Yelp
The other night, I walked to Little Tokyo Market Place at 333 S Alameda before they closed at 10pm. Such an array of products like I've never seen before... or at least not on this continent.
I'm sure you will be happy with the vast selection of products: sauces and condiments galore; noodles (fresh, frozen, dried, seasoned, unseasoned, etc); an extensive variety of seaweed and dried mushrooms; exotic produce (gooseberries, lychee, very cherry plums, at least 3 kinds of mangos, etc); regular produce & some organic (strawberries, blueberries, blackberries, raspberries, bananas, etc); canned coffee (Coffee Boss, iced cappuccino, UCC Hawaii Kona, Wonda, Pokka Milk Coffee, etc); tons of fresh greens and veggies (Japanese eggplants, carrots, kale, etc); pastries from their bakery (to the left as you enter the store - you pay separately), desserts, mochi, cakes, and ice cream; Wagyu beef, frozen seafood, fresh seafood (salmon, octopus, calamari); sushi... you get the idea.
They also sell personal hygiene and beauty products, cleaning supplies, cookware and utensils, and I believe they also have a small section of stationary/pens/office and/or school supplies.
Basically everything that one might expect to find in a standard neighborhood grocery store, but so much more. If that makes sense.
As good as I've made this place sound so far, there are definitely some drawbacks.
I've been here 4 times now, and they never have plain vanilla ice cream. What gives?!
Maybe it's just me or maybe I chose a bad day or time of day to get sushi here, but I spent $35 on a small sashimi platter and it was a tremendous disappointment. The fish lacked flavor and seemed kind of dried out, and all the fish sort of tasted the same. There was some sort of red cocktail sauce included which seemed kind of weird. And I really didn't care for the huge piles of tsuma that the sashimi sat upon. It all turned light pink, so I'm guessing there was some kind of food coloring added to the fish? Anyways... after a few pieces, I couldn't eat any more, so I gave the rest to my 3 cats, and they really enjoyed it!
Also, the produce here is super hit or miss. I got some disgusting Envy apples that were brown inside; the celery was dry, super stringy, and hollow inside; the strawberries tasted watery and weak; the blueberries were soft, flavorless, and tasted as if they'd previously been frozen. I decided I'm never buying produce here again, except for bananas and very cherry plums.
Prices are fairly expensive, but they do have a lot of specials and weekly sales. Two shopping trips - using a hand basket both times - almost used up my entire EBT balance. Did I mention they take EBT here? That's a bonus for sure!
Oh yeah. Last thing. I got a frozen dinner and wasn't expecting much, but it was actually very tasty!
I don't know if I'll be back, but if you decide to try this place out just know that YMMV.
