Where To Gossip In Philly, According To Kelsey McKinney

"The neighborhood bar of neighborhood bars—it really is. Local 44 is in West Philly. When I'm over there, that's my pick of where to go gab. They have stained glass windows, which is kind of silly, but it gives it a reverence. The bar is really dark wood. It's a very dark space, but it is just a classic neighborhood bar. You can eat there, you can talk there, and nobody is going to bother you. They have mulled wine in the winter. The last time I was there, someone told me the most insane story about shit they had seen on Nextdoor; they were pulling up Nextdoor posts and comparing them to posts on Instagram. And I was like, 'I love this.' Something about living in a city that is big but feels like the smallest town in the world is such a delight and truly a treasure." - brennan carley

What Makes a Philly Neighborhood Restaurant? - Eater Philly

"In speaking to restaurateurs around the city about their strategies for successful neighborhood restaurants, it’s clear that it’s more than just vibes. It can be as simple as greeting everyone when they walk in and killing them with kindness, whether they’re a patron or not, as co-owner Nate Irish does at Local 44 in West Philly." - Alisha Miranda

Local 44 Review - West Philadelphia - Philadelphia - The Infatuation

"Leave it to a West Philly beer bar to serve up some of the best vegetarian and vegan brunch options in the city (along with one of our favorite burgers). Local 44 has always been one of the best places to seek out rare craft brews, but when we realized their mushroom scrapple tasted better than the pork version, we never looked back. If you’re looking for something a little heartier, the brunch BLT with sriracha mayo and the full English breakfast are two good choices." - Jordan Price

Google
It's pretty cool they have some many vegan options that are good and somw decently good beer. We got the Seiten nuggets with the ranch, honey mustard, and BBQ. All the sauces were the best part. They were each hand made, there was tones of it, and they were each uniquely good. The nuggets themselves were pretty decent but one texture and mostly just a vessel for the sauces. The staff was great as well. They were super friendly, fast and gave good recommendations. There wasn't much to say either way about the atmosphere but that didn't take much away from it either. Overall a good place.

We have the unfortunate issue of our daughter being inpatient at CHOP; and on the rare occasion we do get out it’s usually hyper local during the dark last 16 months. Today on a 48 degree shitty rainy Saturday; Em was feeling comfortable with her care staff so we ventured 10 blocks away I grew up in the city and jetted for the burbs after nearly 30 years, an I vowed to never go back; I love my burbs now I review as an old crotchety man. Driving around on a dark, rainy, crappy Philadelphia day and hallelujah; we found parking. My West Philadelphia skills had to kick in and parallel shoehorn my way into a spot Im a pro :) Drinks: wife had a BM (Bloody Mary weirdos) and we both had several local beers afterwards; outstanding selection Food: We had some time so we strung things along a bit; had the Broccolini; Mushroom scrapple (a little sachy), wings and the grits F$&&@$!ng fantastic 5⭐️ Service: 5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Sarah was our main server; all staff was super accommodating and awesome Atmosphere: chill - comfortable Spotify mix on; a teeny bit loud but all in all 5⭐️ Place is great. Will be back

Google
Extremely friendly staff and good prices. all I had were the fries which comes with ketchup and mayo if they are anything to go off of the food must be very good solid seasoning and crispy and hot. They play very upbeat and fun music with leads to friendly pizza party level of fun atmosphere 100/10 would definitely recommend you stop by

Google
The Kale salad with smoked tofu was good. The bacon cheese burger was average. The service lacked any enthusiasm and left much to be desired. As if the place was run by part time university students with other priorities. The atmosphere was uninspiring and dark. There were no salt or pepper shakers on the table. The salad was served without bread or butter. Local 44 is open late on weekdays, that is a benefit. The menu seems to favor vegetarian dishes, although there are many dishes for non-V or V+ folks.

Google
A nice little spot for a crisp beer, wonderful selections and friendly Staff. The roast beef Dip was pretty good, and the wings were well sauced, Unfortunately, my wife ordered her burger med-well, and it was pretty rare, and gave us both diarrhea, other than that it was pretty chill.

The waiter is very fast, the food is good, I would definitely come for happy hour

I’ve never felt the need to leave a review on a restaurant, but this place needs it. The food was okay considering the fact that my burger was severely overcooked and the fries looked like they were scrapping the bottom of the pan. The service, however, was terrible. The waiter was not at all welcoming, had an attitude while taking my order and seemed to be ignoring me after delivering my drink. I assumed he was having a rough night and brushed it off and still thanked him until I noticed him laughing and joking with other customers. I would think I was being racially profiled if it weren’t for the server himself also being black! When I finished my food and (watered down) drink I waited 10 minutes with my card out on the table for a check and even resorted to waving at and trying to make eye contact with the server…I was ignored. I attempted to get the attention of another employee so I could leave, but everyone was either busy or not paying attention. I get that I was alone and may have been easy to overlook on such a busy night, but I was seated directly by the door (next to the bar) and multiple servers passed by me to serve people dining outside. I’ve dined here multiple times and have never had a bad experience until tonight.

Google
Great Service, Food Exceeded My expectations, the place draws good people. - wish the bartenders were a little more social not a big deal.

Yelp
A great local bar. Stopped in here on a Wednesday night. It was busy, but I sat the bar and the bartenders were very nice, attentive, and quick. I just had chicken wings, but all good, and drinks looked good.

Yelp
I've been here several times, but the food is only memorable because it is mediocre - excluding the fries. I eat primarily vegetarian/pescatarian, so I've had the caesar salad, fries, seitan nuggets, and mac and cheese. Caesar salad: the dressing isn't flavorful enough to balance out the greens. Seitan nuggets: basically the same quality as store vegan nuggs, but with a less satisfying texture. Mac and cheese: I ordered this a couple days ago and was shocked to discover it was primarily milk butter noodles. Decadent it was not. After eating over 80% of it, I finally found the promised gruyere and cheddar which were actually tasty. However, the toasted breadcrumbs simply added crispiness to the dish and did not contribute any flavor whatsoever - it's just a texture...This was one of the saddest mac and cheeses I've had in years. Boxed kraft is better than what I was served. One person in my group described the dish as "horrid." Someone else had ordered the meatball sandwich and was unable to eat even a full meatball because of how leathery it was. Onto the positive: service is always pretty decent, and the food doesn't take very long. The fries are tasty and complement the ketchup + garlic aioli. If the kitchen refined the recipes and taste-tested, Local 44 could be a great place. Also note for those who are more volume-sensitive: when it's busy inside, the noise levels can be over-stimulating. Outdoor seating is available.

Yelp
I've always seen how busy Local 44 gets in the evenings and have been wanting to try the place for a while. I think I may have made a mistake to come for brunch instead of dinner as it was quite empty even during peak brunch times on a warm Saturday. I ordered the Pork Roll + Egg + Cheese and the Ghia Spritz. I was very excited to try the food when it came out and I would say that the home fries were perfectly fried, crispy on the outside and pillowy soft on the inside. The first few bites of the pork roll were also good, the everything bun was a fun experience. However, it quickly became overwhelmingly salty. Between the bun, cheese, egg, and pork, the taste was not very balanced and I was struggling to continue to eat. My friend who ordered the Shrimp & Grits had a similar experience. The initial bites were great but we both felt like our dishes was salt forward with no balance. We chose to sit outside and although the weather was nice, the tables weee not very stable on the concrete and we kept almost letting our drinks slip to the ground. Unsure if I'd come back to try their lunch menu but will likely not come back for their brunch.

Yelp
Worst service experience. I ordered a saison and they gave me a west coast ipa. Refused to give me a new drink because they closed the tab and the manager wasn't there. Wait staff was rude from the moment we entered and behaved as if we were a burden for even entering (this was the attitude before the mistake).

Yelp
If you live anywhere near Local 44 and you want a good burger... they DEFINITELY have you covered. In my humble opinion, this burger ranks right up there with the burgers that get all of the attention in the city. It is seasoned perfectly, juicy, cooked just right and classic. Of course the fries here are some of my favorite, so there's that too.. but oh my gosh. This burger is one of my faves. And sometimes, on a Friday night, or any night you just need a burger. You should definitely make your way here.

Yelp
Great bar with tons of selections. Indoor and outdoor seating and their food is freakin bomb. Definitely stop by their bottle shop next door too, it's full of awesome treats.

Yelp
Great little neighborhood restaurant/bar the offers bunch on weekends. Food was great and the portions large. Off the beaten path in university city.

Yelp
Ive ended up at local 44 more nights in the past few months then i might have expected. I always loved this place but it kind of out of the blue became a semi-staple spot during my last month in philly. The drinks here are good and i think it's mayb the best spot in ucity/wphilly area for a good dive bar meal that kind of feels elevated cuz they use randomly fancy ingredients ? Idek its just really good and well made. I love the tofu banh mi and the fries with lots of malt vinegar. Initially i wasnt crazy about the veggie burger, but happenstance (i.e., they were out of banhmi) made it so i somehow ended up eating it two nights in a row, and it grew on me. Good spot to catch up w friends or have a lowkey date

Yelp
Came in on a rainy night with my partner and still found that this place was decently full. Tbh im not sure why there aren't more glowing reviews about the food. I was truly in love with our meal. Although the dishes are simple, they were all very well done. The cauliflower and beet salad was shockingly my favorite thing. I intend to learn how to make this, I thought it so delicious. The jalapeños on our plate were very mild, so I'd be curious to know how this tastes when the jalapeños have more kick to them. My first impression of the lamb burger was that the patty seemed small for the bun, but then I realized the bun is so soft that you end up needing that ratio of bread to meat to have good support of the burger. I believe the onions were pickled, and I enjoyed the gentle acidity they brought to the lamb burger. I thought the cheeseburger would have nothing worth commenting on, but I was wrong. This cheeseburger featured some of the best pickles I've ever had. Crisp, fresh, and lightly pickled. I wondered if they made there in house. And the fries? Mm! Crispy, but soft. Our server was really sweet, and gave me beer recommendations. She didn't bat an eye at me sitting in the booth next to my partner for a little bit even though the table was small and intended to have one person on each edge. This place generally felt very queer friendly, which is no surprise given its in West Philly. We enjoyed the energetic vibe of this place at first, but I will say by the end of it the music was kind of loud for us. Throughout the conversation I felt like I was really having to project my voice to be heard. Still, I enjoyed every other aspect of this place so much that I didn't really mind. Would just keep in mind that it's a loud spot for the future.

Yelp
Elevated bar food, friendly wait staff and local beer, that's what you have to look forward to at Local 44. The fries were my favorite part, Belgian style frites. The veggie burger was just okay. The kale salad surprised me, in a good way. A heaping amount of beets, but also subtle touches of heat with slices of fresh jalapeño mixed into the salad. To drink, I tried a local cider and a cocktail with kombucha and tequila. Solid all around!

Yelp
Overall, Local 44 is a nice college divey joint that is casual and has both indoor bar seating and outdoor table seating. The food was ok overall but portions were very small for the price. Overall, I highly recommend the charred broccolini. I wish the mac and cheese had more flavor and the scallion hush puppies were very dry and not so flavorful. Next time, I would stick with just the broccolini. The prices however for such small "large plates" was a little disappointing. Two of us shared the portions and found ourselves a little hungry afterwards. I sat outside for my meal and the service was relatively fast considering it was packed inside due to the Eagles game. But even though it was early in the evening, we had many people come up to us asking for food, money, etc. So I would definitely recommend asking for a table close to the restaurant door or coming earlier in the day if sitting outside, but I understand this is not necessarily something the restaurant can control. I haven't tried the drinks, but I look forward to trying them next time!

Yelp
The pub that I thought had their things together. I visited this place a few weeks ago, and know for sure I'll never go back, but I don't owe them any favors, so maybe I'll spare at least one more person from an unnecessary experience. I was not alone and my party enjoyed a meal there while I simply ate Brussel sprouts and ordered a burger to go, I didn't check them and this is my error, but I only live 5 minutes walking distance and called them as soon as I got home. To which I was hung up on, therefore I return and explain that I'd asked for no thousand island concoctions on my burger, and that they could please replace it with what I ordered, I was told yes and they eventually borrowed an additional half an hour. After this however, I presume someone assumed dishonesty in me or that I would not wait for my food, so in 30/45 minutes time the gentleman was surprised to still see me, and says, I'll just cancel the whole ticket from earlier. As if that solved my issue, the issue of me paying for food and not eating, I'd made a decision on what I'd eat and paid for it nearly 2 hours prior to him telling me that he wouldn't charge me or provide me with the one thing I ordered. To them I say good luck, cause they'll continue to do it without my support.

Yelp
The definition of a neighborhood spot. It's unpretentious, good vibes, good food, drinks, and the staff are all a pleasure to engage with. I used to come here almost every other week or more when I was in Philly, and it's such a nice, easy spot to grab a drink with friends on a hot summer day and enjoy inventive food made by the chefs. I don't think I've ever had anything bad here, and I have had some stuff I've never tried before. They really do try to keep things local, almost all their drafts are from Pennsylvania. You see people walking by and stopping to say hi that are sitting outside, and it's overall just a great vibe. Anytime we have a hard time deciding on a spot to eat, Local 44 is a bit difficult to say no to. If you're in the area, definitely check it out.

Yelp
We recently hosted a large party in the back area of Local 44 and I can't say enough amazing things about the service and the food. The communication prior to the event was seamless and on the day of, the waiters were incredibly attentive and organized and the food was so tasty - especially the sliders, brussels, beet salad and chicken wings. Everyone had an amazing time! Drinks are also super affordable, especially during happy hour. Thanks to the whole team!

Yelp
Their brunch menu, while short, is all vegetarian/vegan dishes. Delicious bloody Mary. Friendly staff. Outdoor seats available. Parking is street only - I felt blessed to find a spot on the same block! I had the charred broccoli topped with a 6-min egg. That peanut sauce plus loads of chili crisp made the dish a flavor bomb. It was a light dish, just filling enough without overbearing your stomach. Highly recommend :)

Yelp
Great spot for a drink. Good vibes, indoor and outdoor seating. Bar food worth getting

Yelp
I've eaten here about 8 times in the past 3 weeks. I always get a Porter or a Stout, the Beet Tahina, and then the Kale Caesar salad w chicken. The Beet Tahina has red and golden beets and sliced jalapeno for a nice kick! The chicken in the Kale Caesar salad is mostly all white meat pulled chicken and tastes fresh. They have a decent selection of craft beers and it changes regularly. The food and portions is usually good but there is definitely some inconsistency from one night to the next. This week the portions were very skimpy on Monday and Thursday night, but was awesome Tuesday and Wednesday night. It's Thursday night and I'm here at the bar and they brought me the Beet Tahina and it was laughable at how small the portion was and it was missing the red beets. Monday night, my Kale salad barely had any chicken and the Beet Tahina was made poorly and skimpy. When the kitchen gets it right though, I love the place! I always sit at the bar since I'm alone and traveling and the bartending staff is usually nice and on the ball. See my pics! Unfortunately I didn't get a pic of the bad portions before sending it back. Did I mention they have a nice little package store next door with good selection of craft beers?!

Yelp
There was a time, when time was slow and cell phones were a twinkle in an eye of ... no one. It was simply called "The Tavern". On Afternoons, I would walk by the open door and glance in. There were always three or four people at least 20 or 30 years older than I was. I never understood how you made money with hardly anyone in a bar. My Dad would say, "I'm going down the street ", which meant to the bar. In later days, it turned into a major campus bar! This is before it was a thing to be seen. Honestly, I don't know what I am trying to say but ... I remember it all.

Yelp
Had the fish and chips. Wasn't impressed. Small piece of fish smothered in thick batter with an over abundance of fries. So if you like fries that's the plate to order..

Yelp
So blessed to live in a neighborhood with such a good sense of community, and a vast selection of restaurants. Walking distance from my house, lies Local 44. I've been inside their beer shop before, but never dined. Their beer shop is decent. A little pricier than I prefer, but I don't mind supporting local businesses... and the workers are friendly. Now onto the restaurant, my boyfriend and I opted to dine outside so I can't speak for how the inside aesthetics are, because I didn't get a chance to see but they have ample outdoor seating. Heated lamps for the colder weather. Keep in mind that it is on a busy street though, so there will constantly be people walking near you. Food. The menu is very...limited. I really wish they had a bigger menu. It was hard to choose something due to how small the menu is. I had a burger the other day, but had to go with a burger again because that seemed the most appealing to me. Service took a little longer because they only had two servers, but the food was actually really good. You can tell everything was made fresh and I would definitely come here again if I were craving a restaurant quality burger. My boyfriend got the pulled pork sandwich. He said it was just ok. The drinks were also just ok, nothing worth bragging about...tasted more like juice than a cocktail. All in all, this is a just an average spot if you need a quick bite. I'm not gonna lie, I was expecting more since I always see how busy it is outside. But it didn't really wow me. Definitely not rushing to revisit. This place has A LOT more potential... and they can start off by expanding the menu.

Yelp
Not very impressed. Probably considered a nice place when I was in college. Being next to a bottle shop, I was expecting a better beer selection. Such disappointing beers on tap. The food was very mediocre at best. The banh mi sandwich tasted pretty bland. Not worth the money for the sandwich. Save that money and go get it on Washington ave!

Jackson P.

Yelp
If you're craving a burger you have to stop by. Fries are great, apps are awesome, beer is great. Great service. A local go to spot for sure.

Yelp
I never leave reviews. The burger. The burger. The 44 should be renamed 100. Please add lettuce tomato and jalepeno. It was really good. No grease. And fries were fresh cut potatoes. I drive by for 20 years never once went it. Thank you

Jeffrey B.

Yelp
Amazing neighborhood joint with great food (small menu, everything is 10/10) and great local draft list with good liquor selection. Wings are great, burger is great and unique. Staff is great and all work together to make sure everyone has what they need.

Neil E.

Yelp
The food had tiny portion sizes, was extremely average, and was expensive. The service was slow and the waiter acted like he was annoyed to take my order, which was a burger that apparently takes almost an hour to make. The ambiance is being harassed by homeless people three times during the dining experience. Stay away.

Jack D.

Yelp
Overpriced with small portions. Bartenders seem too busy chatting with regulars to take a drink order, even at the bar. I would suggest sticking with some of the local ethnic restaurants which seem to provide better service and more bang for your hard earned buck.
google avatar

Jerry C.

Yelp
In for dinner again and both the food and service were both excellent. Fresh made food served hot and pretty quickly. Extremely generous portion of hand cut fries served hot and delicious. Fish and chips fresh made hot and tasty. Today's brew of choice was Love City Tropical Tart Beats, it's a very refreshing blend with hints of mango, passion fruit, pineapple and pink guava and it's tart to live up to its name. The staff was friendly and each of them checked in each time they passed the table. Nate and crew were pretty busy, that's great to see Highly recommended!

Cornelia F.

Yelp
great neighborhood spot with good food good ambiance good times helpful servers few nearby options for an elevated drink and dine experience--neighborhood would be lost without it

Yelp
Great local diner, friendly service, veggie options. Lots of beer on tap. Outside dining.

Yelp
I've been to Local 44 a handful of times recently. I will say it is one of the few decent options in this part of West Philly, but I still think it's pretty mediocre. My friends love the burger, but I would say it's just alright. The fries are the best part. Take that opinion for what it's worth since I just recently started eating meat again. My first visit I got the veggie burger, which I have to say was barely edible. I didn't even finish half of it. But luckily it comes with fries so I didn't go hungry. I went last week and got the tofu banh mi. It was pretty decent, but the tofu could have been a bit thicker. It was fried to a point where you could barely tell the "meat" of the tofu anymore. I ordered it without the cilantro because I'm one of those people who can't stand the taste, but of course it came with cilantro. Not just a little, but a LOT of cilantro. For the price, it should come with a side imo, but I had to pay $7 extra for them. The Brussels sprouts are definitely tasty, but sort of inconsistent. The my first two times getting them were phenomenal, but the last time they were overly charred to the point it killed the nice vinaigrette flavor. Plus that order came out after our entrees even though we ordered them as a starter. Beware, if you don't order them the aroma of everyone else's will be tempting enough to make you miserable. Last thing, the komburita (kombucha meets margarita) sounds like an intriguing combo, but it's not. Another one I just couldn't even get myself to finish. I want Local 44 to be so good, but I just find it to be very average. The service doesn't really help, either. I'm sure I'll be back purely because of the convenient location, and I hopeful future experiences will be better. I definitely wouldn't go out of your way to try it, though.

Yelp
I'm not adding too many pictures this is one of those 'what happens here, stays here' kinda places. It's dark, industrial and laidback and about 15 years ago probably Smokey as hell! You know smoking is 'forbidden' in Philly bars and restaurants. I don't smoke but it's missing in the 'ambiance' and experience here. My reason for trying this divey bar is the Yelp reviews and the 15 minute ride. It's what you expect in this area a mix of everything, races, lifestyle , gender and families all out having a good time together either directly or indirectly. Very likable and easy. My reason for going out on a Sunday is the listed fish fry. It's fish and chips with a salad for $15 if you get the 'special ' they will add a pint of 'a' lager for $3 more. My first plate had to nice size pieces of fish(beer battered cod), fries 'chips' and shredded greens with dressing and a slice of radish? One of the pieces of had a weird texture that could not be flaked away or cut with a knife. The replacement was twice the amount as before of shredded greens now two pieces of radish, half the portion of fries and one piece of fish. I think the problem is the fish is frozen and they drop it in the fryer and it fries too quickly, it doesn't allow it to thoroughly cook. Would I visit again, maybe but not to eat! The overpriced food is not that good.

Yelp
Good local bar with local vibe. Good selection of beers. Prices are reasonable for the area.

Yelp
More like 4.5 and really good bar/restaurant. While the menu might be on the smaller side it is because every choice is awesome and if they offered any more choices it would be even harder to choose. We had 3 different items; Pork ban Mhi, sesame noodles with rotisserie chicken, and the fish and chips. All were excellent. Service was 5 stars and so was the overall atmosphere (for a bar/restaurant). I definitely recommend it. Oh - beer choices were also plentiful and there is something for everyone.

Yelp
I've been to Local 44 several times, but only twice for meals. I miss watching Eagles games here - they have a great beer selection and a nice neighborhood bar vibe. Since I can't get such an experience here now, I don't think I'll be coming back, especially after last night's takeout meal. The house made veggie burger from their current "Hatd Times" menu was a real disappointment. Incredibly dense and desert-dry, it was like eating a brick. It was seasoned all right and not bad flavor wise, but the copper cheddar melted on top just made it heavier and provided no moisture - where was that sriracha mayo? A few slices of tomato would have helped, the lettuce was crushed and shriveled to the point of being unnoticeable. The brioche bun was okay, but given how rich the rest of the sandwich was I had to leave the top of the bun uneaten. My partner got the Living Legend hoagie, and he commented on how surprisingly dry that was too, though he generally deemed it one of the better vegetarian cheesesteaks that he's had. The one other meal I've had at Local 44 was dine-in, when they still had the seitan vegan Reuben. Admittedly I'm a bit of a Reuben snob from my meat-eating days - I grew up in New York, what do you expect? I have had one or two really excellent vegetarian Reubens that would live up to my tough New Yorker standards, but the one from Local 44 wasn't one of them. It wasn't bad, it just wasn't anything special. That's the only thing I can even remember about that meal, just not feeling much of anything either way. I know I'm in the minority as far as negative critics of the food here, even among vegetarians. What can I say? Can't win em all...

Yelp
Honestly an all around great spot. Love the fries, Brussel sprouts and drinks and beer choice. To be honest the veggie burger left a little to be desired. It was a bit dry for my taste, but that's tricky, especially when it's actual real veggies and not some manufactured fake meat. The flavor was definitely decent. Definitely want to come back again and try something else

Yelp
It's a bar. I love bars. Beer and french fries and ya girl is on cloud 9. The bartender/waiter was super cool and pretty much just told us we can yell for him or obnoxiously waive him down when we needed something. I tried the veggie wings which were satisfying. Pretty much like Frank's hot sauce which hits the spot for me. The "ranch" side was not ranch though. I'm not sure what that was. It tasted good but definitely would've preferred some good ole ranch.

Yelp
They messed up my burger and fries. I ordered a medium burger. It was well done and the bacon on it was rubbery and hard to chew. My fries were also overcooked. I'm very disappointed , as we have been regular customers from the neighborhood. No offer of a discount or anything when I mentioned it. I don't trust sending it back and having it done wrong again by an angry cook. I don't understand. It wasn't even that busy. It was a rainy Thursday night. Maybe BC the owner wasn't there? Terrible.

Yelp
This place is a great place, love the food and the vibe here. Every time we have been here we have been taken care of with the hostesses and/or waitstaff. I am impressed with the vegan options. The Buffalo seitan dish is dee-lish! And if you eat meat, then the burger will totally satisfy that desire. And if you eat both, you will be hobbling out the door full beyond belief, almost in a food coma! Slowly trying the other dishes but it has been really good so far. Recommend!

Yelp
Pros: quick seating, servers were friendly and polite. Cons: the dining room smelled like straight up piss, it smelled like a bathroom! My lamb burger smelled and tasted like gas, like they used lighter fluid on the grill or something.

Yelp
My partner and I went to Local 44 last night and left feeling completely unwelcome. My partner is very petite and was told that she couldn't sit at the bar - the insinuation was that she, a 40 year old woman, is a child. Worse still, after we cleared up the miscommunication, there was little acknowledgment that they had made a mistake and humiliated her.

Yelp
I have attempted to dine at this establishment on several occasions, but unfortunately, I have been severely disappointed every time. Firstly, the food is overpriced and nothing to write home about. Secondly, the service is terrible, and the owner is extremely rude and short with customers. I am judging this on the most basic level of customer service as I can't even get someone to take my order...Lastly, eating outside is an extremely unpleasant experience as you are constantly being approached by homeless people, making it hard to enjoy your meal. When complaining about this, I was told this person is welcome here. Seriously? I don't want someone asking me for a cigarette or money when I am just trying to enjoy a meal. My best advice is to save money and eat somewhere more reliable. Personally, I want to spend my money at local establishments that make me feel welcome and provide a nice space to socialize and enjoy a good meal. Unfortunately, after multiple attempts, the mediocre food and inattentive staff make this a thumbs down from me.

Yelp
We had specifically gone to this area for tacos at the new/old taco spot up the street. Sadly they only serve breakfast until 3p. So we toddled down the street to see what was there. Came to Local 44 but it looked closed. Tried the door & it was open. Note to mgmt: clean your windows. Dusty. Not a good look. There is a long bar & tall tables with high top seats. Fluffy folks you'll need a hoist. But if you go around the corner of the wall, there are booths and regular tables with armless chairs! WINNER. Again with only a brunch menu, maybe beef it up a bit to counter the competition. We ordered the appetizer of sriracha eggs - which never came. 2 bloody Mary's- weak, watered down and zero flavor. Just bland. And 2 burgers. Medium. Which came just this side of tartare. I like rare. My son likes medium. These were neither. I ate mine being the ravenous Phat girl I am. My son got his to go. As we were getting ready to leave we realized this place had been subject of a recent boycott. Social justice issues, aside, it's the food, that wont bring us back. Why 3*** you ask? Service was good, attentive and fast. Although if it had been my table I might of asked why both one of the bloody Mary's & burger were untouched. Total bill sans non-delivered eggs and including tip: $55 Fat friendly: 2 double chins for seating options.

Yelp
I am a 68 year old scientist who retired from a successful career in the Pharmaceutical Industry. I was treated disrespect fully at Local 44 tonight. I have been a regular customer but that is no more. When I am seated at a bar and have already been served an alcoholic beverage or a food item I do not expect to be told by any patron that I am sitting in their seat with the expectation that I should move. That happened to me tonight and I will therefore never visit this restaurant/bar again. It's a great place to be treated poorly.

Yelp
The first time we tried going to this place it was packed and hard to get served. So we tried again and now I'm able to review it! Deviled eggs and the squash onion rings are both awesome. The sauce that was on it really made it and both dishes had the same sauce. Our actual entries weren't that good. I got a salad and the chicken was kind of weird. It felt like it was boiled and then chilled. I normally expect grilled chicken on my salad I guess. My wife got the Ruben and wasn't impressed. Waitress was very friendly and accommodating. We just weren't into anything but the appetizers.

Yelp
Grabbed hard times hoagies from Local 44 for lunch today. I had the Common Man and my wife had the Raging Bull. Both hoagies were massive, justifying the $12 price tag. The common man was rather basic (as suggested by the name). The raging bull was quite the opposite (also as the name suggests). The fried eggplant pieces were so big that it's definitely going to be 2 meals even for hungry folks. Looking forward to local 44 opening up again as their normal menu is obviously a bit more fun. Looking forward to coming back - maybe I'll try the Gloria next - and definitely on the weekend so I can take a drink to go when I'm not on the clock. They've still got a lot of drinks available for takeout!

Yelp
The wings have always been small and some of the least tasty and over fried wings I've ever had. Now you only get 7 instead of 10 for the same price. Is that a meal? No. They also squeezed them into a box that was a 4 inch square so they were squished together. Good thing I opened it and saw that mess before leaving the store. There's better wings anywhere. go down the block to the other restaurants for food. What was I thinking. The beer is ok, but the menu and the food suck.

Yelp
Started coming here right when I moved to Philly a few years back and have continued to return. I can't think of any other bar/restaurant in West Philadelphia that is like Local 44 - casual, good beer selection, and a solid menu that is slightly elevated bar food without being pretentious. It's a perfect "local bar" but isn't usually full of Boomers watching football that you see at other pubs in the area. Recommended in particular for a quiet solo dinner (with pickled deviled eggs) and a beer at the bar.
