The Best New Restaurants and Food Carts in Portland, March 2025

"For too long, the brisket trimmings at celebrated barbecue joint Podnah’s Pit were gong to waste. Then the team headed by owner Rodney Muirhead decided to turn them into burgers. The resulting pop-up was popular enough that now Lone Star is a brick-and-mortar restaurant in the former La Taq space next to Podnah’s. Expect a simple menu of burgs and hot dogs and things of that nature, plus some cocktails (they’ve kept the La Taq bar)." - Paolo Bicchieri

Great burgers and friendly service. Onion rings were great also. Quiet pleasant atmosphere. A favorite.

Solid cheeseburger and great fries. The burger had a lot of flavor and good char. The fries were crispy and salted perfectly.

I love this place Aves Rosie is the best bartender ever! My new spot, onion rings are amazing and the burgers are better! 7oz High life bottles for 2$ and the country western music makes this place!

We decided to come here to check out the food. We ordered the green chile burger, Bleu cheeseburger, and their hit dog special. The quality of meat on the burgers were great and super tasty. The size of the burgers were also of good size. The hot dog was also pretty good to try out. I would come here again.

Super chill vibe, awesome bartender and locals at the bar. My kid sent me this place because he was curious and he lives out of state! I had the best coney dog in a long time! Coney sauce was perfect, no weird flavor or odd spice like other places in Portland. Perfect use of yellow mustard on the dog and the burger. I had to write this because it's the best burger I've had since my home in AK at Club Paris, phenomenal flavor and perfect temp! Thank you...oh, and shoestring fries too! Should have added the rootbeer float to dip my fries in..dammit. The praline candy topped it off! Delicious!!

Google
Thank you for a great experience. The cocktails, burgers and onion rings were great. The bartender was friendly and helpful.

The burger we had was good, but not superlative in any way. The patty was very under-seasoned, and the format is not my favorite - more of a steakhouse burger...which is fine if that’s what you like. I’m curious what a 1/4# patty on the same setup would be like, or better yet two 1/4# patties, instead of one 1/2# patty…also the small side of fries is seriously small.

My Texan husband and I were out looking for true Tex Mex. We heard this place was as close as we were going to get (in Portland anyway). The service was very quick and friendly. We ordered the chips with queso, guacamole and salsa. This was amazing! Definitely Tex Mex! The house margaritas are delicious! Just the right amount of all ingredients! We ordered the brisket puffy taco. It was rich and very filling. The meat was tender and flavorful. We also ordered the ‘Gringo’ taco which was definitely Tex Mex, too. Especially when you dip it in the queso! Kudos to La Taq- your food is Tex Mex and delicious!

Yelp
Biked here a week or so ago. I was surprised it was empty, esp. after the Oregonian praised the place, after my first visit. The burger was just as good or better than my first visit. Very juicy (dripping) AND medium rate (even though I forgot to request that). They also had stone ground mustard. IF you like a thick burger this seems to be the place now.

Yelp
My husband and I really liked Podnah's BBQ next store, and learned the same guy also owns this burger place so came back to try it. It was very busy when we arrived. It's counter service and we struggled to find a table after ordering. Tables weren't clearing because no one had their food. It took over an hour to get two burgers with fries! The burger was just ok. It wasn't hot, the fries were basic and weren't fresh. The bun was good but made the burger overall kind of dry. Definitely NOT worth an hour or more wait. The server didn't even apologize for the long wait when we finally got our food.

Yelp
The restaurant is in a great location. Plenty of street parking and there's ice cream and other places nearby for an after dinner treat. The layout of the restaurant is cluttered, the bar is very big and tables are cramped around it. There are a few tables outside, which was more comfortable so we chose that option. Service was friendly and the food came out at a reasonable time. We ordered the cheeseburger and had high hopes, but it fell flat. The bun to meat ratio is off, there's way too much bread. Also, the buns were dry. The meat was overcooked and wasn't very flavorful. With the abundance of amazing restaurants in Portland, this won't be one I'm looking forward to eating at again; though it's t would probably be good if you want to drink.

Yelp
Sooooo good. The service was great, and the quality of the ingredients seems very high. Everything from hot dogs to burgers to fries was fresh and delicious. I will definitely come back. Clean and tidy place.

Yelp
The burger was super delicious! Obviously couldn't wait to eat it. The basket of fries was the perfect size. It was shared between 3 people and a toddler. The service was great and the ambiance super chill. Will definitely be coming back for another burger.

Yelp
Overall, not a good first time visit.. my friend and I got burgers and mine was fairly undercooked and hers was way over cooked. The meat itself was just ok, could have used a little more seasoning. The bun was dry and her burger seemed like it barely had any cheese on it. The onion rings were ok, the sauce it comes with was meh but the mustard aioli was pretty decent. Didn't try any drinks. Service was just ok, seemed kind of weird/off for some reason, like she was mentally somewhere else. But overall, we both agreed we sadly wouldn't return. I had been wanting to try the bbq spot thats also owned by the same person but after the burger experience I'm not sure I want to.

Yelp
Boy that burger was so tasty it'd make a crocodile crawl out of the water for a bite. Cozy, rustic looking bar with front patio, real chill. Great service, they aim to please. A+.

Yelp
Food was decent. Had the green chile burger and it had a little heat to it. Meat was cooked right and the bun was soft. Also order the onion rings and the special hotdog for the Weiner Week promotion going on. Only one thing I would've preferred on the burger which is sliced onions. My burger has chopped onions which made it hard to eat without a lot of the onions falling off of the burger. Overall a pleasant experience. The space isn't too big but it wasn't too crowded when I arrived. You also have to order at the bar and they give you a number where you take it to your seat. Would like to come back and try their cocktails. Also the place was next door to Podnah's and few doors down from Nick's ice cream place. Since the space is small, we missed it the first time for some reason. Wasn't paying attention as it was part of a strip of restaurants in that block including Hat Yai.

Yelp
Had the bacon cheeseburger which had some of the best bacon on it. Service was friendly and food came out pretty quickly (just a couple other orders when I was there for a late lunch). Prices seemed reasonable compared to other burger places. Burger wasn't greasy and could get clean bites with the bacon breaking nicely but not overcooked or salty. The main issue was the burger tasted watery so didn't get much flavor of the meat itself or toppings (minus the bacon and cheese) which could be caused by a few things. Would be willing to give another shot though.

Yelp
Let me start by saying I will really really miss La Taq... BUT GOSH DARN! Lone Star Burger knows what they're doing! My boyfriend and I went during lunch on a weekday so it wasn't super crowded and we were able to sit down right away. We ended up ordering the hatch chile burger, coney dog, and onion rings to share. The burger was so juicy and flavorful that I'm still thinking about it! And don't get me wrong, I love a smashburger... but they've been popping up everywhere. It's so nice to have a new spot that has a thick patty! And the red onions are my fav. Not a lot of places do red onions but for a burger, they're delicious. And the onion rings? I promise you. Best in town.

Yelp
Ground BRISKET, SIRLOIN, and CHUCK burgers!! Need I say more? The cooked to perfection Green Chile Cheeseburger is drip-down-your-chin-and-hands juicy and full of flavor. The onion rings and shoestring fries are crisp and tasty. Make sure to order the chocolate chip and pecan cookie for dessert. If you're too full, take a couple home for later - you won't regret it.

Yelp
Just here for the burgers, not the bar. Ordered the special: 1/4 pound cheeseburger, fries, and a drink. Nothing particularly wrong with the burger, but nothing particularly good about it either. Unseasoned meat, a bit dwarfed by the bun, and very pedestrian fries. Not bad for $12, but impossible to give a basic, bland burger a 4. Not sure how this place got to a 4.4.

Yelp
Juicy thick patty, quality brioche buns, add a bit of some roasted hatch Chile what more can you ask from a delicious burger? Small simple menu, just a few burgers and dogs. Small place w/ a central bar and some smaller tables surrounding and they've got some patio tables as well. Friendly bar service.

Yelp
We decided to try the new burger place out and had high hopes, but were left fairly disappointed. In a neighborhood where you are competing with several other burger joints and bars that serve amazing burgers, this just did not hit the mark considering the price point. I will separate critique out into bullet points that hopefully the owner will find useful: - Pictures of food on social media vs product received was surprising, online the fries appear to be thin but fried well so they have color and are crispy, we received limp fries that barely had a crust on them and were pale yellow in color. The green chili burger is shown with a pile of roasted green chilies on it and the one we received had like 5 small pieces on top, so much so that my wife originally thought we got the wrong order. - Veggie patty description, I think including more detail on what your veggie patty is made of would be helpful. We ordered one burger with a vegetarian patty and she was surprised it was a black bean patty. I think most vegetarians would agree there is a difference so it might be better to either change your recipe to be a more vegetable focused burger or to change the description online to include that it is a blackbean burger. - Website ordering experience, make sure you thoroughly check the options on each service you choose to participate with. Through doordash in the section where you exclude toppings you are only allowed to select one removal which seems odd. - Kids burger should probably be a thinner patty so its easier to eat for smaller kids, though if the website allowed for more removal of toppings for a hot dog we probably would have just gone that route. Overall if I were to order this burger in a more rural area I would have not been as disappointed, but in NEPO and even on Killingsworth St itself I can think of 5 other respectable establishments that offer a better value product at even more competitive price points.

Yelp
One of the best burgers in Portland, hands down. Juicy and full of flavor. The onion rings are a must, crunchy and tender. Can't wait to try the Coney's. There's a new burger-sheriff in town, and its name is Lone Star. Get there soon.

Yelp
Best burger ever! And, they have gluten free buns that are the best I've had. Friendly staff and great music. So glad we went.

Yelp
Fantastic Green Chile Burger! Delicious onion rings and shoestring fries. Can't wait for my next visit!

Yelp
Met with my GF at Lone Star Burger Bar on 12/18 around 7PM. They were busy, but what surprised me was how well the wait staff was A) handling a lot of disparate requests from existing customers, B) Were attentive to new customers, and C) held an absolutely pleasant demeanor the whole time. She even was polite and accommodating to my GF's food allergy (garlic) and went above and beyond to check! We ordered the Green Chile Cheeseburger (add bacon), onion rings, and the cheeseburger with fries. This is, hands down, the best burger I've ever had! Big, juicy, bacon was flavorful, and the burger itself was extremely flavorful. the onion rings were light, flaky and flavorful - not too much onion and not too much breading. Fries were REALLY tasty when hot, and even after they cooled off, were still execellent! I personally thanked the chefs and tipped everyone above and beyond for such an amazing experience. Thank you! I WILL BE BACK MANY TIMES!

Yelp
Hour and half wait...not worth it. Fries are okay. Burger was bland and nothing to special. No apologies for waiting so long.. Just threw burgers on table and left. They need to wait to be tipped. They would have NOT gotten one.

Yelp
Service was very friendly, real people serving real food. Rosie made me an awesome rum punch, and the burger I got was big and juicy, definitely worth your money for such a generous serving. Seems like a great place to bring the whole fam or a hot date!

Leah G.

Yelp
Great burgers and super duper cocktails! Onion rings were delicious and fries are perfect.
