I've been to Lobster & Beer at least 3 times. At first, I loved the relaxed vibe of the restaurant's interior. Chill staff members, a TV for sports, and a Northeast feel with the decor. Plenty of dog-friendly patio seating out front, though noisy Motor Ave traffic whizzing by can be distracting. My go-to has always been the Maine roll. I liked theirs and it was comparable to my fav from Cousins. Soft, buttery bun, overflowing with tender and juicy lobster, and not too much in terms of extras. Let the lobster and bread sing, and just accent with a touch of mayo, lemon, maybe a little seasoning and green onion. I was an immediate fan.
However, in the past year or so, something seems to have changed. Maybe they order from different vendors. Maybe they changed up the recipe a bit. It's taken a step back for me. Same goes for the warm Connecticut, which I don't like as much as the Maine, they need to simplify more. Don't get me wrong, their rolls are not bad, just not as simple as I like. The buns seem denser now. The dressings seem more prominent and the lobster has taken a back seat. Quantity seems to have skimped a bit too. It's also pretty drab when you walk in to order now. FWIW, I do like their lobster grilled cheese/tomato bisque and lobster quesadilla as an add-on to supplement the rolls for a full stomach.
Such a shame this place has lost its luster! Cousins is still on a high pedestal for me, Lobster & Beer has a lot of work to do to gain some ground back.
