"Local is just thirteen minutes away from The Venice Venice. The rustic-chic atmosphere produces dishes rooted in local traditions with a surprising twist. Inspector notes: 'Here, ingredients from the lagoon are prepared using modern ideas and techniques, resulting in dishes that are carefully balanced and yet full of contrasting flavors.'" - MICHELIN Guide

23 Best Restaurants in Venice

"In a sea of intimate (read: tiny) restaurants, the amount of airy space in the contemporary, pared-back Local comes as a shock. Chef Matteo Tagliapietra strayed for several years from his native Burano to work at Nobu, Noma, and a host of other gastronomic temples. He brought home Far Eastern influences that are unique in Venice, though his feet are firmly planted in the lagoon city. Each of his constantly changing dishes is a joy for the eye. This is a venue for serious food lovers." - Anne Hanley

We visited Ristorante Local with high expectations, given its Michelin star status. While the experience wasn’t bad, it definitely didn’t deliver the “wow” factor we were hoping for. The food was decent, but not particularly memorable or surprising. Service was polite but didn’t feel especially warm or attentive—nothing stood out as special. The atmosphere was nice, but again, nothing that really elevated the evening. For a set menu close to €200 per person, we expected a more refined, curated, and emotional journey. It felt like something was missing—whether in terms of creativity, flavors, or service presence. At this level, the bar is high, and unfortunately, Local didn’t quite reach it.

What a phenomenal experience! We had such a great time at Ristorante Local - big bottles and even bigger hearts!! The service was above and beyond, so friendly. Everything was delicious, interesting, and beautiful!

Thank you, Matteo, Culinary’s team, and the staff for their hospitality. We all enjoyed everything, i.e., atmosphere, cuisine, and service. It is one of the best restaurants in Venice.

My wife and I went here for dinner to celebrate her birthday. It was simply amazing! Very course was an absolute delight. Surprising tastes that you do not find very day even in other Michelin Star restaurants. I am surprised they only have one star. They definitely deserve a second one. The birthday surprise was just the icing on the cake to complete an amazing and unforgettable experience! If you look for something special in Venice you have to come here.

First of all I love the atmosphere of this place, using wood to give its warm atmosphere. One aspect I truly appreciated was how each dish was accompanied by a card describing its preparation and sharing interesting stories about the dish itself. This added a thoughtful and educational touch to the dining experience. For the first dish, I was served seaweed jelly paired with Prosecco, corn, and a canelé. Upon tasting, it was clear that the dish had an Asian-fusion influence, particularly with the inclusion of seaweed jelly, which is not commonly used in Italian cuisine. While I admired their attempt to incorporate seaweed, I felt it missed the mark. Instead of highlighting the umami that seaweed can offer, the dish accentuated its fishiness, which overpowered the other flavors and made it less enjoyable. On the other hand, the third dish, a sour butter risotto, was exceptional. The combination of the tangy sourness with the creamy texture of the risotto created a wonderfully balanced and flavorful dish. It stood out as a creative and successful innovation. For dessert, I was served ice cream that was heavily infused with Madagascar vanilla. While the use of vanilla was evident, the bright yellow color of the ice cream gave it an artificial appearance, which felt inconsistent with the restaurant’s name, “Local.” This visual choice detracted from the otherwise premium impression of the dessert, given the associations people might have with artificial coloring. Overall, I appreciated the creativity and effort that went into the dishes, but some elements felt misaligned with the restaurant’s concept and could be refined further to deliver a more cohesive dining experience.

Google
It was our best dinner during the honeymoon trip. The very attentive service, knowledge about food & wine, Friendliness and no need to say about the taste and quality of the food, everything was perfect. We had a 7 item course menu, and it didn't feel short. Each menu was exceptional and creative. We will definitely revisit whenever we come back to Venezia, and then will go with the wine pairing because we had the same amount of wine anyway. Thank you for making our best night!!

Google
Amazing experience. The service was great. Each dish was inspired by traditional Venetian cuisine but with an inventive and modern twist. Each dish was served with a detailed description and everything was incredibly fresh.

Google
This place was an amazing experience on my honeymoon in Venice. When you first walk, we were greeted by the owner and sat at our table. The serving staff had an incredible attention to detail and knew exactly what our table needed before we even said anything. We did the 9 course tasting menu paired with their wine selections. Everything tasted absolutely amazing and the presentation of the dishes was gorgeous. This is a great experience and highly recommend.

Yelp
While this restaurant is right at the base of a small bridge over Rio de la Pleta, there were a lot fewer walk-in lunch guests than I would have expected, allowing me to continue my "no-reservations" tour. Everything was going pretty good, I was enjoying myself, although I think there might have been a bit too much foam on some plates, hiding the ingredients. The chef even left his glass-walled kitchen and interacted with several tables, including mine. This was before the servers presented the palate cleanser, after the main (amberjack). Surprise! This was on a small spoon that the server stuffs into your mouth. (What was it? It doesn't matter.) This seemed sort of like those obnoxious teppanyaki places, where the cook (not chef) squirts a plastic bottle of saki into the open mouths of patrons. I guess this is supposed to be "fun," but the four men in their business lunch, just a table away, did not seem that pleased when four servers fed them. The chef is very young. I guess this is one of the many minor things that, while not affecting the excellent taste of the food, can distract from the experience. Like the shattered glass on the iPad menu. Or the chipped plates. Or the giant 2m crack in the 10m window between the kitchen and dining area. I'm sure these small problems can easily be addressed by the time I return. 2022 10 03. M1.

Yelp
We made a reservation months ago. Several weeks before our appointed day and time, we received an email that our reservation had been canceled. No explanation and no apology. I recommend booking with another nice restaurant so you are not similarly disappointed.

Yelp
This is not your typical Venetian restaurant. Every dish has a unique twist and we thoroughly enjoy all of them. They made a pasta for our little one - it looks simple but tastes heavenly. And it's a pleasant surprise to meet the chef.

Yelp
This place has absolutely left us speechless! We first try to go there one evening without reservation and while they couldn't accommodate us, they went above and beyond to call other restaurants till they found a good one. We then came the day after for lunch and oh boy... food and presentation was so... WOW! A mix between Italian and Japanese because the chef has a Japanese wife. The service is impeccable, we enjoyed the company of the sommelier who chatted with us and gave us so much information about the restaurant and about the found. If you are in Venice, you can't miss this spot!!

Yelp
I was in Europe for the first time in the fall, and had the great pleasure to visit Local. I have not stopped thinking about it since, and each and every dinner I have is subconsciously compared to the one I had here. My friend said this: "I have been all over the world, and this has to be one of the top two restaurants I have ever dined in." And it's true. I have literally never seen a staff so well-trained or well-prepared for service as this one. I am not making this up. It's not just the mind-blowing service here, either. The food is on par with the best places in New York or Boston. The chef is able to take Venetian cuisine (which, I must admit, was a bit jarring to me) and create the most palatable, intriguing little plates I've ever seen. We had a chance to sample their extravagant tasting menu. Think Japanese/Venetian Fusion. We were served their fascinating take on Baccalà Mantecato (Salted Cod) in the shape of a gondola with a Lemon Hazelnut Sauce. We had a course of Scallops Ceviche with Nori and Microgreens. There was seafoam on my chocolate dessert. Molecular Gastronomy meets artful Asian technique in bite after bite after bite. Astounding. I have no idea how they pull this off. The servers place all of the dishes before the guests at once. They clear them the same way. It is almost as though the beautiful plates drop out of the sky onto your table and then vanish when you are not looking. They carafe the WATER. Wtf is that? Yes, they crumb the table. Yes, they break down the menu in detail. Yes, they fold your napkin when you leave the table. But do you know what else they do? You don't. They literally...spoon fed us a palette cleanser at the table. They fed us by hand. That happened. I honestly think I would feel angered by this forwardness had the service not been so over the top. I have never experienced anything like it before, and I probably never will again. Hats off to you, Local. You have officially raised the bar for every last restaurant in Italy, the US, and around the world. I long for the day when I can come back to you.

Yelp
World class seasonal, local tasting menu using techniques from European, Swedish, and Japanese cuisine. Service and wine pairings were perfect as well. We had the 9 course tasting menu with wine pairings. Each dish was well crafted: flavor, texture, presentation, story, pairing were each perfect. We started outdoors with an intro, then amuse bouche and sparking wine, before moving indoors for the rest of the courses. We've been to dozens of Michelin star restaurants (including a handful of two and three star). Local clearly deserves a star of their own. Keep it up, chefs!

Yelp
Heard about this place from our airbnb hosts and glad that we came here for dinner during our time in Venice. We made reservations but there was plenty of space on a Wednesday night. The ambiance is modern yet has a rustic feel to it. Clean and simple. The service was incredible from walking in the door to getting out. A+ for service. We got the 3 course meal for 60 euros per person although was more like a 8 course meal. They have a huge wine selection and also a wine cellar of sorts inside the restaurant itself. We got the local white wine which was dry and very good. Also got a Bloody Mary which was pretty good as well. For food, we got the risotto with go which was very good. Rich and creamy, slightly fishy at first but once you're past it, you can taste all the other flavors. Also got the lamb pasta dish and the fish of the day. The lamb was perfectly cooked and amazing. The local fish was very good as well, very fresh although not sure about the pairing with the turmeric sauce. They served us a bunch of complements from the chef and we were incredibly full towards the end. The bread of note was very fresh and was great with the olive oil. For dessert, the ciocolatto dish was very unique and interesting; nothing quite like it. The tiramisu was alright. Overall, great experience during our brief stay in Venice. Would recommend it if you're around. Overall 4.5 stars.

Yelp
Michelin-starred so you know the cooking and craft will be at the highest level. And it was. But rather expensive even taking that into account, and despite its name it seems like a restaurant you could find in London or New York, so I'd probably go for more overtly Venetian places in the future.

Preston S.

Yelp
Not surprising given the Michelin star...but was one of the best meals I've ever had in my life. Completely unique and interesting tasting menu rooted in classic Italian flavors. Fantastic service, beautiful design, and thoughtful presentation and dining experience. The high price point makes for a 'special occasion meal' that will probably only happen once in a lifetime but I'm so glad I got to go. Incredible.

Yelp
They earned a One Star Michelin rating this year. Amazing quality and creativity. Congratulations LOCAL!

Yelp
My son (12) and I were desperate to have an above average meal in Venice. Good wine is easy to secure, but quality food is a tougher task. I spoke with the bar man at Bacaro Risorto (also recommended for cichetti & excellent wine) and asked for a suggestion. Without hesitation he said "Local". We were off! The restaurant is decorated in a simple but lovely contemporary style. We arrived a few minutes before 7pm & they asked that we return in 10 minutes. Ok? I would have seated us at the bar to wait, but hey, it's their rules! We came back as requested. We were seated without hesitation and offered the menu & wine list. I ordered a prosecco and then went about considering the quite tempting menu. I chose the Sole, potatoes, spinach, sprinkled with hazelnuts and lemon with potato cream sauce € 22 as an appetizer. It was delicate, visually appealing and a nice texture combination of velvety fish and crunchy hazelnut. In short, a winner. My son ordered the paccheri pasta with slow cooked rabbit, taggiasche olives and rocket € 22. The rabbit and accompanying sauce were excellent, the pasta underdone. He polished it off nonetheless and there was a generous amount of rabbit which was a nice surprise. After a VERY long wait, and another slowly imbibed glass of prosecco, my main dish arrived. Fillet of cod cooked at low temperature with borlotti beans, red onion slivers and prosciutto consommée topped with 2 chicarones € 32. Totally worth the wait. Served dry with the warm prosciutto broth poured from a small carafe into your bowl. The fish was perfectly cooked. The beans seemed not to add much to the dish and I would have preferred scallions over the strength of the red onions with the subtlety of the fish and it attendant broth. The chicarones were inspired. The tender bite of fish accompanied by the crispy nearly oil free bite was truly excellent. Bottom line? You should eat at Local. It's a damned fine restaurant! Head and shoulders above the typical Venetian restaurant.

Yelp
Local is a nice, romantic spot next to (surprise!) a charming canal. This restaurant shares the same owner as Ristorante Wildner, which is just down the street. Local is the more expensive, more beautifully-plated cousin of Ristorante Wildner. Despite that, my wife and I preferred Ristorante Wildner. The food at Local was inventive and creative. However, it lacked the heartiness and depth of flavor we found at at Wildner. Two of our dishes were also over-salted. We ordered: - The scallops starter (fresh, fleshy pieces of scallop) - Rabbit ragu pasta (my favorite dish, though on the salty side) - The risotto with bonito flakes, powdered nori, and a white fish (briny and savory) Overall, the service was very good, and the entire staff was super polite and attentive. That said, we preferred the more casual, family-like atmosphere of Wildner.

Yelp
Room side Welcome by a boy with glasses who tries to decipher his computer screen for long minutes while the customer has booked and given his credit card in advance - which is not what all the great restaurants in Venice do - then in less than 10 mm all the staff scrolls in turn to your table one at a time to offer you sparkling water, which he takes out of a bottle and turns it over by shaking it quickly in a carafe, to remove the gas! Funny idea when other Venetian gourmet restaurants started to produce their own sparkling water in a closed circuit, good for the climate and the environment.... ´Tous the other waiters scroll one after the other ´ one after the other for the menu, another for the wine, another for the cutlery, enough to make you dizzy... in short no waiter dedicated to your table..... Venetians There is a lack of human warmth, smiles, making the client feel comfortable... but that is not the main thing. The main thing is that here you are served an exceptional meal, you have to say it and write it down On the menu side, then: exceptional meal some Vietnamese style chips with dry ink and truffle powder... then a small individual ball of bread just out of the oven with parmesan and sourdough Scallops with candied tomatoes and butter with revisited breadcrumbs, Sole in homage to the dish made by Venetian mothers for their children... with hazelnuts, spinach, lemon and small mashed potatoes sieved like ROBUCHON. Risotto cooked on demand with a Japanese look...!! with nori seaweed, why not? well, but that doesn't add much to this delicious risotto.... Smoked and marinated eel for 4 days with a mango miso whose very delicate taste is reminiscent of the 5th taste of the Japanese: Umami, tasty brought by the miso mixed with mango whose sweet taste is a reminder of Edo cuisine in 16th century Japan ( Marrying sugar and salted and in addition to the smoked taste that makes this dish even more complex). To finish this gastronomic 7-course menu for 95 € a spoon put in the mouth of pana cota with bitter orange, followed by a chocolate ice sorbet with chocolate crumble, salicornia, seaweed and sea water foam to remind you of the Barena - which is a muddy islet that only appears at low tide -, second desert with lemon- apple and a Pisco foam . Deserts as well as dishes are a total success. The only negative point is the staff in the dining room, who don't seem to have been through such good Italian hotel schools, you can feel it, the four of them moving around to serve 4 plates at a table of 4 or 2 for a table of 2, sweeping the tablecloth after each totally useless dish... and quickly makes you dizzy. This restaurant is run only by its chef, so let's hope he is a shareholder or owner so that he can stay there with his brigade. Abstracted from the room, the kitchen is at the height of a Michelin star. Congratulations again to the chef whose restaurant is only run by his work and that of his brigade.

Yelp
One of the best food experiences I've had. 7+ course Surprise meal with wine pairings and it was a surprise in all the best ways possible. Staff was friendly and extremely attentive. Starting with some super HOT towels for your hands. Had a glass of Prosecco that was served in these beautiful stemless flutes. My husband and I aren't picky eaters. If you are a picky eater... just go somewhere else. If you are adventurous then eat here. Favorite bites were the paper then cuddle fish, Artichoke Broth (seriously wow) The Eel was just to DIE for!!! The sweetbreads, the Veal brain, the Dessert! This was well worth the money! Perfect ending to my 42nd birthday in Venice!

Yelp
We had been traveling in Italy from Florence, Cinque Terre, Genova, Verona, Vincenza and Venezia; and were searching for "new culinary" experience. We happily discover it at Local a masterful culinary experience for all the senses. This new startup restaurant opened in late June 2015 and we were fortunate to be able to participate in its first month of operations in July 2015 with delicious savory and sweet gastronomical adventures. We were warmly greeted by host/co-owner Benedetta who along with her brother started Local with a family strongly rooted in the Venezia restaurant world since 1960s. The atmosphere is modern, open, sleek, playful and inviting for diners and a comfortable visual break from the traditional Venetian restaurant setting. The menu includes various locally sources ingredients of fish, chicken and seafood as well as the abundant selection of local & regional wines. We were amazed by the spectacular tomato salad! Our chicken and pasta selections were simply visually stunning and incredibly delicious. Benedetta and the entire Local team were extremely attentive, hospitable and very friendly & engaging. As a new restaurant we were amazed by the level of excellent service, food & wine selections and overall dining experience. Bravo! We look forward to visiting Local again soon on future travels to Venezia!

Yelp
We had the 5 course tasting menu and the food was creative, fresh, and quite delicious. It felt more like 8 courses with all the little treats they bring! The ambiance is modern yet has a rustic feel to it. Clean and simple. The service was incredible from walking in the door to getting out. A+ for service. The chef and waiters went out of there way to accommodate us and created a memorable meal. We loved it and would highly recommend.

Yelp
Easily the best service I've ever experienced and I am a snob for good service. In addition, the olive oil with bread? Best I've ever tasted. The wine? A gorgeous Italian white. Small winery. Entree was gnocchi like over never had. Simply out of this world. Prices quite moderate. But life than anything else, just spectacular. 5 different people had a hand in managing this one person. Just what I would dream of.

Yelp
While I feel badly about giving 1 star to anyone, I have to say this was not only the most expensive meal I have ever purchased but the worst tasting food I have ever been served. I understand my taste might not be the same as everyone else's but by the looks on people's faces around our table we were not the only ones suffering. Most courses were inedible. I took one bite of several and had to give up due to an overactive gag reflex. One particularly hideous dish titled Sea 2018 was an assortment of raw sea creatures hiding under a blanket of coagulated cuddlefish ink. If that doesn't turn your stomach just wait until the next course, and wait you will. Although the meal was a New Years Eve price fix special we waited up to 40 minutes for so much as an amuse bouche to grace our table. The meal in total lasted nearly 4 hours and seeing how we were there for a "special" New Year's Eve tasting we nearly had to ring it in with our biggest mistake of the previous year. If you're planning on having a nice meal I'd make other arrangements.

Yelp
90 mins of Fantastic service, food and ambiance! Quiet, contemporary and very clean! Awesome waiters that we're very informative. Food was plated with superb aesthetic appeal! We will return!

Yelp
I had the pollo alla diavola and my girl had the John Dory fish. My chicken was tender and tasty. The waiter said it was marinated for two days. There were 3 pieces, each served on top of a different vegetable. The fish was light and not fishy with a tasty sauce. The presentation of the plates was very artful. A nice touch. The main portions were small, so you'll need to order multiple courses if you are hungry. The restaurant has a nice, trendy, modern ambiance. The waitstaff were all friendly and helpful. Bread was served before the meal. There were 3 types (whole grain, white and lavosh squares). The house white wine was very nice. The bottom line: A solid performance all around. For the price, I'm calling it 4 stars.

Yuki Y.

Yelp
For the presentation and service, I will give 4-5stars. However all meals I got (I tried 7 dishes) were overly salted and I could not taste the materials. I also suggested wine tasting with it. So I agreed, before I ordered, I said I did not care about white wines, but they brought whites anyways, they did not consider each customers' preferences, I guess(I did not like none of whites, red were ok, not great) and they gave very small amount of each, too. Well, if I go there again, I may order a la carte.

Yelp
An exquisite gem not far from St Marks. We had the 5 course tasting menu with the wine pairing. Everything is local and most of it is delicious and presented in a fancy way. The service is extremely attentive. While using local foods and Venetian styles, also incorporates some of the most current, and sometimes unusual, food styling.

Yelp
Beautiful ambiance restaurant, in a city full of tourist traps. The chefs tasting menu was tempting but decided to order a la carte because the pork belly tempted my boyfriend, and the gnocchi tempted me. My boyfriend ordered the conch spaghetti and pork belly. He was not a fan of the conch because it was too fishy but thought the pork belly was juicy and flavorful, although the conch sauce on the side was again too fishy. I ordered the aubergine tartar which was pretty lackluster, all the flavor was on the top (a little salty in certain areas, but the middle was bland). The kefir and mint reduction on the aubergine again provided little flavor for the dish. However, the black truffle, wild mushroom, beetroot gnocchi was incredible. Even my boyfriend, a staunch carnivore found it the most tasty dish we had. Would give this place a 3.5 or 4/5 not because of quality of food but because some combinations are incredible while others are very lackluster. Still would recommend to anyone.

Jessica M.

Yelp
Our best meal in Venice! I will be dreaming of the lamb pasta for years to come. Best cocktails on the island. The service is top notch the restaurant is beautiful The food is a work of art and delish! Dining here is a must while in Venice. Make sure to book your reservation in advance.

Darrell R.

Yelp
4 September 2018 went with a couple. Great service, great food $330 for three people including a bottle of wine so a bit pricey. Had the Local menu which is five services that expanded to 8 including desserts and drinks

Polly T.

Yelp
Fantastic food and service! Upscale casual dining with minimalist clean decor. Food is modern Italian cuisine with Asian influences. A lovely gem of a restaurant run by a brother /sister team.

Jodi J.

Yelp
You'd think that the owners would go out of their way to be friendly with an overpriced menu, but you'd be wrong. Incredibly rude and disappointing food for the price.

Peter S.

Yelp
Probably the best and most progressive food in Venice. Go for the 5 course tasting menu and prepared to enjoy a high-end gourmet experience that rivals any big international city restaurant.

Melissa B.

Yelp
I'm posting my first review on Yelp just to say this: Local is worth every penny. It was right across from our hotel and it took us four days to stop in for dinner and it was the best decision of our entire week. I got the chicken alla diavollo and it was so tender, juicy, and delicious. My husband had the ravioli and absolutely loved it. The wait staff was helpful and explained the desserts for us. Don't let the mention of seaweed scare you off, combined with the chocolate it is the most masterful taste sensation I've ever experienced!! Please don't pass this one up!

Wendy O.

Yelp
We so wanted to love this place but amount other things, they literally have "slow food." We showed up right as they opened, but reservations are recommended--for now. Many would be diners were turned away. It seems that with all the tables full, the kitchen has a hard time keeping pace. Our baby octopus appetizer came with three whole octopus. Heads on and "full." We tried, but ultimately we couldn't eat the insides of the heads. The table next to us had no problem, except one head exploded onto the man's shirt and tie when he tried to cut into it. We next had two pasta dishes and the pasta was too al dante-we've been eating pasta for 11 days straight and know what good "al dante" pasta "feels" like. In particular the dish with the lamb was just shy of crunchy pasta. The dish itself was flavored nicely, though my diner companion thought it was salty. The other dish we had was a special with baby shrimp. It was quite fishy and there were shells in many of our initial bites. We just couldn't finish it because of the shells. We wouldn't give this another chance, should we be in Venice again.
