The Best Restaurants in Richmond, Virginia

"Inn at Little Washington alum David Shannon showcases the fantastic twists on exquisite French fare he’s refined throughout his fine-dining career. Luscious dishes include swank bank (lobster mac and cheese) and a Fabergé egg “bedazzled” with caviar and dill cured salmon or Chesapeake Bay oysters surrounded in a “green fairy fog” of absinthe mist. Decade-old L’Opossum captures the eclectic spirit of its Oregon Hill neighborhood, between a phallic stained glass window and bathroom bursting with clowns. Try the very fun, plastic-wrap-covered Laura Palmer cocktail with gin, Dolin Blanc, cherries, and lime. For another fine-dining seasonal sensation a bit further out, consider Midlothian Chef’s Kitchen, which is also run by an Inn at Little Washington alum." - Robey Martin, Stephanie Ganz

"Where Dinner Becomes an Altered State This relatively new arrival to Richmond’s booming dining scene is located in Oregon Hill, once home to Civil War–era ironworkers. L’Opossum has a witty menu (“Beef Swellington”, “Darth Grouper”, “Polyamorous Hippie”) and flamboyant, romantic décor that sets it apart from the pack. The food is punchy, nuanced, and memorable. Service is relaxed yet professional. Reservations are essential."

We visited for our anniversary. The hostess was very welcoming and wished us happy anniversary right away. We thankfully were seated at a booth which was lovely and we really preferred it rather than the row of tables down the middle. Our server was great and gave us a rose prosecco to celebrate. We started with the grilled Caesar which was excellent. I would love to try to recreate this at home because it was so good! For our main dish, my husband had the Morrocan chicken dish which had layers of flavor and was delicious. I had the fillet which was one of the best I have ever had. From the ambiance to the drinks to the food this was my favorite meal I have had in Richmond. It is worth the hype!

Took my wife for an anniversary dinner and it was phenomenal! Our server was so nice and funny, she explained things well and checked on us often. Every single employee there was so sweet. The decor is so cool and the food is delicious! It was such a fun experience and really made our first anniversary memorable. Thank you so much!

Google
what a beautiful and well-curated experience! my partner works in fine dining though we often don’t get the chance to go out to eat due to conflicting work schedules, and we wanted to go somewhere extra special for our anniversary. we had been looking forward to this for months, and it blew away our expectations. the staff were very attentive but not overbearing, knowledgeable on the menu, and all congratulated us on our anniversary. you could tell every piece of food on the plate was placed with intention, you could see every ingredient when the dish was brought out, and the flavors all really shone through. I could go on and on about how lovely all the little details were, but you just need to experience it for yourself!! (pictured: tempura battered squash blossom stuffed with buttermilk ricotta, “swank bank” lobster mac & cheese, quail stuffed with pork cheek, jock snifter, & peach cobbler with buttermilk bourbon ice cream)

My husband and I tried this place for the first time this summer and we were pleasantly surprised by our experience. The service was elevated with non -invasive servers and food came out at a good pace. We shared the Cesar salad and each had the filet and highly recommend both dishes. The steak was perfectly grilled to medium rare and the flavors from all the other ingredients complemented each other. The best Cesar salad and filet I’ve had in Richmond and looking forward to our next visit. Bonus points for serving warm bread and soft butter.

We came here for our 10th anniversary...we had the escargot--which was fabulous--a bottle of wine, and ordered the Quail and Lamb Belly for entrees. For dessert we had some chocolate thing recommende that was excellent and something like an elevated apple pie which was also excellent. The vibe was cool w the music playing, and such an eclectic atmosphere. Service was outstanding at the bar. It's hard to get a reservation so plan more than a month in advance. 5 stars!

Google
I had the best night of my life in this restaurant, the thought and care that goes into every detail of the experience is so subtle and unpretentious you almost forget your dining in a restaurant, it feels more like your coolest friend is hosting dinner in their house. The service was remarkable, extremely welcoming. The food????I could cry of how good it was, the bread and butter they give you in the beginning had no business being that good, followed with the steak tartare which I think about at least 5 times a day, it's such a balanced plate, so explosive in your mouth, not your commercial restaurant steak tartare, finished with the most special dessert which was a chocolate lava cake with homemade ice cream and homemade whipped cream, insane. The decoration is to marvel at, every detail is so carefully curated.

I’ve never had food and drinks so good and flavorful, our bartender was the best and a friendly soul. The drinks are so strong you wouldn’t need to drink the entire glass to get to where you need to be, ifykyk. Flavorful dishes from the appetizers to the desserts; so many flavors working together instead of competing with each other just hits your soul. It make you remember the good times in your life, food so good you’ll cry tears of joy!

What a FANTASTIC restaurant. My wife and I visited here for a specific reason. David Shannon, the owner, purchased a painting of Bette Davis that belonged to my deceased father. The sale was through ebay and initially I didnt know what would happen to the painting. When I shipped it, and then found out it was going to be displayed in the restaurant, I knew I had to eventually make the trip from California to Richmond to see it in the restaurant. It had been several years since the transaction. I contacted David to ensure we could get a table since we were coming from so far away. He accommodated us and made certain we would be seated at the table with Bette on display. We arrived, and honestly, we felt like we were treated as special guests. Our waitress knew why we were there. David came to our table and spoke with us. We were treated to several appetizers. Dinner was excellent. Service was outstanding. Atmosphere was awesome. Such an eclectic display of art. So fun to look at. I could probably go on and on about our experience here. It really touched my heart in the way we were treated. And, it was a bit emotional for me to see my father's most prized possession on display for all to enjoy. If you dine here, ask for the Bette Davis table and give some "cheers" to my dad Harry. Thank you so much David! We hope to come visit again!!

Yelp
EAT HERE!!! Wow. I have eaten at some amazing establishments in the world but this has to be one of my favorite dining experiences! The atmosphere is so vibrant and truly something you must experience for yourself. I could try to describe it to you, but no words could really portray it properly. In the most positive sense, you feel like you're in a Parisian Funhouse fever dream and it is so freaking awesome. The staff were amazing and so kind I was solo traveling for work and they got me a seat right up at the bar. The bartender was great and gave many suggestions for cocktails and even let me have a sample of a cocktail that I was considering I ended up getting the Italian porn star cocktail(holy *** you need to get this!) For food I got the daily special croquets for an appetizer , the coq au Morocco for my main, and the daily special flan with lemon curd for dessert. Everything was so flavorful and delicious. Savory and acidity, sweet, and crunchy and creamy. All dishes were so well balanced I only wish I lived in Richmond so I could come back again and again! Also bonus points the dish ware was all STUNNING and so unique.

Yelp
A masterful blend of French elegance + American creativity. Its dark and moody decor set the tone for your dining experience. There are seasonal dishes and staples that remain. We ordered two cocktails, not on the menu. The escargot (in a sweet garlic sauce) and fabergé egg (bedazzled with caviar, lobster and cured salmon) was a must to start. I can't remember the name of the soup du jour but it was creamy and finished with pine nuts. Coq Au Morocco was a tender cut of chicken seasoned with cinnamon and Moroccan herbs. The fish entrée was salmon + trout and lovely ribbons of beet in between. Susan was attentive and knowledgeable about each of the dishes.

Yelp
The mark of a top-notch 5 restaurant isn't when things work without a hitch, but when things go unexpectedly and how the restaurant handles its business. TRUST that you are in the hands of 5 star dining when you land in this quirky, exquisite spot. Story-telling meets fine-dining in this wide open, celebration of all sides of life.

Yelp
I finally went here for the first time for my birthday! (I had to make reservations 3 months out and the earliest was 8pm). My BF ordered wine and I got a smokey tequila cocktail that was delicious. For appetizers we got the steak & tomato tartare. That was my favorite of the night! They also give you one slice of free bread and butter but they come around frequently asking if you want more. For entrees, we both ordered the beef swellington medium rare. The temperature came out perfect. The dish was good but it was REALLY salty. My BF's dish was overly salty as well. Other than that everything was great. It's also a very dark restaurant, so if you're not a fan of those don't come here. The ambiance is really eclectic too, random pictures and statues. Overall I want to come back to try the other appetizers and possibly another entree.

Yelp
L'Opossum is one of the best restaurants in Richmond, if not the best. The service is always fantastic and our waitress, Anja, was lovely :-). She made great recommendations! We had the venison carpaccio (special), beef swellington (this is a MUST and always on the menu), the Moroccan chicken (special), and two desserts (one of them was a coffee flan with lemon curd and the other a kouign-amann that was sooooooo heavenly. Everything was seasoned well, came out hot (besides carpaccio & flan, of course), and full of flavor. I can always count on an amazing experience and it's always consistently mind-blowing. I also just love the eclectic and Wes Anderson-eqsue vibes of the restaurant. The complexity of flavors, the nuances, etc. is an experience in itself. If you haven't been, make your reservation ASAP!

Yelp
Ambiance was destroyed by the extremely loud music. Twice we asked for the volume to be lowered to no avail. As result all the patrons had to speak loudly to hear each other giving the restuarant the sound of a sports bar. Our waitress had to bend down and cover one ear to take our order. We were dining with friends who had recently moved to Richmond and they were very disappointed. They will probably never dine here again. The food is outstanding as are the drinks. It was just too loud to enjoy the evening, which was an unusual experience.

Yelp
Without a doubt, one of the greatest restaurants in Richmond. The ambience./decor is next level it will inspire and entice your dining experience by far. Excellent service from the staff with information and suggestions about the menu. The food is visually and exceptionally well crafted unlike I've ever seen. I finish my review of L'Opossum with the words L'Awesome!!!!

Yelp
It took me far too long to eat at L'Opossum, but glad I finally made it! My husband and I had taken the day off to go sailing, but the weather was a washout so we had to pivot to a new plan. I had watched L'Opossum but getting a reservation is nearly impossible, but lo and behold, I found one on a Wednesday night and snagged it. We decided to have dinner here then visit the Virginia History Museum to see the Julia Child exhibit the next day. Turns out David Shannon was featured in the exhibit...guess it was meant to be. We were on our way for our reservation and received a text that our seats were ready. We had 2 bar seats, which I loved. Our bartender Jonathan was wonderful, helped us make good decisions and made great cocktails to boot. For drinks we got the Inner Saboteur (I might have the name wrong)...it was a tequila-based drink with peppers and cilantro infused. So good. My husband got their version of an old fashioned and he really enjoyed it. For appetizers they had a cucumber and almond gazpacho (I'm a super fan of gazpacho so I had to try it), the venison carpaccio and the beef tartare. The gazpacho was amazing! The other appetizers were awesome too, but that gazpacho...mmmmmm. For entrees we got the filet and lamb belly. They had some really tasty sounding specials and I was thinking about fish, but Jonathan said since it was my first time I should try a classic. Glad I did! It was wonderful. I ended up bringing some home and it was awesome heated up the next day. We didn't make it to dessert, but I love devils food cake and regret not getting it...Next time. The irony is that the next day as we were visiting the Julia Child exhibit we saw David Shannon featured in a section about Virginia chefs. He deserves the recognition. He's created a quirky, unique, fun and delectable restaurant that I will most definitely visit again soon.

Yelp
My partner and I decided to try L'Opossum for a date night on Saturday - we had heard good things and it did not disappoint! Reservations fill up fast, so I had to book a couple months in advance in order to secure a table (rather than bar seating) on a weekend. Our reservation was at 5pm, and the restaurant was not overly crowded when we got there, which was nice. We were seated right away, and our server was very helpful in explaining the specials and menu items. I ordered the lamb with the "Throwing Shade" cocktail, and my partner ordered the lobster Mac and cheese with wine. Both of our entrees were so flavorful and well-prepared. The flavors in my lamb dish all worked so well together. I also greatly enjoyed the cocktail, the orange flavor was very refreshing. For dessert, we shared a lemon lavender creme brûlée and chocolate cake a la mode. Both desserts hit the spot; the white chocolate ice cream was especially good. The restaurant itself if very quirky and fun - a lot of interesting pictures fill the walls, and the lighting is dark and moody. All of the servers were friendly and helpful. It is centrally located in Oregon Hill, close to downtown, and we easily found street parking within a block or two. Overall a fun night out, I'd love to come back again.

Yelp
If you've never been to L'Opposum you really need to make the trip, all of us were saying this place is definitely one of the best in RVA as far as variety of dishes and deliciousness. I can tell you that everything in the pictures were eaten with zero crumbs left by any of us. It was an amazing meal... from Leek Soup, Caesar Salad, Escargots with Ham biscuit, Halibut, Beef Swellington, Stuffed Quail Cajun style, Lamb Roulade with Choux Dumplings w/ truffle service, that is a first for me, and OMG this Mint Ice Cream pie with a coffee chocolate crust, amazing! Make a visit you won't be disappointed!

Yelp
Okay, I get the hype. L'Opossum is probably now one of my top restaurants in Richmond now. The restaurant is in the middle of Oregon Hill. Seems small on the outside but when you walk in, you are surrounded by the creative decor and ambiance. I had to make a reservation two months in advance as this is a very popular restaurant and it was pretty busy inside (I went around 8PM). I had the market fish dish (halibut) which was paired really well with the saffron cream sauce. My partner had the filet mignon deconstructed beef Wellington which he loved a lot. The meat was perfectly tender and juicy. Service is very attentive and answered all of our questions. The menu changes seasonally but this winter menu was wonderful. Hopefully I can come back to try a different menu !

Yelp
Well, it has been seven years but we finally decided to give this place another try. I got there and was immediately greeted and seated, which was nice. The restaurant is very quirky and eclectic and you do feel a little squashed in, but everyone from service was kind and attentive, and things moved along quickly. My friend has pretty severe allergies so we appreciated the time the server took to identify safe foods and double check with the chef for a few alterations. We ordered the onion dip and the Beef Swellington. We also ordered some cocktails as well. Everything was delicious! The onion dip was great though we lamented that there wasn't enough of it. Our swellingtons were cooked perfectly and I wish we had more sauce because I would have gotten in a glass to drink. We split some desserts and those too were to die for. It's a very expensive place, but well worth it for a special celebration. Definitely a gem.

Yelp
Best restaurant in Richmond, hands down. No debate. Every time I come here, I am absolutely blown away. Every single dish is fantastic. The drinks are fantastic. The staff is super kind and knowledgeable. The decorations are everything. The theming is so cheeky and funny. Make sure to book a reservation in advance. This place is worth every penny.

Yelp
Had a very memorable dining experience at L'Opossum. We were seated immediately when we arrived. The restaurant was almost full even on a Thursday evening. Our server was friendly, but they had an issue making an old fashioned at the bar. We asked for a bourbon list, but she had to see what they had. A restaurant of this caliber should definitely have an alcohol menu. They were out of the bourbon we wanted so just made it with some odd tasting liquor, and didn't even mention. It obviously didn't taste right...guess they thought we wouldn't notice. I didn't really appreciate that. They did comp our drink, which was nice. We started with the crab cake. It was delicious. They also brought some fresh bread. We ordered the beef swellington. It was amazing!! I don't really love steak, but loved. It. Best steak I've ever had. We also had the fish entree, which was yummy, as well. I ordered the truffle service. It was cool but not worth the money. For dessert, we tried the flan and the chocolate cake dessert. The flan was underwhelming, but the chocolate dessert was great! We ordered another drink, and our server seemed irritated. About halfway through the drink, she informed us we needed to finish so they could use our table. I get turning tables and all, but she could have been nicer about it, especially when you're paying $600 for dinner. It was a cool atmosphere but wouldn't dine there again.

Yelp
We had an incredible dinner here for our anniversary. First, the bartender made an excellent aviation cocktail (this is rare to find). The food was delicious and met an important fine dining requirement for me: the truffle in the lobster Mac and cheese was perfect and NOT overly strong. The ambience is sexy and fun. Maximalist, lush, everything about this place is decadence. Love it and can't wait to go back. The music was a little loud for my taste but I'm old.

Yelp
Looked forward for some time to experiencing L'opposum, but very disappointed. Bartender was fantastic, ambiance was original, food was solid...and I've never been so persistently rushed at a restaurant and then asked 3 times by the owner if I "was following him" on why the 2 hour limit was important when we'd been there 80 minutes and $250 in. We never asked to see the owner or anyone else. We tipped 10% and departed. We were going to let it go. But then the owner cancelled our Resy reservation 10 minutes after we left. Only reason we can think of - he anticipated a bad review and you can't leave reviews if res is cancelled. Feels petty so we feel it valuable to share our experience. Resy was clear that there was a 2 hour window for the reservation we had at 5. We were there before 5, but they didn't open the front door until 5 min after and after knocking on the door twice. Place was empty so we asked if we could shift our reservation from bar to table. Answer was no, tables were full. Ok, fair. Drinks and apps came quick. Finishing apps, staff quite literally asked if they could clear our plate while I was holding my fork after eating the last bite, and then stood there. We were asked 3 times for our entree order while still eating the apps. It's 530ish now. We order, food comes quickly and was solid not spectacular. Again, food on my plate and asked twice if they could clear plate. We were asked about desert at about 615, while another staff member was clearing plates. We asked the bartender half joking if he was trying to get rid of us. He laughed, then owner shows up. He said they weren't rushing us but wanted to make sure we had time for dessert because there was a 2 hour limit. At 620p. He then proceeded to confirm if I saw the 2 hour limit, how important the window was for them and said "are you following me?" 3 times. It's 625p. Been sitting for 80 of our 120 minutes and now the owner is saying how important it is for them to hold to 2 hours and "are you following me?" We asked if he was following us and answer was yes. We declined dessert. 5 min later he brought a dessert out on the house. It's 630p. Was a nice gesture I guess but drinks were empty, we had the check in front of us and spent 5 minutes confirming we were "following him." We left and noted 6 tables had not been seated yet We won't be heading back. If you go, I recommend you familiarize yourself with the menu before you head there so you're prepared.

Yelp
Phenomenal from start to finish. One of the best dining experiences we've had in Richmond so far. The service was great, we sat at the bar and the bartender was super attentive and answered questions that we didn't even ask him directly. The drinks were good but the food was spectacular. The lobster mac n cheese was soooo good! Oysters were some of the best we've had. Steak tartare was awesome and the rum dessert was really good. We'll definitely be back!

Yelp
TRYING 2 HARD TO BE DIFFERENT Had super high hopes for this place. Drove all the way from Raleigh to take a relative for a significant birthday. My first impression was that the homoerotic/clown motif was a bit over the top. Music was pleasantly eclectic and not blared. It was darker inside than I prefer. Dark enough in fact, that I was forced to de-bone my quail by braille. Crab cakes had actual lump crab meat. The Swellington entree was cooked perfectly and quite tasty. Overall, the food was very good but just seemed overly busy - too much going on. Our server was awesome, super friendly and attentive. No complaints there.

Yelp
One of my favorite restaurants ever. The ambiance, the music, the service and the food are all impeccable. I had the Ceasar salad, crab cakes and Bundt cake. They were all amazing. The grilled Ceasar salad was perfectly charred and flavorful, the crab cakes were all lump and the pirate cake was perfect in moisture and sweetness, it is a hidden gem in Richmond! Go if you haven't already!

Yelp
L'opossum is a quirky and moody place. The location is very unassuming but as soon as you passed the velvet curtain you are transported to a different world. We were only able to get a bar seating booking 3 weeks out. Being in the far end of the restaurant next to the kitchen prob killed the vibe a little. And perhaps being in the corner the bar tender couldn't notice us out of the 3 parties of 2. We eventually had to call his name to get his attention. The menus are cheeky with funny descriptions. The food was very nice, French country fairs. I had catch of the day and the fish was cooked to perfection with crusty skin and flaky tender fish meat. The accompanied wild rice and vegetables were a nice addition but after a couple of bites it became a salty soggy nuisance. Perhaps reducing the volume would've been better. My dining partner had the quail and she throughly enjoyed it. We also shared a limoncello crème bulee. It was nice but I didn't get the limoncello from it. Overall it was a very pleasant dining experience but I am not sure the $43 main course plus 3 weeks wait paid off the hype.

Yelp
I heard nothing but great things and this restaurant did not disappoint. I loved the ambiance - dim, intimate lighting with interesting and unique decor. The music was just the right volume and it was not particularly loud even being a full house, which made it a pleasant experience for someone like myself with sensory sensitivities. The menu had a variety of options. We got the faberge egg, the lobster Mac and cheese, filet, and a seasonal lavender crème brûlée which were all absolutely delicious. The service was prompt and we were well taken care of.

Yelp
Oh, L'Opossum, you have my heart . This is one special place. From the moment you walk in through the thick velvety curtains at the door, you have entered a maximalist, eclectic den of luxury and decadence best enjoyed through a lens of nostalgia and humor. An array of whimsical ‍, colorful light fixtures are flanked by walls painted thickly with a rich red paint, upon which are hung a smattering of memorabilia and art . The lighting is dim, the quirk of the decor is endearing, and the food is pure magic . I've had the pleasure of eating here a few times and every time I'm more blown away. I started the meal with a delightfully cocktail called 'The Jock Snifter', composed of Tom of Finland Vodka, Guava Jelly, Grapefruit & Aquavit. After drinks, we followed it up with Les Escargots a la ham biscuit . Snails will always be a divisive ingredient, but they're a personal favorite. Served with a garlic beurre blanc , I was sorry when it was gone. Luckily, I had the Filet Mignon of Beef "Swellington", which is basically (although the word basic has no place here) a deconstructed beef wellington . Beef wellington is my all time favorite meal, so I was hesitant to order a version that would dare to deconstruct it. However, I'm SO glad that I took the risk, because it was a show stopper . The absolutely perfect filet is topped with a jaunty little "fascinator" hat of truffled duxelles aux Champignons et Cognac wrapped up in puff pastry, and drizzled with pink peppercorn and port reduction. Find an occasion to get yourself here- it is worth the splurge! And, if you can't find one, don't sleep on making that reservation and come Ċëḷëḅṛäẗë the fact we have a restaurant this good in Richmond.

Yelp
My husband and I ate here last night and were sadly very disappointed by the food, especially for the crazy high prices. We live in DC and go out for French food constantly, and couldn't believe that the food here was more expensive than anything in downtown dc. Our server was very sweet and did a great job explaining everything, but the food didn't live up to the explanation. We started with the squash soup and the escargots per her recommendation. The soup was so sour, someone went crazy with the vinegar to the point where it was hard to eat. The escargots were fine, nothing special. For entrees my husband got the beef swellington and I got the stuffed quail. We were given the option of adding table side truffle service which he said yes to, and the guy who did it must've never seen a truffle shaved before. He used a micro plane that produced dust instead of the beautiful round shavings of truffle most places do. Not worth the money at all. Once again, the sauces on both plates were so sour, it left a bizarre taste in our mouth. I will say the quail was very good on its own, I just wish the greens and sauce didn't have so much acid I was excited by their dessert menu but after the first two rounds of food we felt like we had seen enough. Service was great but the food was very disappointing and I wish we spent our one night in Richmond at a place like Stella's where we knew what we would have gotten.

Yelp
Had dinner last night and overall it was a nice experience. The decor was great and the music even better. It is definitely eclectic with its art and ambience. Service was outstanding. The food- the French onion dip as a starter was good but a little small for price. Entrees were the crab cakes, were good not epic but solid, the beef Wellington, delicious and the Moroccan chicken also delicious. Desserts were solid. The price- pretty steep so although food was good not so sure it aligns with the very expensive pricing.

Yelp
The atmosphere, staff and food were amazing. The decor and menu definitely stand out as a little risqué, but not over the top

Yelp
Have been to L Opossum many times and every experience has lived up to the hype. All food and cocktails are created with great thought to flavor and presentation. This go round we had reserved bar dining (only option). The service had a slow start. We sat for over 10 mins before the bartender asked for our drink order.. I get it, one person making drinks for the entire restaurant takes some time. But after that point he was very attentive. I ordered the Inner Saboteur, my guy had Throwing Shade. I absolutely loved the jalapeño and bell pepper infused tequila. It was such a uniquely flavored cocktail. For our meal, we started with the crab and corn bisque and French onion dip. Then dinner we shared the beef swellington and Capt Jared's daily catch - Arctic Char. Who doesn't love a little surf and turf. The guest beside us at the bar had the crab cakes and the meal looked so wonderful I initially doubted the fish selection but the Char was rich and flavorful and the muscles were a nice accompaniment. After dinner we had to throw in the towel as there was absolutely no room left for dessert. Suggestion to diners: Don't sit at the bar if you can help it. You get a better dining experience at a table for the same cost. Plus you won't have people constantly walking past you running food and dirty dishes. Bring cash as there's a 4% feefor cards and be mindful of the bill as the 4% is added to the cost of each item so if you're paying cash, you have to calculate the cost minus the 4% to ensure proper tipping. The music can get loud, maybe bc the restaurant was clearing out as we had a later reservation. So less people chatting means louder volume of music? Also, the music doesn't create a more relaxed vibe as you would hope for at a high end restaurant.

Yelp
This is one of Richmond's Crown Jewels for dining! It is tucked away in such an unassuming little brick building, but the moment you step through the believer curtains at the entrance you are transported so to a restaurant in France! The dark moody atmosphere make it the perfect spot for an intimate, celebratory meal! The staff is so kind and accommodating; they will bend over backwards to make sure you have the best experience you can have. They were prompt and friendly, and made sure there was never an empty glass on the table! The food was exquisite and it rotates from season to season! When I went I got the quail and it was melt in your mouth delicious! We also got the lobster Mac and cheese to share and it was the richest, most delicious Mac and cheese I have ever had! You would think you were in Maine with how much lobster they put on it! I am for sure returning for more!

Yelp
I really liked the curtains at the door when you first came through the door. It Made it feel like you were entering a different world. The decor also helped with that, very eclectic random pieces, which were all very interesting. Quirky to say the least. We ordered 2 cocktails (throwing shade, and the spicy tequila cocktail). My cocktail was a little on the sweet side, but still enjoyable. We started with the soup of the day (lobster bisque with a beet drizzle). Very delicious, I think the drizzle was for aesthetic, because I didn't taste the beet at all. Our entrees were, the catch of the day (Artic Char) and the quail stuffed with waygu. Quail was delicious, served over a very flavorful ca jun rice with shrimp, and the sauce was delightful. My friend said her fish was cooked to perfection with crusty skin, and flaky tender meat. We ordered the limoncello creme brulee for dessert. I am not big on desserts, so I can't speak to how good it was. My friend said it was nice. We were only able to get a bar seating booking that was 3 weeks out. We were seated at the end of the bar right by the chef's pass. Not the most desirable seating, but it was fine. Our server was also our bartender. Nice guy over all, however it was strange he didn't notice us for an extended amount of time, and we had to call him over. There were only 2 other parties seated at the bar. He was nice, and explained everything thoroughly, but I just felt like he could have been a pinch more attentive. Overall, I do recommend L'Opossum. Looking for a delicious meal in a fun place, go here. This take on modern french fair, is CERTAINLY delicious and unexpected. I loved the funny word play of the cocktails on the menu. Anything different, and eclectic you can count me in. The price of their entree's, I thought was a little steep, however, I'm not gonna knock their hustle!

Yelp
Oh mannnn... RVA restaurants are 3 for 3 this trip, rounded out by this James Beard Award semi finalist. I've been dying to come here since it first opened and every time thereafter whenever any friend raves about it. Finally we had our chance snagging a last minute cancellation. Food is a solid 5/5 even if priced similar to New York City. Portions were generous without being too much to handle. A friend suggested I order the Faberge Egg which was essentially their creative spin on a deviled egg topped with salmon roe and black caviar, served on a bed of bitter greens and wrapped in smoke salmon. For my main, I chose the pork belly on a bed of fava beans and other vegetables with a red tomato reduction (I think?) - melts in your mouth kind of goodness, yet the outside was slightly crispy. My husband ordered the market Filet Mignon topped with foie gras. The most perfect reddish- pink center you could imagine. Next time I'm ordering that. Overall fantastic dining experience that lives up their reputation, from the food to the over-the-top decoration and ambiance.

Yelp
Service was friendly and prompt, ambience was nice, music not too loud so we could converse. The rest of our party seemed to enjoy the food, but I was really not impressed. It's trying a bit too hard to be quirky I think, and it's really not French cuisine at all. I had crab cakes, two tiny 1.25 inch things which tasted decent but were really an appetizer at best. This on a bed of spinach which somehow tasted like it had vinegar on it? Quite unpleasant. The two tiny potates were well cooked. I've eaten at similarly priced restaurants in London, Paris, Prague and in a number of other large US cities. This place isn't even close. Honestly the worst thing is the menu which tells you almost nothing about the food, and is just trying to be clever.

Yelp
Everyone is raging about this place wanted to give it a try, the food really didn't disappoint. The oyster app is really good, oven baked with spinach and bacon really brings out a good flavor. The filet mignon was cooked to perfection. No sauce needed. It topped with a wonton pocket of foie gras. So adding some creamy taste to it, and the truffle oil just makes it smell extra delicious. My partner had the pork belly, it's really the tender. The decor in this place is like a old gay bar turned into a restaurant. A lot of queer art and male nudity display. A lot of "David" in every corner where you lay eyes to. Really funky and exotic Make sure to make reservation WAY ahead of time, or frequently check the last minute cancellation. I was able to grab a late 8:30pm seating only a day in advance.

Yelp
Very creative food, expertly prepared. The atmosphere is very casual, funky, and eclectic. The service is on point and attentive. The food is the star here and it shines. Nothing is cookie cutter, but it all works. A gem for high end dining.

Yelp
Ugh L'Opossum, how I love you so... been coming here since the beginning and it's just my favorite place in RVA. So fabulous, so fun, so fancy - and they make me feel like a rock star the minute I walk in the door. It's just my happy place - perfect vibes every time!

Yelp
We travel to Richmond every fall for our anniversary, this year we discovered L'Opossum a must for anyone looking for excellent service and a great dinning experience. Everything from cocktails, to appetizers, to main course, to dessert was fabulous and unique. Top notch service in a non up tight surroundings. Escargot was extremely good and the duck confit was one of the best we have ever had. Halibut was stellar and the Moroccan spiced chicken were must haves. The custard dessert hit the spot. Also cannot forget very good wine list. If you have the opportunity do not miss. You will need reservations.

Yelp
Fantastic service. We arrived at 5:30 and had to be out by 7:30 as we were seeing a show at Altria at 8pm and they worked with us to make sure we could be out by then! So kind & attentive. The food is absolutely incredible. I think it's some of the best food I've ever had.

Yelp
This was as much of an experience as it was a meal. We did not have reservations so we took a chance and showed up right at five on a Friday night and were able to get a table! Because it was our anniversary dinner we went all in. Cocktails were amazing, appetizers a work of art, entrees were surprising filling, and we had some wonderful Cabernet with the main course as well. Desserts were next level!

Yelp
L'Opposum feels like a secret in Richmond, because I had literally never heard of this place until my partner found it and decided to book a spot. We had to make the reservation over a month in advance, because dinner spots fill up very fast. It is located on the intersection of two residential streets with very lackluster signage and a single door. We expected service to be attentive and a little more timely, but it was just fine and nothing to write home about. As vegetarians we asked about options and were told about a couple menu choices - to start, we got the French Onion Dip and Vegan Orgy, both of which were pretty good. I really like caramelized onions and so enjoyed the French Onion Dip, although some of the onions were a bit burnt. The vegan dips with poppadoms were pretty good, we liked the red pepper hummus and the pesto dips the best. For mains we got the Mon Petit Chou and Swank Bank mac & cheese without lobster (which I appreciated they said they charge the same as the Mon Petit Chou since the expensive lobster is removed from the dish). The braised cabbage, savory oniony broth and homemade ricotta in the Mon Petit Chou was delicious, and we liked that dish more than the Swank Bank, which tasted a little weird and not super creamy. Tbh one of the best parts of the meal was probably the complimentary bread and creaaaaamy housemade butter - like eating a fluffy cloud! Would recommend L'O for a special date night but tbh you aren't missing much if you don't come / aren't able to get a reservation.

Yelp
Menu is creative and food was delicious. Would have been a 5 except for the service. We were a party of 6 celebrating my mother's 86th birthday. My credit card was charged $300 in advance because of our party size. Reservation was at 5:15 and 4 of us were there early, but 2 were running late. At 5:30, the manager came to our table and told us that there was another party for our table at 8:15 pm and wanted to know when the other 2 would be there. Literally as he walked away, the rest of our party walked in. When we left at 7:30 pm, I made sure to tell him that he had 45 minutes to turn the table. We won't be returning.

Yelp
I have not had the pleasure of eating here, but it's not for lack of trying. Can't ever get reservations and when you call, the front staff are rude and don't point you in the right direction. Also they are listed in both open table and on resy but don't accept resy reservations. I'm sure the food is excellent but likely will never get the opportunity. Also who only accepts cash?!?!?

Yelp
This restaurant overall is a 10 out of 10 experience! The staff and food were awesome! The grilled Caesar salad was superb with grilled romaine with croutons, Parmesan cheese, croutons, capers, and the freshest tomato. The salad dressing was fresh and tangy. The bread service had the best tasting butter it was creamy and rich. The crab cake was truly lump crab meat with the perfect fingerling potatoes with cream sauce accompanied by spin as ch and pickled beets. The Beef Swellington hands down the best piece of steak I have ever eaten. It was juicy , seasoned well and cooked to perfection! My family was truly satisfied and now they are spoiled with deliciousness!

Yelp
It's been six years since my first 5 star review of L'Opossum, so I figured it was time for an update, and... they haven't missed a beat. They're still my favorite restaurant in Richmond. Every single dish is amazing. I got the Faberge Egg appetizer. Fun and delicious. A bit salty, but so what. I forgot what my friend got, but his was also salty. Hmmm. For the main course, I got the crabcakes, which were delicious and plentiful. I ate every bite and damned near licked the plate! My friend got the lamb, and it was oh so delicious. The lamb was so tender, and the spaetzle was what took it over the top. Such a comfort food! Makes you feel loved and safe! And a very generous portion. He took most of it home. For dessert, I got the devil's in the details. Definitely for the chocolate lover, and the perfect sized portion. My friend got the lavender-limoncello creme brulee. He liked it. The decor is so weird to me. Dark. The menu is still over-written without telling you what you need to know about what you're ordering. That said, our server was very good with describing what we asked about. L'Opossum is a special experience, with a special price! But something you MUST experience.

Yelp
I'll be so for real I hated this place Confusing atmosphere Food was mid Way overpriced Waitress spilled wine all over myself and my partner Staff acted bizarre the whole time And for a place with gender neutral bathrooms it was an oddly unwelcoming space

Yelp
Ah, L'Opossum, how do I love thee? Let me count the ways. Actually, in order to not make this an absolute novel, because having been more than once the list just sort of goes on forever, please accept that the ever-changing menu, the delicious cocktails, the ingenious appetizers and entrees, and the incredibly eccentric décor are just an experience you have to have to understand. The singular downside (excepting the number of dishes that have foie gras, which I do not eat, But which most people do not exactly see as a negative) is that it's extremely difficult to get a table. The place is usually booked a month or more in advance, which requires either a great deal of prior planning or, if you are lucky, calling the restaurant directly to see if they might have spot open. Out of the seven or eight entrees and appetizers and considerably-more-than-that drinks I have sampled, literally everything is a hit. The names are cheeky, the flavors are exquisitely well balanced, the ingredients are seasonal and often local if they can manage, and my dessert is occasionally on fire which really, what more could a girl want?

Yelp
I am so sad as we waited 3 months to get in with a reservation. Trust me when I say it really is "hype." I am so sad as it was a special day and the food did not live up to the price or my expectation. It all looked good, but it was all salty .. what a freaking shame! I am going to stick with Rappahannock's when I am paying more. The drinks were good and the service was good.

Yelp
L'Opossum is my very favorite restaurant in Richmond! Chef David Shannon is an absolute genius when it comes to food. He puts a fun twist on modern French cuisine, and takes food to another level. The house cocktails are worth trying--so fun and really tasty. The foie gras preparation varies seasonally, but my husband always enjoys it. As far as entrées, my husband and I both love their classics, the Beef "Swellington" and the "Swank Bank." Their seasonal rotating entrées are also a solid choice and never disappoint. For dessert, try the "Devil's in the Details" (formerly "Hot Black Bottom á la mode") if you love chocolate. The Swashbuckling Bundt Pirate is also one of our favorite desserts. Yo-ho-ho to Hot Buttered Rum!!! Take a closer look at the wall hangings and decor, because the food isn't the only whimsical and attention grabbing showstopper you'll find! L'Opossum has a great, fun vibe and the best music! We've discovered many a great cover song thanks to our L'opossum dining experiences. The service is always exceptional and our experiences have been perfectly executed. Whenever I have menu questions or am on the fence between options, our server takes my questions and preferences into consideration and provides perfect recommendations. I can't recommend L'Opossum enough!

Yelp
We went to l'opossum for my birthday. I made a reservation 2 months in advance just because prime dinner time is so hard to get at this place. I have heard so many good things about l'opposum & was really excited. As someone who lived in Paris for a long time, I really wanted to love this place. However, 1) this is not classical french fine dining, it's more casual on the modern side, but the price is pretty steep for casual dining, it is kind of confusing where it stands as a high-end or a trendy restaurant 2) the menu was not descriptive at all (They have a dish called texas nude beach or something like that), I think whoever wrote the menu wanted to be witty, but ended up just being confusing. 3) the appetizers are amazing, and the entree was fine. What was very strange is you cannot place an appetizer order without also placing your entree order, so we ended up getting drinks on an empty stomach because we couldn't decide what entree we want so we couldn't order apps 4) The waiter told us he has another table in 30 minutes coming in so if we want dessert we needed to decide (while we are still half way through our entree) otherwise there's no time, and that was a mood killer & we feel like we are being rushed to finish eating fast so they can turn around the table for the next group. I was really sad at the end. Overall, I don't think I can recommend L'Opposum, simply because you can get better food and services with the same price, or visit other french restaurants for a romantic dinner in the area. Really wish we loved it :// If you have plenty of cash to spare, this may be a good place for you.
