Locks

"Locals love this welcoming fire-lit restaurant, which sits in a glorious spot overlooking the canal – downstairs it’s buzzy, while upstairs is more intimate. Natural flavours are to the fore on the concise seasonal menu and dishes are given subtle modern touches." - Michelin Inspector

The 38 Essential Dublin Restaurants

"Sunday lunch is a bit of an industry secret at this lovely canal-side restaurant, where you’ll find the room filled with off-duty chefs. A few recent tasty morsels included ox tongue on tiny waffles with pickled girolles; dry-aged beef tartare with smoked marrow; and Castletownbere lobster with burnt onion." - Corinna Hardgrave

Nice experience here that we had Xmas dinner at Locks. The beef tartare was great! And the dessert was tasty, fresh in mouth not too sweet. Impressed by the side dishes. Service is warm and friendly. Very good.

Awesome dinner! Every was great. Yellowtail, venison pie, guiness ice cream with caramel. Service was great. the place was pretty. Pixe fix made it very easy for a big party and lots of sides that come with the meal. Will definitely go back! Menu always changing.

Such a beautiful location it was a shame we didn’t enjoy our meal. It was a set menu of €49 which is fine but think it would be great to have a choice of 2 courses instead of having all 3 - The cheese was an additional €8 which I’m not sure why as there is no prep needed and bread was an additional €5. The food all looked beautiful but not to our taste. Crab starter was cold dressed crab with warm bisque and the potatoes for the main dish of pork just were soggy and felt old. Dessert was great! Would be lovely to see a more approachable menu - we both struggled to pick anything off the menu which is rare for us. Overall there was a lot of staff on for a small number of guests and our glasses were constantly empty and the food looked beautiful but just odd flavour and texture combination. Left very dissatisfied.

This is a hidden gem. The food was genuinely outstanding. We got 3 starters and the steak as a main. Absolutely blown away by the skill. Service was friendly and really well paced. Love this place

Google
Really special dinner experience. It’s a classy dining room with attentive service. Our cocktails were pretty and tasty. The food was outstanding! Beautifully presented and delicious. The oysters were a standout with a fabulous sauce, and my fish was cooked perfectly. Make sure you get a reservation in advance when coming to Dublin, it’s definitely well worth a visit.

Starters and mains are sublime, but desserts need a little more attention. The service was friendly and helpful, with nothing but compliments being deserved. All things considered one of the best - if not the best - Irish restaurant I have ever been to.

Party of 3 made a last minute late lunch reservation on a Sunday. Greeted promptly and was led to upstairs dining area. It's cosy room with 5 tables. Our server gave us plenty time to look over the menu while getting us our drinks. We ordered sourdough bread to share and that butter was to die for. I had the bluefin tuna and it's as beautiful as it tastes. My wild cod was nicely done with a lot of flavor for such a lite fish. The restaurant was also thoughtful enough to cook up a non-diary dessert for me with abundance of figs and raspberries. Well done.

Google
I think this restaurant deserves a star. We loved every dish from the bread to the desserts. The dishes were simple and effortless but with lots of technical skills involved behind it. The bread and butter were so good. If i would have to be picky, the butter was slightly oversmoked to my taste (but it was still very tasty). For starter, the beef tartar and celeriac were both very tasty. Well balanced and presented especially the beef tartar. Love the potato crisps that come with the beef tartar. For mains, gnocchi and skate were both well cooked and delicious. As an ex pastry chef myself, I think the shortcrust pastry for the pumpkin tart can be improved. It was soft and not crumbly. Overall, very pleased with our dinner. I wish this restaurant is in London and I will definitely visit them regularly.

Yelp
By complete coincidence a glowing review of Locks appeared in the Irish Times the day after our visit and I have to say it completely reflected our collective opinion. Simply superb, one of the best meals I've had in Dublin in a long, long time. Cocktails all round as we were celebrating a birthday. As you do. The highlight, however, had to be the Delmonico steak for 2 which two hungry men shared and devoured with satisfaction. Our companions both opted for the cod which as equally good. The starters were sublime, an explosion of taste, imagination and sumptuousness. Be warned, though, the menu is short with only 4 choices for mains. But they'll get there. Can't wait to go back. It's not cheap so is very much a special occasion destination. Is 'Tuesday' a special occasion? Asking for a friend.

Yelp
Walking aimlessly through Dublin we found Locks. Actually not, we found it because it was recommended by a local chef! We went on a Wednesday night and it was packed! Yet, the staff tried to find us a table. After a few minutes, they hostess came back with a big apology telling us she could not sit us because there were a lot of reservations coming in. While all of this was happening, I was just looking from the bar to the beautiful synchronicity in the kitchen. I had to reservations for the night after! The next day we came in and some of the staff recognized us and thanked us for coming back. That meant the world to us! The food was insanely good. BEST GAZPACHO EVER! The rib eye was cooked to perfection, and all the sides just accompanied the main dish absolutely perfectly. When in Dublin (and if you are lucky enough to live in such an amazing city) go to Locks. You will not regret it

Yelp
We just returned from Dublin and this was our best meal. Our party of four were seated upstairs overlooking the canal, so request one if those spots if you can. The view was perfect and the decor was gorgeous. Service was the only glitch in our experience. It was never clear who our server was and that seemed very spotty. When servers came though, they were pleasant. Every course we had was outstanding. A smoked haddock soup was so good we ordered another. The beet salad was brilliant. Both fish mains were excellent and the desserts and cheese plate were creative and tasty.

Yelp
Visiting Dublin for the first time. Made reservations based on Michelin Guide and it did not disappoint! The White Lady cocktail was delicious and we enjoyed every course. The only downside was the fact that in a nearly empty restaurant (when we first arrived) we were going to be seated in a high traffic area instead of any of the other quieter locations. We had to ask to be moved.

Yelp
Grrrrrr so I wanted to treat my fiancé to a nice lunch in Locks. I emailed to make a reservation, got a response with available times and I responded with the day and time that suited. When we went to Locks, the table wasn't booked - we got a table in the end though. We were pretty much ignored, we had to ask for a menu with an over enthusiastic waitress. We ordered the sourdough bread with the butter was delicious! We shared the lunch special; steak, beef, spuds with snails and it was delicious but the portions were small :( Ahhhh I dunno, but I couldn't wait to leave, it was really busy and I get it, I really do but seriously I was ready to pay good money for good food and service and got substandard service. Great ambiance, good food albeit small portions but customer service wasn't great.

Yelp
Great, except for burnt broccoli that tasted like lighter fluid. What happened?! Everything else was lovely. Weird decision, or accident?

Yelp
While visiting Dublin, Ireland, I was told that I NEEDED to have dinner at Locks. My friend that made the recommendation lives just down the street and goes there on a frequent basis. Upon being seated, I notified my waitress that I had severe allergies to shellfish. She looked at me, smiled and said, "we will take care of you, so please don't worry." I didn't. The bread and butter were some of the best that I have ever had. Our waitress explained to me that they pastry guy makes the bread each morning. Wow, it was awesome! The steak tar tar, according to my brother in law was tremendous. He stated that it was flavorful, presented really well on the wooden rounds and was a great start to his meal. We both had the grilled steak with the grilled portabello mushroom and onion rings. The presentation of the meal was in the center of the plate. No matter what side you looked at, you saw a luscious steak, a beautifully grilled portabello mushroom and onion rings. Each steak is cooked to the customers liking. I asked for medium well (I'm not a fan of medium steaks) and it was well done. No worries from me as cooking a medium well steak is an art to learn. The steak, while well done, was tender. The seasonings, whatever they were, made the steak juicy. The portabello mushroom was equally juicy. Portabello mushrooms can be tricky to cook. However, this chef and his assistants have mastered the art of cooking them while retaining the flavor and NOT making them chewy. Major kudos to the chef and his staff on achieving this. Because the amount of food was plenty and very filling, we skipped dessert. I can only imagine how pleasing the flavors of the desert would have been on our palette. The restaurant, while small, does a great business. At times, we had to wait for some things but it's because the staff were very busy. The small inconvenience of us having to wait for something a little bit extra was negated by the quality of service and food that we received. When I'm back in Dublin, I WILL be back to Locks for a meal.

Yelp
This is definitely a hidden gem, tucked inside a residential neighborhood it was the perfect spot to end a day of visiting tourist attractions. Reservation were fairly easy to get, we booked one day prior. The food was excellent from food playing presentation to the taste. The fun part is that the menu is changing daily, so you can constantly dine there!!! The staff was also very attentive to our table, come to use to ask about the quality of the food, refilling water and asking about if we needed more drinks. The best part, it was very affordable for the quality and service that we received.

Yelp
Locks is a special place. It is an experience like no other. The world class food blows my mind every single time I'm lucky enough to visit. The problem here is that it's all so good that you want to order the entire menu. For me, the star of the show is the beef, I have never tried anything like it ever before. The wine list is perfect. The staff go above and beyond the call of duty in making each visit one to remember. Highly recommend experiencing Locks if you are ever in Dublin. I'd give it 5+ *'s if possible.

Yelp
Fantastic find. High-end restaurant quality, service and presentation at amazingly reasonable prices. I had been to the old Locks (can't remember how many years ago) and it didn't stick with me, but this is now one of the best value spots in Dublin. Crab starter was perfectly light with complementary flavours, chateaubriand was the outstanding main course (though everyone in the party of 7 was impressed), and the date pudding dessert was perfectly executed. Only qualm was that cheese plate could do with a few more varieties. Wine recommendation (when we asked for it, after an initial misstep) was spot on. Will be back, regularly.

Yelp
''Twas late at night, me stomach a-grumbled, and a faint light summoned me in the distance. I stumbled down the canal and lo and behold, it was Locks. Lovely, lovely food and service. Halibut and scallops were deftly prepared and paired with crisp unusual white wine selections. Wander down the canal, you won't be disappointed.

Yelp
Went for dinner. It's a beautiful restaurant in a beautiful location. The food was delicious, with the exception of the smoked salmon butter which was far to heavy on the smoke for my taste. The wine was incredible and the service was amazing. Definitely recommend and would return!

Yelp
We passed by Locks one Sunday late afternoon and thought it looked LOVELY, so made a reservation for a Sunday late afternoon lunch. The entire experience was wonderful, including, food, service and atmosphere. The menu has loads of options, the staff is accommodating and everyone is clearly so happy to be there, guests start chatting with each other.

Yelp
Hands down the best food I had in Dublin in a long time. I had the salmon tartare with avocado puree and it was full of flavour. For main I went for the venison & chestnut suet pudding and it was delicious. It was part of the early market menu which is €30 for three courses, incredible value for the quality of food. It is definitely my new favourite restaurant in Dublin.

Yelp
We tried their early bird and it was so good it brought us back for my girlfriends birthday. The food is simply wonderful and very well priced for what you get.
