"Local Foods, a unique grocery store with a first-class butchery, is closing its public-facing market after eight years. The wholesale operations will continue. The market also featured a cafe helmed by chef Abra Berens, who is now a cookbook author and chef at Granor Farms in Michigan. Local Foods connected restaurants with local vendors and enjoyed record sales in its wholesale division last year." - Ashok Selvam

Excellent grocery neighborhood grocery. Deli, fresh cooked buffet, plus everything else to feed yourself and your family very well. They cooked amazing catered dinners for the holidays! Local Market is my first choice for groceries.

This gotta be the worst store in the neighborhood in South Shore. The Local Market Food on 71st/ Jeffrey. Security stopped me before I could do my shopping because of my shopping cart which is transparent enough for anyone to see through it. My point in saying this I was looked at as if I was a criminal. That shouldn't have happened but it did. I've decided to not shop at this store not because of this incident but because of WHO they are in this neighborhood!!

I truly appreciate how bountiful the produce section is. The different mushrooms, fruit, herbs, gourds, vegetables, greens, and vegetarian options (and even if you’re not vegetarian) is absolutely delightful. South Shore residents highly appreciate having healthy options to eat. Thank you 🤗

Stopped in Local Market today to grab some lunch and found out they offer my FAVORITE on-the-go quick bite, Soul Vegan!! Some of the employees in this establishment aren’t as friendly as other place but the amazing produce section makes up for lack of customer support. The prices are fair, the produce area, and did I mention that Local Market Foods has Soul Vegan products on the shelves…

I am from TX & as a southerner, I was definitely in awe when I walked in here. I was totally caught off guard when I noticed the grocery store had a buffet of hot food! I am not used to anything like that. the closest to a grocery store with a mini restaurant inside in Houston is Costco. And that is a bore seeing how you have to have a membership just to buy, it’s annoying. I was also in joy when I seen their cupcakes! the strawberry cheesecake cupcakes… ARE LITERALLY TO DIE FOR. seriously. I will be back in the summertime to really shop at the local market. BUT! I do want to advise those that even if you are getting cold or hot foods, ALWAYS CHECK THE EXPIRATION DATE! i bought a southwestern salad and had to throw it away because the lettuce wilted and smelled. if you are getting cold foods like soup, chicken salad or even a regular salad… eat it the same day or the next. don’t wait to save it for a different moment, it’s not gonna be good. I’m telling you, you will be upset. always ask the cooks how long has hot foods been sitting out, what time did the (let’s say shrimp fried rice) was cooked? always make sure! people nowadays will be selfish and not care for others.

Whoever made that Banana Pudding Cake today? Need that thang sucked off the bone. My goodness, I don’t usually like banana flavored stuff but the cake itself is light and the banana flavored is not over powering at all

If i could give 0 stars, I would. On several occasions, I have entered the store and noticed a strong odor of what appears to be spoiled meat and fish, particularly in the mornings. Additionally, I have observed mice droppings in the bakery area and along the chip aisle. Last Thanksgiving, I purchased a cake from the store, only to discover it was moldy, which caused illness in my entire family. Furthermore, I have concerns about the behavior of the owner, who often appears disheveled, with red eyes and concerning mannerisms, especially in the mornings. Given these issues, I believe it is imperative to involve city officials to address these matters promptly.

The qualities of meat, vegetables, fruits and snacks taste very delicious and outstanding. Also I would recommend any individual that needs to go grocery shopping for a good cooperative price. To come to this establishment to buy good qualities of food.

Yelp
I'm torn writing this review. As most others have said, South Shore was in desperate need for a grocery store. To have a local option, is really amazing! With that being said, cashier service is really hit or miss. There have been quite a few times (pre COV19 as well) where the credit card machines would be "down". Now, because of social distancing, lines are well into the aisles and this doesn't help even shopping flow. Before COV19, we did get one of the best rotisserie chickens I've ever had. However, after visiting the other day (Aug 2020) I was very surprised to see salad bars, and other open food bars. I'm sure there is a operational reason for this, but humans are disgusting. Im not sure why you would press your luck. Especially seeing the Heath Score posted here on Yelp. I normally shop at Trader Joe's in Hyde Park, but there are just somethings that TJs doesn't carry. For that, I am grateful for LM. Be prepared to wait trying to purchase liquor. If t LM makes it so hard to purchase hard alcohol, then maybe you just shouldn't carry.

Yelp
I have been going to local market for 3 years. It used to have the most wonderful atmosphere, the kind of place, that you want to go to shop, no matter what, but now, the quality of the food, especially the Deli, was a disappointment. They serve "Jerk chicken salad" that is just canned tuna with some Cayenne Pepper thrown in it and some onion. The last time I went I got some macaroni and cheese that was Kraft from the box with some cheap tasteless cheese sprinkled on top. It was a soggy mess. That " Plate of cooked food costed me $15. 00. Security will follow you around like you are going to steal something, but if you ask for help, ( I am in a wheelchair) they will through their hand, and pull out a device and walk off. I am saddened, and disappointed by a store that used to be an excellent place to shop.

Yelp
I really regret that my first time visiting this store was in a time when stores were more hectic than usual(March 2020, amid Covid 19 quarantine, no disinfecting supplies or hand sanitizer, plenty of toilet paper but it was going quickly). I really miss the Dominick's in this area and I'm glad something is there. Not just groceries but a hot and cold bar too(apparently they were written up for health inspections, according to Yelp, but apparently they got past that). The store was nicely organized but still needed longer gaps between aisles and cashiers. I didn't like but understood how small toiletries and alcohol was kept BEHIND a separate counter. Those items, even in non-crisis times, are vulnerable to shoplifting but it gives off a 'we don't trust you' vibe to the consumer. Checkout was ok, we got a lot of great deals, and we got a few items from the hot bar (breaded jalapeno and chicken wings, both very good). The Bus Trackers at the front of the store were a HUGE help, but we got an Uber home.

Yelp
Helpful staff good selection of produce and meat. I like the premade food selection and sit down area to eat inside.

Yelp

Yelp
Good Morning I have been coming in local market ever since it first open up & I have always been in a good mood upon entering , never a problem with any of the employees there. went in this Morning ( 7/5/23 ) 7:10 am for the sale , as usual when I get to the cashier I named two items that was on sale . instead of this male cashier just ringing items up he starts getting smart so I got smart back repeating what he was saying to me . what I would like to know is how do you fix your mouth and say to a customer ( You must didn't get none last night for the holiday ) that is a sexual harassment comment . You are a poor unprofessional excuse for an employee . I'm in Chicago IL & this was on 71st & Jeffery

Yelp
Great selection of produce, baked goods, international section, and other foods, swift service, and a lot to offer us in the beverage aisle, and often o Sundays have local businesses post up here to sell. Great neighborhood market on the south shore. Clean and helpful staff when you need something. B+G security Brenda Price works the rounds between here and Cricket Wireless. She is fun to talk to and is funny. e saw her at Cricket Wireless. She does a great job at securing the place and pays attention to everything.

Yelp
Local Market foods on 71st and Jeffrey in the Jeffery plaza have very good prices the customer service is outstanding the store is always clean they have a great variety of foods for all ethnics the hot foods bar is like it was cook in your own kitchen the Deli department have all the meats and cheese that you can think of the bakery pies and cakes are all fresh this is my holidays store to shop for all my cooking needs

Patti C.

Yelp
DO NOT BUY produce or meat from here! I only buy non perishables. They have a wide variety of bakery and deli and hot bar foods, but every time I go, something about it just looks off..I got lunch one day and well, everythings a little bland and the bakery goods are dry af. I asked an employee and apparently they don't make anything there! Tbh, I get the feeling that the meat and produce quality are sub par. I've also seen the sell by date RE-STICKERED on the sushi...LOL.. be ware. This place looks nice, but they're still selling crap meat. I hope somebody looks into this and shuts them down.

Tamara P.

Yelp
so rude... During a bad tornado storm every customer was put out of the store in the hallway by windows and no one felt safe but they locked the doors anyways after arguing with the customer.. never again I will put my money in that store. Also they need to learn the safety procedures of a tornado storm...,.

Yelp
Local Market is a long overdue addition to South Shore, a sprawling community that was without a major grocery store for over five years. Unfortunately, Local Market has some noticeable issues that need to be addressed immediately including rude staff, stale baked goods, and inconsistent produce. The most notable issue is their repeated sale of rubbery, inedible chicken. I have never had this problem anywhere else. When I alerted the store staff about the awful chicken, I was given the pithy "sorry, not sorry" response. South Shore is comprised of predominantly mixed income African-American residents, so I can't help to wonder whether this low quality meat is being offered intentionally. I would like to continue to patronize this store, but I can't risk my family's and my health any further or waste any more money. I'm taking my business elsewhere until Local Market stops trying to pass off trash as food. Heed customer feedback and do better!

Yelp
Love that the finally put a grocery store in the area. The store is clean and arranged very nicely. It is a full food hot bar and same cafe type that we ever food also. It has not let me down yet when I am looking for food options such as groceries.

Yelp
Rude Rude Rude Unprofessional Unprofessional Walked in the store the security guard became very aggressive because I entered the store through the wrong door! Asked me to leave, it was my first time in the store but don't worry I won't be returning. Sucks when people over doing simple things like this!

Yelp
Will never shop from there again I had placed a order through instacart this past Dec 26th they didn't have half of what I had on my list & the catfish that came in that green bag I had made it this past Saturday & I was sicker than a dog couldn't get out of bed I'm still feeling it a little today

Dee A.

Yelp
Love the store! Overdue in the neighborhood. Whoever the manager is though? Maybe he wants to stop being aggressive with his employees in front of customers. I was checking out and saw him scold a young lady like he was her father and she was 4 years old. He could have pulled her aside and addressed his concerns. Not sure how his behavior is for employee morale but it's definitely a turn-off to customers like myself. Chill out, dude! You're just the manager, you don't have a right to disrespect people.

JoAnn F.

Yelp
I was doing an Instacart order in Local Market and I asked a clerk where a product was located. She directed me in the direction by talking me as though I was dumb. She was very rude and unprofessional. She also talked to her coworker as though she was dumb in front of many people. I then went to retrieve the item in seafood and I didn't see it at first so I asked the butcher working in that department. Immediately he looked around and asked me if I was sure that it was this store. Duh! I'm on an app with a specific store to shop at!!! I looked down and there it was. He said oh they changed the packaging. I said oh ok reading is fundamental. He got offended, but I didn't mean nothing, but the truth because obviously he wasn't reading. He said he can read very well. So he was rude. I goes to checkout and the manager and two more employees were rude and unprofessional. Local market has an unprofessional staff. The manager didn't have a name tag on. He was the absolute worst! I wouldn't shop there again if it was the last an only store available!!!

Christa H.

Yelp
This is a great supermarket! It has all of the swag as a Mariano's, but in South Shore. I didn't purchase anything from the hot bar, but all the options were tempting! The store was well-stocked, clean, and the checkout lines moved fast - even though the store was crowded.

Yelp
Local Market was ok when it first opened we needed a grocery store because it was a food dessert for over 5 years .The Alderman Leslie Harriston was instrumental in helping to get South Shore a grocery store since Domminick closed down. This store however is very funky the odor is so atrocious you want to hurry and get you groceries and get out for some fresh air. It was like this once before and I reported it and they cleaned it out but now at present it is back to smelling like a morgue and rotted meat. I also notice we have a new manager and a lot of Mexican employee's. If you have ever been to a stankin Mexican store you will know what I am referring to. Something needs to be done about this stankin ass store again. As for me I still don't have a store to shop in the neighborhood I have to once again travel miles from my home in SouthShore to shop. Because I refuse to go back to this stankin ass store. We need help. Maybe Leslie Harriston will do something about it. Since she allowed it to come. I wonder if she shops in this store since she thougth she was helping us out. Plus the store is to expensive for this neighborhood. I guess we still have to take what we can get some third class shit as usual or nothing.

Yelp
Stopped in the store yesterday, Saturday, 09-26-20, to pick up some food for my mother. A friend had highly recommended their deli food. I am on a budget. I also know how to cook and don't mind doing so to save money. This day I was short on time and figured I'd patronize the neighborhood store. I put the food in the container and used the scale on the counter to weigh it so that I didn't overspend. Twice while I was taking my time to choose my items a young lady came over to instruct customers to wear gloves. I was impressed with the way they were keeping an eye on the food. I got just about a pound of food according to the scale: Three pieces of fish, about a half cup of spaghetti with meat and macaroni and cheese. I also selected a six-pack of roasted legs which was $4.99, which I thought was a good price. When I got to the counter the total weight for the pick-your-own food was 1.99 pounds, twice as much as the scale that was near the food showed. When I told the cashier that their scale over there, which I pointed to the scale near the deli food, was significantly different than the scale at the register she said it didn't work right or words to that effect but clearly indicated she knew the scale didn't work. I asked why didn't they let me know because they obviously saw me going back to it at least twice to weigh my food. She then told me that now that I've brought it to her she can tell me that it doesn't work, it's just "for show." I told her that I thought that was pretty underhanded and deceptive and asked for a manager. She told me that the manager won't be in until Monday. This big store is running on the weekend without a manager. Okay. If that's what you say. It's reasonable to expect that a scale sitting on the counter where food is sold by the pound will be used to weigh that food. This to me looks like a case of bait and switch. A customer uses the (defective) scale they put out for you, but when you get to the cashier they switch to a scale that registers twice as much as you expect to pay. If bait and switch is not the correct term, then deceptive business practices would definitely cover it. If the scale is there "for show" and doesn't weigh things accurately, you should put a sign on it saying so. Otherwise, you have people, like myself, who think you've put a scale out so that customers can know the weight of the food they're buying without having to inconvenience store staff, the same way you see scales in the produce department. I feel that if you purposely set out to deceive me and manipulate a situation to get me to spend more money in one area of your store I can't trust you not to try to cheat me somewhere else. They have lost me as a customer.

Jazzy J.

Yelp
I love the store! Stocked for the most part however the manager is so rude! He acts like he's your father and not a an manager. I talked and seen him many times and he just has a bad attitude!!

Linda L.

Yelp
Its good there is store again in the neighborhood, it could be a lot better. I've only shopped here a few times and each time I've been disappointed. Twice I've found expired food on the shelf. The first time when I brought the product to the cashier and told all the products were expired, she didn't seem to care. Yesterday my daughter got something from for me and the expiration date was December 12, 2020. If you shop at this store, please check the dates on everything you buy.

Diane B.

Yelp
When my partner & I first came to this store. We loved it! My daughter even enjoyed her "Customer in Training" mini shopping cart. The place has a full bar, hot bar, and an incredible bakery department. I never had any trouble going to this store until yesterday all because of their rude and disrespectful store manager. I was looking at the bakery department. They had a sign labeled "Fresh Donuts 2 for $1" just out in the open. Just the donuts on a baking sheet and a box of paper to grab them. I asked the lady at the register. "Do you have a container?" She just shrugged and gave me the donut. So I'm walking with my partner, chocolate is melting in my hand. I decided let me just eat it now since its melting. All of a sudden this man comes walking to me in my peripheral. "You can't do that in here! You can't eat that in here." I paused and asked "Excuse me?" "I'm the store manager and you cannot eat that in my store." I also explained to him I was on the way to pay but he kept pestering me about not eating the donut and following me to make sure I was going to the register when I wasn't even done shopping. He was giving my girlfriend & I are hard time. All over a donut. I lost my admiration for this new store. Like I cannot give my money to a place where their management is disrespectful. I paid my donut and left. I will not go there anymore. It be your own race just because they have a "title" that they can treat you any kind of way. He treated us like we were thugs, thieves when I have came to this store more than once. But I will no longer go there. I will find a place elsewhere. There is a way to speak to customers and react to a small situation and not be rude and unprofessional about it.

Polly E.

Yelp
We love this store. Great selection of produce , meat and fish. If they don't have what you are looking for, tell the manager and they will get it for you!

Martha M.

Yelp
This is a great grocery story. The produce selection is amazing and fresh. The employees are so nice but I think the could afford the staff during high volume hours better. What a great addition to the neighborhood.

Mary H.

Yelp
Better than Mariano's on 39th and Jewel on Cottage because there is are huge produce and meat sections with a wider variety of choice. Better than Trader Joe's cuz there is much more fresh food. I like Hp Produce but this is quintuple the choice.

Amare R.

Yelp
the cashier name tenishsa was very rude and mean when i first walked up to the line she told me to wait into the man in front leave to start putting my things on the belt she than rolled her eyes at me and said something underneath her breath! than she waited until the man walked out of the store to tell me to go ahead and put your stuff up there!!! she kelp walking away from the register and didnt say anything to me and when she came back she was playing with someone they was throwing things while i was in line trying to wait for her to get me my total and when i ask for the number to talk to someone she throw itbon the belt and said i can do you one better i can call him or them for you talking about who do you want to talk to because im the lead im like that don't have anything to do with with it i than ask for her to call someone and she call william to the door and when i ask him for her name hes going to say that he don't know her shes new im like so you dont know your-store employee and he was like call this number amd say the woman with the blue braids in her hair im like wow i had to look on my ticket to see her name!! the woman behind me told me that woman is always rude and mean to be honest i don't understand why is she still working their it made me so uncomfortable i will not be returning !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yelp
On 3/31/2020, I spoke to the manager of the store, Bill via phone call regarding a halal meat (Cresent meat) purchase that was made for my mom on 3/16/2020. I explained to the manager that when my mom went to cook the meat, the meat in fact was spolied. The sale by meat date on the packaging was 3/16/2020 which technically the meat should have not been sitting in the cooler for sale on that date anyway. The manager was not trying to hear my complaint/concern and was quick to say that he could not issue a refund on the meat due to the elaspe in time. First off, when a customer grocery shops for their household and in this case a full stock up of meats and etc, it is unlikely that you are going to eat all the meats/perishables in one sitting. Their policy on pershiables meaning meats is no return after three days of purchase and now due to the Corona virus, no return after 24 hours of sale. Households purchase meat to store in their freezers and bring out when needed so I guess if you purchase meat at the "Local Market" you have to cook everything within 24 hours. Just a heads up...be very careful when you purchase perishable items at the "Local Market" because they are taking advantage of their consumers. Bill was very rude, displayed no customer service skills and did not want to understand the issue that was happening. When asked to check the cooler that the meat was housed in to make sure it was operating properly, he said he would not because their was no issues.
