My husband had catfish, Mac and yam. I had fried chicken (white), collards and red beans and rice. We asked for hot water cornbread, but our waitress said they didn't have any today, more on this later.
My family had take out and said, I would love it because everything is salty, so I was actually looking forward to a little seasoning. Funny thing, the seasoning is selective. And even for me, it was too salty. The chicken and fish batter could have used some of the extra salt they put in the bollards and red beans.
First, the Mac & Cheese was immediately returned to the kitchen. The flavor was off and the cheese wasn't fully melted, like it wasn't even baked. I tasted my husband's yam, sweet like candy - Yes, YAM not yamS, because it was one chunk of yam in a bowl of sweet juice - and he tasted my collards. So, he got collards in exchange for the Mac and I ordered my own yam chunk. The red beans were not cooked all the way and crunchy.
After a while, another waitress checked in and we explained how we were looking forward to the hot water cornbread and disappointed they didn't have any. She said they did and put in an order. We should have stuck to the first answer. The hot water cornbread was the blandest, seasonless, and greasiest hot water cornbread I've ever had. It was dropped, not turned or fried on both sides, thin and all you tasted was the oil. Whatever oil they fried it in, was not it. After complaining, my husband saw one of the guys adding something to the batter in the bar area. Now I don't know what seasoning they had behind the bar, but the hot water cornbread was nasty. Why an entire paragraph, because the is no other word, or nice way to put it. It was nasty.
Pros:
The staff was friendly and fairly attentive, just enough for my liking. I enjoyed the softness and flavor of the cornbread muffins. The Muddy Water stole the show. Very tasty and not too sweet.
I can say we went, and check it off on the list. It will not be in my Soul food list, and unfortunately I wouldn't refer anyone here. But, they were packed so best of luck.
