The first time I visited Loreto, I had a great experience, so I suggested it when a friend wanted to take me to dinner for my birthday. However, it seems that things have gone downhill, as my last dinner there was a complete train wreck from start to finish.
Let's begin. My companion and I checked in for our reservation and were taken to be seated. This turned out to be awkward as the waitress walked us around the entire restaurant looking very confused, seemingly unable to find us a table. She randomly sat us at a table for two (our reservation was for 3 people), told us to wait and left without any explanation. About 10 minutes later, she returned and took us to another table the right size.
Another waitress came to take our drink orders while we waited for the last person in our party to arrive. The drinks never came until much later when all three of us had already had time to catch up, read over the menu multiple times, and were ready to place our entire orders. Worse, the wrong drink came. My companion does not drink alcohol and ordered a mocktail, but we each took one sip and realized it was a cocktail. I understand accidents happen, but imagine how much more detrimental this mistake could have been were it given to someone recovering from alcoholism or with a religious restriction.
The next thing that happened was the most bizarre of all. As the appetizers were being placed on the table, the waitress came and gave us the bill. Um, what? Excuse me? We had not even taken a single bite of food yet and were being rushed to pay. I've never in my life seen such a thing. The bill was also wrong, so we had to ask her to go back and fix it.
While we were eating our entrees, the waitress came back for the bill again, and upon seeing that it was not paid yet (because we were in the MIDDLE of our meal) said "sorry take your time!" This was comical, as it's contradictory to tell someone to take their time whilst also giving them the bill egregiously early and coming to get it again mid-meal. When we were ready to pay, we found that the bill was still wrong, and the mocktail was charged as a cocktail. Sigh. The waitress apologized and said that drink was on her (thanks for the free soda, I guess).
My friend has worked in the service industry many years and asked to speak to the manager to provide feedback. The waitress told us there was no manager that night, but we could speak to the head chef. She also tried to chalk the poor service up to the fact that there was a show at the BAM that night and they had a full house. This does not make sense to me, as the first time I'd been to Loreto it was the same situation, but we still received excellent service. Also, the majority of the restaurant cleared out halfway through our meal, but the service never improved.
The head chef came out later and started by telling us that it was each of the server's first/second days, they're training new people in the kitchen as well, and he's been dealing with issues all night. This was not comforting knowing that the entire restaurant has been in chaos, and tells me that they do not have great standards when hiring. He admitted this was no excuse, apologized, and said he wished there was more he could do.
As we were leaving the restaurant, our waitress was at the hostess stand and shouted "wait, the chef is making you a dessert!" How did this fail to get mentioned until we were already halfway out the door? Bye folks. At this point, we were over it and said no thanks. I felt bad that I had suggested we eat there and subjected my friends to an awful experience.
TLDR; The food at Loreto is still good, but there seems to have been a huge dip in service. Would not recommend unless you want to be left utterly confused and embarrassed with your guests.
