Lloyd's Carrot Cake Shop - Review - Fieldston - New York - The Infatuation

"Lloyd’s is an iconic bakery in the Bronx that’s famous for carrot cake, and while there’s no seating or space to hang out here, it’s worth a visit because the cake is that good. Their carrot cake comes in both raisin and raisin-free options, and it’s perfectly dense, moist, and packed with flavor. You can get single cupcakes to grab and go, but note that larger quantities need to be ordered three days in advance. The carrot cake also comes in cupcake form, and they also make chocolate, vanilla, and red velvet flavors." - Carina Finn

Betty Campbell-Adams, Co-Founder of Bronx Bakery Lloyd’s Carrot Cake, Dies at 65 - Eater NY

"The marketing director turned full-time baker started Lloyd’s Carrot Cake in the 1980s with her husband, Lloyd Adams. Using a secret recipe from Adams’s Caribbean grandmother, the duo began baking carrot cakes, first out of a pizza oven in the basement of an apartment building and, later, from the bakery’s current storefront across from Van Cortland Park in Riverdale." - Luke Fortney

I discovered this bakery on Instagram and made a mental note to visit the next time I was nearby. A few weeks later, I finally had the opportunity to stop by and picked up a few slices of the various flavors they offered. First, I want to mention that this is not a large bakery at all; it appears to be a family-oriented establishment. I specifically went there for the carrot cake, which they offer with or without nuts, available either as a whole cake or by the slice. I purchased one slice of each flavor, and although I don’t remember the exact prices, they were reasonable. As for the carrot cake, it was just okay. I wasn't particularly impressed; I've had better. While it was tasty, it was a bit dry. My mom, who is the "carrot cake queen," agreed with me without me prompting her, so I knew my opinion was confirmed. On a positive note, I really enjoyed the coconut scone—it was moist and not overly sweet. I didn't taste the chocolate slice, and the strawberry slice was just okay. Overall, I believe the visit was worth it, but I might choose to pass on this bakery in the future. I do want to commend them for being a small, Black-owned business that has made a name for itself, so kudos to them!

Google
I have to say that this place has THE BEST carrot cake ever. I’ve traveled to almost 42 states and have moved over 40 times in my life, including multiple countries. This is the best place for cake HANDS DOWN! They’re very accommodating through Instagram messaging, so if you have any questions, reach out to them through there! The BEST!!!!!!

Google
I would like to start off by staying what happened to this place, me being supportive local native of this bakery for my years I can fairly distinguish the level of care and love that used to go into they cake to what I received yesterday. The craftsmanship really prompted this review paying $50 to have your cake look like third grader baking project is insane. So it’s a hit and missed for me presentation sucks , cake tasting amazing.

Google
I had a wonderful experience with this bakery. From the moment you walk in, the heavenly smell of fresh baked goods greets you, it’s absolutely mouthwatering. The staff is incredibly helpful and attentive, and they serve you promptly when you come in to pick up your order. Their cakes can be nut and raisin free. They’re automatically decorated with a warm and delicious cream cheese frosting. Messages can also be added upon request, their ordering system works so great. I have a grape allergy and was unaware that the cakes typically came with them. As soon as I brought it up, they didn’t hesitate to help me and went above and beyond to rectify the issue. Their communication throughout was consistent, respectful, and reassuring. You can tell they take great pride in their work and truly care about their customers. Parking can be a bit tricky, but if you arrive early, you might snag a spot. Either way, it’s worth the effort just be patient; these folks work incredibly hard. I’m so impressed with their service and quality that I’ll be a forever customer. Highly recommend!

Google
This charming little spot has stolen my heart—and my taste buds—with its exceptional carrot cake and unparalleled hospitality. From the moment I stepped inside, the warmth of the staff enveloped me like a cozy hug. In a world full of desserts, Carrot Cake Haven stands out as a must-visit gem. If you’re a carrot cake lover—or even if you’re just curious—do yourself a favor and stop by. Your taste buds will thank you, and you’ll leave with a smile, already planning your next visit.

Google
I was so excited to finally get to try Lloyd’s Carrot Cake, but the service I experienced at their main store was lackluster, to say the least. No warm greeting, no acknowledgment. The guy at the counter didn’t say a word to me. He was rude, but hopefully the sweet- tasting carrot will make up for the sour customer service I received.

Google
I'm an avid lover of carrot cake, and Lloyd's has the best I've ever tried. Yesterday, we visited this bakery and sampled their carrot cake, red velvet cake, and coconut cake. All of them were delicious. 5 stars!

Google
Wow!!! I can smell a cavity coming on outside the bakery. The carrot lives up to the reputation!!! If you have nut allergies do not get the carrot cake, even if you get the one without walnuts and raisins. There still maybe cross contamination.

Yelp
Great shop that does what they do very well. The carrot cake is excellent! I like it with walnuts and raisins but you can do it without too.

Yelp
Very disappointing! Many people told me the carrot cake here was so good but that was not my experience. The individual slice I bought tasted awful and was not moist but dried out - not a little dried out but like it had been left on the counter for a few days. I immediately called and they really were not interested in helping me but eventually said I should come by to exchange the inedible slice for a fresh slice. Except that didn't happen - when I stopped by (with receipt) the person at the counter would not exchange the inedible dry slice for a new, fresh slice. It boggles my mind when businesses act this way. Is it really worth the cost of a single slice of cake (a measly $5) to lose a customer? They sold me an inedible product and should have exchanged it or refunded me. Period. What a waste of time (2 trips!) and money.

Yelp
Was gifted this slice from a friend who knew I wanted to try carrot cake from here but I never have the time to stop by here. Was completely mind blown by how delicious this slice was. Amazingly moist and flavorful! Love it and can't wait to go here myself.

Yelp
I had the opportunity to try your carrot cake for the first time at a Friendsgiving party, and it was out of this world!!! I will attest to the fact that carrot cake is an acquired taste for many, and everyone really enjoyed yours! I think that this is because Lloyd's carrot cake is moist, not overly sweet, with just the right amount of frosting, and also contains bites of nuts and fruit!!! The nuts and fruit are reminiscent of a fruit cake that mom loves from a bakery from her hometown, which is wonderfully nostalgic! Fun fact, I ordered this cake on goldbelly to my house, forgot that I did not change the address on shipping, so the cake ended up somewhere else. My friend who accepted the delivery saw that it came from Lloyd's and was willing to buy the cake from me since it's that good, and was hoping not to share I let her keep the cake as a token of friendship! Of course I had to order another, and here it is!!!! I did share

Yelp
Lloyd's Carrot Cake is a famous family owned bakery in the Riverdale section of the Bronx. Founded in 1985 by Lloyd Adams and his wife Betty, who have since passed away. Today, the adult children continue the legacy of Lloyd and Betty serving many loyal New Yorkers both near and far. The delicious cake has fresh grated carrots incorporated with the main ingredients, topped with fresh cream cheese based frosting. We were introduced to the phenomenal carrot cake by the Van Cortlandt Track Club who serve it at our many award dinners and track club events and races along with prizes. During the holidays people line up around the block to pick up their wonderful cakes. You can order ahead online on Lloyd's website. Enjoy and have a Happy Thanksgiving!

Yelp
I've heard of Lloyd's Carrot Cake years ago, but was never in the area to pick some up. Finally we were close by visiting a park in Yonkers, so we made the trip to grab some. My family grew up having carrot cake on special occasions and now we will this spot as another go to. The storefront is small as there is just the front to order what you want. The day we went was very hot and because they probably have the ovens going in the back to bake all the sweets We got the carrot cake with nuts and raisins, but there is another option without in case you aren't a fan of the mix-ins. The carrot cake was moist and not overly sweet. This is perfect since you get the majority of the sweetness from the cream cheese frosting. It's perfectly balanced in each bite. They also offer other cakes if carrot cake isn't your thing. My husband is more of a chocolate fan, so he got a slice of the double chocolate cake. He liked the chocolate cake as well. Looking forward to the next slice and returning again in the future.

Yelp
Best cake I've ever had. I never thought I'd even like carrot cake but Lloyd's has me hooked. It's the best icing I've ever had on a cake. They are very quick in there and as of writing this 2 slices for my wife and I was only $10 bucks.
google avatar

Sayeeda A.

Yelp
Long lines every now and then, but worth the wait. Preorder if you can, cuts time that way. Take out only. Our favorite is the original carrot cake with nuts and raisins!
google avatar

Michael R.

Yelp
It did not disappoint. My wife and I love carrot cake and this is the best we've both ever had. We took an easy subway ride ordered two pieces and sat across the street at the park and enjoyed. This was a great start to any day. Highly recommend

Yelp
Just a follow-up from our previous review. Lloyds is STILL outstanding. Seriously, if you're reading this and wondering where to get a cake from, just stop. Look no further. You bring this cake to any event or party, people will be talking about it long after it's over. Their carrot cake is the carrot cake that all other carrot cakes are judged against. Don't like carrot cake? You'll like this one. It's just THAT good. I still haven't tried their other cakes, I'm dying to, they look great, they smell great, I'm positive they are great...but their carrot cake? I travel 2 hours for.
google avatar

Yelp
Best carrot cake ever. If you can, get one or maybe two. Worth the drive. And the german chocolate cake is awesome as well
google avatar

Yelp
I've always loved Van Courtlandt park and it certainly doesn't hurt that Lloyd's Carrot cake has it's original location right across the street from the park. My family used to frequent Lloyds quite often and I'm happy to say that not much has changed. The classic carrot cake lives on, with the option of raisins/walnuts or plain, and a varying assortment of seasonal cake offerings. They sell cake slices, cupcakes, and whole cakes of different sizes. They do ship cakes nationwide and also use some of the many delivery apps for more local service. The staff is kind, patient and efficient. The lines can get long on nice days and during holidays. If you're looking for something in particular, your best bet is to call ahead or get a custom order. There are two locations now, with an outpost in East Harlem but I always prefer to take the ride up and enjoy a slice of cake on the way back. This location doesn't have seating but the park is a great place to eat cake if the weather allows. Come here, get some treats and share with the people you love.

Yelp
Probably the best Carrot Cake around! Super moist! Full of flavor!! A great price, for the smallest cake $22.00. Delicious!
google avatar

Elie T.

Yelp
How anyone can put anything less than a 5 star review is an absolute shock! The staff, the came, the process al A++++. The owner is the sweetest and most caring person. Now, the cake was unbelievable! I'm a huge carrot cake fan and I can truly say this was the best I've ever had. It's very hard to explain what makes it so special, but something so loving is in that recipe. I wish nothing but blessings for this business and will 100% be back.

Yelp
I've been wanting to try this carrot cake. I decided to call and order my carrot cake and a slice to eat riding back to CT. When I drove up to the store front. It was at least 10 people in front of me. I decided to ask a guy in front of me if he was picking up an order or ordering. He said he was picking up. That's when I decided to walk inside to pick up my order. The ambiance smelled of carrot cake, and everyone was very friendly. This carrot cake is delicious. It's the best carrot cake ever. I enjoyed every layer from the carrots, nuts, and raisins and spices. This cake was banging. When you're in Bronx, NY, make sure you stop into Lloyd's Carrot Cake. To all my Yelpers, let's continue to eat our way through the world.
google avatar

Que B.

Yelp
Their cake is so moist and delicious. Service is always empaccableand the smell of the bakery is so tantalizing. It's right across the street from Van Courtland Park and conveniently located few blocks from the train station at 242 St.
google avatar

Mary A.

Yelp
Super tasty and huuuge! We got the plain 10" carrot cake and it was massive. I've never had lloyds before but I heard it was a local legend. This cake was a single layer of moist, not too sweet, grandma's cooking type of cake with a thin layer of frosting on top. It is a low maintenance type of cake that's easy to transfer. I couldn't get over how big it was. Every slice was huge but it reminded me to enjoy life and eat that big piece of cake hahaha. One complaint we had was that someone found a hair embedded in a piece but other than that we enjoyed it.
google avatar

Samantha H.

Yelp
Super delicious. Honestly my favorite carrot cake. Nothing tops this black owned business. Their carrot cake is top tier, very moist flavorful not over seasoned. My only criticism is I wish they had a walnut only option. They as of now only do raisins and nuts, or plain as carrot cake options only. I personally am not a fan of raisins. But it's so good I don't even care they are there half of the time. Their other cakes are great as well in case you're not a carrot cake fan. The chocolate layer cake is very good as well as their double chocolate cake.
google avatar

Ming T.

Yelp
Delicious cake, great customer service. My favorite was the carrot cake with the raisins and walnuts. The cake itself was the perfect amount of sweetness, as well as the frosting. Also glad that there was not too much frosting on it. (Like how some places/bakeries layer the cake and frosting which can be too much frosting and not enough cake cake...)
google avatar

Lorenzo M.

Yelp
Lloyd's is definitely a Bronx institution. There's nothing but love and quality in everything they bake. The customer service is great. You can see some of the magical process in action. When you enter the store. You can smell the deliciousness outside the store. The amount of baked goods that comes out of this establishment. Is unbelievable. You can also place your order online. If you're ever in the area. Get Some!!!!
google avatar

Sheba W.

Yelp
Good carrot cake. I think the over all cake was good and not overly sweet for individuals who does not like their cake the sweetest. Nice customer service as well no complaints
google avatar

Ashley W.

Yelp
Appropriately dressed in an orange awning on a discrete street by a nice park. This carrot cake with raisins and walnuts was very moist and had a lot of delicious textures. It is a little overhyped though and the frosting is way too sweet.
google avatar

Bizzy B.

Yelp
I heard about Lloyd carrots cake on IG. It was my first time trying carrot cake. The taste was so fresh and soft. Customer service was very friendly. Sometimes there can be a line outside the store and people double park their cars to pick up orders. It's worth the wait and I go there every week. Best carrot cake!
google avatar

Derrick James T.

Yelp
OMG I must say I am not a big fan of carrot cake. I asked my friend is it moist he went out of his way to drive there and get me a piece. I just tried it. I have to say I am in love this is the only carrot cake I will ever eat, this is so delicious I could not stop eating it forget dinner this is a meal in itself. Nice and moist and sweet and delicious. Any other carrot cake will not compare to this.
google avatar

Kevin V.

Yelp
Lloyds is a joke in the wall and boy do I love holes in the wall. The place is tiny but the delectable carrot cakes don't need much space because they don't stay on the shelves very long. The carrot cake is so moist and so flavorful yet not an overpowering taste. As for the frosting it's rich and creamy. The service was great too straight fast and to the point I was literally out in five minutes. Lloyds is definitely a go to for the best carrot cake for any occasion.
google avatar

Marsha E.

Yelp
I'm backkkkkk lol, less then a month later . It a Tuesday morning around 9:30am, and no crowd is there yet . This time around I got 2 carrot cake slices, and 2 red velvet slices . The carrot cake slices held their consistency in taste and texture just as the first time I tried it (just so good) . The red velvet slice was something I haven't tasted before, it was very light not to sweet and the frosting was also tasty and light . I also want to give a special thank you to the young man named Scott, who on both occasions took my order. Scott is very kind and friendly and just an all around pleasure to speak with. Mr Lloyd's his wife and his children should be so proud of this business, it's really such always a pleasure.
google avatar

Yelp
I love Lloyds Carrot Cake. From when -God rest her soul- the former owner was in charge it was bustling and the cakes were scrumptious to now-where it's not tasting as scrumptious. It's a treat that I still look forward to from time to time. It's reasonably priced, for $32 (Plain carrot cake $30 + $2 for additional frosting) I got a cake that was able to feed atleast 15 people. I did get heavy handed with the slices so I'm sure it could feed more! A con I'd like to point out is that they frost their cakes while still hot to meet the demand, while convenient for both sides, if I wanted to purchase the cake for a party, it wouldn't be presentable as is. To remedy that I purchased extra frosting for $2 which was an ample amount (!) Got some food coloring and opted for a textured, "painted" look. Totally on the fly and was praying in tongues for wisdom and hoping the birthday girl loved the outcome (she did! Hahah) Would you need to do that yourself, no? You also have the option of calling ahead and telling them it's for a special occasion but someone I knew tried to do that and it wasn't the best job. It was decent. So I recommend you try Lloyd for the name sake and decent tasting southern-ish carrot cake! I'll still buy them, maybe today the baker that usually put their foot in it wasn't there today :) but I appreciate everyone at Lloyds Carrot Cake for bringing me this cake, the friendly service and pray that your business continues to flourish and God blesses y'all always!!!
google avatar

Tonya B.

Yelp
Carrot cake is excellent, so much so that I ate it before even thinking about taking a photo. Super moist, rich tasting, the icing is perfection. My husband brought a few slices home, so I can not speak of the location. He also brought home red velvet cake and it was not as moist. They are known for their carrot cake so my rating is based on my taste buds for that. Definitely recommend the carrot cake.
google avatar

Joe F.

Yelp
Best carrot cake I've ever had, always a must stop in the Bronx/Riverdale area. Not too dense, light on the palate. Small store near Van Cortlandt Park. Great service, awesome prices. I made the recent mistake of stopping in two days before Thanksgiving and saw a line of 50+ outside but usually it's easy breezy. Be nice to yourself and make a stop here and make some friends!!

Ji L.

Yelp
I have never once been disappointed with the flavor or consistency of the carrot cake made here. In addition to buying a slice every once in a while for us, I also take them when called on to provide dessert. I also find the people who work there to be very pleasant.
google avatar

Mathew S.

Yelp
I'd tried the carrot cake from Lloyds on UWS a few years ago and didn't love it, and decided to try the carrot cake from the original Bronx location! I got one slice of plain carrot cake and one with the walnuts and raisins. I think it's an okay carrot cake, but I don't get the hype! Both were a bit dry around the edges, and the icing isn't the style I like - I think it was just confectioners sugar and water- I think carrot cake is so much better with cream cheese frosting. It was fine, but I don't think worth going out of your way or waiting a long time for.
google avatar

Mandy L.

Yelp
Recently had a slice of the carrot cake from here and I will definitely be coming back! Recommend eating it warm! Pros: - The carrot cake was filled with carrots, raisins and nuts so every bite was consistent (a bit of cake, raisins and nuts) - The portion of the slice is pretty large so I was worried that it wouldn't heat up well the next day but it tasted even better than the first day - still moist and the melted frosting was divine! Cons: - None!
google avatar

Romeo B.

Yelp
Best of the best! not too sweet perfect cream classic carrot cake!! I heard about them but then I finally went everyone in my house loved it. Best
google avatar

Jisleen T.

Yelp
This is truly a hidden gem in the riverdale area! I particularly love fruit in my cake and the pineapple and coconut cake was amazing! Prices are also very reasonable.
google avatar

Aileen M.

Yelp
After hearing all the buzz on social media, I finally decided to visit Lloyd's Carrot Cake at their original location near my house. I must say, the hype was well-deserved! Their carrot cake was delicious, with just the right balance of sweetness and spice. The cream cheese frosting complemented the cake perfectly, it was a great treat.
google avatar

Sidney W.

Yelp
The carrot cake is what their known for....! But you have to try the other cakes and pies.. like the Pecan.... OMG. I think you have to special order pies., seasonal..
google avatar

Vicky L.

Yelp
Delicious, moist, dense carrot cake!! Lives up to the hype!! Tried the one with the nuts and raisins - I'll be thinking about this cake for days.
google avatar

Taylor Z.

Yelp
The carrot cake is sublime. Really moist and on the sweeter side but just fantastic. Will definitely be back.

Debra C.

Yelp
Omg. Been hearing about this carrot cake forever. So finally heading upstate my husband n I stopped. Absolutely amazing n I am a baker and won 2 awards for my carrot cake years ago. Best carrot cake we ever had! The other cakes looked delicious too so I guess we will have to definitely come back!!!
google avatar

Viona C.

Yelp
I will forever die on the hill that Lloyd's has the best carrot cake to ever exist. I used to run cross country meets across in Van Cortlandt and the reward itself wasn't hitting a PR, but actually the taste of the cream cheese frosting and moist carrot cake after a meet. A lot of races are held there and I highly recommend treating yourself to a slice or two after! If you're not a fan of carrot cake, they have other options like red velvet and chocolate. I still think about this carrot cake often and would even go out of my way to get my hands on a slice!

Dana S.

Yelp
Really wish I could give this place zero stars but that's not an option. The people that's give such high stars great reviews have never gone to Magnolia. Or had their carrot cake. It's like night & day. Not even sure where to start. But first the cake is dense it's heavy as a loaf of sourdough. The icing is not cream cheese it's vanilla. And why is the cake so dark and it's dry. It was such a waste of money. Service was just ok I felt like I was bothering the person at the register. The store is dark really could use a paint job especially with all these 4-5 stars. I'm just saying.
google avatar

Sharae P.

Yelp
Cakes are amazing! Carrot cake was put of this world. I tried the other flavors and hmm hmm good.
google avatar

Marcus S.

Yelp
Went here on April 27, 2024. It was good not great. I had the carrot cake my wife had the red velvet cake. I thought the carrot cake was pretty good. It could have used a little more icing though. My wife thought the red velvet cake was a little too sweet and it could have used a little more icing as well... I'll put it to you this way. Would I get in my car and drive there from my house? Probably not. If I was in the area and happened to stop by? I would pop in there if I could find a decent parking space... But don't take my word for it check the place out yourself. You might find this place to be pretty darn good..
google avatar

James R.

Yelp
I stopped by the Riverdale location, and bought two pieces of carrot cake. Actually my first time visiting this store in about 10 years. The cake I bought tasted nothing like I remembered. Sorry but the experience was uneventful. Perhaps I caught them on a bad day. I was very disappointed. To make matters wore. I told my daughter she was in for an experience. After a bite she looked at me and said it sucked. Y'all can do better. Hopefully I won't have to wait another,10 years. Before I try it again.
google avatar

Patricia T.

Yelp
We got too excited about the cake to take a picture. I absolutely love Lloyd's and have been getting their cakes whenever I'm in the Bronx (although I just realized they open a second location). On a Monday afternoon drive back into the city, we decided to make a detour to Lloyds and found the line out the door. Obviously the place is small and can only fit a few at a time, but a few people queued up behind me within the five minutes I was standing outside. Their carrot cake is their best seller. That day, I decided to go with the nuts and raisins one (as opposed to the plain), and opt for a large instead of a medium. The price was reasonable around $36 for the whole cake: hard to beat those prices. It was also frosted just enough. A little disclaimer, this cake is not going to be the prettiest cake you'll have ever seen. However, it is moist and delicious. If you love carrot cake and want to taste the carrots, this is the one for you. This cake was eaten up SO fast by my family and I, and I still want more. I might have to Uber eats from the Upper East Side location!
google avatar

Jerome G.

Yelp
Best carrot cakes ever! Very friendly staff! Worth the line outside! Pre-order and you won't have to wait in-line!
google avatar

Evelyn C.

Yelp
Queens girl coming into the Bronx for a slice of heaven. This is a good old brick and mortar bakery with the most delicious carrot cake you will ever taste. Trust me your mouth will yank you for it.
google avatar

Anthony M.

Yelp
This the best carrot cake I have ever had in my life!!! Dense and moist oh yeah and the Frosting was oh do right. Can't wait to get another one but in the meantime, if you're in the area , check them out.

Celeni P.

Yelp
Cake takes great, but you will NOT be able to present that anywhere, gift to anyone, bring to an office party, etc. It's a total embarrassment how they decorate their cakes these days and so disappointing that as they have become insanely popular, their attention to detail has completely disappeared. It's pure mediocrity. The appearance of a cake is extremely important, therefore, show some respect to your craft & STOP BEING SO MONEY HUNGRY! This is the perfect example of why sooo many successful businesses later fail. Just sad.....
