The Best Restaurants Near Smith, Amherst, Mount Holyoke, and Hampshire | Eater

"With locations in New Hampshire and Massachusetts, this family-owned burger joint slings grass-fed patties from Easthampton neighbor Chicoine Family Farm. Locals know to order their burgers “pink” or “no pink,” and they’ll recommend that you not miss the cornmeal-dredged fried pickles with ranch, Buffalo blue cheese fries, and savory-sweet Cap’n Crunch-battered chicken tenders." - Nat Belkov

My partner and i have seen this place multiple times and had finally chosen to go here. We were genuinely excited to see the decor of the place and how it was set up. It felt more like a "mom and pop" kind of place rather than a quick corporate sit down (we prefer mom and pop places). The individual who took our order was very welcoming and definitely went out of their way to make sure we understood every option they had. They also understood my dietary concerns and made sure i was taken care of. We messed up how we ordered our food, but the cashier was able to fix our mistakes and double-check that everything was good to go (we messed up like twice). The food we received was above and beyond what we expected. Everything was cooked to how we like our burgers. All the toppings were fresh. Their service was great. Everyone was friendly and timely, and we didn't have to wait long to receive the food. The portions are worth every penny I spent there. We drove about an hour home, and all we could talk about was how the food didn't make us feel heavy and sick/ bloated. It was good wholesome food and well be back for more. This is officially our new go-to burger spot

Google
Local Burger delivers a consistently satisfying burger experience, and my recent visit was no exception. I ordered the Southwest Burger, which was fresh, flavorful, and perfectly balanced. The toppings, including the crisp lettuce, juicy tomato, and crunchy pickles, complemented the well-seasoned beef patty beautifully. Each bite was a blend of satisfying textures and a rich, hearty taste. The atmosphere at Local Burger is casual and inviting, making it a great spot for a quick, delicious meal. The service was efficient, and the food arrived promptly. It's clear that quality and attention to detail are priorities here. If you’re in the mood for a well-crafted burger in a laid-back setting, Local Burger is worth a visit. I'll definitely be back to try more of their menu offerings!

Google
Recently tried my very first Juicy Lucy. When I say knocked me out of the park, knocked my socks off, ripped off my shirt, and blew me out of the water…… boy oh boy this is the BEST burger I’ve ever had in my entire 27 years of existence. The cooks need their backs rubbed! I’m impressed with how not messy it was, too. I thought I’d make a huge mess but it was manageable.

Google
The fries are disgusting and soggy, definitely not worth the $6 price tag. Also very bland - there’s barely any flavor in them at all it’s basically a big pile of smush. I could only eat a few decently crispy ones. The rest were inedible. Definitely would not reccomend this place for their fries

Google
Service was good! Employees were friendly and very outgoing! And to top it all off the food was amazing! If you like the small town feel in a cozy community in neighborhood, with amazing food, this is your place. Burgers, fries, hot dogs and smiles all around

Google
This is hands down the best place to grab a burger. I've been a repeat customer for years now and continue to eat there 2 to 3 times a month. Food has always been great. I can say that only 1 time did my burger not come out correctly. Mistake was fixed immediately. Great for a quick bite or to hang out with friends and share one of the many tasty items on the menu. The staff is usually outgoing and friendly. Gets a bit crowded at times but the wait is worth it. Thursday nights during the summer has been the busiest I've seen. Outside seating available during the season though.

Google
Local Burger is a Northampton staple, with dining outdoors as well as inside, they operate with a food truck or their brick and mortar location within Northampton. We came here after graduation from a local university, and it was crowded but they still gave us exceptional service. They got the burgers out very quick, cooked very well, and even helped explain any questions we had on the menu. Their burgers are good. Can be on the higher end of burgers, but the quality makes up for it. The burger patty is juicy, the buns are toasted well and the extra ingredients on top of the patty help the flavor of the burger. Overall would want to get again whenever I'm in the area.

Google
The hot dog was fine but the bun wasn’t grilled or toasted. The onion rings, which were served about 20 minutes after the hot dog, were inedible. They were so greasy I felt ill after trying one. They were just swimming in grease. They cost $10 and I threw them out.

Yelp
Service, food, vibe, location. It has it all. Best of the best! Slider burger, no bun with cheddar and American, pickle and onion. Onion rings. Oreo / Salted Combo Combo Shake.

Yelp
Heck yeah! This place is a gem! When the weathers nice, sitting out on their patio with all the flowers and plants is a real treat. Makes you feel like you're on vacation somewhere. Ordered the buffalo chicken sandwich that was so massive I ended up sharing it and was still full afterwards. When they say large fries... they give you enough for like 3 people. The ones we got were crispy and good. Their shakes are really good too. Definitely good value for your money here and the place to come when you want tasty, yet casual food.

Yelp
BEWARE THE FRENCH FRIER PERSON. Hey, best burger and veggie burger and hotdog you will ever eat in your life, and I know my dogs and burgers. If you are visiting the truck, you likely will get some delicious french fries too. However, in the downtown Northampton local burger, it's a crapshoot with the fries. They can be so greasy that you wonder if they accidentally ladled equal parts fries to oil. I am not exaggerating. Asking for well-done is not the answer. When you get good fries, find out the name of the fry person (and tell me). Worth asking.

Yelp
I always make it a point to get the turkey burger and sweet potato fries every time I am in town. I am a sucker for the maple mayo and I have tried my best to recreate it at home. The service is always quick. We sat outside on strong street and I love that there is the option for more outdoor dining.

Yelp
Every college town needs a burger place like this. It's not perfect but we really enjoyed our stop here. It's a perfect place when you have a burger or chicken cravings. It's a fast casual concept and we had a very friendly person to take our order. I got the buffalo chicken sandwich. The chicken was cooked perfectly. It was drenched in buffalo sauce with some blue cheese. The bun seemed like a standard potato bun and just got soggy from all the sauces which was a shame because it became a messy delicious sandwich to eat. 7 napkins later.... The burger was cooked perfectly but again the bun just didn't highlight the rest of it. Fries were nice and crispy and well portioned. The best part of the meal. Milkshake was nice and creamy and a big hit too. Again, little things matter when you seek to be the best. It's quite good and well worth the visit. Just a tad short of the perfection you sometimes crave. Then again, you might love the bun in which case, perfection achieved.

Yelp
service is awsome; really accommodating. it can get very busy which makes wait times much longer but speaks to how yummy the food is.

Yelp
Ambiance- a local burger joint, not fast food but not typical restaurant. Food made to order and delivered to your table. Very chill, small, relaxed though. Bathroom wasn't super clean. Service- the staff was extremely friendly and helpful. Food- the burgers were huge. Delicious but so big. I gave one of my Pattie's to my husband because it was too big. The Mac and cheese bites were good but honestly the star for us was the buffalo mayo with the Mac and cheese bites. The poutine fries were okay. I think the fries by themselves would have been better.
google avatar

Evan J.

Yelp
The food is solid but overpriced considering the burgers don't come with a side. Please for the love of god get a new ordering system, the website SUCKS. Like actually sucks, you can't even autocomplete your credit card because the form doesn't detect the paste and thinks you haven't entered anything yet. It's 2024 babes, pick a better ordering system.
google avatar

Kym F.

Yelp
The quality of the food is okay at best and the wait time was 35 minutes for the food to come out. It was not a packed house either. Also, a turkey burger with lettuce, cheese and bacon and a sweet potato fry cost 17.10 and was below average. We will never return there. Next time we'll go back to a constant stand by with better food. I would rather go across the street to Fitzwilly's.

Yelp
Love this place, fresh and local, I love the teriyaki burger with pineapple! Yummy! They always ask pink or no pink and I appreciate that as most places will only do well done!
google avatar

Joe S.

Yelp
Probably the best burger joint in the area. The burgers, fries, and shakes are all amazing. Can be busy at times but well worth the wait

Cathy L.

Yelp
We stopped in on a Tuesday afternoon and got a burger and sweet potato fries. They were amazing-I loved the dipping sauce! The young woman who waited on us was incredibly nice and accommodating. We will definitely come back again

Yelp
I hadn't been to local burger in years so stopped in with several friends on a chilly night. I chose the kimchi burger which was pork, kimchi, garlic, ginger, scallions, coated with panko bread crumbs and deep fried with greens and a seasoned mayo. The burger had that pork resiliency if that makes any sense and the mayo was a great accompaniment. I personally didn't get any kimchi flavors. We shared an order of the poutine which was good. It got cold super quick as it was served rather spread out on a tray. It's a definitely a good spot if you're looking for a burger.

Yelp
Great food and always busy. Huge amount of fries! Doesn't matter what you order, it's always good.

Yelp
Great place, great food, friendly staff, friendly city, enjoyed visiting definitely visiting again soon.

Yelp
Just north of 4 but needs a little bit of improvement. Stopped by with my son on his way to camp to have something to eat. Place is not quite the fast food joint but just a good local burger joint with great milkshakes. Burgers are tasty and done right but needs a little bit of an improvement with kitchen management so one doesn't have to remind the hostess about missing fries.

Yelp
Ease of ordering, beautiful outdoor seating and friendly staff make this a great place to enjoy a meal in NH. Grass fed burger was very delicious and flavorful. I loved the blue cheese option and my burger was done perfectly. My counterparts burger was also cooked perfectly with bacon. The onion rings!!! OMG giant and absolutely the BEST onion ring we've ever had. You could taste the beer in the batter. They were a bit greasy, but well seasoned and delicious! The fries were average. Nicely cooked and seasoned, way better than most frozen fries. Overall, if you're in the mood for a burger this is your place. Get a Togo box as you'll only be able to eat 1-2 rings.

Yelp
My partner and I went to Northampton for a weekend - arrived on Friday, left on Sunday and kid you not, from all of the incredible food choices in NoHo, we ate here personally (and brought friends) every day! Fanatics. The Westhampton burger was delicious everyday. My goodness. Look at the picture. It tastes even better than it looks. Among our tribe, we had fries, fried pickles, hot dogs, burgers, plenty. All delicious and highly recommend. Even after 10 years since undergrad, it's just as good, if not better!
google avatar

Ajith J.

Yelp
Great spot to grab a nice fresh, juicy gourmet burger. They have switched up some things on the menu which is nice. Their Buffalo fries are really good and the potion may look like slight work but it's heavy just like the poutine I tried last time. Great service and nice chill ambience. There is a parking garage 5 minute away or street parking. It would nice to see the cocktail prices listed on the menu instead of having to ask for it.
google avatar

Yelp
Incredibly bummed to see how many negative reviews Local has racked up... though I warn folks perusing here, the comments seem mostly to remark on the prices going up and have nothing to do with the quality of the food. Which! is absolutely stellar. Last time I visited Local, I was in college and probably not in the soberest of states. Today, I visited almost a decade later, was incredibly sober, and am happy to state that the food still slaps. The Cap'n Crunch chicken tenders are a must-try.... subtle sweetness, ingenious creation. The fried pickles are juicy yet ultra crispy, piping hot and served with some solid ranch for dipping. The mac bites are fantastic, especially with any of the array of sauces. Keep it up Local!

Yelp
Well what a treat. Stopped in the town just to stretch our legs on the way to Stowe, and sort of just stumbled into this place. We were looking for salads but instead got two burgers and fries. I had the grass fed burger cause hero, and my wife had a portobello burger cause salad. Both were quite enjoyable. We got a small fries to split cause health and it was so big we couldn't finish it. There is a lovely patio/street seating that lets us kind of soak up the town and that was a real delight for us.
google avatar

Yelp
Great thick and juicy burgers, hand bartered onion rings and hand cut fries! A solid 4 1/2 stars. If you get a double patty be prepared to deconstruct or eat it with a fork. If you're getting lots of hot toppings (mushrooms, cheese, bacon, etc, be sure to ask for the cold veggies on the side.
google avatar

Henri D.

Yelp
In 2023 this is truly a 1 star fast food restaurant. They always overcook my burgers and they are always drenched in rancid seed oils. The buns are wet cardboard. Prices have gone up and food has gone down over the last 5 years. What a shame.

Clayton C.

Yelp
I've been going to local burger for more than a decade. It's my favorite burger place in the valley - an old school hamburger joint feel. Food is fresh and made to order - I'm a big fan of the the poutine on the side of whichever hamburger I'm feeling. The shakes are good too! Place is small on the inside, but ambiance has a nice vibe. Sometimes there can be a bit of line but moves fast. Always a treat.

Yelp
I visited around here a couple months to visit Gay Brother and his husband, ted(so proud they can get married now). This was definatly the highlight. The fried werent my favorite, but GAy Brother loves them so I preteneded to as well(that seems to be all im doing lately). Burgers have always been my favorite since i was a child, and will always hold a special place in my broken heart. My son Neil, came with me and he loved this place. The Burgers are fresh, always. I was writing this while reminiscing. Definitenally miss it, next time im up north ill make sure to visit again.

Yelp
The food is delicious, the prices are great, and the service is top-notch! My husband and I regularly come in for lunch or dinner and are warmly welcomed by Lexi. She is the heart of this restaurant and is a master at her job. She makes you feel at home and she treats every customer like they are family. I highly recommend you go in and say hi to Lexi!

Yelp
Delicious food and good choices. Outdoor seating and you order by scanning the QR code at your table. The staff brings your food and drinks and then sort of ignores you. There's a station where you get condiments and utensils. Our server forgot to bring one of our drinks so we had to go inside and get it. There were no napkins at the station so we got those inside too. You bus your own tables. At the end I wondered why I tipped the same amount i would have at a full service restaurant. Our meal was good though and there was live music playing on Strong Avenue, multiple dogs for our little to say hello to, and a general summer party feeling. I also found the tables and chairs to be very sturdy and comfortable, as opposed to the flimsy kind you might find at some outdoor places. As a plus sized person I appreciated that.
google avatar

Peter N.

Yelp
Wow. The turkey burger has just the right amount of "burnt" taste to it. The buffalo blue fries are smothered in sauce and just the right amount of cheese. Beware! One order of fries is easily enough for three or four people.
google avatar

Eleanor M.

Yelp
The food is so yummy! I love supporting the local community. It's best to order and eat outside! Captain Crunch Chicken Tenders yummy!!
google avatar

Dk M.

Yelp
Stopped into local burger by chance after always wanting to give it a try. Right away the ambiance and vibe was stellar. Great cool and casual place. $1.99 for cheese and other toppings (except lettuce, tomato, pickle) was definitely subpar. Service was great. But the food was even better. Ordered a regular cheeseburger, a house-made vegetarian burger, fries, and a lime rickey. Cheeseburger was great, not the best I've had but really good nonetheless. Veggie burger tasted good, and was definitely a change from the impossible meat. The lime rickey appeared to also be bottled in house, which was impressive. The fries were well-seasoned and had a great crunch. I would come back here, maybe with the girls for a boozy shake.
google avatar

Kevin M.

Yelp
Burgers and fries were great. Lots of good options in the downtown, this place was great. Burgers made the way you want and fries, really good. Not much more to write, if you want a great burger this is the place.
google avatar

sarah h.

Yelp
Great for counter food. Many options and meat free options are taken care of here. Feels a bit crammed when it gets crowded. Wish the burgers were just a little bit thicker
google avatar

Parker H.

Yelp
Hells yeah. Great burgers. Get grass fed. Service is solid, food is consistent. Ok it's not healthy, but damn it's good. Love the inside/outside options. It's a classic.

Wednesday S.

Yelp
They only have one thing to do and they do it poorly. Got fries and a grassfed burger on a gluten-free bun. (Thank you for having a gluten free bun.) The fires were lousy ad the burger was tasteless.
google avatar

Randy P.

Yelp
Nice people good food. Nice little spot to go enjoy well crafted food with a calm clean experience a real in the now feeing. The staff is passionate and alow you to take your time from my first time. For now I found my little go to when visiting the area.
google avatar

Dave D.

Yelp
Lots of folks have about this place, but after three visits, no more. It's burgers. Your choice is gray or pink. WTF??? The wait times are horribly long, too. Cheese? Don't even think of asking for Swiss or you'll be greeted with an eye roll and the snarky response of American or whatever. For a burger cooked the way you want, go to Fitzwilly across the street. Five star for that dining experience. Why two stars and not one? At least we didn't get food poisoning. So, there's that.
google avatar

Mike T.

Yelp
Awesome selection of very unique style burgers. Truffle fries were absolutely delicious. Very friendly staff. Option of sitting outside in a nice courtyard like environment.
google avatar

Brian L.

Yelp
Excellent service and the best veggie burger and sweet potato fries! Highly recommend!!
google avatar

Emma R.

Yelp
The captain crunch tenders had just a hint of sweetness. Like I wouldn't have known it was captain crunch in an unmarked test but that doesn't mean they weren't still good! Nice a crispy. I enjoyed the hand cut sweet potato fries. They really are hand cut in all shapes so you can get a super crunchy one and a softer one that you can really taste the flavors of the sweet potato. My friends enjoyed the maple mayo and said he tasted the maple more than the mayo flavors. They also liked the chicken sandwich and the local burger. The facility was overall sticky. If it wasn't raining outside we would have enjoyed the large outdoor seating area instead.

Brian D.

Yelp
As someone who eats at a burger joint once per week, I know a good burger when I taste one...and this place doesn't serve 'em. The burgers always have a weird butane like taste to them. Have never experienced this at any other burger spot. The only reason they don't get one star from me is because their Cap 'N Crunch tenders and poutine are good. For those near the Amherst area I recommend Wagon Wheel, Gill MA and Classic Burgers, West Springfield MA.
google avatar

Dee C.

Yelp
The hot dog I ordered was good. They slacked on the ketchup and onions but was still good. I had the Westhampton burger and it wasnt satisfying at all. I asked for medium well and it was charred. I was asked if i wantes it pink when I ordered it, I guess cause I said no they just over did it.
google avatar

Jody W.

Yelp
While in town with a large group of friends, it was decided to grab a late lunch at Local on Saturday. This is a great, casual spot with really good food. If you get one of the signature burgers, make sure you have time for a nap....especially if you have a large order of fries to accompany it. And a milkshake! I had an impossible burger with a side of sweet potato fries. Also ordered the captain crunch chicken fingers to share. Others at the table had regular burgers, regular fries and those aforementioned milkshakes. Everyone was happy and everything was delicious. Plenty of options for carnivores and vegetarians. Excellent choice!
google avatar

Luke G.

Yelp
The food is all super good just like local burgy everything on the menu is outstanding! The service is super good with the food made pretty fast as well as being amazing quality! 100% recommend this business!!!
google avatar

Anthony H.

Yelp
This is by far my favorite burger place ever. I always order the Westhampton burger, pink, with everything on it, and it is perfect every time. The regular fries are awesome but the sweet potato fries (served with maple mayo) are out-of-this-world good. The onion rings are gigantic, the fried pickles are the best anywhere, the mac n cheese bites are yummy, and the Cap'n Crunch chicken fingers are AMAZING. The consistency of this place is unmatched. 20/10 would recommend.
google avatar

Michelle G.

Yelp
Love the food! Burgers are always fresh. When I was put on a restrictive diet (no dairy and gluten), it was nice to know I could still come here and the flavor wasn't lost. Will always come here when I have a burger craving and happily recommend this place to others !
google avatar

Rory M.

Yelp
This place is amazing I 100% recommend Looks a bit shabby but the food makes up for it You won't be disappointed! They recently started outside dining which I really like , they also have a few tables inside and a kind of porch with big windows looking into the town. But great for a take out place if you are in a hurry! Completely recommend No complaints

John C.

Yelp
Consistently exceptional burgers. They have an excellent portobello burger for vegetarians. The onion rings are a must try. The service is excellent, and there is outdoor seating.
google avatar

George T.

Yelp
Mm, I have to dispute the $$ rating. See, Northampton is a college town, and like such places do, the local businesses soak the students hard. Northampton's especially prone to the syndrome, so there really AREN'T inexpensive places to grab a bite ... not when everyone's expecting the Smith students to walk in waving daddy's credit card. Local's one of the rare exceptions. You'd think they'd be waving around $20 "economy" burgers, but that's not the case at all. They serve a good burger, with a number of options, no fuss, no muss. There's a fair range of sides, a good range of beverages, and a kids' menu (something you also seldom see in Noho). It *is* a burger joint; don't expect more than that. But it's also the most inexpensive meal you can get in the downtown, and it's a good one to boot.
google avatar

Julie O.

Yelp
This was my second visit and it's so yummy! The burgers are interesting and fantastic -- probably the juiciest turkey burger I've ever had. I also appreciate there was a mistake with my burger and they quickly made it right. The sides are great. The poutine, buffalo fries, and fried pickles are all so so good. The beer selection was great as well. We will definitely return!
google avatar

Joseph S.

Yelp
Freshest burgers around! Local beef. Fries amazing. They have veggie burgers which are East tasty as well. Cramped area and byob which is cool.
