Book Bars Gain Momentum Around New York | Eater NY

"I visited Liz’s Book Bar in Carroll Gardens, a cozy, author-run spot named for the owner’s grandmother that pairs a large L-shaped bar and window seating with a curated selection of contemporary literary fiction. The space combines a cafe and bar — during the day I saw people sipping Black Acres Roastery cold brew and iced teas alongside pastries from Bien Cuit (sandwiches from Bee’s Knees were slated to arrive soon) while a kids’ corner kept little ones occupied; come 5 p.m. laptops close and the menu shifts to beers from Harlem Brewing and Threes plus organic wines from Italy and France. The emphasis on lingering and community felt intentional: people can disappear into a book unbothered or strike up conversation, which the first-time owner says has helped her connect with neighbors." - Melissa Kravitz Hoeffner

NYC’s New Restaurant Openings

"NYC’s next meet-cute spot might just be in Carroll Gardens, at Liz’s Book Bar. The book store has beer from Threes Brewing, a full wine and coffee menu, and of course, books. They’re offering three- and six-month subscriptions that get you a discount on a hardcover and a free drink every time you come into the store. The space looks cozy, with a big leather couch and a bar with stools." - will hartman

Best mint ice tea in town! Literally made the heat wave more tolerable. Kept finding myself returning to this lovely coffee shop/book bar. People were really nice, welcoming and always smiling. Great for sipping your coffee quietly watching people pass by the street or reading. The book selection, while not the biggest, is well curated. Loved everything about this place!

I love this book store!! I found a unique collection of short stories from African writers. The wine selection is great too, I loved the Cabernet Franc. The atmosphere is so cozy and the staff is great. If I lived closer, I would be here all the time. I can't wait to visit again!

Such a cute little spot in the Brooklyn area! It’s got a solid fiction selection and lots of fun drinks to enjoy in a great atmosphere! We stopped in to read for a bit with a cup of coffee and we did not regret it! Definitely drop by if you’re in the area!

My favorite — not every bookshop has comfortable places for you to sit, read and hang out. There are many book shops in Brooklyn, but this is where I feel the most welcomed. The art book selection is also impeccable. Highly recommend!

What a delightful spot to spend a Friday afternoon! From the moment I walked in, I felt welcomed into this vibrant slice of black joy. Some patrons are working, others hosting a book club over coffee, and many more are enjoying a glass of wine at the bar. I was lucky enough to be served by Danielle, the wine program manager, who recommended the perfect red for me. Highly recommend this place for a relaxing, laid-back workspace or meet up spot!

A hidden piece of perfect. Books, wine, beer and coffee. It’s nice because everyone was actually reading and enjoy a lil drink. Selection of books for purchase is great there is something for everyone. Be early to grab a seat as that’s a bit difficult if you plan to stay. They are very busy on the weekend, but overall would come back!

This place is a gem! Even though I live across Brooklyn, I love making the trek to this new bookstore and cafe that feels like peace as soon as I walk in. Congratulations on opening!! Edit: I’ve since come several times, it’s the best, my fave in the city now.

Yelp
Visiting my friend in Brooklyn and she mentioned she walked by this cute book bar and we had to try it. Relaxing music and vibe, areas to sit and read. Either bringing your own book or one on the wall, this place had it all. I got the wine flight to try and just overall had a wonderful time! (They have small bites to eat cheese board, olives, etc.) I know my friend will be a regular here.

Yelp
I love this new trend of bookstore bars and this spot will now be added to my list of favorite ones. There is ample seating, good wine, and a great book selection. What more could a book lover ask for? I didn't get a chance to try any food because they were out of most things on the menu but I look forward to visiting again and grabbing a snack. Next time I'll be sure to be there early.

Yelp
I've stopped in here twice so far: once just to check it out/do some book browsing, and then a second time to have something to drink at the bar, and also do some book browsing/found something to buy. I will definitely update later on when I've tried more drinks, etc., but my initial impression is: I love this place!!!! The staff that I've met here (two different people so far) seem really nice, cool, and friendly. I had a really good matcha lemonade and enjoyed sitting at the bar. The book selection is really good. This is not a huge storefront (but it's big enough, and they have a good amount of seating) but considering that I think they have an impressive selection. I saw that they have a selection of classics as well as a lot of contemporary fiction. I also saw some interesting-looking memoirs. They have plenty of other books too--cooking, history, humor, body-mind-spirit, etc.--and I see from their website that you can search for books and order through the site too. I look forward to coming back in more often and I'd also like to explore their in-store events, book club, etc., when I get the opportunity to do so. I hope this business will do great!!!! There aren't a lot of combined bookstore/cafe/bar spaces in this part of Brooklyn and it's definitely something I've been wanting to see.

Yelp
I don't remember how I learned about this book bar but I faintly remember the owner getting interviewed or mentioned on Instagram and I decided to visit in the future. After a busy day, I was finally able to go. On first inspection, I can see the place is well loved by locals and new people alike because while it wasn't packed it was lively on a Thursday evening. There is different types of seating including along the bar, near the front window, a nook with cushion and a few in the back. I did bar side and it has hooks underneath to hang bags. It serves as a cafe mostly so there is a limited food menu with a more extensive drink list for the morning, noon, and night. The menu is on the wall but they also have paper copies. I had a non alcoholic spritz which was decent. They do have wifi available so you can theoretically work there however, from my perusal they have limited outlets and they have a rule about no laptops after 6 pm (they have a sign near the register but you could miss it) I do believe the service is sweet and very accommodating. They checked to see if I was alright which I appreciated. The book variety is typical of many of the small independent bookstores I see in town. They do have events which I signed up for. Overall I think it is a great place to have in the neighborhood and I got much use out of it and I will be back

Yelp
Recently came here for coffee with a friend and loved the vibe! It's a coffee shop by day, wine bar by night, and bookstore all day! The staff were so lovely and plenty of people there were shopping, working, or hanging out with friends. It's so cozy and I will definitely be going back during the winter when I work from home or for coffee dates. Such a great addition to the neighborhood!

Yelp
What a cute neighborhood gem. It offers a space to read relax hang out with friends have a drink (coffee or hey try a glass of wine). Come with friends, come alone or with your dog and spend some time in this friendly inviting book bar. With good options of books. It gets pretty crowded at times. There should be more like these definitely recommend!

Yelp
Good coffee and pastries, with friendly service. I love browsing the books while waiting for my coffee. If you end up staying long enough (which it lends itself to), you might want a glass of wine from a pretty great selection.

Yelp
A brilliant concept that combines an independent bookstore, cafe, and workspace. This is by far my favorite bookbar in Brooklyn! The interior is beautiful with cozy reading nooks at every corner and a welcoming atmosphere. Definitely a great spot for both solo work sessions and casual hangouts with friends. The staff is super friendly and the versatile space caters to book lovers, remote workers, and social butterflies. Their wine and coffee menu is similar to one of a wine bar and coffee shop, with extensive options for each. You can grab a window seat with your glass of red and your favorite novel, or sit at the bar with your laptop and an espresso. This spot is understandably quickly becoming a neighborhood favorite.

Yelp
I'm sitting in the book bar as I type this and I had to leave a review. The vibe in this little spot is so fun! Nice menu, great music, and many books to choose from. Pay it a visit!

Yelp
So happy about this addition to the neighborhood! Coffee, wine, books, friendly staff, cozy & relaxing atmosphere...what more could I want? Love coming in here for quiet work time during the day, or for a pre-dinner glass of wine in the evening. Loved recently seeing a number of solo patrons enjoying a drink and a book on their own...rare to find a place where it's comfortable to do so. There's even a cute little nook with a beanbag, if you stop in with your little ones. Highly recommend!

Yelp
Great addition to the neighborhood! A good selection of books and ample space to hang out for a bit with a coffee or cocktail.
