The 15 Best Bánh Mì in Los Angeles

"Lokal in Palms is the kind of sleepy sandwich shop that encourages you to stick around, order a coffee, and perhaps eat slowly enough to not spill on yourself. While there are a few different sandwiches and breakfast items on the menu, the place makes clear their speciality is bánh mì. The Old Skool keeps things bright and fresh while still having all the heartiness we’re looking for at 1pm: a bite of squeakiness from the pork loaf, some butteriness from thin slices of ham and head cheese, and some needed moisture from mayo and paté. It’s a balanced sandwich that leaves you satisfied, but light enough to crave another half after you finish. " - nikko duren, arden shore, sylvio martins, brant cox

Google
Stopped into Lokal and boy is this a busy sandwich shop. I had the Italian job sandwich. Really delicious! There is indoor as well as outdoor seating. Real cool music playing. This a fur baby friendly. I enjoyed the decor. Fresh cup of water for customers at the water station. Paula was wonderful and made feel like I was one of their regular customers. I’ll definitely will be back to enjoy the food and atmospheres! So many beautiful healthy plants.

Google
The banh mi and Vietnamese iced coffee were delicious! Service was excellent too! Highly recommend

Google
best banh mi and viet coffee in west la hands down. i come from the 626 where viet food is plentiful and delicious, and viet food is very rare here in west la. but the banh mi, albeit more pricy than youd find in 626 or westminster, is well worth the price. theyre generous with the mayo and pate 🙏🙏🙏🙏 the viet coffee is creamy and strong and the condensed milk comes thru so nicely. highly recommend this place to all my friends missing a good banh mi. :)

Google
Great sandwich place! We got the LOKAL DặC BIệT and Chicken Bahn Mi. Very tasty. This will be our go-to spot in the neighborhood for lunch. Yum!

Google
I love this place! I go to ucla and live down the street and it’s perfect for a quick bite in between going to class. The people who work there are so sweet and I usually have conversations with them every time I come and pick up an order. The Chimichurri steak sandwich is one of my fav sandwiches ever!! Shoutout to all the lovely people working there, I’ll always be a customer :)

Google
Probably the worst bahn mi(the old skool) I’ve had that said it’s not terrible more like a lower average just not as good as any other one I’ve had and the meat portion is pretty stingy. And the drinks really felt like a rip off picture attached came half way full/ half empty and the extra charge for milk sub made it offensive. If you got money to burn the taro is good, the horchata is decent but hard to find good horchata so if you hadn’t had any in a while def hits the spot but didn’t finish it…yes the half cup went unfinished so no bueno. I hate doing bad reviews.

Once upon a time I ordered online and added a pick up to my uber on the way to the airport. It was one of the best decisions in my life.

Google
love their banh mi sandwiches. theres a place next to me thats walking distance but i wont even go there bc this place is way better. My husband orders the Lokal đặc biệt. he got it once w an egg and once without. he says while really good with the egg, it's too messy. I usually order the veggie turkey.

Yelp
Great smallish neighborhood sandwich shop that also serves coffee in the Palms area. There's some limited seating but definitely more geared for takeout. When you come in, you are greeted and served by some great folks as well. Truly a neighborhood gem. Over the years, I've been here a few times. They have some food items and some various sandwiches, but they have a specific sub menu for the sandwiches of my peoples - the banh mi LOL. On my most recent visit, I got the Lokal 'Dac Biet' sandwich. This kind of mixes the classic pate and cold cuts with some grilled pork. A great combination if not 'traditional'. It's an easy walk for people that live close by and the prices are reasonable as well. There's some limited parking in the small lot they're located in. There's street parking in the neighborhood close by, but that might be a little tough from time to time. I'm a fan of this place. It's one of those places where I think to myself - why do I not come here more often?
google avatar

Martín P.

Yelp
Hey Lokal and literally every business that sells food. Your prices are insane. Or are we all insane because we still buy this expensive shit? Why are we ok with this?
google avatar

Jeremy S.

Yelp
Pros -banh mi has good meats -fresh ingredients Cons -extremely overpriced $13 for a sandwich that isn't that big. Just hard to justify that
google avatar

Jono M.

Yelp
Lokal is a 10/10, would recommend. Mind you, I've only had the Grilled Chicken Banh Mi both times but it is one of my absolute favorites I've had in L.A. However, do be aware that this Banh Mi is particularly spicy (they've experimented a little with the recipe which I appreciate), I asked for no spicy ingredients the second time and the friendly staff happily obliged. Seating inside is limited but their open-air patio seating is perfect for a midday hang!!!
google avatar

Nicole M.

Yelp
We ordered catering from their West LA location. This was my first time having anything from their menu. I ordered the Lokal đặc biệt. It was really good! This is not the first time our group has catered from them, the other attendees said they enjoyed multiple items from the menu. Enjoy!

Yelp
Tried this place today for lunch. I had a jungle sandwich. It was fresh and tasty. I'm interested in trying some other options from their menu in the future.

Yelp
Amazing Bahn Mi. I find that half the battle is getting decent soft French bread. This place indeed serves it warm and soft but still maintaining that classic crunchy crust. They had a few styles and flavors to choose from for Bahn Mis. I chose the K-BBQ, but I don't think you could go wrong with any kind. They also serve coffees, pastries and other sandwiches, so there's bound to be something for everyone. Next time I visit, I think I'll try a sandwich.
google avatar

Kyle W.

Yelp
Came for the sandwich, got the sandwich. Look, I came here an hour before closing so MAYBE that has something to do with it, but the ends/butt of the bread were extremely stale. Overall, the pickled daikon and carrots were very good. The KBBQ beef is also tasty, a bit dry. Needed more Mayo. Will be back.
google avatar

Aileen H.

Yelp
This place to me is an absolute winner. The French baguette was crunchy, flaky and fresh! I was happy the second I bite into the crusty baguette. I ordered the Vietnamese old-skool Banh-mi sandwich. It was satisfying in a way that it was exactly like the traditional banh-mi sandwich with cold cuts, pickled vegetables and pâté, cilantro and yes jalapeños! The Vietnamese coffee went perfectly with the sandwich. The lady who took my order was pleasant and friendly. The interior was hippie and casual. I will definitely be coming back!
google avatar

Karen P.

Yelp
Stopped here for a quick breakfast burrito and Vietnamese coffee. There is a small parking lot and street parking but could get crowded if you come during peak times. The Vietnamese coffee was delicious and flavorful. Sweet, creamy, and had the distinct strong Vietnamese flavor. The breakfast burrito was a little smaller than I expected but priced well for only about $10! It was barely warm, more like room temp. So I'm not sure if it was made fresh on the grill, the cheese wasn't melted. Altogether, pretty pleased with my visit. I will come back and I want to try their banh mi sandwiches next!
google avatar

Fortuna N.

Yelp
This Vietnamese sandwich (Banh mi) place hits the spot for being on the west side and not having to drive all the way out to OC or Garden Grove for the good good. They use crispy French baguettes and the meat selection is great/super tasty too! The only thing I wish they provided here is pate on their Banh mis. It would be cool even if they provide pate as an add-on for an additional cost so customers can pay for the completed traditional taste #iykyk (or else I have to go to OC LOL). The drinks and coffee here are pretty decent too!
google avatar

Kody V.

Yelp
Decent sandwich , nothing special, nothing really stood out from this experience, one and done.
google avatar

Gillian A.

Yelp
Hmm, 3-ish stars rounded up. The things that I tried here were just okay. Friendly staff though. --------------- Vietnamese iced coffee: had some of the toasted taste that I like in Vietnamese iced coffee, but none of the flavor nuances. Not remarkably strong either. BBQ pork banh mi: tender and tasty bbq pork pieces but the baguette had a rather tough chew to it. Slightly too heavy on the mayo as well. Peanut butter cookie: deliciously chewy but could've had a bolder peanut butter flavor. --------------- Ambiance-wise I can see why this cafe is a staple to people living in the neighborhood. Chill environment and I dig the decor here. Staff are pretty sociable. Overall not sure if it's worth the drive heading here though.

Yelp
I usually order online, and their Vietnamese coffee is exceptional. The chimichurri steak sandwich is absolutely fantastic too! Last week, I visited the store and tried the Banh mi sandwich and watermelon smoothie--both were delightful! What I appreciate most is their reasonable pricing, especially for this area. This cafe has become my favorite spot!

C R.

Yelp
This is our favorite banh mi place in the westside. I usually order the dac biet banh mi and my husband orders the lemongrass tofu banh mi with egg - consistently good through the years. The staff are always friendly and helpful. Prices are higher than San Gabriel or Westminster in the OC, but this is the westside and everything costs more in this part of town.
google avatar

Rachel N.

Yelp
3.5/5 but I'm rounding up. I'm Vietnamese & from Orange County (i.e. the largest Vietnamese enclave in the US). This place is not authentic by any means and is more than double the price of what I pay in OC for a Banh Mi (it's usually $6 in Garden Grove/Westminster), but it does satisfy my Banh Mi cravings on the West Side. The pickled carrot & radish are great, as well as the freshness of the cilantro & jalapeños. The protein (I got tofu) is ok, not delicious but good enough & they give a lot. However, the baguette is dry & hard -- not like the traditional Vietnamese baguette which is fluffy, warm, crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. The baguette is probably the most essential part of Banh Mi, so this was disappointing but understandable as I don't expect a restaurant like this to make their own baguettes like THH or Lee's. On the other hand, I live right around the corner, so this place is perfect for a quick lunch if you're craving Banh Mi. Overall, I'm happy to say that Vietnamese food is becoming more popular in LA and am happy that I live next to a sandwich shop that specializes in Banh Mi, as the restaurant is cute & seems to be quite popular among a diverse range of people.
google avatar

Cameron K.

Yelp
Solid sandwich spot with great bread! I got the lemongrass tofu banh mi. Great quality of ingredients but I just wish the tofu was marinated/seasoned a bit more (had a more lemongrass flavor) and daikon and carrots had a stronger pickled flavor. Otherwise, overall, the food was pretty good if you are looking for a close-by banh mi spot with amazing bread. workers, cute little seating area inside and outside, and free parking.
google avatar

Hien M.

Yelp
The BBQ Pork Banh Mi, KBBQ, Breakfast Banh Mi, Lemongrass Tofu, and Cubano are all so so so good and so reasonably priced. The bread is soft and crispy, the meat's perfectly cooked. Everything's super well balanced. There are a variety of sandwiches from breakfast sandwiches to different types of banh mi. I settled for the KBBQ banh mi and it was pretty good! The bread on the inside is soft and firm and crispy on the outside. The kbbq meat itself was tasty as well! In general this is a pretty nice and cozy breakfast spot where you can get some work done and enjoy some nice food! Service is great!

Yelp
You wouldn't expect much from this little hole-in-the-wall sandwich shop, but Lokal is a great option for banh mi in west LA! Came here for lunch on a Monday afternoon with my boyfriend and my pup. We ordered our food and drinks at the counter before seating ourselves. The restaurant has a hipster vibe with about 5-6 tables inside. There are several benches outside for folks to enjoy their meals on a nice day. The staff were friendly and we got our food quickly. Lokal dac biet banh mi (5/5) - Loved this one. French baguette is light and fluffy on the inside, but crispy on the outside. It's definitely not your traditional dac biet banh mi, but the additions of pork floss, char siu, and fried onions gave it a refreshing kick. Lots of meat overflowing from the sandwich. Grilled chicken banh mi (4/5) - Again, the bread was great. Chicken was tasty but there was an overwhelming flavor of sriracha mayo. Not sure if that was the intent but was expecting something else. Overall, great lunch spot and would come again! PS. There are milk bones for your pups by the self-serve station (napkins, straws, etc.)
google avatar

Vance M.

Yelp
Our Bahn Mi sandwiches were awesome. I got the Al Pastor and my wife got the classic.
google avatar

Kathy Z.

Yelp
I usually get the Old Skool Banh Mi (with no head cheese--please make this an option to remove on Postmates!) or the Chicken Banh Mi and a cup of Vietnamese Iced Coffee to wash it down. The baguette is always perfectly crispy--even if you leave it out for a couple of hours it's still crispy! However, I do have to say that inflation sizing is happening and I can usually finish a whole Banh Mi in one go instead of portioning it out for two meals like before. Nonetheless, add this restaurant to your list if you're looking to eat authentic Banh Mis on the Westside.
google avatar

Jordon C.

Yelp
A band of savory ingredients in one of the most interesting and flavor forward breakfast burritos known to man! I ordered the spicy chicken burrito and the meat was tender and juicy - it was cuddled up with crispy hash browns and danced with the tastiest grilled onions I've ever had the pleasure of eating. So much to compliment, but I'll leave it at being "perfect".
google avatar

Yelp
Ordered a Korean Banh Mi BBQ sandwich. Was not only the best Korean Banh Mi Sandwich ever but one of the top Banh Mi Sandwiches I'm had in my life.
google avatar

Clarissa H.

Yelp
Found this place for lunch. Ordered the original sandwich and a tea milk boba. Walked in and was immediately greeted, everyone is friendly. The place is very clean and presentation looks good! Good overall was good, the sandwich just a tad bit dry for my liking but next time I'll ask for more mayo. I will def be back!

Yelp
AMBIENCE: (4/5) - Cozy place that gives it a whole in a wall vibe but with a hipster twist - A few tables off to the side and a few more benches for outside seating but other than that not much seating. However, the sandwiches are still worth to-go! SERVICE: (5/5) - Greeted with a smile right away at the front & the sandwich was made so quick even though it was busy FOOD/DRINKS: (5/5) - Old Skool Bahn Mi = so so good. When they handed me my order it was so warm and made me so excited for it already. The bread is toasted to perfection on both sides. The meat is fresh & the meat to pickled veggies ratio is perfection. The veggies are pickled to the right level to bring that brightness to the sandwich and lift it all up. The jalapenos in there were perfect that it just gave just a bit of a kick that it needed at the end of each bite. The sandwich was so big too, such a good deal! OVERVIEW: (4.5/5) - Would definitely come back again. For $9 the bahn mi was not just a good size stuffed with filling but also the ingredients were so fresh!

Olivia I.

Yelp
My roommates and I order Lokal more than any other takeout. Croissant breakfast sandwich with bacon and avocado will change ur life. Steak sandwich and the Cuban are also perfect 12/10
google avatar

JaeMin K.

Yelp
This place is seriously amazing. Prices, quality, ambience are all 5/5. I tried two of their locations, and both locations (one on National and the other in Lincoln) are great. I personally prefer the Lincoln place because the inside is brighter and more open. They have a generous selection of vegan/vegetarian options. I've tried the impossible burger, albacore tuna sandwich, mushroom chimmi, and the cauliflower chimmi. Their breads are delicious and perfectly toasted. The combination of the ingredients and condiments come together beautifully. Definitely coming back to try all of their vegetarian options!
google avatar

Urban I.

Yelp
A favorite spot, as they have such an awesome breakfast bahn mi and vietnamese iced coffee. Sandwich bread always on point, with flavorful ingredients. Service is super friendly. Note that they can be backed up with orders at times, but please be patient with them. Another thing is that parking can frequently be an issue in the area, but definitely worth stopping if you haven't gone.
google avatar

Lydia C.

Yelp
Local Sandwich a shop is a cute, local cafe that happens to serve decent bánh mì and other food items. The place is small and cozy, giving off the atmosphere of a local coffee shop more than anything else. The service was also friendly and helpful. Recently, I was in the area and wanted to grab a quick bite to eat in the morning, so I dropped by and got some bánh mì. The sandwiches are good, but not anything mind blowing. I got the Old Skool and it was typical cold cut bánh mì with the pâté, carrots, daikon, etc. That being said, I would definitely not trek all the way out there for just the bánh mì, but I would consider dropping by if I was in the area again.
google avatar

Starry S.

Yelp
I've been to both locations of the Lokal Sandwich Shop and they're both amazing every time! I've mainly had their banh mi's, and I enjoy it more and more each visit. Their baguettes are phenomenal and their pork pate is so*** delicious. I've had many banh mi's in my life but it's safe to say that Lokal is my favorite spot. Their food is packed w/ flavor, they have great options for drinks, and the employees are always so kind-- even when they're jam packed busy! I appreciate this spot whole heartedly. My favorite breakfast sandwich in LA is the Banh Mi Breakfast from Lokal. It's a perfect balance of fresh ingredients and indulging, I always feel good afterwards.
google avatar

Yelp
I should have been able to give this place a raving five stars. We had three of the best sandwiches ever. My daughter's Korean BBQ Bahn Mi was amazing. Highly recommend. My husband's TBLT was absolutely delicious. Perfectly seasoned and moist. And my steak chimichurry was really good. We're definitely fans. Unfortunately I also ordered the clam chowder and it was legit the worst I have ever had. The potatoes were undercooked/still crunchy. The cream had curdled in a way that looked gross. And there were almost no actual clams in it. My husband and I both found it to be not worth eating, but our teenage daughter did eat it, but I felt bad feeding it to her! But the sandwiches, yum!!! Drop the soup from your menu and just own your sandwich mastery!
google avatar

Vickie S.

Yelp
Grilled chicken banh mi delicious - crisp, spicy, savory on crunchy outside soft inside baguette. Robust Vietnamese coffee that doesn't taste watered down. Genuinely joyful staff. Colorful chill space. I'll be back when I have to study or grade papers.
google avatar

Doreen M.

Yelp
Excellent service. Stopped in just to look at the menu, and ended up trying their mango smoothie. I asked what was in it - frozen mango, water, and sugar. Because I am so used to Robek's mango smoothie which has yogurt, papaya juice, sherbert, etc this one was fairly bland to me. I will def try some sandwiches or baked goods here another time though.

Nathaniel R.

Yelp
Great food! This is my go to lunch spot when I don't have food at home. Really great to take friends to when they come into town too for a quick bite back from the airport. Service is always fast and easy. It's a really simple place.
google avatar

Tristan N.

Yelp
This was a delicious banh mi, and a delicious extra topping (scrambled eggs), but the assembly really didn't make sense to me (see picture)... Why was the scrambled egg wrapped around the bread instead of inside the sandwich? Was it by design? Surely not - it was impossible to eat cleanly. It didn't even look like the omelette fell out of the bread, seemed like the bread was assembled, then the chef forgot until the very end to add the egg, so just slapped it on top of the bread... In any case, it was delicious, so 4 stars.
google avatar

Jenny L.

Yelp
Tried the 'Old Skool' and 'Al Pastor' banh mi. Both were delicious and flavorful, especially after adding Siracusa sauce. The bread was thick, fresh, and hearty. The ingredients of daikon, carrots, cilantro, meats, cucumbers were generous. You definitely get your moneys worth. They also have a vegan menu. The staff is friendly, courteous and they look like they run a tight ship. The parking is a bit tough since it is a small lot but there is street parking. Just don't go on a Thursday morning since most of the meters are off limits due to street sweeping.
google avatar

Yelp
Lokal is a fast casual, self serve restaurant with rustic decor. Upon entering, we were greeted by a worker that pointed us to the menu. I ordered the grilled chicken banh mi and my girlfriend got the dac biet. Grilled Chicken: 3/5 The buns were toasted to perfection but the rest of the banh mi fell short. There were a lot of pickled vegetables but barely any chicken. Also, too much mayo making it taste heavy. Dac Biet: 4.5/5 This was way better. Solid meat to veggie ratio without excessive sauce, and overall a more substantial sandwich (it did cost $3 more though). It was interesting having pork floss and bbq pork in a banh mi, but it worked surprisingly well. Only downside was they forgot the fried onions. Bumme. Hope to come back one of these days to try their kbbq and al pastor banh mi. It's not often you find restaurants that offer an interesting twist on banh mis. PS check in on Yelp for $1 off their cold brew; it's nice and smooth.
google avatar

Daph H.

Yelp
I went here a few years ago and was unimpressed. However, I kept seeing good reviews and decided to give it another chance. I'm glad I did! I placed my takeout order online and it was ready on time. The Old Skool Banh Mi was $9.95, expensive by banh mi standards, but cheap by Westside sandwich standards. I was happy to see that the sandwich was as long as my forearm! My previous visit had very little meat, but this time there were cold cuts that covered the entire length of the baguette and a smear of pork pate, along with pickled carrots and daikon, cilantro, jalapeños and mayo on a crusty baguette. My husband for the Lemongrass Tofu and was happy with his choice as well. Can't wait to go back and try more sandwiches! The parking lot can get a little crowded at times, but there's usually street parking in the neighborhood.
google avatar

Hanna K.

Yelp
Random find for lunch that panned out really well -- we ordered the BBQ pork and K-BBQ banh mis. Super easy pick up and I highly recommend the BBQ pork banh mi. Will be back to explore the other items on their menu!
google avatar

Sunny B.

Yelp
The sandwiches pretty good, but the bread is a little hard I like my bread soft. I will mention it next time but the bacon and the turkey and cheese was all very generous and the bread was good. Plus they were fast and nice. You can sit outside if their benches inside is nice as well.

Ivy T.

Yelp
the banh mi and the viet iced coffee was all i got and i am not disappointed at all!!!!!! i grew up in the 626 where banh mi was abundant but man this really really impressed me. slightly more pricy for a banh mi, but u rly get what ur paying for. the pate wass sooooo goooooddddddd. and they were so nice too!!!! u can tell they care abt their customers. GREAT lunch spot, super chill and laid back.
google avatar

Tranee N.

Yelp
The sandwiches are great! Convenient when you're on the go. I love the banh mi sandwiches
google avatar

Brian L.

Yelp
Delicious Vietnamese coffee. Old Skool banh mi and chipotle chicken were both solid sandwiches as well. Friendly staff!
google avatar

Sherwin B.

Yelp
Got their BBQ Pork bahn mi. It comes with cucumber, jalapeño, Mayo, house made pickled daikon and carrots and cilantro on a baguette. It also comes with pork patte but opted to take that out. Their baguette was pretty good. Not too crunchy. They were pretty generous with the meat and veggies. Sandwich wasn't bad. I'm going to go back and try their other bahn mi's. I also got their cold brew jasmine green tea for checking in. Not sweet at all. Sunny took my order and was very friendly. Good local sandwich shop and will go back again.

Yelp
Happened to stumble upon this spot while working in the area. Way little location owners are awesome and their sandwiches are pretty good. I happen to get the lokal. I forgot what ingredients it had in it, but it was very good. The meat to bread ratio was good. Bread tasted delicious. The only gripe I would have is it I wish that the meet would be a little more favorable and a smidge more moist. I believe the prices for the sandwiches were just, although I will have to say that I believe their cold coffee was priced a bit high. I know it's the going rate for cold brew coffee, but five bucks seems a little extreme for less than 16 ounce pour. With that being said it's still was a great cold brew coffee, I just won't pay five dollars again for it personally. If you're ever in the area, drop on by, you won't be disappointed.

Yelp
I stumbled upon this place because the cafe across my place closed down, and have gone back multiple times. I've tried their grilled chicken bahn mi and the breakfast one, and by my favorite is the breakfast bahn mi. It was more reminiscent of your traditional bahn mi with an egg, whereas the chicken sounded great but I couldn't taste the garlic sambal. The menu is overall reasonably priced given west LA. Drink wise, I've had their vietnamese coffee, coffee avocado smoothie, as well as just their regular coffees. The vietnamese coffee was perhaps a tad too sweet, but overall still good. The avocado coffee could use a bit more flavoring. Service wise, the food seems to come out relatively quick. The various cashiers I've had were all friendly. Ambiance wise, there was decent seating both indoors and outdoors, and is a good place to do some work if needed/meet friends for coffee as I notice they have wifi, but the music can be a bit loud

Yelp
Love this place been coming here since it was a market, but when I get extra egg in my protein sandwich it's a it or miss. I get it half the time. If they were on it this place would be a 5 star spot. Also they burnt the sh!t outta my croissant lol.
google avatar

Lauren L.

Yelp
I got the KBBQ Banh Mi sandwich and it was fantastic. The bread was crispy and the vegetables were tart and fresh. Highly recommend. 5 stars for the Banh Mi Sandwich. Unfortunately if you are gluten free, they will only make their regular sandwiches with the gluten free bread. We were hoping to get a gluten free banh mi sandwich for my boyfriend who is gluten intolerant. He has never had a banh mi in his life and was excited to try it with the gluten free bread. (I know it goes against the traditional making of it since the baguette is the important part, but how else is he going to try it?) Sadly, the kitchen staff refused to make the banh mi on gluten free bread, absolutely no idea why, so he was not able to try it and ordered a regular sandwich instead. The cashier was very sweet and did his best to accommodate our order, even going back to the kitchen to ask several times if they could make it for us gluten free anyways. The effort was much appreciated.

Yelp
Great Vietnamese coffee and crunchy bread in the Banh Mi! I wish the breakfast sandwiches had hash browns, I think that would make this an every week place for me.
