Auberge de la Tour

"Located in the heart of a medieval village, this stone property with its corner tower and spiral staircase, is teeming with charm, and it is here that Renaud Darmanin has transformed this former café into a gastronomic outpost. Following his studies at the Chamalières hotel school, Darmanin went on to hone his skills at some of the world’s leading restaurants: at Paul Bocuse in Lyon; with Frédéric Anton at Le Pré Catelan in Paris; and at Le Parc des Eaux Vives in Geneva. He only works with the finest fresh and local ingredients (chestnuts, in particular), creating delicious, accomplished cuisine that skilfully combines the local terroir with spices from around the world." - Michelin Inspector

"This bistro is the more casual sibling of the star Auberge de la Tour, helmed by chef Renaud Darmanin, which is even more reason to stay overnight in the medieval village of Marcolès deep in the Cantal countryside. The dining room takes up the most part of the hotel’s ground-floor and is extended by a terrace overlooking the street. Regional produce takes the limelight in well-crafted recipes, including veg from the cottage garden and other local ingredients such as volcano trout, poultry from the next-door farm, Auvergne cheeses. Examples of dishes: trout, vegetables, garden leaves and a knockout stock of fishbones or the melt-in-the-mouth vanilla and apricot millefeuille." - Michelin Inspector

We decided to stay at the Auberge de la Tour for 2 nights to celebrate my wife's birthday, also to break our long journey back to the UK. This proved to be a great decision. All the staff went the extra mile to make us feel welcome and the level of service is exceptional. Our room was comfortable, quiet and spotless and the hotel also has super-fast broadband which made connecting with my business easy. The best is however the really excellent restaurant and menu. We had a memorable, beautifully prepared and presented supper aided by a lovely sommelier and super service. All in all a great experience and we shall certainly come back to this well hidden gem in a lovely rural region of Cantal.

Marcoles is pretty much in the middle of nowhere. It took ages to drive here from the main roads but we were glad we did. We had a warm welcome. The rooms were individual and interesting. Dinner in the Michelin-awarded restaurant was first class. Breakfast was a little chaotic, perhaps because we were the last guests to have it that morning. Marcoles is a historic, if very quiet village, well worth a wander. We enjoyed our stay very much.

We visited for lunch a couple of days ago. A great experience. The food is excellent and very creative. A true feast for the pallette. Impressive wine list supported by the fine Sommelier. Chef and waiters very professional yet friendly. Overall highly recommended and a sure stop next time we're in the area.

For the food lover, this hotel is all the choice in this area. Innovative menu that offers great taste experiences. Well worth its star in the Michelin Guide. During the five dinners we ate during our stay, the chef kept track of exactly what we ate so we never went on the same dishes, even though we ate eight and ten-course menus. Well Done!||||The staff did everything to make us feel good and comfortable in a caring way. Many thanks!||||Modern spacious rooms make the stay comfortable.||||Auberge de la Tour is highly recommended!

Somewhat surprised at the sparseness of the room that certainly did not match other 5 star hotels that we have stayed at . Comfortable furniture not available but the bed was perfect and other appointments to the room including the bathroom and toilet were surprisingly sparse.(we are greatly surprised by toilets that open directly onto an occupied space and completely lack even a rudimentary air extractor system )However ,some qualification may be needed; as this was primarily a handicapped accessible room. The fact remains that those confined to a wheelchair are entitled to significant luxury given the classification and the price. The restaurant was justifiably a Michelin one star Restarant and service superb.

We decided to escape for a gastronomic weekend to a part of France about which we knew little. As luck would have it the weather was exceptional, so the views, breathtaking as a consequence, though the Cantal is a long way from Paris. The auberge de la tour is situated in the middle of a quaint, quiet Auvergnat village surrounded by cows and forests. Reservation was easy by telephone, with a welcoming voice, and the description of the establishment in its website was utterly accurate. The renovations were nearly finished and the rooms are comfortable and tastefully decorated, with a particular mention for the comfort of the beds. The only negative point was the lack of a shower in our room, where a jacuzzi was installed. A jacuzzi is nice but less so if one wants to refresh before dinner. We opted for the 8 course tasting menu the first night, which met all expectations of a Michelin started restaurant. Our wine was well selected by the attentive sommelier. The second night, we were not hungry, as we had been invited for lunch, but nevertheless the chef/owner made us a special soup. This was a lovely touch as I can only imagine how busy the kitchen becomes on a Saturday evening. Breakfasts were simple but delicious and comprised a selection of local products. The bread served at breakfast and in the evening was to die for! The best surprise as we left was the bill - outstanding value for the quality of cooking and comfort offered. Go there before it becomes too popular!
