The Best Cheap Meals In Mexico City

"Quesadillas Maria Isabel has been around since 1967, well before luxury boutiques and high-end art galleries took over the pricey Polanco neighborhood. The quesadillas here are prepared by folding raw corn tortillas in half, filling them with ingredients like cheese and chicharrón, and frying them. Go with one potato and one traditional cheese, which are just $2 each and served with a heaping side of sour cream and homemade green salsa. You’re not eating here for the vibes (there’s no music, the chairs are plastic), and it’s cash only, so come with a few pesos in your pocket." - guillaume guevara

"Pretty much every single dish at this old-school luncheonette is fried, and so incredibly worth it. The main highlight are their quesadillas (pockets of fried masa filled with cheese and a choice of potato, chorizo, spicy rajas, etc.) which are served sizzling on plastic plates. After one or two of these babies and their famous flan after, an Alka-Seltzer comes in handy, as does a long walk—a treat in this beautiful old neighborhood dotted with boutiques, bars, and cafes."

Skip, not worth it. Gave me old school cafeteria vibes. However the chairs were not that comfortable and service was okay. Not sure why it got high reviews. Anyway, I thought the quesadillas were okay, but small portions. A quesadilla had rajas and the other calabas, but I was unable to taste the difference. The cheese overwhelmed the other flavors. I was still hungry so I ordered a sope with chorizo, which was okay. However I thought it was too thin and prefer the masa not fried. The agua de Jamaica was also watered down. Overall, I paid about 200mxp and thought it was overpriced for the quality of food. Removing this place from my CDMX list and suggest you keep it moving.

Google
TLDR: 3.5 stars for price and some items were very good I really loved the carne and the flor de calabasa con queso. The chorizo y potato was very bland and the sopes were just ok. The nopal had no flavor but the oaxacan cheese had a nice flavor to it. All in all, good local spot for the price but some hits and misses on the items

Google
Very limited menu and everything served very plainly. Salsas weren't great. Not only was the food average they then tried to overcharge us, maybe because we were obviously gringos. Many better options close by.

Google
This was so good. Only reason I put four stars for service is because I asked what drinks they have and he said only coke and water when later I noticed people having agua frescas. Good was so good and salsa is delicious. I got 5 quesadillas, a flauta, coke, and agua Fresca.

The food was amazing! We tried returning but it was Mother’s Day weekend so I’m sure the hours were affected. Highly recommend.

Google
It used te be really good, used to be the best quesadillas in town, will not go again. The cheese tastes like plastic, the cream tastes and looks like it's extremely watered-down. Really disappointed with the quality decline. Prices are very high, about 60 pesos for a cheese quesadilla and 50 pesos for terrible water.

Google
This was a recommendation from a friend, the quesadillas are pretty good but not delicious as we expected. We have tried in another places much better. This place needs a little bit to be update- renovate, totally understandable their old style but needs some work. Prices are average +

Google
Lovely traditional food and friendly, helpful staff. Nice bit of authenticity in the Polanco hotel central. They did have a laminated menu with English translations if you ask. For foreigners if it’s your first time in Mexico, would recommend trying both the traditional drinks pictured. For vegans; I had the mushroom and potato quesadilla.

Yelp
Friends took us here as their go-to spot for quesadillas and we were not disappointed. These aren't like a typical American quesadilla, they are like tortilla pockets filled with deliciousness and then sealed around the edges. Soooo good!! I don't think you could wrong with any of the options. Our favorites were the frijoles con queso (beans and cheese), papas con queso (potatoes and cheese) and the papas con chorizo (potatoes with chorizo). We ate inside and salsas and crema are on the tables. You order by checking off how many of each item you would like on a paper list and then hand that to the server. Highly recommend!!

Yelp
no frills restaurant known for a simple and small variety of mexican comfort food that's probably been around polanco forever, even before the neighborhoods development into one of the more swankier ones in cdmx. i wanted a simple light meal before a larger dinner and walked there and opted for a couple of quesadillas (if you're a gringo like me, then they resemble empanadas more than the flat flour quesadillas we might find in the states). you fill out your selections on the paper menu, and the food comes out pretty quickly. at the end, they ring you up, and you're done. unfortunately, they had run out of the carne quesadillas, so i ordered a ham and cheese and mushroom quesadilla. both were deliciously and oozily cheesy. i would have ordered a few more had i not had to make an early dinner. the salsa verde was so fresh and delicious, almost like a chimichurri, and the fresh cream was also a good complement. perfect comfort food. if i'm staying in the area or need a quick snack, i'll definitely come back.

Yelp
Great place and friendly people. Kept finding myself here on my trip to MDMX. Very casual. Seemed to be a very local spot.

Yelp
Tostadas...Check Sopes...Check Flautas...Check Quesadillas...Check Did I order almost everything off the menu. Check Check. I could not be happier with Maria Isabel for breakfast. Great food. All the dishes were fantastic. Just can't go wrong. If I had to pick that is a must get...that would be the Quesadillas. You will not regret getting it. It is that good. You will guarantee leave here not noticing that you barely took any pesos out of your wallet. Great Mexican food.

Yelp
This is the typical Mexican restaurant that you will find in any neighborhood in Mexico. Serving sopes, quesadillas, fried tacos (flautas), soups and lunches all day. It has an extensive menu with chicken, pork, beef and chorizo as the main offerings in sopes, flautas and quesadillas. Also pork rines (chicharron) which I won't recommend the way they serve it. For the vegetarians they have flower pumpkins, mushrooms and other Mexican varieties of vegetables served in Loncherias. Best of all is that it is inexpensive like all of this type of restaurants :)

Yelp
This seemed to us to be a good place to get every-day Mexican city food. We had Mexico City style sopas and quesadillas (similar to empanadas from our perspective.) We weren't a big fan of the standard drinks we saw them give to us and most tables. Pretty quick and very cheap.

Yelp
By far the best "quesadillas". I have been a client for 35 years. The flavor is consistently the same that I remember when I was a child. It is an experience. My favorites are: chicharrón seco, frijol con queso y el sope de carne. With a glass of Jamaica water. Enjoy!

Yelp
Good fried quesadillas, flautas, sopes and other antojitos. They are served with green salsa and heavy cream.
