Lonely Mouth - Review - Horfield - Bristol - The Infatuation

"Lonely Mouth is a day-to-night Japanese listening cafe with a brunch experience that will remind you of the last stoic hour of a night out. The music, courtesy of a two-stepping DJ, is loud but no one’s dancing, chaos has given way to frustration, and you already paid when you placed your order so you’re determined to squeeze a little joy out of the whole experience. Most people make the pilgrimage to this end of Gloucester Road for Lonely Mouth’s elusive daytime muse, the matcha cream french toast, but the best way to avoid a 72-minute wait is to stop by off-peak for one of the ube matchas or in the evening when they’re open late Thursday to Saturday. Chances are, you’ll be a lot more in the mood for pumping music and posing if you arrive with a full stomach (having had dinner at one of the hot spots a 10-minute drive away on Chandos Road) and a glass of natural wine in your hand." - Heidi Lauth Beasley

Had a tasty lunch here last week. I was feeling nostalgic of the chazuke I had had whilst in Japan so went to scratch an itch. The food was tasty with the tsukemono, silken tofu and nori being very flavourful and tasty. I went for the spicy plum tofu on a recommendation from a friend and was very glad with my choice. I think the only slight downside was there was a lot of rice, which is great in terms of portion, but was a little out of proportion with the rest of the dish. Next time I think I'd go for the teishoku. I also ordered the ube cream iced matcha latte which was a little disappointing. There was very little matcha taste considering it's £7.20. The ube cream was tasty and could've been the whole drink and I'd have enjoyed it more I think. The dinner menu looks good so I'd go back to try that too.

Food was good, although it took a bit to come out but it was really busy and I only saw one person working I had the pumpkin spice matcha which was nice but my friend got the matcha with ube cream and it was so good!! matcha french toast was nice but took a long time to come out, my friend got the kimchi toastie way before my french toast came out. so by the time my food came out hers was stone cold. also the matcha cream was very bitter i didn’t massively like the seating arrangement, was super close to other people to the point where all i could hear was their conversation. A girl had a drink before us at the table and the cup was there throughout our meal.

Food there was so unique delicious, I had never tried anything like it! I will definitely be back and recommend it to friends. Cocktails were also very unique and delicious. We went there quite late for dinner time, which perhaps is what made the service a bit slow. When it went past 9pm the place became more of a bar vibe with louder music and low lights, which was fun for us but if that’s not your vibe I’d recommend going there earlier. Yet to try their breakfast/brunch but for dinner I’d recommend this place which is an excellent addition to Gloucester rd!

Fast and polite service, (not table service but this is fine). Cozy environment and all dishes made with care, presented beautifully and fantastic variation on the plate and depth of flavour. Staff were great and the whole place has a really chill vibe. Pros: Quality of all food and drink was amazing., Really fast service., Staff were really nice. Cons: Seating arrangement is not the best., A little expensive £35 for two breakfasts & drinks

The place is really cute inside and has a nice atmosphere. We only tried the drinks, which are mostly milk really. Unfortunately, the berry flavor I chose wasn’t to my taste, so I didn’t finish it. Our order was also delayed for nearly 30 minutes, though the staff brought it out quickly once we reminded them. Prices feel a bit high for what’s offered, and an additional 20% VAT was added at the till which feels insane on an already overpriced 6£ match. You are obligated in the UK to include VAT on all displayed prices.

The most gorgeous place and AMAZING food. I loved the decor and how welcoming the place was, we were lucky to nab the last table in there. I started with a banoffi matcha (I will never get over it) wow! Then we both had the ginger pork, with egg and again I’m still thinking about how good it truly was, I loved all the combinations for the full breakfast (kimchi out of this world). Of course we had the French toast with Matcha syrup and the cheesecake, honestly nearly fell off my seat. Top 5 deserts of all time. Also staff were super lovely. We will be back!!

Really delicious food, took a trip here just to try the French toast and it didn’t disappoint…matcha cream is to die for!! My pineapple matcha wasn’t the best I’d had but my friend’s berry one and it was perfect…probably down to personal preference 🧡 Great place to come and try and can’t wait to come back for more!

As a lover of Japanese food I have wanted to try Lonely Mouth for a while. Having sampled their delicious fried chicken and rice set at their pop up at the Volunteer Tavern, I had high expectations and took a rare baby-free hour to myself to pay a visit. My expectations were exceeded with the warm and buzzing atmosphere. Busy and with great music. It felt worlds away from the rainy Gloucester road outside. I sat at the window and watched the world go by as I waited for my coffee and french toast. It took a little while (maybe 20mins) but it was absolutely worth the wait. The coffee was notably spectacular and I loved the mug it came in too. The french toast was exactly as expected; sweet, indulgent, maybe a little over the top but with a great balance of flavours. As someone who is usually a savoury brunch gal I enjoyed it thoroughly. A real treat. I will definitely be back to try the chazuke and the breakfast set in the future.
