasantly greeted us.
My friends ordered drinks from the house selection, but I wanted something different, so I asked the bartender to make something unique for me, and he made a blood orange drink with tequila. It was okay, not great.
We ordered several dishes from the essentials menu (happy hour menu).
port, shrimp, and crab dumpling - this was delicious, and the broth was just right. We all enjoyed it.
green papaya salad - I enjoyed this at the Redondo Beach location, but this dish was a little too fishy, and the papaya was not as crunchy. My friends did not like it at all, so I ended up eating this alone.
spicy lemon grass chicken wings - a little salty, but we enjoyed it.
pho bo - it was okay. Definitely does not compare to a nice bowl of pho from a more traditional pho restaurant. The soup came out lukewarm, the broth was bland, and the meat was tough. It came out with a very small plate of bean sprouts and basil.
grilled lemongrass chicken banh mi - this was good. The vinaigrette was tasty, and the veggies were crunchy.
Almost at the end of our meal, I wanted a little bit of rice. I asked Igor about the rice selections, and I thought perhaps ordering a "little rice," which is the kid's menu fried rice. Igor suggested xoi sticky rice. He said it was his favorite, and we should definitely try it. So we did.
xoi sticky rice - The sweet rice is cubed and fried. There was lop cheung pork floss (very chewy), slow egg (over-medium fried egg), and other ingredients that I could not make out. Only two of us tried it, since one of my girlfriends does not eat pork. We had one cube each and could not finish it. I did eat the egg without all the stuff on top. We told Igor that we did not like it, and he said, "I am sorry," and he took the dish away. When we got the bill, it was still on the bill. We told him that we did not enjoy the dish and that he should take it off the bill. He told us to wait because he had to ask his manager. He came back a few minutes later and he said, "The manager told me that we cannot take it off the bill because it was half eaten." What? We ordered several drinks each and many dishes. Our bill was hefty for a happy hour. They cannot comp one happy hour dish because we ate part of it? We were having a great conversation and having fun, but that gesture gave us an unpleasant taste of this location.
That tells me why this location was not as busy.
