Lockside Bar & Grill is one of those hidden gems you're glad you stumbled upon. Tucked at the very end of a shopping center, you might not even notice it's there--but once you do, you'll be glad you stopped in.
The interior dining room is pretty basic and nothing particularly memorable at first glance. But don't let that fool you--the magic happens when you step out the side door. The outdoor deck area is the star of the show, lined with palm trees and overlooking the Albemarle and Chesapeake Canal. There are covered rocking picnic tables right by the water, a spacious covered bar, and even a second seating area that opens fully to the outdoors, giving it a great breezy, indoor-outdoor vibe.
This casual spot is great for a laid-back lunch or a relaxed evening with drinks. The service was friendly and on point--our waitress made a great recommendation that I'll be raving about for a while: the crab-stuffed avocado salad. The avocado halves (yes, four of them!) are packed with crab meat, lightly battered, and fried to golden perfection. Honestly, forget the salad--those avocados deserve their own spotlight and would make a fantastic shareable appetizer. That said, the salad itself was fresh and flavorful, and I'd come back just for that dish alone.
Drinks were well-made, prices were moderate, and the overall atmosphere is perfect for unwinding by the water. Lockside isn't flashy, but it's definitely worth discovering. I'd absolutely return the next time I'm in the area.
