"For me Le Lion D’or (1976–1997) stood out as a pivotal restaurant where chef Jean‑Pierre Goyenvalle not only cooked but generously shared his sources for local products and was accessible as a mentor to young chefs like Jeff Buben." - Eater Staff

"At Le Lion d'Or, the chef works his magic with produce sourced in Normandy that he embellishes with Asian flavours. An unexpected culinary marriage inspired by his travels in Asia, particularly Japan and Thailand. Add to this, flawless culinary technique and seasoning and you will be roaring with pleasure!" - Michelin Inspector

This hotel was well priced for such a nice place. We went in the off season, but the hotel and town was still bustling. The hotel itself is located off the main road, which is full of restaurants and bakeries. The cathedral was about a 5 to 10 minute walk, which was great. This hotel was comfortable, with a walk in shower in the bathroom. We did have to walk up stairs to get to the room so if stairs are an issue, call ahead and see if they can accommodate you. We did not eat at the restaurant in the hotel but it is highly rated for those who like fancy food. There is also a nice sitting room with a bar as you first walk in. Very comfortable for our stay in Bayeux. We would definitely stay here again!

We stayed 2 nights at Le Lion d’Or as we kicked off a 2 week trip through France & Italy. Bayeux was the perfect home base for checking out the D-Day beaches and museums - if you’re looking for a great guided tour, check out Bayeux Shuttle! The hotel itself is gorgeous - very clean with great amenities. Our room and our bed were perfect and very comfortable after traveling/being awake for 30 hours. The breakfast is delicious and the dinner at La Table du Lion was incredible - we are still talking about their desserts! The entire staff was friendly and helpful. Make sure you try out the Calvados which is a specialty drink in the Normandy area and is offered at the bar. The cider is also fantastic. The Bayeux area is beautiful and easily navigable. We would love to come back someday to explore the Normandy area and would absolutely stay again at Le Lion d’Or. Highly recommend this hotel if you’re looking to travel to the Normandy region!

We loved our stay. Reserve parking ahead of time since parking is limited. The dinner is a MUST!!!! Food and service were excellent! Wine pairing…say yes! Breakfast was very nice with a good assortment of fresh food. Beds are super comfortable, rooms are spacious. Walkable neighborhood.

The oldest hotel in Bayieux! What a lovely stay. I will have very fond memories of this place. The food is great here, the bar is so cool. The photos on the wall in the bar are signed portraits of some very well known people. With our tour guide this place worked well.

The hotel is located in the centre of Bayeux (famous for its tapestry and cathedral, both of which I recommend visiting), and everything can be visited comfortably on foot. The hotel has a reserved parking area for guests which need to be booked in advanced. The parking spaces are a bit tight, but the staff are very helpful if you need to move other cars in order to parl. The staff at reception are very friendly and very helpful with any requests. The hotel is located in a historic building that does not have a lift but the staff will be happy to help with luggage. I had dinner one evening in the hotel restaurant and I must say a very good dinner with great local food. Breakfast is served in the same room, there is a choice of both savoury and sweet food. In my opinion it was ok. The strange thing was the shape of the room: upon entering there is a kind of an aisle of 5-6 meters long with a table with a coffee machine then you arrive in the room, not very large, with two separate beds (as required) and in one corner a small table. The room was not huge but I must say well cleaned and kept. Bathroom a bit small but with shower and fairly new. The hotel was a good base for setting off by car to discover the D-DAY beaches. Recommended for your stay in Bayeux and all the beaches of the D-DAY.

Google
Perfect base to explore Normandy area...the Hotel is filled with history with photos and signatures of so many military leaders and Hollywood stars...yet the rooms are updated and quite comfortable. Restaurant for dinner was not open during our visit unfortunately. The breakfast was extensive although "seeds" for granola/yogurt were not out and decaf coffee was only powdered. It was a lovely visit!

We had a great experience from check in to check out. We were accommodated with an early check in which was great. Our luggage was brought to our room which was helpful since there are no elevators. We did then request a room with a bit of a view as we were in the back. Again our request was met. The room was large with a nice shower, safe, and closet. They offered laundry service which was free for undergarments including socks. We took advantage and our clothes were returned well before the 24 hours they needed. There were croissants and pain du chocolate with flavored water available as well as candies in the lobby. The ambiance was very nice. We had a seamless check out. We would highly recommend!

Google
Restaurant: terrible. Very slow service. Couples came in after us and were served and completed their meals well before us. We were constantly ignored. The wine tasted like smelly socks but they insisted it was good. The veal was overcooked and the sides were not good. My husband left to go to the grocery store while I stayed back to pay the bill. That alone took almost twenty minutes. This restaurant is a waste of time and money and the service is awful. I have never once complained about bad food or service, especially while traveling in a different country, but this experience was bad.

Yelp
Great rep, underwhelming tho. Slow service for one (each course took ages). Food was more odd than good. Oysters not fully severed. Fish covered in what seemed like granola. Nice location and room. Good wine (as usual - France). Weak gin and tonic. Too strong old fashioned with no cherry or orange. No repeat visit for me.

Yelp
They have clearly updated this hotel. The public areas are very pretty and well thought out. We felt that the staff was a bit pushy, when we checked in, about having us make a reservation for both dinner and breakfast. We didn't eat dinner there. We tried breakfast but regretted it. By the time we got there for breakfast, the scrambled eggs and sausages were dried out. It's an average hotel. There are many other hotels in the area. The price was right. So we stayed here. Make sure you reserve a parking spot. There aren't too many.

Yelp
Stayed 2 nights. Acceptable. Good and friendly service. Great location--I walked to the Bayeux Tapestry museum, the D-Day museum, the reporters' monument, the Saturday outdoor market at Place St-Patrice, the British Cemetery, the Cathedral, and many restaurants. Reliable hi-speed Wi-Fi internet connection (maximum of 2 devices at a time per room). Average bed. No elevator. Preserves the WW2-era atmosphere that made it a favorite of Dwight Eisenhower. My room had a slight cumulated odor of past times; initially I opened the window despite the cold. Real keys for the room door that one turns in at reception when going out. When I checked in there was a loud repetitive thumping from the room above me. Initially I feared it might be the hotel's washing machine (though a strange location), but then realized it was the bed creaking at increasing frequency--the sound ended suddenly and was (somewhat sadly) not heard again during my stay. Other than that, I never heard sounds through the walls from other guests. The parking lot was torn up, so--to my disappointment because this was one of the top reasons I chose this hotel--resourcefulness was needed to park my car. Fortunately I was lucky as it was a weekend. On Saturday night I was able to grab one of the 3 non-torn-up interior parking spaces--free. Not possible on Sunday night because construction on the parking lot was resuming Monday, but I was fortunate in quickly finding a spot on the street just outside the driveway. No cost--(as the hotel receptionist let me know) street parking is free on Sunday, until 9am Monday.

Yelp
Clean, so that's good. Updated. Service is non existent. NON-EXISTENT. They do not have bell boys or bartenders. The front desk will sometimes help at the bar. It's a shame because the bar is quite cozy and a nice place to chill. The location is superb and the price is good. The town is super charming.

Yelp
Summary based on 1 two night stay: --good location, near sights, restaurants, and a market --easy to book from US --English spoken --ok, free Wifi --decent rooms, but no aircon --no lift --parking extra --breakfast good early on, but selection limited later. Moderately expensive. Alternatives nearby.

Yelp
It was our first time here. The hotel has a lot of history. Rooms are small, but remodeled and clean. Use your room key to access electric just inside the door. The croissants offered when we arrived were excellent post train ride. The restaurant food here was not bad, it was unique. The staff was excellent. I would for sure come back. Loved walking the streets in this town.

Yelp
This review is for the restaurant only. I do not recommend eating at this hotel restaurant. The food is mediocre at best and the service is the worst I experienced in all of France.

Yelp
For options in Bayuex this Hotel is great. Great location right in the heart of the main street, short walking distance to main city sites and train station. There is no elevator which isn't an issue for me, however some might need it. The room was nice, clean, good view of the courtyard. No a/c which also wasn't an issue we stayed in early May weather was in the 60's August might be different. The "king" bed was just two twins pushed together. The breakfast was a bit over priced for what was offered. Staff was friendly and spoke English which was helpful. Overall I would stay again.

Yelp
Centrally located, charming hotel with wonderful staff. The public rooms are lovely, including a historic lounge filled with autographed photos of famous guests. We stayed at a recently renovated room which had card-access door (the keys described in earlier posts are gone), a pleasant courtyard view and a nice bedroom - small by US standards, but typically-sized for France. The newly remodeled bathroom was spacious but dark (due to green-measures I think). No elevator, but not an issue for us. Good wifi and parking (spaces indicated with signage listing guest name). The staff were terrific.

Yelp
We had an amazing time dining at this restaurant last night. The portions were perfectly sized with amuse bouche between dishes and drink. I cannot say enough about our waiter/sommelier who was enthusiastic, lighthearted and provided us amazing recommendations on wine to pair with our meal.

Yelp
The hotel was very nicely maintained. There is no elevator, so be prepared to carry your luggage up some narrow steps! There was NO air conditioning, but fans (table, not ceiling) in the rooms and the windows opened. However, be aware there are no screens and there are pigeons that I swear were inches from flying in! The staff was very pleasant. If you eat breakfast, you have to tell the front desk so they can charge you. There are no waitresses. It is definitely different from the US, but pleasant once you get used to it!

Yelp
The good: Location The bad: The parking lot is tiny, if you want a space, you have to pay for it. No elevator Hotel smells of whatever they served for dinner each time you walk through the door. No ice available 2 small bath towels and two hand towels were provided, no washcloths. No a/c The bathroom floor is so cold that it feels like you are being stabbed with each step you take. No shower curtain, shower head is about 5 feet high, fine for me, not so much for my other half who is 6'3 They give you actual keys, which you are supposed to turn into the desk each time you leave. If you go out at night, be prepared to be back by 11 or they lock the gates. Room was cute and had bed and breakfast type of feel, but it stunk. It smell like it was full of mildew. Two twin beds pushed together to make a king sized, oh how I love sleeping on the crack. The walls are thin and the floor creaks, we were able to hear the people above us walking around most of the night. The wi-fi is awful. It goes on and off and you have to keep signing back in. The username and passwords are random letters, numbers and characters. Its a pain. The ugly: Lets start with my favorite: Around 1:30 a.m. the fire alarm starts going off. a few minutes later there is a knock at our door, due to no peephole, we open it. There stands a man wearing all black, does not identify himself, but barges into the room to ask if we are smoking. We assure him, we are not. He then says he is going to check the room and goes into our bathroom. He tells us that because someone took a hotel shower, we caused the fire alarm to go off. This makes no sense as it was a 5 minute, lukewarm shower. This situation scared us both, we had no idea who this man was (and still really don't) but for him to barge into our room with no apology was extremely inappropriate. We took a 2 hour day trip to another city, but I wasn't feeling well so we drove the 2 hours back so I could rest. We got up to the room only to find that some type of construction was being done below us. They were using a jack hammer and drills pretty much non-stop. We ended up having to get up and just go wonder around the city as the noise was more than I could handle. And finally, the first night we got there, we were celebrating a birthday. We asked for 4 glasses and ice from the front desk, they wouldn't give us either. We asked for 4 champagne flutes and they didn't want to give them to us unless we bought the champagne from this. Needless to stay, we will never being staying at this place again and would recommend other to stay away!
