I have been craving simple, Tex-Mex cheese enchilada. You know the kind with American cheese and gravy, not chili con carne. I was feeling Uber nostalgic. I had not had those types of enchiladas in years. Usually, I go for a shrimp, enchiladas suizas, or some other sour, chipotle or poblano cream in my adulthood.
I was grabbing burgers from Armadillos (review coming soon), and saw Little Taco Factory. I had seen it other times I had been to Armadillos, but stupidly, did not take heed. This last trip, the words "Best Enchiladas in Town!" piqued my interest given I was still in the midst of my gooey, cheesy, Tex-Mex craving. I took note to return soon.
A couple of days later I ordered the lunch special that included 2 cheese (or beef) enchiladas, rice, beans, salad (who eats that?), 2 homemade tortillas, and a sweet or unsweetened tea. What was great was that they offered the tea to go. Many places don't do that. All of this was $7.25. I decided to get one of the Ofelia's Specials that included two beef or cheese enchiladas and two tortillas for $4.25. This is the plate without rice and beans. You can get a single enchilada with rice and beans for $5.50. I wanted to try the beef enchiladas, so I got the first Ofelia's Special.
I also tried a carne guisada with cheese taco. I came back the next day and tried the carne asada ala Mexicana taco. So let's start from the bottom to the top!
At the bottom was the carne asada a la mexicana. While the meat was tender, it was pretty dry and not much flavor. Not a fan.
Next we're the beef enchiladas. They weren't bad, but I've had better and they paled in compare to...
...the cheese enchiladas. So tasty! I added a bit more salt for seasoning but nothing else was needed. The cheese was that perfect oozy goodness I was looking for. The food was so hot that the take out box was slightly warped from all that heat. This will be a repeat offender for my Tex mex cravings for sure.
The winner winner guisada dinner was the carne guisada taco with cheese. Good God Almighty!! That is quite seriously the best carne guisada in San Antonio. The gravy is rich in flavor but still delicate because the gravy roux doesn't use a heavy amount of flour. The meat is butter! Often I find guisada gravy can be overly peppery, and I love pepper, but this was seasoned perfectly and had a perfect amount of cheese. You cannot go wrong with this taco or 10 of them.
The menu is small but there are some pretty huge standouts. I think they should add their carne guisada as the best in town to their list of accolades!
Oh and they have tamales available on Wednesdays. I think Wednesday & Saturday but don't quote me on the Saturday. I know for sure Wednesdays, and they only make very small batches.
