"If we were as good at making an excellent first impression as Long Chim is, there’s a strong chance that our ex’s mum would still like our sparse Facebook updates. Alas, we are not, but at this vibey Thai residency on the ground floor of Soho’s Hovarda, staff will tenderly remove your coat, park you in front of a huge mural of a monkey hanging out in teacup, all with the promise of a sweet, alarmingly sippable pineapple Negroni arriving shortly. The golden, mirrored room sizzles and swells with blazer-donned date nights, heartfelt back-pat reunion greetings by the bustling open kitchen, and conversations that sound like an episode of a podcast called The Secret Inner Lives Of Ex-Upper East Siders. The Thai dishes are a comforting parade of well-done classics—hearty chunks of sticky, sweet pork, a skewer of subtle-spice squid with a proper smack of pickled ginger, meaty monkfish bathing in a rich, spice show curry—that all fall within the ‘nice’ bracket. Still, the buzz of the room carries the meal so that it still feels worthy of a low-key celebration or a last-minute meal in the area. video credit: Heidi Lauth Beasley video credit: Daisy Meager Food Rundown photo credit: Heidi Lauth Beasley Long Chim Rolls Well, it beats a sad breadstick, that’s for sure. This is a spring roll-adjacent starter, and we’re into the crispy fried shell and stringy, moist cabbage innards. Give it a generous dip in the accompanying soy sauce for a little more flavour. photo credit: Heidi Lauth Beasley Breaded Cured Pork A crispy little beefy nugget with a slightly sour flavour and subtle tingle. Although we found ourselves looking to match-make it with the nearest spicy prik nam pla. It’s a bit dry. video credit: Heidi Lauth Beasley Aromatic Curry Of Monkfish With Cucumber Relish The monkfish has a thick, creamy bite, ideal for soaking up the pond of rich, buttery curry. This cheerful, luminous number is one of the few things on the menu that isn’t afraid to bring the heat. Nose-dabbing napkins at the ready. video credit: Heidi Lauth Beasley Sweet Crispy Pork With Five Spice This was the only Long Chim dish that caused us to get a bit possessive. Pass the plate of sticky, near-caramelised pork? No, sorry. You should seek out the little jelly-like fatty pieces quietly, so as not to alert any nearby, hovering forks. video credit: Heidi Lauth Beasley Black Tiger Prawns Baked With Vermicelli, Spring Onions And Celery It could very well be a simmering Oedipus complex but we sure do love it when someone lifts the lid off a steaming ceramic pot for us. Especially when it contains a messy mass of stringy vermicelli, even if the aromatic flavour is a touch one-note. video credit: Heidi Lauth Beasley Grilled Sticky Rice With Banana Consider yourself on a banana excavation mission. Go on, get that spoon digging. If you catch the right mouthful of sticky rice and sugary banana, you’re in for a chewy treat." - Heidi Lauth Beasley

We had a great time at Long Chim. Food was outstanding, and the service fantastic. While the vegetarian options were quite limited, but what was available was very well done. The house cocktails were also a great way to start off the night.

David Thompson showing why he is the master of Thai food. A very different style of cooking than what has been the new Thai openings in London over recent years. Incredible depth of flavour in everything. The lamb with cumin is worth the trip alone. Quite exceptional. Go.

Delicious food - loved the black prawn, the sugar snap peas, the long chim rolls, the aubergine satay and the pomegranate salad. Staff was lovely and the decor is quite nice. My only issue is that it was a bit too expensive - we spent £50 each, which I’m not sure is necessary for a good Thai meal in London (especially when next door to Speedboat)

Long Chim in London's Chinatown is the latest project from Australian chef David Thompson, and it's definitely one to check out. If you're a fan of Thai food, you'll probably enjoy the menu here. My partner and I both loved the Penang curry with beef short rib – it was tender and flavorful. We also really liked the grilled squid. Even though it's not totally authentic, Long Chim has a great atmosphere and the service was fantastic.

Had a lovely dinner at Long Chim. The service was second to none. The service was efficient and our waitress gave great recommendations on popular dishes and drinks. I would recommend trying the cocktails and ordering a few starters

This is the new David Thompson adventure, annexed to Horvada. The space is cool, funky and the atmosphere is great. Me and my best friend went without a reservation, and we were very impressed by the great people welcoming us at the reception, all very helpful and kind. We were luckily given a table, and went in to order the whole menu, apart from the dessert, the cockles and the sugar snaps peas. The service is fantastic, very caring and attentive, the cooing is faultless, and everything we had was delicious. Perhaps the only minor faults laid with the black tiger prawns with vermicelli that were totally lacking in salt or seasoning, and the chim rolls that were uninspiring, but that is possibly just a slip as everything else was wonderful ! I can’t wait to go back.

Legendary chef David Thompson is in London with Long Chim, for a temporary residency in Hovarda, Soho. Staff were lovely, it’s a cool venue (with some counter seating so you can watch the chefs at work) and the food is outstanding. Thompson is a master of balance and makes big flavours work. Highly recommended, don’t miss this.

I called in here for dinner a few weeks back. My partner is from Sydney and immediately knew of the reputation of the place after I revealed where I’d reserved. The team were very welcoming, and the dining area is tasteful and well-designed. My partner kicked things off with a Sapparot cocktail, which was very moreish! Ordered some grilled squid as a nibble, which somehow acted as a brilliant palate cleanser for the meal ahead. The monkfish curry and, if my memory is right, the lamb with cumin, were much more substantial dishes than I was expecting, and totally delicious. We left very satisfied and will happily return and recommend to anyone looking for a slightly more refined Thai dining experience.
